I was blissfully unaware of the ammo requirements until I found mid-mission that I'd ran out of charges. In a Velator. At the same time I didn't realise I could warp out of an encounter by normal means. D'oh! *pop*

After that, I just sat in the station and browsed the market for a very long time, until I'd formed a picture in my head of how things fit together and how the game worked.
Then I got myself a Merlin. I remember thinking how tough it was. I put a tech 2 AB on it, along with blasters and rocket launchers. ***

Edited by: Andrue on 09/02/2007 20:06:42 On my second day I proudly announced to NPC corp chat that I'd grabbed ore out of some cans just floating in the belt. Someone responded with 'yeah, they're mine'. Luckily this was back in Feb '04 when there was nothing they could do about it but it was the only time I ever stole ore.
A couple of days later someone paid me 400k when I arrived in belt. Dunno why. I just warped to the belt and got 400k in my wallet. At the time I thought I was rich.

making incessant run from belt to station in a navitas because i so wanted to buy a tristan. Got the tristan , ventured in placid (no idea it was choke full of pirate) and taking out a serp cruiser at a gate :) then going for a dual BC spawn.......nuff said.
Space was huge, i just couldnt make head or tails of the map, didnt understand that Insta bookmark thing people were talking about.
Day i bought my first thorax, god this ship is so freaking huge....just to be met by a megathron outside the station 'frak that ship is huge'....

Being terrified of flying into stations, planets and gates because I thought I'd crash and explode.
Planning to head towards Guristas space in my condor (I didn't know that 0.0 even existed at the time) with the plan of single handedly toppling them all. I was actually half-way to 0.0 when I was saved by my first corp, who recruited me on the spot after hearing what I was planning on doing. (on a side note, space felt so much bigger and unique back then - I can remember more about the systems I was in during my first month than I can in the entire time I've spent in eve since, even that stupid system I was recruited in that I only ever entered once (to my knowledge)).
Quitting my first corp because they were joining an alliance that had a policy whereby if you popped a roid mining in 0.0 they'd pod you (superstition to do with roid respawning I believe) - I wasn't having anything to do with anyone who would POD another player! That's griefing! :S
Thinking that all 0.0 was in the east, because that's the direction you had to head in to reach my first alliance's territory.
Thinking I was invincible because my Caracal I took on my first roam into 0.0 had about 2.5k shields. Despite not having any instas, MWDs, ABs, WCS' or a clue, I actually managed to survive for about half a week (although that had more to do with being lucky and not running foul of any hostiles than my godly 2.5k shields). ___

5. Blackbirds are the ultimate ships. They look like a prehistoric Millenium Falcon and can fit Cruise Missle launcher's.
6. Kestrels can fit cruise missle launchers aswell ...
7. 2 Kestrels own a Blackbird when fitted with cruise missle launchers
8. OMG i will never recover from this loss of my CM fitted Blackbird
9. ECM / ECCCM ??? Useless junk .. i have no place for that on my new Blackbird .. because i need the slots for my 3 Shield boosters ( what do you mean i need to activate it )

Thinking that shield-tanking Amarr ships made sense Thinking that Beams > Pulses Thinking that 1M ISK was a lot of money Being devastated after losing my first dessy to a war target in empire Putting at least 2 stabs on everything Thinking that drones were ghey because I thought you had to select each one individually to assigne them targets Using shield + armor + hull reppers on the same ship Thinking that putting 2 heat sinks was dumb because of the stacking penalties Thinking that DCUs were a useless mod
Hmm... lots of fitting-related stuff
Anyways, IBTL

First time I saw my Brother playing eve I thought a station was attacking his Velator.
On my first night avoiding anything that moved because I didn't I was protected in 1.0 space.
Also on my first night, being affraid to leave the starter system to complete a newbie mission because my Velator might get blown up.
Eventualy plucking up the courage to go to the next door system and complete the newbie mission, and getting lost doing so, so I opened my map and chose a system with a cool name to go live in.
Thinking 2 battleships on a gate in low-sec were not a threat because they were 100km away...
ahh good times -----

Ahhh what an excellent thread!!
Back in May 2003...[on my original character not this one] Born in Cistuvaert, Verge Vendor, took me 5 days to figure out how to leave the system and join my m8 down in Heimater. No autopilot in those days, it was a long trip.
Ninja mining 'all' the high end roids in 0.5 > 0.1 in my Probe frigate, dodging the rats, eyes glued on local and anyone dodgy looking, scraping together the odd refine of something nice. Then they nerfed the roids to hell I quit for 6 months. When i came back i mined Omber for 3 months straight and, not satisfied with the pathetic cargo capacity of my hauler, i used to painstakingly position giant secure containers in the belts, precisely the correct distance from the roids so that i could sit there in my thorax 5km from the roids and transfer to these cans. The precise positioning took nearly as long as the mining but of course i justified it to myself by saying that no bugger ore thief would steal my omber. Then a m8 told me that if you jettisoned your cargo hold you could transfer 27,500m3 of ore into it instead of 6x3900m3 per can. I wasn't paticularly pleased with this revelation as i should have been...i was bloody furious at all the wasted hours i had spent with those damn giant cans!
There was much gnashing of teeth!

2 thoughts really..
Firstly I insisted on naming my ships after me ex-girlfriends thinking I'd only ever have 3 max. I've still got a shuttle called 'Wiggy'
Secondly 'wtf did I leave my ship??' and going to every station in a rough effort to find my lost bantam. I never did find it until I found the 'assets' button. __ I really don't need BoB propaganda here any more. Let's embrace yiffy. |

got my first mission from security division, eliminate drones in belts. and I was...... actually FLYING to the 'belt'. I thought the belt is the 'belt looking stars' in the space background, and got full speed flying to it. yes, it took me forever to that belt and failed up the mission.
i was so happy that our corp had a POS, and ran into it, wondering, ok, how can i use it? when and how can i use what made by whom at where? O_o

lol yeah i made that mistake on my first character as well, didn't on (this) my second character and i still find myself amazed that thsi character now has more SPs.
although the charisma based skills does help me get more cash for rewards when i actually bother to do missions, which is rare.

Edited by: Acinonyx Jubatus on 15/02/2007 04:33:09 Haha, memories...
Some of the things I remember thinking.
0.0 is a big dark scary place overrun by and evil force called bob(hey, all I ever saw anywhere was "bob this. bob that" never knowing what "bob" was until atleast a month or two later) and evil pirates and scary people... and that I'd never ever ever be able to nor ever want to venture into it.
Then there's the time I realized "omg I don't NEED to keep a mining laser on my ship when I use it to shoot rats" 1 crappy AC and basic miner on a vigil = my first "combat ship"... oh boy.
when I thought I needed long and short range turrets on my ship at all times to be effective... lead to poor thrasher performance.
when I thought my thrasher was tough enough to take on dual angel cruiser spawns by itself in .3
:/ I lost a lot of thrashers, and destroyers in general for that matter, that way.
someone reminded me, put a lot of charisma into my attributes cause I thought it'd give me better market deals and communication options(wtf was I thinking)
also ignored the learning skills for several months cause I though they took too long...big mistake.
Fearful of leaving my starter station that I'd get lost and never find my way home. Making 1 jump a large voyage for me. Hey, I thought I'd get lost.

Oh so many.
1. While installing the game after it was described to me as being like Elite or X2 but online, I blew the dust off my Joystick, only to discovver that you don't "pilot" your ship in the traditional sense.
2. As previously mentioned fitting long and short range guns to my ships, so I was effective at all ranges,
3. Taking my first Scythe in to my first lvl 2 (I still have the Scythe, but I **** myself when I warped in!)
4. Finding systems were unreachable (didn't realise you can change the auto pilot settings)
5. Wtf are drones for then. I want more guns on my ship. (Also not realising that frigates can have drone bays)
6. A friend who also plays as Minmatar advised me to shield tank my ships.
7. Fitting an afterburner to ALL my ships.
Probably more to follow if / when I remember

At the start of the tutorial, the tutorial drone (aura? aurora?) said I should not attack her. I spent hours looking for that drone to shoot it ...
OHH, and once I tougth I was finaly over with the tutorial-bot for good. I have not heard her voice in days. I was happily traveling near 5-n2ey (or something similar), found some lotkas at the gate, waved at them "0/ hellow lotkas"...boom and there it was: training-bot - "You clumsy pilot! You have been podded!". The worst, she was laughing at me! |

Here's several for ya...
First day I got lost after one jump, couldn't remember the name of the system I started at, lost my gear. Got along with it.
I fitted lasers on my Rifter and kept on using lasers until my Rupture era. I then decided that Minmatar sucks (big mistake, truthfully) and went Gallente.
I was running missions but I had never heard of anything damage-reducing. Needless to say I couldn't get anything done without the help of my corpies. I learned about hardeners when I was already in 0.0 ....
Where, on one of my first days, we were about to take over FAT-6P. We assembled in 9CG6-H at a POS, and I thought we were at the gates. Found it weird to see all those turrets in one row, backed up by hardeners and EW stuff :)

"AFK" Mining with a tristan, making 10 trips back to the station and cashing out about 100k and feeling like I'd solved the game.
And why did I have 14 missions with 14 different agents scattered over half the galaxy? And some of them required me going into .5 space!! "HELL NO, I'll decline that mission, I'll get killed by pirates and have to start over."
"Oh cool, this person wants to gang with me to help me with this ***** of a Level 2 mission in this .4 system, that's awesome."
--The thing is, I'm still doing dumb crap, I just won't know it for another year.

I remember never leaving station without a shield booster, an armor repper, and a hull repper.
On the upside, it motivated me to max every capcitor skill I could get my hands on.
Never a threat, but always a thorn in the side. |

Edited by: Gobblock on 15/02/2007 16:35:06 On my FIRST day, some other noob in a hauler invited me to go mine with him.
Then when he logged off he left abou 3km3 of pyroxerxes in his can. so i spent like 3 hours hauling it back to station before warp to zero (or instas) a few hundred m3 at a time
Then i refined the ore without skills, and sold the minerals in station, for what i later learned was a very bad price
I thought i was rich, and then i looked at the market and saw about 5-6 more digits for alot of ships
so for a few months i thought mining in high sec was where the BIG isk was, so i bought a bantom and mined my heart out in bantom/osprey for a few weeks until i realized i wasnt making jack

- Jumping back to my station in my brand new ibis to validate my mission, the warp end me up near a Raven, I didnt understand why I couldnt dock in the "station"... "Oh wait its a ship ! omfg its huge ! I wonder how many players actually pilot that thing ?!"
- Few months later, first trip in 0.0 exploring belts with my leet Vigil fitted with a mwd, then pop a 750k Megathron with 2 frigs 40km away from me... I got a heart attack when I saw the frigs approaching me at 2000m/s thinking wisely that they had to be scamblers, so I activate my Mwd and start orbiting the mega thinking nothing could happen to me at 3000 m/s. then I see big balls of light approching me with high speed and decide to warp out (big mistake, I think RmR was released few weeks before) I still had the signature radius of a Titan but the speed of a freighter when those cruise missile hit me right before warping. 10% structure was a bit scary travelling back to home, specially through Y9G-KS where an inty finished the job and ransomed me for 1337 isk to let my pod live (pilot name was lolerskate or something like that, funny guy :p )

Some 2 weeks before RMR
I remember when I opened my first loot can in the training complex. It contained a Fleeting Warp Scrambler and I though YESS!! With this ultra rare thing I'm gonna be the best pirate ever
It also contained a Guristas ship log which mentioned a hidden supply depot in a system 10 jumps away. I though I've hit the jackpot and traveled there immediately. The description said something like "behind planet III" so naturally I warped to planet III. No sign of the hidden treasure. Then I set course next to the moon and left for 10 minutes, I was unhappy that I still haven't found it when I got back. Then I realized that it's BEHIND the planet, so I had to warp in from the opposite direction! After that plan failed too I asked my corpmates and then I was the laughing stock for half an hour...
My friend who gave me the trial key said that he's doing a mission. I thought missions must be good so I asked if I can come. He formed a gang and initiated a gang warp, I was shocked that somehow he gained control of my ship. Then we started the mission he went in first to get aggro. I think he was in a cruiser. He told me to just start shooting so I unleashed the full power of the civilian gatling railgun on my Ibis. When we finished the mission he looked at my ship and said OMG you're in an Ibis?! I felt offended that he mocked my uber ship
When he urged me non-stop to buy a "real ship" and also provided me with 500k ISK I've bought a Heron because it looked cool

I remember being very afraid of stacking penalties because it didn't say what the penalty was. I thought something bad would happen like the mods wouldn't work at all or you would get fined.

Having a picture in my head of a huge fleet battle, with weapons going off, missiles flying about, huge noise and atmosphere being achievable, and the peak of the game for me.
Now I play with all effects and often sound off when PvPing :/
That and thinking joining Xetic alliance was a good idea.

I'm still relatively new as far as actual ingame time, but when I started my subscription I can't tell you how many characters I recycled trying to get the individual skill(x) levels down to train faster. You know, the number that tells you how fast or slow it will train? I thought that number was DIRECTLY related to the attributes and character type I chose on setup. So like I would spend time nudging attributes in the character setup trying to find the perfect industrial, or miner, or combat pilot only to find on login the friggin skills were the same lvl as before!? Then of course, I would start all over again because obviously I made some mistake.
After days going back and forth like this, I figured I needed to get some help. It took like an hour argueing with older FNA players for me to finally get it. "uh... so you're telling me skill ranks are the same across the board? no matter what attributes you have!?" I still refused to believe them in that surely they must have misunderstood my questions. dag'nabbit! my signature never wo |

Thinking my friends were uber because one of them flew a ferox and another clew a caracal.
Thinking another friend was the richest guy alive because he could afford to give me 5mill, and could buy a megathron.
Sensor boosting a caracal to do lvl 1s because the lock time was too long :D

Edited by: Par''Gellen on 16/02/2007 06:48:06 Just remembered some more.
Accidentally stole someone's ore because I thought that the can that was floating near the roid I was mining was the result of the mining I was doing and I was supposed to collect the ore from it. He was cool about it though and said he'd done the same thing the day before
The first time I saw a bestower (June 2003 while mining in my noob ship) I couldn't believe how huge it was and thought it had to be indestructible.
Saved isk for WEEKS to buy an Omen and after I picked it up I thought I was an unstoppable mining juggernaut.
