I told The Wife about this post and she laughed at me. It turns out Charon is purely a Greek word and the ch is a hard K. The next bit foxed me though, The Wife said the vowels are schwas. Buggered if I know.

On that note i would like to point out that the Cerberus is not pronounced with the S sound greek did not have the soft C
so the Cerberus should be pronounced as Kerberos
fitting that it should sound alot more like CareBear

It's not. I was bothered by that myself seeing as the Caldari tend to name their ships after animals (mythical or otherwise). Seems there's a type of "Tailless Whip Scorpion" called Charon. Seeing as that is a type of animal I suspect somehow the ship is named after that rather then the Greek mythology.

I used to call them caracels, like the merry go round, until someone shouted at me on TS and I looked more closely at the spelling

That's a bit obscure, whereas it being a freighter, and being a ship of the dead / captain / driver / pilot of a ship that ferries things, the mythological one makes more sense to me...

To clarify some things, since im greek and all : Charon in greek is pronounced "Haron" with a hard "H" like in "Hate", but due to latin characters(ironically, characters is a greek word pronounced with the same hard "h")pronounication is different from the greek one. so, it should be pronounced as "Khar-on"... On the other hand, Cerberus is latin for the greek word "Kerveros"(the three headed giant dog that guarded the gates of Hades)and is pronounced "She-rbe-rus". It's all a bit insane tbh, a lot of greek and latin words chage pronounciation to comply with local languages.. i.e. the french would go nuts if they heard how we Greeks pronounce some borrowed french words.. Well, if anyone wants to know how all those ancient-greek named ships should sound, i'll be around..

Also it's Car-on, Why-vern, Kai-mer-a, A-on, Eos (NOT E-O-S) Eh-lith ( ) etc etc etc

To a degree, you're right. But, anyone who is formally taught how to pronounce it will always speak it a certain way. The people who can't be assed to look it up will pronounce it another. I don't know if you code, but this is analogous to the differences between a lazy, self-taught programmer, and one with more rigorous instruction: their programs might do the same thing, can be understood by each other, but the former will probably produce programs with bad formatting, spaghetti and dead code, inefficient methods, etc. Maybe to the end user, it won't matter, but you won't find a professional who says that sloppy coding is okay.
And properness and correctness in spelling and grammar do not always come from popularity. "Whom" is rarely used where it should be. And, as you demonstrate, your and you're are often used incorrectly as well. Dictionaries exist to enforce a standard so we can all refer to it when disagreements like this arise.
Does that make the difference clear?
You can't compare spoken language and programming. I have a dictionary I treasure that is over sixty years old. You would be amazed at the number of words that have been dropped , altered in pronunciation, or added to the language since then.
If you are so inclined you could even check Oxford English Dictionary website (often seen as the yardstick of the english language in britain) and check how many new additions and alterations were made just in the last year.
Since the ancient greeks aren't around to argue the point and ensure the correct pronunciation is present in common usage I doubt the word will remain the same.
After all how many mispronunciations of other words have already been adopted into the english language?

edit ; and as the greek guy somewhere said cerberus is pronounced "tserberus" coz the greek version is something like "kerberos".

Not to throw a spanner in the works or anything, but how do you know the guy who named it was thinking of some mythological character when he named it?
It's a pretty good asumption that he was, but you never know. He might have just liked the sound Charon makes when you say it like it's spelled.
