Ok, I understand the setups fairly well, but MY question is, what sort of drones should I use to protect myself? At the moment I'm using Hobgoblin II's which is more then fine for Hi-security rats, but I know that wont work in other places or against pvp attackers

Nice thread this - came in very helpful for me looking for a hulk tanking-setup.
Lots of the setup suggestions are the same, suggesting there is a 'best' setup for 0.0 mining. Does anyone know/think that the setup needs to be tweaked or fine-tuned if you're in a gang whereby the gang leader is using the shield boosting mods?
My plan is to use the three shield boosting mods that are available for gangs, the one that decreases shield rep cycle time, the one that reduces shield rep cap usage, and the one that improves resistances. also wanna use some shield repping drones to help top-up the shields on the hulks that are being targeted by 0.0 rats.
Your thoughts, please.

I think the general idea is not to have to tackle other players in your hulk - you cannot defend against that.
I personally think that Hulks should get another mid slot..... ------ THE TX |

Originally by: Chris31miller I have no experience mining in 0.0 or lowsec with my hulk yet but .5 systems and higher. I use Pithi/Gisti (at work and not in game, can't remember) b-type small booster. They are just as good without the 200 mil price. picked mine up for 15 mil if I remember. I also picked up a c-type (once again cant remember if it was a pithi or Gisti) for 6 mil. They are out there just keep an eye on the contract. But on average run 15-25 mil for b and c types.
Tank better? Sure, but check your cap recharge. Gistii-A usually can permatank. Pithi is a much higher activation (well, much higher for a Hulk).

Heyya GNG -
In the vid I used:
Highs: 1x Strip Miner (to look real and pass the time), 2x Small T2 NOSes Mid: 1x T2 Small shield booster (or sometimes Gist A-type), 1x best named web, 1x best named scram, and then something utility - sometime ECM, sometimes invuln field or whatever Lows: 2x WCS (big wuss, I know)
No rigs.
However - I have a much better (win or die - none of this warp core stabs malarkey any more) setup nowadays - esp post the NOS nerf, as follows:
Highs: 1x Strip, 2x T2 Small Neuts Mids: 1x T2 Small Shield Booster, 1x best named web, 1x best named scram, 1x Jammer Lows: 1x DCU II, 1x Shield Relay
No rigs (though I'd fit shield recharge rigs if I could be bothered).
That second Hulk fit works a treat. If you're solely looking for PvP, and the ore thieves aren't paying any attention at all, you might be able to squeeze a third T2 Neut instead of the strip for maximum lulz.
Fly safe o/
EDIT: I realise this build doesn't answer the OPs question, as it has little-to-nothing to do with mining. It's just a response to GNGs q about combat Hulks.

And doh - forgot to mention drones.
Again, this varied a bit from fight to fight, but was most often 5x Hammerhead IIs. Sometimes I'd mix this up a bit (3x Hammerhead IIs and 4x Warrior IIs) as spares do come in handy.
As the drones are your only method of directly dealing any damage I really can't stress the importance of having decent drone skills enough. You'll want Drones V, Scout Drones V, Combat Drones V, Drone Sharpshooting IV, Drone Durability IV, Drone Navigation IV & Drone Interfacing IV as a bare minimum before really trying this setup against anything larger than frigs.
It's a bit Catch-22. The dronebay and bandwidth limits on the Hulk and the inability to fit any other damage-dealing weapon types pretty much mean that you can only fight very small ships, and very small ships tend to be the best and popping drones (in a non-smartbomb Empire context anyway). ---------------------------------------------- Hulk Combat - When Carebears Attack! |

Ah...I have a Question for Y'all w/ the understanding that I learned My 0.0 mining from a guy who takes home 1.5 bil a week, mining Merc, Ark, Bist, and Crok. This may not impress y'all, but impressed the hell out of me.
The Question: If you can permatank the spawn, why kill it off? Let it shoot you till the cows come home. No more spawns arrive, and your mining Drones are safe. I've done this for Hours. Comments?
Oh, and to the guy with the BC in the Gang and the shield links...?!? Have him perma tank the Spawn, yank out those shield links and throw in Mining Director links, and Really go to town! This was SOP for our mining Ops. Comments on that one?
I won't even go into the guy in the Rorq, defending 5 miners from a PVP fleet of Vagas and Ishtars who said in local "You need to up your dps...I can do this all day..."

has anybody experience with tanking 0.0 drone npc's in a hulk ? i"m about to try it with the standard fitting but was wondering if someone got any good tips for me !
in worst case scenario i'll just have 2 accounts mining with shield maintenance drones healing each other. that should do the job, but i'd rather be able to tank with only 1 hulk.
thx in advance for any suggestions.

I'm a lone 0.0 miner and have been for along time now, i'll sit in a side belt away from the main belt and work the roids around me as need, sometimes i have a bonus but often not, this is my setup for a kinetic/heat tank which runs permanently and without care for what spawn attacks, 6 * cruiser spawns dont even bother this, i know its not the gisti setup and yes you do have to cycle the strippers 1minute apart, but it works and runs safely :-) Alot of these modules i managed to pick up either cheap or through plexer's looking to sell quick. Allas EA has caused a drastic increase in the dread CPU need hence the low slot cpu module now, prior that was a cargo expander. Many may wonder why a split tank? With with up to 40% heat damage from hybrid ammo the effective shield without it quickly drops under 8k, as my setup its easily 11k and if pure kinetic only damage tops out around 15k effective shield. Not to shabby really. Many people have asked me for my setup and followed happily, so thought i would finally share it with you all, have a laugh, i am sure others will not agree with my selection, all i can say is thank EFT for this.
Top Strip Miner II * 3
Mid Pithi B-Type Small Shield Booster Dread Guristas Shield Boost Amplifier Dread Guristas Heat Dissipation Amplifier Gist C-Type Ballistic Deflection Field
Low CPU Module of some kind due to change in DG CPU need Mining Laser Upgrade II
Rigs Capacitor Control Circuit I Anti-Kinetic Screen Reinforcer I
Drone: 5 * vespa T2's, kills up to 1mil rats, above one has to tank or get in a ratter if the booms get to annoying, lol. |

Wowie...to need such a huge tank, you must be living in some very nice real estate. I've never encountered a spawn that would require a Pithi-B AND a shield boost amp. |

3x stripminers 1x roid scanner 2, (3x any thing you want) 2x MLU 2's
1+ cargo optimiser's rigs
5 mining drones 2's 5 hobgoblin 2 or sheild rep drones
and just let the rats agro you and then release the mining drones and mine. you need the tech 2 roid scanner when you have a rorqual or fleet command ship with 3 mining gang mods as the range one will give you 22.5km range with strip miners. With gang mods and maxed skill you get around 2k m3 per of ore min with the drones

well i use this against sansha in 0.0, so far ive been able to tank 3 900k BS spawn with 2 frigs and no problem at all:
High: 3x MSM II Meds: 1x Pithi b-type shield booster 1x Pith b-type photon scattering field 1x Pith b-type heat dissipation field 1x Viscoelastic EM ward salubrity Low: 1x MLU II 1x PDU II Rigs: Anti-EM screen Anti-therm screen
Skills used: All shield related to 4 but shield ops that is at 5 Exhumers 5 Cap related at 5 can permarun everything just by staggering a little the strips.

End-o-Story
You must not mine in true low sec space or with Sansha's! I have this exact setup and last night came within 2 seconds of losing my new hulk to a triple 950,000 isk Sansha BS spawn with a few frigs as well. They tore through my defenses like I didn't even have a shield booster on. I'm going to ditch the cargo rigs, ditch the cargo expanders, ditch the T2 cap recharger, and fit 2 cap recharge rigs, add a second gistii-a shield booster, and fit a mix of PDU T2's and mining upgrades if I can use a mining upgrade with this setup and run the tank, i'm not sure, and possibly shell out 100 mil a piece for some faction hardeners. of course sansha's are the hulks weak spot, so that doesn't help. But I can literally be torn to the ground in a matter of seconds, imagine if a triple 1.7mil BS spawn would've jumped on top of me? I'd be short a hulk right now I can tell you that much. And I'm caldari and have pretty decent shield skills...
I'm sorry you nearly lost your Hulk. It is not a nice experience. Can I suggest you use the setup below. It can tank anything you can throw at it & it was unfazed even by a pith swarm throwing out buckets of damage. I can vouch for its effectiveness having used the fit for nearly 3 months without any rat busting it.
Low
2 True Sansha Power Diagnostics
Mids
Gistii A-type small shield Booster & Amplifier, Dread Guristas Invulnerability Field, Dread Guristas explosion dampening field (or other rat type)
Highs
Strip miners of Choice
Rigs
2 capacitor control circuits
This fit will run indefinetly and the only time you ever need to pulse the strip miners is when you use deepcore mining versions. Good luck with your mining & watch out for Neuts as this fit is a "paradise" find if you get caught.

sensor upgrade for range so that you can make a bit of money from the rats while you mine in 0.0 and it is able to tank 3x Drone queen bs's long enough to kill them and recharge the shields. the Hulk has good base resists you just need to buff up the EM in the drone regions and the others for the other regions that can be Faction Specific. but with my crappy skills I get it up to pretty good tanking about 500DPS permantly w/ cycling the lasers so that you get time to recharge the cap.

I would like to ask a few drone questions. I have noticed no Vespa II drones are used. Why? I am training Caldari Adv Drone and would like to know if I am wasting my time. In addition, why do ppl not use the EW Vespa drones? I am thinking that 1 or 2 would allow a pilot to break the targeting process (specifically warp jammers)... What is wrong with my drone plan?

I couldn't find Gistii mods for ages when I first started mining in 0.0 so had x2 CCC in rig slots & just used x1 t2 small shield booster and x3 t2 expl damp fields in the mids & swapping my mining drones for t2 valks. Boosted my exp dam resist to 93% & was able to tank all Angel spawns incl Seraphim & Cherubim & just used the valks to kill the frigs. Criminal, I know but it worked . Now I just use the "classic" set-up.

Ok here's my weird Hulk setup. My goal was to be able to tank 0.0 bs spawns without sacrificing any mining yield. (I couldn't bring myself to put T1 MLU's on my Hulk.)
Lows: 2x Mining Laser Upgrade II Mids: Gistii A-Type Small Shield Booster Copasetic I Particle Field Acceleration Azeotropic EM Ward Salubrity Supplemental Thermal Barrier Emitter Highs: 3x Modulated Strip Miner II Rigs: 2x Core Defense Operational Solidifier I
Tanks 176 DPS omni while maintaining a full rack of t2 mlu's in the lows.
Shield resists are: 57/65.6/62.5/75 and the booster gives 74.1 shield boost every 1.445 seconds. Tank and strip miners perma-run, as long as you stagger them a bit.
The hardeners were chosen for the drone regions. I've tanked a single bs spawn there with it easily. It couldn't even dent the tank, but I never got to try a triple before leaving that area. |
