I edited the first post. I'm fine if it's optional, just as long as I can get rid of it myself.
For those saying "swing the view around", that's not an option sometimes. It doesn't work in Blockade and a few others, because the clouds are everywhere. --- Space For Rent |

Why in the world does The Blockade mission need 3 of the damn things? I get 9 fps with all those clouds. I don't care if it becomes optional or removed, just stop hurting my FPS!

Edited by: Don Caldari on 17/01/2007 17:32:56 definatly signed oh and any chance we could also remove all of the wall pieces etc that are just eye candy because those definatly also cause heavy lag on missions at the very least make an overview option that will show only the buildings that actually have a chance of dropping loot in some missions where u need to take out one building, when u turn large colidable objects on in the overview,u get a list about a mile long with wallpieces etc
edit:we also need an overview option to only show wrecks that actually contain loot in the overview and it would be nice if it was posible to make a seperate window for gang info and drone info since if u have both gang and drone info open u can list about 20 objects in the overview wich get cluttered by wrecks in about 60 seconds

While we're at it how about creating a new overview category called "useless mission props you don't need to pay attention too" instead of making everything large collidable structures and what not.
Some of them add nice flavor but I get irked when I miss something due to the fact that you pretty much HAVE to keep large collidables turned off.

Maybe edit the thread title too to reflect the optional thingy, so not more of the unsympathetic egomaniacal 'I have a good comp and no problem so it must not be changed' guys are led astray... --------- ZOMG my sig was concordokkened! Link removed due to bad language on remote site. -wystler

I remember the clouds being exceptionally obnoxious in the Gist 8/10 plex. They are just abrasive to the eyes at times.

Nor Do I have problems with roids in missions. extra isk for me.
Ppl keep saying this. The asteroids in Downing the Slavers are OMber and do not cause lag. THe asteroids in Stop The Thief are a massive debris field of at least 200 objects, they cause a 4-5 second lag when warping in to me.
And to those who say it shouldnt cause lag or your system sucks or whatever, I play on a laptop sometimes, which is a naturally obvious problem. Even on my desktop (a 'standard' 1g ddr2 3ghz, 7800 gt) this spike occurs, sure it may be beacuse I'm running 2 monitors and watching/doing stuff on the other screens, but that shouldn't refute the idea of an option to switch things off...

I'd also like to take the opportunity to sign for direct3d or opengl support (whichever one is currently fubar) as it means my projo wont play eve through the HTPC, for some unknown reason...

Before I say this, I am purely assuming and using my own experiences and what I have read to base what I am about to write up off of.
I play this game on 3 different systems depending on availability in my home. Each varies in performance from 1.4ghz AMD TBird all the way up to 3.0ghz P4's and dual displays. All of the systems experience more or less identical lag or performance issues...regardless of system specs. The reason this game has lag or loss fps is because of the information being loaded. It is NOT, I repeat, NOT a graphically intensive game so any performance loss on your uber system is obviously not as a result of this. Especially if your uber system is able to run games like HalfLife2 in full gfx as that game is leaps and bounds ahead of EVE in the graphics department. If there is anything causing lag or fps it's the things developers have already been eluding to. And that's the database performance and data requests that have to do with missions/grids in systems. Think about it...loading 200 objects (for the asteroid field mentioned earlier off a SQL database no less) in a single grid ON WARP IN is obviously not a graphics related issue if it is only a spike initially and then stabilizes to a constant fps. That's most likely the grid loading for you on your client...so...all 200+ objects including NPC's, you, your teammates, and anything else related all loading in one shot basically. This then leads me to believe that we're dealing with an issue with database calls and loading objects from said database (duh right?). Well, this would be something CCP is not only aware of but, is doing what they can to alleviate. Also, consider this...were these gas clouds and other objects an issue before or after Kali? My assumption is that it was after that it became an issue.
But, then again...I could be way wrong.

Relax man. I posted that because the OP quotes that he's using a 7950, a card which is supposed to spec faster than mine. I agree with the last poster, but what he says brings up another point: if CCP removes all of the mission eye candy, whats left? If that were the case I might feel compelled to pop in Diablo II and revel in all it's glory.
Btw, I prefer to call it the power of school and ambition. Finding a job after all those years of hard work helps a little too (my system goes for cheap now anyway) :P

there are times where i sit and try to figure out how this game works technically. i play with 7-10 fps on a laptop but then there these missions where u see that the lag is created by objects in space (clouds and debris like in stop the thief level 4) and im wondering if the server is sending all this information, or if the lag is created client side.
i hope a that maybe a dev can comment on this and if this petition is even worth our trouble

OMG, so 100% /signed!!!
The different bright nebulae (this goes for some general starsystem backgrounds as well) are often so bright that you simply CAN'T see whether your modules are active or not, and sometimes they make it impossible to utilise the tactical overview to see where enemies are in relation to your self. Remove them ASAP (or make it possible to adjust the gamma, up to and including OFF). Besides, space is suppoosed to be dark and scary. All this bright WoW coloring should be left out.
For all the objects floating around in mission space, I've always thought that pretty retarded. Players MAY see them the first time they try a mission, but otherwise they're ignored. The only time they're NOT ignored is when you're warping into a mission, and the <insert multiple suitable swear words here> thing takes 15 seconds to load because of all the <insert more swear words> objects the mission designer thought 'necessary' in there.... Some of the items in there are pretty enough (like the 'Stop The Thief' 'roids), but why have 200 of them. Some of the composite structures are pieces of art, but since they consist of a gazillion small objects, each of which has to be loaded and rendered, it is annoying as hell, especially when they fill up your overview too.

You are both right and wrong. Yes there is a lag spike on warp in in some missions, and that is NOT due to clouds and stuff but due to all the things in the mission grid being loaded from the DB. (I guess here it would help if a wall was one object instead of 237... )
But that is not what my problem is, and I assume neither the OPs or that of most signers. That problem IS the clouds, and it IS a graphical issue and not a DB related one since it causes a significant drop in FPS constantly while you are in the mission area. And it has been here ever since I play EVE, not just since Kali (I started a thread or two about that in the suggestions forum at times but they drifted away into nothingness). It is also not an object number issue since I did not have such problems in some of the old non-deadspace missions which also had huge amounts of objects but not nearly the FPS drop as a cloud-infested deadspace. Paired with the issue of clouds/smoke being FPS killers in older 3D games as well, it is pretty obvious. Just like an option to turn them off seems obvious to me... --------- ZOMG my sig was concordokkened! Link removed due to bad language on remote site. -wystler

I'm gonna sign because I definately agree that there should be an option to disable fps killing graphics. But, we're all entitled to an opinion. My opinion is, I enjoy the clouds even though my $500 super computer does take a hit in frames because of them.
Take it easy Leandro. No need to take out your frustrations here...

If it is something that can be turned on and off I am for it, but there needs to be an option. I have my laptop that eats everything that EVE has to offer with no issues. Granted it is 2 Gigs of DDR ram, a duo core Pentium Proc. And a pair of SLI cards. Now on the other hand heading to some popular Ice mining spots causing incredible lag while everything loads

So why does that automatically preclude getting an option? Because you get 50 frames doesn't mean everyone else does. I'm lucky to break 18 in a safespot on one of my computers.
Definately signed, I simply cannot run L4s on one of my comps because there is too much stuff there. I'd get BBQed before I even saw what was shooting me. Anything to decrease that load is good. ---------------- 1337 = I III III VII Cookie = Confectionary Discus
