Ebay has already made policy no sale of virtual property.
so they can try to bring it back to e-bay...and get banned there too :)

Also, why not just skip the middleman part and make it that you can buy ISK for a set fee? Magic Online does this - they have $1 certificates that are effectively used like cash to buy and sell cards online. As it is now, I would have to buy a card, find a buyer, do the transaction, and hope it's not from an enemy or macro-miner. I'd so much rather just pay a one-time $10 or $20 charge and get some isk that way.
If it was me, I'd do away with the timecards completely and just make it so that you charge us extra on our account. Simple to track as well, since you would need a credit card to play the game. Yes, I know you would lose some few players, but given how huge EVE has become in the last year alone, I doubt it it would hurt sales that much.
major difference between your proposal and current implementation.
Current method _creates_ no new ISK. It only relocates existing ISK in the system to changing ownership.
Your proposal out and out creates ISK from nothing with no player time and effort associated with its creation.
It'd be like when desperate nations print more money without having more resources to value it against (pre-WWII Germany, anyone? )
Just a counter point. The current mechanism allows players to be the controls both in isk acquisition for money rate AND in ISK creation.

Personally, I don't like the part about a code I purchase automatically being applied to my account. I'd like the option to "bank" the time code, allowing me to apply it to my account later on if I want to, or the option of reselling it to someone else. Thus, a new form of trading is created... those who buy the cards for low amounts of ISK and resell them for higher amounts. This could be done under the previous GTC sales rules, but you couldn't verify that a code was valid until you'd resold it and gotten a complaint from the buyer... this new system, since it checks the code's validity, would be perfect (IMO) if it allowed us this option.

You should have told us you were going to go THIS route long before you made the change. Selling ISK like SOE Station Exchange?
Not long ago you sneered them for doing that. Now you insult us by just deciding to spring it out of nowhere. We've been investing in your service for years. Somehow at somepoint you think it might have seemed a smidge prudent or at least sensible to tell us what we were getting into.

yeah banking the code can be good, but what if the seller tries to sell again the code, if it is not used(because it is banked) then he will have a working code as well <---- big issue

You can. Send the ISK to the character you want to add time to, then buy the time code with that character.

How does that fix a lapsed account though?
There needs to be some way to get ETC's on an account that isn't active or there are going to be some accounts lost to attrition.

And is it possible to buy a code to an account that is currently not activated? Because I can't check my evemail then, can I?

Let me preemptively answer some of the questions being asked here. No, I'm not the official source, I'm just using a little common sense. Mods, if I'm wrong please correct me, these are all valid questions that need to be answered about this system.
Q1) What if my account is expired? I can't get in-game to check my EVE Mail! A1) The EVE Mail only notifies you that an offer has been made. You will always be able to login to your account management page whether your account has expired or not. Thus, if you arrange through the forums to purchase a GTC for a character, and the seller says "I have sent you the GTC" - at this point you log into the secure site and accept the GTC, no need for in game action whatsoever!
Q1a) What if my expired account doesn't have the required funds in their wallet? A2a) This will not prevent you from transferring funds in from another account, at which point purchasing the GTC should not be an issue.
Q2) What if I want to buy a card for a friend? I can't purchase the code and send it to him as it's automatically applied! A2) Send your friend the ISK and let them do it themselves.
Q3) Can a trial account use this service? A3) Are you able to login to the account management page with your trial account? You are?! Congratulations, you can use this service.
Q4) I don't want to buy from nasty XYZ alliance, how am I going to know who I'm purchasing from? A4) You're not. You never did. Alts are all over the place, and it's simple for someone to create a noob-corp alt to do GTC sales with. The best you're going to be able to do is look them up in-game once you've seen their forum posting.
Q5) I want to buy a card now but use it on a different account later! How can I? A5) Um. Why? Buy the card later with the other account, problem solved.
There, I've done my charity work for ISD for the year!

I also think there may be a Tax reporting implication for what they have done.
With the old system it was impossible to track who was converting ISK into RL cash (after all you get a service for free if you pay with Isks, worth $180 pa). The new system allows you to do so. It probably helps them meet reporting requirements for impending US tax laws.

Well, one reason is that it always takes some time to find a gtc for correct price, and once you find a source you might want to buy many at once, but not USE all of them at once. No point to buy and activate gametime for year at a time, if I know I'm going for a long holiday for example. And When I get back from the holiday, I want to activate right away and set a skill on, not spend potentially days getting a gtc first. Mmm you realize you can still trade codes the old way (maybe except not advertise it on the forum) but without being covered by CCP. Or am I wrong?
tbh as others has said I'd like the ability to "bank" the code, this way I will have to send ISK around to my other accounts and buy with them instead of buying the code with this char and then apply to the account I want.
Sure I can wire the money to my other accounts first but imo it creates an extra useless step.
Just add so that the buyer can chose if it should be applied directly or be shown the code (to prevent others from selling and then using the code).
Anyway good going hope it turns out for the better.
PS. ETC traders just got screwed

All good questions and answers except this one. While it is true that if you buy from an alt you cant know who the main of that alt is unless he tells you (then proves it), this does not mean you wont have control over who you buy from.
This is how a GTC transaction will work now.
Person A pays real $$$ to buy a GTC from a 3rd party GTC seller like www.shatteredcrystal.com Person A makes a sell forum post saying he is selling GTCs for X isk. Person B sees the post and convos Person A in game (or posts) saying "Sell one to me please!" (See? Person B gets to chose who he buys from) Person A then uses the secure webpage method and sends an official offer to person B. Person B gets an CCP generated evemail stating who is selling an X day GTC and for what price. Person B logs into their account page and accepts the offer from person A. X isk is taken from person Bs wallet and added to person A's. GTC time is applied to person Bs account. GTC is now used up.

hmm possibly it would be MUCH better if the system just gave you the option to either mail you the code or to extend game time. i buy and stockpile, i even sell a few of them on for profit, this just seems overly controlling. iv bought hundereds and NEVER had a problem

Edited by: Traxman on 23/02/2007 19:06:57 Why not make it a bit more simple. Why hazzle with to whom you want to sell your Timecard to, just enter the timecard number and price, ccp verify the number and presents it as 30/50/90/100D and the amount of isk. When you logon to you account, just check the list over TCs being sold and click on what you want.
For the seller, he dont need to book a code for a special person, for the buyer he just need to check the list, and take what he want from it.
For example, the most tc sellers for me are around 7am in the morning for me(GMT+7) so i have some hard time sometimes to find one and buy it, now i could logon and take a timecard and the payment goes directly to the seller that wont be needed much time either to annouce the codes. This will also be less posts on the forum too so it saves time for us all.
Before the contract system was comming i said it should be implanted in contracts with verified code etc for easy access to them, this is a good way too.
If there is problem with the website and TC selling, would you not agree to support the TC selling atleast to the problems are solved permanent ?
Added:
As Chribba said, why not even have a input field where we could enter the chars name we want to transfer the code too ? )

For me, the ability to bank GTC is quite important. Finding a good price can be tricky, and being capable of choosing when to renew is something I'd like to control.

"Ebaying" is a synonym for RMT as kleenex is a synonym for tissues. You dont actually need ebay to "ebay" ...

Seems like the new application still needs refinement. Cash is wired but wallet icon does not get updated. Wallet itself does though. Also seems safari and firefox are generating errors on final acception.

CCP should apply the code DIRECTLY on receipt to the account. I am sure that ETC Resellers (there are probably -0- legit ones who arent breaking the TOS) will love this feature and hate it at the same time.
But lets keep in mind here, most people buy codes to use, and NOW it can be done with no scamming. Some people are saying "wow, this is lame, scamming wasnt a big issue" but they are not considering what happens when someone pulls in say 6b, sends out 2b to random chars, and then sells 4b and sends out rougly the same amount. This change will stop a LOT of hassle that the GM's have while removing 100% of hassle that players get from this.
As for some people saying "way to go ccp, we cant sell our isk any more by buying time codes and selling them for cash"... That was against the rules anyhow so who gives a flying F***..

I do think that a way to "bank" the code would rock, but that would mean that resellers can use the codes. I dont want to see the code apply'd directly to the account (it means that lock'd older accounts (I have like 4) cant be unlock'd at a later date (eeek)...
But all in all I love that ccp has done this and I WISH that there was a way to let more players know about this path. I hate the idea of some pud making 2k$ a week on ebay while some nublet ends up getting banned cause he doesnt know there's a better way.

Ever hear of market makers in the real world? People buying/reselling the codes were creating liquidity -- at any one moment I knew I could go to e.g. Won Ton and either buy or sell a GTC without waiting. Yeah, it cost me probably 20M for the privilege, but the convenience was worth it to me. Now I have to post to the forum and hope someone is willing to take the other side of the trade when I want to make the trade, and for an amount I wish to trade for.
Still, a pretty minor inconvenience, and many leaps in the right direction. But you are wrong re: nobody cares about the GTC traders.

All this replaces is the end of the transaction. You still have to find someone selling a card and tell them you want it, so they can put their character name and yours into the system. It's not like you're going to an anonymous list of cards, picking one out, and paying for it. |
