Could be good news since I've been looking for reasons why *not* to *ever* use windows or upgrade to Windows vista.
However I'm not fond of the people who brought us Codega either. Seems the have Gypped the OSS community and leveraged alot of work other people have done for free.

My second game machine is realy for upgrade, but I too don't want to go Vista. Trying to read up now on MAC's. Anyone have any hints? i was thinking of either the 24 inch IMAC or the laptop.

You cry to mucheth over not much methinks. Been working just fine for me for quite some time now...and doesn't "suck".
At this point with MACs and linux having a much smaller share of the overall market, most of us are happy as hell that CCP is paying attention to us...at all. Would we like more? Hell yeah. Duh.
1/2 full is my cup, and while I WOULD like native "native", at least I don't have to shell out bucks or steal/pirate an entire overrated buggy viral prone operating system to join in the virutal world that is EVE.

Yeah, but how many of those do you use on a regular basis? (If you say all 10 you're a freak :) )
I'd be interested in reading a dev blog on the subject, by someone involved in getting the client functioning on OS X. Would love to hear some technical tidbits on what kind of challengs there were and what Mac users can expect from this, if there's any differences between the PC version an Mac version that are notable, etc.

Four (left/right regular buttons, and back/forward for browsing). That's not the point, the point is that the Mac one mouse button myth needs to die.
Besides, it's not like the portables need an external mouse to right-click either.

Oh I know the myth needs to die, I have a Mac (been too lazy to buy a two-button mouse for it too, so control-click is almost second nature now).

QFT, HAR HAR.
Seriously though, the man has a point. This is just another quick-fix to get some more playerbase. How about actually fixing bugs first? I can see a lot more pain coming from this. Mac users being unable to play after client patches, bugs in the emulation software, even worse rendering during fleet fights (lol) and other stuff.
That being said I think using Cider is a weak choice, it wont run nearly as well as it could with native code, right? Do it proper or don't do it all. People already have Crossover.

if new macOs's are BSD based , and BSD came from the same source as Linux -> that means I will run eve on gentoo natively (cause they would have to write openGL, to support mac) ------------- Gloomy Domesticated Ass |

Actually awox, as a current cedega/linux user, my experience with patches/updates and gameplay have been surprisingly smooth. We only had one revelations patch that actually caused problems, and it turned out to be a ccp issue that affected even the windows users. As for the rendering, my framerate at 1900x1200 fullscreen during fleet actions has actually been fairly close if not the same as the native client. (Recent FREGE action vs. RATEL in a multiple carrier fight was eminently playable.)
The crossover product for mac is still not quite there yet, from the reports from folks down in the tech forum, but it is improving quite quickly.
While we linux/mac users would prefer "native" as in opengl, the fact is there are quite a lot of us who are able to not only run the EVE client, but run it very very well. For CCP to open its arms and acknowledge that windows isn't the only platform out there, and work with the companies that are trying to get applications on these platforms is a good thing.
As for Cider, its been getting quite a bit of scrutiny, and several game companies have already decided that its good enough to use with their games. CCP, for all of your complaints, is a business, and can only stay in business by broadening its base. I have read your post and your points on some of EVE's shortcomings, and while I won't disagree with all of them, I HAVE been involved in EVE since 6/03, and its not as bad as you are portraying it. -my opinion, mileage will vary.

I do assemble my own PCs, have been for over 10 years! Any one remmber Slot A's??? . I am just getting tried of Billy's **** and will not EVER upgrade to Vista. So I am happy that I my have a choice and can use a MAC to play eve. The main thing that has held me back from using a MAC is game play.

Ding ding ding!!!! You found the second Mac myth that needs to die, congratulations! Go look up the prices, and STFU. Mac Pro's were last time I checked VERY cheap compared to their competition. Also, if it's not cheaper, think what you get for the extra money, and again, STFU.
Now I've vented a bit too, I very rarely flame.

Besides, Macs and Linux are only safe for the same reason nobody makes anything for them, 5% of the market share.
As for Vista, thats a scary prospect. I'm waiting a couple months before I think about it. Since I use it at work all the time I'll let you know how realistic the rep is =)

Just a 'For Your Info' folks.
The current generation of Macs all come with a multi-button mouse in the box.
It may look like one button, but they've been kind of sneaky to keep the image of one button.
Its actually 2 touch sensitive halfs under the one shell. so you can left or right click. It all so has a little scroll wheel and a squeezy button from each side.
Eve under bootcamp (into XP) works like a charm with the mouse.
Hopefully the emulation will be fine, even if just for changing training and market stuff.
yay for CCP! |
