Fresh from GDC: EVE Online multiplayer space game is Macbound.
Awesome news. Please don't let this become a PC vs Mac debate thread either. :)

Heh nice, ive recently tried out one of the new Intel specc'd MacBooks, and i must say they are damn nice machines, very well build with a OS that isnt that hard to use (Me having never used Mac OS before). Personally i cant wait to try eve out on it, my only worry is.. what about the Right mouse button??, Mac laptops still only come with one button although you can pull down a context menu by clicking while holding control.

Edited by: RazzleStorm on 09/03/2007 19:19:42 I'm on a Macbook, and love EVE, so I just went and bought a cheap mouse so I can right click. Great news to hear. Wonder how it'll work with Leopard (when it comes out).

You can plug in a mouse with a right mouse button and it'll work. Alternately, you can use control-click to get the same behavior with the single button mouse, or just look in the menus for the same thing.
I'd love to see how EVE performs on the new Macs myself. And it doesn't hurt to introduce a whole other market to EVE. :)

Well, you have two options:
a) You can configure the trackpad so that tapping two fingers == right click, b) Buy a standard mouse. They work no problem with Macs. Special software (e.g. Logitech's SetPoint) is a problem however; no Mac version for that.
I'd suggest (b). It's way easier. :)
Also. Even the best of MacBooks doesn't have a dedicated video card; only Intel's 950 - not really the best for gaming. So you might wanna go for MacBook Pro there.

Unless they change the fact that Eve uses DirectX I'd expect it to run a lot slower as DirectX would probably have to be simulated, or they'd have to invest the time in a complete rewrite for Mac machines.

Right now that's not so much of an issue since EVE's heavily CPU-bound. Still, MacBook Pros are really nice. :)
Hopefully the new improved clients coming down the pipe will scale down to accomodate loadouts like the MacBooks with less-than-optimal configurations.

Definitely good news, my main machine while away from home (which being at Uni means most of the time) is a MacBook Pro, I shall certainly look forward to not having to reboot into windows everytime I want to play a bit of EVE.
Now if every game would release Mac and Linux editions and if you bought one then you would be allowed to run it on any platform you wanted. But thats probably too much to ask for.

True, true.
However, if you are gonna buy a Mac laptop with any sort of gaming in mind, MBP is certainly a better choice.

According to the article it is just going to be using Cedega (wine) on the intel macs to run, so I don't expect it would be any slower on the macs than it is on linux right now.

It won't handle it, since DX10 is Vista only (blame MS). That's ok though since it doesn't have to, the DX9 client looks to be amazing by its own right. The stuff they showed at Fanfest last November was with the DX9 engine, and even though we were all hungover from the night before, everyone was suitably amazed.

It is actually possible to run EvE on a mac today, as a mate of mine did it.
I'm not sure exactly what kind of mac it was, all I know is that it was a laptop, and white.
Anyway, the performance was alright, ran at about 20 fps at 1024x768. It had some glitches however, none of the portraits worked (they were only multicoloured blurs) but besides that, it was in fact running smoothly. ------------------------- Sigs are for noobs. |

You can run Eve in Crossover 6.0, with a couple of tweaks. It's not fast enough for combat (even on my Pro), but it's nice to be able to log in and change skills without having to boot into windows.
The Macbook Pros have ATI x1600s in them, I run two clients on mine every day, quite happily.
But a Cider client will be awesome, I just hope they have some rendering trick that the Crossover people don't, so we can get better framerates and full-screen.

This isn't news. It's just "Hey guys! You can run Eve on your Mac using a third party windows emulator, just like you can on Linux right now!"
Wake me up when Eve runs natively on Linux or Macs without having to wait for Transgaming to work around Eve issues after patches and such.

So official 'news' to the stuff we down in the tech forum have been yackin' about for awhile. Thanks for that link Winter.
As for specifics, cedega is the 'root' so to speak of what cider is, and THAT (cedega for linux) has been working VERY well for some time now. There is a performance penalty, but not as much of one as some people intimate in this thread.
What WILL be interesting, once this is actually released, is to see how CCP and Transgaming co-operate on the larger patches. To this point, its been hit or miss since they began communicating with each other. (Granting that one patch that messed up was actually CCP's fault, and once they fixed their own patch, cedega worked flawlessly with NO patching.)
To point out, wine for mac does run EVE now, but the performance hit has been pretty bad with a few ineresting twists and turns in setting it up.
On the linux side, its runs with wine (thanks to the tireless efforts of elfiger and a few others) very well (nearly as good fps as the cedega client).
It is VERY nice to see CCP broadening their reach by acknowledging and supporting MORE than just the microsoft platform.
