I've seen 3 killmails in the last month where pirates completely destroy 3-10 billion worth of modules, BPO's, BPC's and swag. I can't help but think you people are more than just annoying, but a danger to all the unique items in this game.
Stop blowing up perfectly goods you TooLs, makes everything else more expensive for all of us.

Constraints on supply of items, especially the rare/unique ones, are a constant challenge in any MMO. Better that there's a player-facilitated chokepoint on such goods than more artificial options like CCP reducing drop rates or ability to get items.
I wouldn't like it any more than you do, but I'd prefer it to the alternative. At least in this system if you lose something it's to player action, and there's ways to prevent it.

Hahaha Somebody pod that guy... Pirates have always enjoyed and loved the free life on the hunt for treassures and being hunted by bounty hunters and police force... I am myself not a pirate.. But I think the aspect of pirating in Eve is just extreme well placed.. It would not be fun if you could enter low sec or 0.0 and then people ask you (do you have any very rare items in your hold) and if you tell them that you have then you just pass along.. Pirates make my currier missions SOOOO much fun when I have to enter low sec and escpape from a 10 BS gang in my badger II fitted for a run with 3 wcs and shield hardners and booster :P That was just awesome... The idea of NOT being able to feel completely safe in space is something that makes me log on to eve over and over and over...

Well im not a pirate but im not dumb enouph to see the importance of them in the game. Supply and demand. If ppl never loose there ship there would be no supply. Why do you have those BPO and BPC? To make mods to supply the demand. Where is the supply coming from? The piolts that lost there ships to pirates. ^_^

Imagine this: You have 1 of about 100 of a very rare item. Say it's going price is 300 million. Suddenly, due to piracy, there are only 95 now in existence. 350 million is the new price tag suddenly. So, it's a form of inflation, which in one way or another is essential to offset the constant flow of ISK into the economy from mining and missions. If they have something realy expensive in their hold you could offer to let them go with their ship and everything else intact if they just jettison what you want.
Its not like their going to be getting anythign back if you pop their ship, only insurance and frankly ransoming cargo items would probably work more often than demanding super high ISK ransoms under the assumption they have tons of expensive implants fitted. ------------------------------- C.D's Formula for success ------------------------------- Credit Card = Game Time Card Gametime Card = ISK Therefore Credit Card = ISK.

As much as I would love to see nothing dissapearing from the game, it is a part of it. As a side note, the devs most likely know when an item is destroyed. The game might actually spawn that item again once destroyed. A much bigger problem for loss of items comes from people who have these items and don't play anymore. I was out scanning with a corp mate a few months ago and found a Cruise Kestral. Has been banned from the game. At one point you could mount 4 cruise launchers on a tech I frig like atleast 2 years ago. I still have the ship in a hanger and it only still has one shot each on the launchers.. can't reload it . With the new rules to scanning and probing, the systems should be cleanned up pretty soon. As for players that have quit, there hangers and loaded ships most likely have more rare items than the pirates can destroy. Again, at least destroyed items are possibly stored in the game data base. As for the last idea.... IF YOU ARE MOVING ITEMS THAT YOU DON'T WANT TO LOOSE, OR ARE EXTREMELY RARE.. FORM A GANG UP YOU IDIOT! or at least be smart about it, I use a falcon.

You have it backwards, you want this sort of activity during a recession to pull your economy out of a slump. Reducing supply in a market already wobbling under the weight of massive inflation only makes prices worth, adding more weight and making it more wobbly.
(ie: Inflation = encourage saving, Recession = encourage spending)

Destruction of items doesn't remove any ISK from the game, and in fact helps inflation along rather than combating it.

Yes it destruction of items does help inflation. Inflation is the sign of a healthy economy.
Lets for 1 minute assume no ships or modules are being destroyed. Suddenly we have a large supply of ships and modules on the market with little or no demand. The price of all ships and modules becomes very low with the exception of some rather rare items which become highly sought after.
Basically the industrial/mining income would dry up while limited number rare items would inflate to ridiculous levels. Leaving only bounties and mission rewards as the only method of making isk. That sounds like a WoW carebear economy to me. If Eve ever turns into that I'll leave. Edited by: Feynmen on 23/03/2007 21:59:12 A game as open ended as EVE is bound to have players that decide to engage in piracy. One of the fun things about that is trying to figure out how not to get yourself killed by them.
Granted, I have been ****ed after losing a ship that took me a week to get the ISK for. But getting mad about it won't change anything. Deal with it.
By the way, I do plan on cashing in on my kill rights if possible.

Although it should only haoppen when the ship is destroyed by a -10 Sec Character. Being a -10 must mean that you are skilled in killing innocent ships full of puppies, orphans, and Tech 2 loot. Thus, you should be skilled in making your hits kill the bridge of the ship without destroying cargo or fitted modules.

do we know what the purpose for this plex loot was? maybe it was never intended to be sold on the market, but instead to be used for an alliance or similar? now, pirates loot this stuff and surely will sell it on the market *increasing* supply of rare mods. just because someone moves around rare stuff doesn't mean he's doing it for the market. --

while some mmorpg's encourage the tireless grinding to get unique items just for the sake of epeen, eve arguably punishes those same people who grind by placing a massive burden of liability upon such expensive loot which can be destroyed or stolen. basically as has been said, the killing of ships, modules and loot rejuvinates the cycle of grinding for isk in a never-ending cycle. if 1 carebear grinds enough for officer mods and a pirate finds him and destroys his ship, the need for more grind arises. if that person quits, someone else will take his place because the money is too good. the pirate and pvper act as agents of inflation control because of this. when the pirate sells the rare mods for ISK it usually goes back into the hands of a carebear who will use it for missions or "pvp for fun" and will most likely die due to inexperience in pvp, or eventually lose them from quitting/node crash/lag. modules are not static and must be grinded (named, officer, faction) or manufactured (t1, t2)
there is a common complaint about the emotional suffering and distress such loss incurs. in real life this is a valid argument against the act of crime, however in eve you must learn this: crime is allowed. the criminal element will always be alive, in 0.0 (alliances, pvp corps) as it is in empire (privateers, wardecs)
there are no courts. the police do not investigate crimes, unless it is an exploit. in high sec the punishment is loss of your ship and lowered sec status if you do not follow the rules. in lowsec it is tankable sentry fire and lowered sec status, which is insignificant, and in 0.0 the only punishment is lowered reputation among local alliances.
if you are a carebear
and you are reading these words,
read this very closely.
there will always be pirates
as long as there are people willing to put in honest labor for isk and equipment, so shall there be the criminal element that seeks to take them away through cunning. this is the everlasting cycle, grinding/thieving. you are either using your time for isk, or you are using your brain. in eve as in real life, the most successful use both. pirates rely on their brain. they learn your weaknesses and exploit them to gather isk. carebears always use their time. they sacrifice it to slowly but steadily gather isk.
which school do belong to?
i hope this has been a refreshing look into piracy, an often misunderstood profession. in real life i know it's different, piracy is discouraged because governments and society prefer peace and order. thus industry flourishes. but even in real life there is crime and piracy, also often misunderstood. the difference is crime and piracy is almost ALWAYS under-represented and downplayed, because local governments do not want to have real-life carebears panic and move to another place with higher security. sound vaguely familiar?
it's up to you. decide who you want to be. i'm pretty sure there is no one on the forums who want to be like that guy, a whining carebear who is crying over his losses. no one wants to be that guy, but many guys end up as him when insufficient judement and cunning is supplied. not everyone wants to be the hardcore pirate either, but a little of both can be good. it's up to you, i hope this has been enlightening. 1. No pirates, cargo gets to where it has to and prices don't get gouged to cover losses. 2. No cargo haulers moving expensive stuff, pirates stop being pirates because no one wants to waste their time pirating mined ore, people move from piracy to privateering/PvE'ing.
Also, I'm not whining about anything, I've not been gatecamping, podded or lost a ship in over a year (more if you include the time I was not in game). I am simplying pointing out a basic fact that many pirates overlook. Everytime they blow up one of their suppliers, their trade gets harder and harder to make a profit on.
You would think they would wise up and do like those privateers; blow up someone elses enemies so ISK.

No need for all this complicated thinking.
In a perfect Bod world
1. See ship 2. Attack ship 3. Ship go BOOM 4. Pod the poor s.o.b 5. Collect loot if any
