Edited by: Xelios on 19/02/2007 04:05:59 Can't believe I forgot to mention Serial Experiments Lain. Not very action-oriented but it's got a very interesting story to tell.
A little anime sampler, I always like to watch a bit before buying the whole thing. All of them are parts of the first episode/beginning so it doesn't spoil anything:
Ergo Proxy Appleseed Serial Experiments Lain Ghost in the Shell (2nd GIG) GITS: Solid State Society (love the opening bit to this one) Elfen Lied... well I was going to link to this one but it's seriously messed up and I wouldn't be surprised if it got hit with the mod stick.
btw, what's with most anime's walking you through the lyrics to the opening? As in Elfen Lied for example.

If you want something just in-farking-sane, try Excel Saga.
Akira is a classic of course, as is Ninja Scroll. Trigun is a fun western/sci-fi hybrid. Everything I've seen by Leiji Matsumotodo far has been worth it (Galaxy Express 999, Martel Legend, Harlock Saga, my Youth in Arcadia, etc) Slayers is a fun anime series...if oriented more towards a younger audience.(I prefer the 3 series to the OVAs..but it's all decent)
A winning strategy! Are we going for a NBSI post policy, now? Because I seriously though CCP were better than that. |

Ah, hell, anything by Studio Ghibli, I'm not up to date on their stuff as I'm on work placement away from my precious Sci-Fi/Anime college society.
Perfect Blue - Actually a live action film does as anime due to production problems, well worth a watch
Edit: And Read or Die. Wacky stuff that. -

Jin Roh (must see imo)
Yuki Kaze (3 parts) (weird story but technically excellent)
Wonderful Days (technically excellent and one of the best soundstracks for an anime)
Robotech (Series) (although a lot of people seem prefer the originals - like Macross)

I'll second most of these suggestions, but I'd like to put my vote in for Great Teacher Onizuka. Damn funny, and once you've watched the anime then find the live action series and watch that too, it's brilliant, in a wtf this is bad kinda way.

Also, viewer discretion is advised.
Seriously, we actually warned people before showing this. It ****s with your head. For an anime. -

I don't know much about anime at all, but the peeps above who mentioned "Perfect Blue" are right on the ball.
Great film.
It kinda feels weird, though, when they talk about the intenet being "new". Amazing how fast things can get dated. _______

Edited by: Forando on 19/02/2007 12:07:38 Perhaps someone in this thread can help me out:
About 2 years ago I watched this weird little series about a girl who did a lot of bed-exercise, she had this little hamster in her apartment that ate lots of cheese - Now I sound like a complete retard, eh? - I've misplaced the title of that series as I kinda want to watch it again, as it was quite a laugh. Anyone know what the shining cow I'm talking about?
Enjoy, and fly safe..

Correction: Japanese people do.
Karaoke is huge all across Asia, far more than any wapanese could imagine. Go to China, Taiwan, Korea, Japan; you will find karaoke machines and people singing to them. Its one of those things that never really caught on here.

You must watch Fooly Cooly (aka Furi Kuri, FLCL, etc).
Also good is Elfen Lied, Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO), Gungrave, Trigun, and Hellsing (original or OVA, original is silly but has set the standard for badassery in anime). ___________

A little part of me died tonight.
GITS SAC.....on cartoon network....dubbed. Someone kill me
Anyone know how long this has been going on for?
As for anime suggestions anything that has less than 2 scenes per episode that take place at a school is ok with me. Too many series feature 15-20 year old characters that go to some form of Japanese highschool/college and are always having realtionship troubles. It gets to the point where after a single episode you can predict the entire series character development simply because you have seen thoes cookie cutter characters sooooooo many times before. Best bet is to watch a few episodes of a series and judge for yourself, just because it's anime dosen't mean that its good. _______________________________ Idea stolen from DS:

Its on Adult Swim, its not bad at all.
Their late-night dubs include Cowboy Bebop and the like; they're usually quite well done in comparison to most others . Then again that's not saying much.
Generally companies have a tendency to make one really, really dumb mistake while dubbing; that is, instead of having the voice actors act the characters the best they can, they try to mimic the original voices. Since Americans are not Japanese, and American voice actors are generally of lower quality due to the smaller size of the industry here, they fail miserably.
They can't seem to figure out that the best way to voice act is to just do it naturally.
This is the primary reason why the Azumanga Daioh dub is atrocious. The characters should be extremely easy to voice, but the American actors try to mimic the original Japanese voices. It is not possible to realize how bad an idea this was without hearing the dub

Another one I think that should be emphasized is Voices of a Distant Star. Its a short, 24-minute anime (one episode!!!) made my a single talented artist on his Mac in 7 months with his wife doing the female voice acting. It was a huge hit in Japan and personally I think its one of the best I've ever seen.
The animation is an incredible combination of 2D and 3D graphics, and the story is absolutely great. The idea is basically that of a long distance relationship; at first glance it might seem like You've Got Mail, but its not a comedy; its a tragedy about lovers moving further and further away from each other, as they are seperated by miles, then millions of miles, then light years.
And of course messages take longer and longer to move between them... and the age gap rises due to the Twin paradox.

Blood: The Last Vampire - is one of the best Japanese animations i have seen since i started to study the genre almost 5 years ago for my qualifications...
...its directed by Hiroyuki Kitakubo - it uses some CGI production and the artistic talents of Studio IG...sadly it isn't very long though
