Edited by: Sheriff Jones on 06/04/2007 22:09:10 You're all so wrong...most obviously, charon is pronounced like this!
EDIT: By the by, most threads around these parts sound like this too

Originally by: monkeyduck Depends on the source, but the Styx is the most widely known. Read the Divine Comedy and other sources, however, and the Acheron is mentioned. If not the whole thing, Inferno is well worth the read .
Or "Inferno" by Larry Niven & Jerry Pournelle (authors of "The Mote in God's Eye"). A science fiction writer dies, recognizes Dante's Hell, and (being a sci-fi guy) spends most of the story convinced he was cryogenically frozen & then thawed out centuries later in some sadistic theme park. A fun read as well.

Originally by: Ralara It's not Charon like "ch" = chalk or "ch" = cherry
It's pronounced "kair-on", as in "Cher" = Kerr in "Kerry"
Care-on would be a slightly exaggerated version of it. But it's not a soft ch, it's a hard ch. As in Chemistry, Chameleon etc.
Just so you can now resume sleeping at night, and all.
Let me join you on teamspeak and I'll say Skellington and Windowscreen, just to annoy you!
Love Sharon.

It can be pronouced either way. For example, the large moon orbiting pluto is called Charon, prounced with a "Sh" at the front, rather than a K.

Originally by: Vazaha Bule then there's the whole "Gallente" debate to deal with. I've always said Gal-en-tay and my caldari friend has always said Gal-en-tee but we both know what we mean.
I've always been drawn to pronounce Gallente as "Gal-enT", with an "A" as in ant and a "T" as in.....er....ant.
Create a new character and listen to how the tutorial elf pronounces it (you'll have to enable sound though ).

Originally by: Kylar Renpurs I had a similar argument with my friend once about the chinese spelling of Xiau being pronounced 'Sho'. I argued it was actually correct in a sense, but also incorrect due to the nicities of the english language. Somewhere, some numptee academic studied the Chinese language way back when and decided Xiau was the proper spelling of the Chinese, as we'd pronounce 'sho'.
The argument with my friend was basically over why it was spelt Xiau and pronounced 'sho', not 'zeeau'. After lots of quabbling we just agreed to disagree.
Depends on whether it's the old Wade-Giles/Yale transliteration or the newer pinyin.
Also depends on which dialect Xiau is being pronounced in, for example the word 黃 can be rendered as 'wong' from a Cantonese speaker or as 'huang' from a Mandarin speaker.
