The First Annual Freedom Fighter Of the Year Award Presented by: Silence iKillYouu Sponsored by: Tech4 News
Struggle, agony and war have filled this year. This year we have seen our brothers and sisters fall in combat. We have seen our children taken in to slavery. We have seen our home systems transformed in to battle grounds and killing fields.
However, this is not all the year has held for the Minmatar Republic. We have seen our Elder's proud as we rise to fight each and every day. We have seen victory as we fight to free our people from their chains of bondage. We have seen glory as sons and daughter of the Minmatar Republic takes arms an battle on the front lines.
At the end of this difficult year we must pause a moment and give thanks. We give thanks to the Elder's. We give thanks to our tribes. We give thanks to those that have made it their single personal cause to take up the banner of the Minmatar Republic and fight for her. We give thanks to those that selflessly peruse freedom at all costs. The Freedom Fighter of the Year Award celebrates these individuals.
This year let us all come together to recognize those who made great strides in the freedom fight. Members of the Minmatar Republic are welcome to nominate Capsuleers that have been influential. Once the nominations are collected, all are invited to vote for who should receive the title of Freedom Fighter of the Year.
Along with the title, prizes will be awarded. The capsuleer with the most votes will be titled "Freedom Fighter of the Year" and receive a Faction Pirate Battleship of their choice. The Capsuleer with the second most votes will be titled "The Republic's Victor" and receive a Faction Navy Battleship of their choice. The 3rd highest voted Capsuleer will be titled "The People's Warrior" and receive a Stabber Fleet Issue.
Nomination Phase: Gùï Nominations will be open from the tie of this post until YC 113.12.21 23.59:59 Gùï Any member of the Minmatar Republic can be nominated. Gùï Nominations MUST include the name of the nominee and WHY they are nominated. Gùï Nominations not fitting the above criteria will be discarded. Gùï All nominees with qualified nominations will be placed on to a ballot.
Ballot: Gùï The ballot will be open from YC 113.12.22 01:00:00 until YC 113.12.31 23:59:59 Gùï The ballot will be hosted [site to be determined]. Gùï Voting will be open to all and two votes can be made. Gùï The Ballot will closed and totaled and the winners will be announced YC 114.01.01 Gùï Winners will be posted to this thread and the Tech4 News website. Gùï Prizes will be sent to the winners via contract

It's somewhat ironic that Kazzzi's nomination for Amarrian Capsuleer of Year was accepted but your rules exclude him from this contest.

As a loyal Amarrian and a member of the Tech4 News team, I personally cannot condone Tech4's support for this award. Whilst it saddens me that conflicts are ongoing, glorifying the violence is not something that should be encouraged by either side and certainly not advertised by the journalistic media.
I understand that a junior member of the Tech4 news team has been involved in the arrangements for this event and perhaps she did not represent Tech4's interests appropriately. Therefore I strongly suggest to the event organisers that this reward be approached in a less inflammatory manner or I will be forced to recommend to the Tech4 management that all support for this award ceremony be withdrawn.
I am not unsympathetic to the issues here, but lauding murderers is not an appropriate way to bring them to the attention of the general public. I am strongly of the opinion that Tech4 News should have no part in proceedings as they stand.

I agree with your points completely. In that regard, I vote for Arbane. As he has not killed any of my Amarr brothers; he fights for the values of the Minmatar without causing bloodshed - a very noble fight indeed.
In fact, one of his only recorded losses was a Tech 3 Loki class cruiser, and if I recall correctly he gave his own ship to allow the rest of his fleet to disperse safely into the shadows. |

I am pleased to report that the following statement has been released by the sponsors of this event:
Quote:In order to avoid accusations of political bias, a statement has been issued to the event organisers detailing that Tech4 News will have no choice but to withdraw sponsorship unless a less divisive and inflammatory tone can be taken. It is the hope of the board that the focus be diverted from the violent acts of war and be centred on awards for humanitarian efforts, emancipation and repatriation of the enslaved and their integration back into Minmatar culture.
It is hoped that a resolution can be found that suits all.

In addition to being an amazing and very capable pilot she is also very wise and knows that there is a need for peace and words. She recognizes that all peoples have in common these things: family and duty. She has become the former to me. And this is what sets her apart.

My fight has always been with the Amarr Empire, not the races from which it's composed. Whatever your specific motivations, you made a personal moral decision to change sides, likely at personal cost to yourself, with no particular reward other than the knowledge that you were doing the right thing. You now fight against your former allies and companions, who will most likely fight with additional fervor to see you fail and the vision you now support destroyed.
I'm not saying I trust you just yet, but I certainly have a whole lot of respect for you. Most certainly I can't fault your choice in corporations to throw your lot in with - or CEOs to serve under, although I imagine my nomination makes my opinion on that matter fairly clear already. Interesting that they openly brag about such underhanded tactics, normally braggarts tend to chestbeat from a higher pedestal. Of course all it takes is someone working within the Amarr Militia to simply turn up and shoot said T3 out of the sky.
Anyway my nomination would be for Captain Starfire for her work in forming Teraa Matar, and being a great example of grace and dignity in an environment that breeds people with less than acceptable civil qualities.
However if there's a potential lifetime achievement award, I'd like to nominate Dr. Evanda Char. Not just for her work this last twelve months, but for several years, dedicating herself to research and matters purely in the interests of both the Republic and for humanity as a whole. |

In the beginning we settled our differences with a frig battle witch showed just how competent as a pilot Ava Starfire is. When I started flying for the 24th Imperial Crusade, I respected her as a fearsome rival. She was a force not to be underestimated. Now that I no longer fly under the Amarr Banner she was just as quick as me to make a no fire pact between our corporations showing that she has respect for true warriors as well. For this and her unquestionable devotion to the protection of her race. She has my nomination and what will be an easy vote when the time comes.

Please keep voting to current Minmatar militia pilots. (We all know who Arbane is and he wont be counted.)
1st Prize Faction pirate Battleship of your choice. 2nd Prize Navy Battleship of your choice. Please give reasons :)
The rules are clear. He qualifies the criteria you set out for the contest. Are you saying you are disqualifying him? Because according to my count he is in a comfortable lead as far as votes.

Just so you know, Ava Starfire recently defected from Electus Matari , too the militia to help us in the front line. Maybe looking at her statistics in other channels will high light this talented pilot. I also believe she is quite active in the actions of system control, along with Sasawong and co. Quite simple. The award was open for all Minmatar out there, with people being able to nominate who they deem worthy, as per vox populi. After a certain individual has gotten a certain number of nominations, the organizer suddenly decided they'd be excluded from the ballot for no real reason given. From what I've seen I can only suppose the the problem why mr. Arbane is seen as less-then-equal than his peers is because he is advocating a peaceful solution to the conflict at hand. I'm sure it would be quite a thorn in a number of people's sides if the person who wins this isn't a bloodthirsty murderer to fully represent the true facade of the Tribal Liberation Force. Ergo, it was and stays a farce. But go on, I'm sure you can make it even more entertaining by the time the nominations close. .domination sentinel .stillwater |

We all know nominations are near pointless as long as a short list and then a follow up internal only voting process exists.
Anyone can be nominated with a daft enough reason spun, then you just quietly handpick the select few you'd like.

I thought better of you, Mr. Blake.
It's quite amusing that the "joke nominations" the Minmatar brought forth were people such as Kazzzi, who at least used to work for the Amarr and has been extremely active (and amusing) on these fine forums, as well as Vaari, where not even Amarr loyalists know whether he's a troll or serious, while the best the Amarr can come up with as a "joke nomination" is ... a booster merc.

Please take into account that Ava almost always flies solo. On top of that, she only flies minmatar ships, and of them, usually only assault frigates or tech 1 frigates. When you remember this, her record becomes more impressive. She also often fights alone against greater numbers, for example here where she defeated both a succubus and a firetail at the same time (neither the stiletto nor the cynabal played any role in that fight).
She also plays a more peaceful role, and has gone to great pains to try and understand the Amarrian people, rather than just hating them blindly like so many of us do.

I'm, honestly, maddeningly jealous of Ava's talent. I am unexceptional in every way I can imagine, I was only elected to become a capsuleer by a pressing need for Pator Tech School to vitalize the program and my better-than-average grades. I originally studied to become a sensors analyst and even that is something I lack in applying.
My ineptitude is clearly systematic; even with hundreds of millions of ISK worth of expert knowledge forcibly inserted into my brain, I still routinely fail to make good decisions when hurried and my response time is very poor when compared to that of other capsuleers. I'm a very expensive ******* and it'll take me decades of practice to halfway do what Ava does naturally.
It took me a lot of mistakes to get to where I am now, but no one has ever been more supportive of me than my peers in Teraa Matar. Ava attracts a good crowd and the example she sets is endearing, if not overwhelming. I'm frightened to meet a better candidate for this award. EVE Online IdeaTorrent |

They apparently just didn't believe that Kazzzi has the same level of notoriety that you did, they also didn't offer much of an alternative so I wouldn't take their complaints seriously. Arbane was nominated to discredit the contest and subsequently struck down by, you know, the people holding the contest.

Why?
For publicly promoting the cause of Abolitionism within the Amarr Empire, with a quality of writing (although not typing) beyond the skill of most Intergal writers abillities.
That, and it's far easier to be against Slavery as a Matari Solider. Far less easy as an Amarrian Lord.
Beyond that, certain memebrs of a certain Matari Alliance may recall how many slaves I have personally gifted them in the cause of Abolition, Freedom and Liberty.
Sadly, most of those are planet bound these days and not around to say boo (not that they would admit to receipt of slaves from one such as me, no matter the rightiousness of teh cause), but such is life. |

As far as Ava Starfire, after meeting her on the field of battle more than once I would confidantly say she is among the best the Matar have. she will fight alone or with a gang and does not have the 'hide behind the school of fish' mentality most faction warfare pilots (of all races) have. I would like to second the nomination for Annah Kitheran; not just out of corp loyalty but because I truly believe that her dedication to the cause is impressive and worthy of recognition. All of us who have fought in this war for a lengthy period of time know the balance of power in the warzone is fickle, and neither side maintains the upper hand for more than a few months at a time. Annah has lead from the front, run fleets, devised strategy, and maintained morale in the bad times as well as in the good ones, and the importance of that is not to be underestimated.
Secondly I would like to put in a nomination for David Devant, until recently CEO of CTRL-Q. Planetside duties have recently forced him to step down from that position and hand over his responsibilities to his (most capable) director team, but he has been a stalwart presence in the warzone and deserving of recognition. |

As for Wolfsbrigade. Judge them kindly, they have been unable to effectively do anything useful on their own for some time so splitting hairs must seem a worthwhile diversion for them.

If you weren't simply a bunch of Caldari mercenaries who abandoned their homefront to the Federation, with no history to the Amarr/Matari war, you'd probably know that answer. |

Typically people do things like this to throw themselves a party. It's very hard to be perfectly altruistic and there's a number of factors to keep in mind here:
- Silence can not allow someone who isn't already popular to win, regardless of their dedication to the Republic.
- The sheer cost of the prize may demand some personal trust that it will go to good use.
- Silence will inevitably direct the success of this event into himself, he must maintain some level of control like rejecting Arbane (for obvious reasons) and he would benefit from manipulating the final result, emotionally. That's not to say he has or will, it's just a matter of fact.
- This is a contest of vanity, required by the fact that this recognition takes place after other events. The motive would be completely different if the contest was started before the year took place with the conditions for winning outlined then. It's hard to be compassionate without being spontaneous, though, and I don't feel that this being held ex post facto makes it any less genuine.
- This being a contest of vanity, mostly present qualities will be judged.
Regardless, Silence hasn't shown me any sign that he's been corrupted by the whole being human thing, but there is a lot riding on this for the integrity of all of us. I want Ava to win but I'm comfortable with any of the candidates winning. EVE Online IdeaTorrent |

That's pretty sad, Ava. I am sorry you have to deal with such.
Public, anonymous voting is easily abused. That both means that it is abusable, but also that it's easy to accuse others of abuse. That sadly does not help anyone, and as is obvious from the above, will even harm those who this is supposed to help.
I hope that the initiators of this contest will take it as an opportunity to improve the contest's rules, and not as a reason to abandon the idea. I think it has quite a bit of merit. |

I've been keeping an eye on this for a little while now, as it would have been rude to not be able to wish anyone I know a prompt congratulations if they had won. However I never actually "cast a vote" as I have reservations about the very notion of a purely democratic system, but that is neither here nor there.
What is here however is that it seems somehow appropriate or acceptable to harass and pester people in the process of this voting. Now, I admit I am by no means on expert in this sort of thing...but to use an example, aren't there laws and regulations in the Federation prohibiting the harassment of people with the intent to change votes? Seems to me if you're going to invite everyone to have a say, you might as well make an effort to at least stipulate that others shouldn't resort to what amounts to tampering or voter fraud.
Seeing as the person I would cast my vote for has withdrawn, I believe the appropriate thing for me to do is to officially abstain....or is it "spoil" my ballot? |

Interesting to see this Matari "award" plagued by a flawed voting system full of proxy voters, harassment of nominees, and general chaos.
Very fitting.
I'll contrast that with PIE's extremely orderly nominating process and awards for the last several years.
The "Freedom Fighter of the Year Award" shows that as with most things, Amarrians did it first, and better.

You either set a very poor or a very good example of your people, either way you do nothing to convince me that there is anything better about the Amarr at all.

Which is not so surprising for a "first time", though. Roughly that, yes.
The organizers took a few bold steps. They went for transparency and openness from the beginning: They wanted to be inclusive. On a medium like IGS, that always invites the trolls and kids to try and mess with things.
For example, the initial "scandal" was about openly admitting that an obvious and well-known Amarrian spy in the TLF is not going to get the prize for "freedom fighter of the year". That's expected, and no one would assume otherwise. All those proposals were, were an attempt to troll this prize with "but your original rules said I could do this, trololololo". The main "undoing" of the organizers here was being open about it: First, open about the admission phase, and second, open about the exclusion. The only reason this ever got to a point of "scandal" was a few disgruntled Amarrians playing schoolyard kids.
The second "scandal" was a bit more problematic. The cause was a technical problem: Public, anonymous voting is not secure. A bit of foresight and knowledge about the childish nature of a lot of pilots could have told them that it will be abused, one way or the other. This could have been avoided, and probably should be for future prizes. (If the organizers are interested, I'd be willing to discuss the technical side of a reliable one-vote-per-TLF-pilot system.)
To avoid these problems, it would have been easy to simply copy the PIE prize. They are not open about the selection phase at all (which is their perfect right - it's their prize), so both of the "scandals" in this prize would have been avoided. It was not a direct copy, and the implementation of the changes proved to be troublesome.
The more interesting aspect here are the peanut gallery Amarrians who try to use this as some kind of exercise in reliving their schoolyard times. It must be pretty embarrassing for the Empire (and Kingdom) to be "represented" by such people. |

Id just like to echo waht Mr. Sadik has already said, and make some suggestions for future contests, even if they may fall of deaf ears.
I would suggest that the nomination phase be coucil-based and not public. Perhaps get the donors together and select nominees. That way you can somewhat control who get the prizes and not get butthurt when someone not in the cool club gets in there. Public voting get everyone involved and is good overall in my opinion, but there has to be a 1 vote limit, perhaps a registration could be required.
My candidate has withdrawn so I no longer have a dog in the fight, good luck to those still involved. |
