Fresh from GDC: EVE Online multiplayer space game is Macbound.
Awesome news. Please don't let this become a PC vs Mac debate thread either. :)

Heh nice, ive recently tried out one of the new Intel specc'd MacBooks, and i must say they are damn nice machines, very well build with a OS that isnt that hard to use (Me having never used Mac OS before). Personally i cant wait to try eve out on it, my only worry is.. what about the Right mouse button??, Mac laptops still only come with one button although you can pull down a context menu by clicking while holding control.

Edited by: RazzleStorm on 09/03/2007 19:19:42 I'm on a Macbook, and love EVE, so I just went and bought a cheap mouse so I can right click. Great news to hear. Wonder how it'll work with Leopard (when it comes out).

You can plug in a mouse with a right mouse button and it'll work. Alternately, you can use control-click to get the same behavior with the single button mouse, or just look in the menus for the same thing.
I'd love to see how EVE performs on the new Macs myself. And it doesn't hurt to introduce a whole other market to EVE. :)

Well, you have two options:
a) You can configure the trackpad so that tapping two fingers == right click, b) Buy a standard mouse. They work no problem with Macs. Special software (e.g. Logitech's SetPoint) is a problem however; no Mac version for that.
I'd suggest (b). It's way easier. :)
Also. Even the best of MacBooks doesn't have a dedicated video card; only Intel's 950 - not really the best for gaming. So you might wanna go for MacBook Pro there.

Unless they change the fact that Eve uses DirectX I'd expect it to run a lot slower as DirectX would probably have to be simulated, or they'd have to invest the time in a complete rewrite for Mac machines.

Right now that's not so much of an issue since EVE's heavily CPU-bound. Still, MacBook Pros are really nice. :)
Hopefully the new improved clients coming down the pipe will scale down to accomodate loadouts like the MacBooks with less-than-optimal configurations.

Definitely good news, my main machine while away from home (which being at Uni means most of the time) is a MacBook Pro, I shall certainly look forward to not having to reboot into windows everytime I want to play a bit of EVE.
Now if every game would release Mac and Linux editions and if you bought one then you would be allowed to run it on any platform you wanted. But thats probably too much to ask for.

True, true.
However, if you are gonna buy a Mac laptop with any sort of gaming in mind, MBP is certainly a better choice.

According to the article it is just going to be using Cedega (wine) on the intel macs to run, so I don't expect it would be any slower on the macs than it is on linux right now.

It won't handle it, since DX10 is Vista only (blame MS). That's ok though since it doesn't have to, the DX9 client looks to be amazing by its own right. The stuff they showed at Fanfest last November was with the DX9 engine, and even though we were all hungover from the night before, everyone was suitably amazed.

It is actually possible to run EvE on a mac today, as a mate of mine did it.
I'm not sure exactly what kind of mac it was, all I know is that it was a laptop, and white.
Anyway, the performance was alright, ran at about 20 fps at 1024x768. It had some glitches however, none of the portraits worked (they were only multicoloured blurs) but besides that, it was in fact running smoothly. ------------------------- Sigs are for noobs. |

You can run Eve in Crossover 6.0, with a couple of tweaks. It's not fast enough for combat (even on my Pro), but it's nice to be able to log in and change skills without having to boot into windows.
The Macbook Pros have ATI x1600s in them, I run two clients on mine every day, quite happily.
But a Cider client will be awesome, I just hope they have some rendering trick that the Crossover people don't, so we can get better framerates and full-screen.

This isn't news. It's just "Hey guys! You can run Eve on your Mac using a third party windows emulator, just like you can on Linux right now!"
Wake me up when Eve runs natively on Linux or Macs without having to wait for Transgaming to work around Eve issues after patches and such.

So official 'news' to the stuff we down in the tech forum have been yackin' about for awhile. Thanks for that link Winter.
As for specifics, cedega is the 'root' so to speak of what cider is, and THAT (cedega for linux) has been working VERY well for some time now. There is a performance penalty, but not as much of one as some people intimate in this thread.
What WILL be interesting, once this is actually released, is to see how CCP and Transgaming co-operate on the larger patches. To this point, its been hit or miss since they began communicating with each other. (Granting that one patch that messed up was actually CCP's fault, and once they fixed their own patch, cedega worked flawlessly with NO patching.)
To point out, wine for mac does run EVE now, but the performance hit has been pretty bad with a few ineresting twists and turns in setting it up.
On the linux side, its runs with wine (thanks to the tireless efforts of elfiger and a few others) very well (nearly as good fps as the cedega client).
It is VERY nice to see CCP broadening their reach by acknowledging and supporting MORE than just the microsoft platform.

You cry to mucheth over not much methinks. Been working just fine for me for quite some time now...and doesn't "suck".
At this point with MACs and linux having a much smaller share of the overall market, most of us are happy as hell that CCP is paying attention to us...at all. Would we like more? Hell yeah. Duh.
1/2 full is my cup, and while I WOULD like native "native", at least I don't have to shell out bucks or steal/pirate an entire overrated buggy viral prone operating system to join in the virutal world that is EVE.

Yeah, but how many of those do you use on a regular basis? (If you say all 10 you're a freak :) )
I'd be interested in reading a dev blog on the subject, by someone involved in getting the client functioning on OS X. Would love to hear some technical tidbits on what kind of challengs there were and what Mac users can expect from this, if there's any differences between the PC version an Mac version that are notable, etc.

Four (left/right regular buttons, and back/forward for browsing). That's not the point, the point is that the Mac one mouse button myth needs to die.
Besides, it's not like the portables need an external mouse to right-click either.

QFT, HAR HAR.
Seriously though, the man has a point. This is just another quick-fix to get some more playerbase. How about actually fixing bugs first? I can see a lot more pain coming from this. Mac users being unable to play after client patches, bugs in the emulation software, even worse rendering during fleet fights (lol) and other stuff.
That being said I think using Cider is a weak choice, it wont run nearly as well as it could with native code, right? Do it proper or don't do it all. People already have Crossover.

Actually awox, as a current cedega/linux user, my experience with patches/updates and gameplay have been surprisingly smooth. We only had one revelations patch that actually caused problems, and it turned out to be a ccp issue that affected even the windows users. As for the rendering, my framerate at 1900x1200 fullscreen during fleet actions has actually been fairly close if not the same as the native client. (Recent FREGE action vs. RATEL in a multiple carrier fight was eminently playable.)
The crossover product for mac is still not quite there yet, from the reports from folks down in the tech forum, but it is improving quite quickly.
While we linux/mac users would prefer "native" as in opengl, the fact is there are quite a lot of us who are able to not only run the EVE client, but run it very very well. For CCP to open its arms and acknowledge that windows isn't the only platform out there, and work with the companies that are trying to get applications on these platforms is a good thing.
As for Cider, its been getting quite a bit of scrutiny, and several game companies have already decided that its good enough to use with their games. CCP, for all of your complaints, is a business, and can only stay in business by broadening its base. I have read your post and your points on some of EVE's shortcomings, and while I won't disagree with all of them, I HAVE been involved in EVE since 6/03, and its not as bad as you are portraying it. -my opinion, mileage will vary.

Hehe! That's a classic. I still get a good laugh when I watch that clip.

Just a 'For Your Info' folks.
The current generation of Macs all come with a multi-button mouse in the box.
It may look like one button, but they've been kind of sneaky to keep the image of one button.
Its actually 2 touch sensitive halfs under the one shell. so you can left or right click. It all so has a little scroll wheel and a squeezy button from each side.
Eve under bootcamp (into XP) works like a charm with the mouse.
Hopefully the emulation will be fine, even if just for changing training and market stuff.
yay for CCP! |

For those who think right click is not possible on mac:
--> hold two fingers on trackpac and click on mouse button... whola... you have a "right click button menu"..
I am a recent Mac converter (one month) and using the track pad on mac is much smoother than on pc once you get used to it. After 17 years on pc, I am surprised how easy the transition was. AND you dont have to reboot your machine after several hybernation session like on XP.

That'd be the Mighty Mouse. The touch sensitive clicking thing is brilliant, but the wheel (actually a small ball instead of a wheel) is horrid. It jams up easily, feels flimsy, and there's no way to clean it. I own one, used it for a few months, then tossed it in favor of a more conventional USB mouse. Wanted to love it though. :)
Of course you can always get a right click action with the control button. Control-clicking on a Mac is the same as a right click (though obviously not as simple).

If you think that the whining on the forums is bad now, wait until all the Mac users start flooding the forums with their tech support questions.
Both times I have ever used a Mac, it was given to me by my Uni. The reason they give us a MacBook to run Office in the first place is beyond me, but both times I have had horrible experiences with them. They are nothing more then trendy. Steve Jobs gloats about hows Macs never crash, but both my MacBooks had to be re-imaged upwards of 4 to 5 times over the 2 month span I had each of them.
Macs arent meant for gaming, they are meant for talking to your friends on iChat and taking funky camera pictures for Myspace. At least most of them will be total noobs. Guess I gotta get out and start baiting people in Deadspace 1.0's again. ___________________

And explain to me how that is any different than Dell with Windows? Or a HP with Windows? Or any other system with Windows on it?
Let me relate my gaming experience with a intel based Macbook Pro. I have played World of Warcraft, Privateer, Homeworld 2, etc., for several hours/days on it. Not one crash. You just had bad luck with it like hundreds of thousands of PC buyers have every day.

Try this one if you are on a Mac using Tiger 10.4 ... hold control and mouse wheel in (or out).
I can see for miles and miles....
=)
Honestly though, I'd just buy parallels for mac, and run Windoze in a window...

Well Im certainly not experiencing this behaviour and I am working in the academic enviroment. The only software that has chrashed on the Mac is offcourse Microsoft office 2004 and that is because it is run in Rosetta ( the ppc emulator since msoffice is from 2003). Microsoft say they are going to make an intel mac native office environment in the new version but im waiting on what Pages3 will bring on the arena. Hopefully it will be Endnote compatable (its a deal breaker for me). Otherwise I have not had anything but pleasant experience.

This is fantastic news, and it might just solve my next upgrade problem. I want the new Eve graphic engine when it finally arrives but I will *never* use Vista. If I have the option of just buying a new sweet Macbook instead of dealing with umbuntu and emulaters?! go CCP!

Just to clarify this 'hold two fingers on trackpac and click on mouse button... whola... you have a "right click button menu"..'
For those who don't know why the right-click still isn't working you'll need to enable ths in the macos System Preferences under Keyboard & Mouse.

apple is making a big announcement soon. its not ipod related is the general speculation about the upcomming news. so its thought they are changing there desktops and maybe giving customers more video card options other then the out dated ones currently offered not to mention how marked up they are as is.

This is a disaster for the community. It needs to be fixed for winblows before other platforms should be even considered. If/when that day does come, Macs aren't the best choice anyway.

ARGH NOOO!!!
Now we will forever have starbucks drinking, tight jean wearing, emo hairstyl-ing, thinks-they-are-the-best mac FANBOIS in our game... argh.
I hate macs. I also thought it was pretty pathetic when people thought the iPhone was the be all and end all of phones, and how people cried over it.
