The CCP HQ is in Iceland, the server clusters are far from the U.S., but thanks for blindly flaming.
How the frack is that relevent...
Quote: CCP Games is searching for producers, programmers, artists, animation directors, testers and sound designers for creative game development. The company is hiring for positions in Atlanta, Georgia; Shanghai, China and to enhance the team for our headquarters in Reykjavik, Iceland.
Is it really too much to expect that the d/t could rotate during the week so the same group of people aren't flogged continually day after day week after week. CCP has three offices in three different time zones and in most cases all of the server maintenance could be done remotely. Wake up and join the 20th Century.

Edited by: Geee69 on 22/03/2007 13:21:12 I think it isn't too much. Just enough...
btw I think the most painful think is we talking about these DTs a lot in these day (nowadays there are a lot of unsceduled / extended DT) and I haven't read any post from any dev or tech or affected ppl in these threads who said at least "sorry ppl we we failed" or whatever... Or just I missed something?

To the people who think that most servers don't have downtime every day.... I laugh at you. If you have EVER worked on a busy server, you know that the server has to go down at some point in the day to fix problems that will pop up during use by thousands of connection. EVE is the single largest game server in the WORLD. Problems can be expected because of the sheer number of people who use this. And just as a note, DT is scheduled for when the fewest people are online every day, to try and minimize who its hurts. Its not just based on the US. And the company isn't US based either, so thats not the problem. And you also have to remember, if you have DT rotating, the server admins have to start rotating THEIR schedule, and thats hard on them.
Yes, I understand that having DT while you play is a royal pain, and I feel sorry for you, but there is only so many ways that they can work DT that won't have EVERYONE (and the staff) *****ing instead of just a small number of people.

Yes you should. My point of contention was not that the servers require patching/reboots etc but that CCP with the gobs of money they accept from non US base players persist with the interruptions to core playing time for these regions. If you add up patch delays and non patch delays and work out how much they consume of actual playing time versus a total days worth then I feel justified in my complaint.
Oh and my mum says Hi.

Rebooting the server cluster once a day to me means that the game architecture is fragile. Why couldn't we have a reboot every other day? Or maybe a 2 hour reboot once a week? Will the game hold up for 7 days? Will the database get so cluttered and un-optimized that it will run like a windows OS that has been up for 20 days (ie. super-decayed performance).
If it really can't last more than 24 hours with a reboot to clean things up CCP has some serious design issues to fix. If the reboot isn't about optimizing performance then moving to a weekly reboot doesnt seem like too much to ask. I'm in the US and am asleep during the time so I'm not bothered 99% of the time (except i got up real early to play today--for once--and I guess I didn't pick the right day). If I were in Europe, especially on Saturday or Sunday, I would NOT BE HAPPY to see a mid-day interuption.
And by the way, most other high-end MMO's do not to daily reboots. They can frequently go for weeks between reboots (or player booting "dinner breaks" if you dont want to call it a reboot). Daily reboots should not be accpetable in a 4 year old game that touts having a far more advanced architecture than other MMOs.

Right, and your vast knowledge of -what- makes you the person to decide this?
Like someone above this said, EVE is running on 1 server, most servers, if a single server is down, the world is shunted onto another server, and you never notice. The server for EVE is so large its not financially feasible to run a 2nd copy of the full server. So when something goes wrong, which happens a LOT after patches (you may claim its not so, but I remember patches on a LOT of games, and this is pretty standard), you tend to have some problems getting things started or working right for the first week. After that it calms down and works until the next patch.
