Well i'm back at uni and totally unable to play eve unless I go find somewhere with a wireless internet connection so I figured i'd amuse myself by coming up with some new ship names. Right now i'm going with a norse mythology theme so I have a drake called fenrir and an old caracal called the mjolnir. Anway what do you name your ships and why?
I have ship names set to show, most people call them by names of bigger ships of that class / use
like some haulers people call obelisk or mini obelisk.
some ive seen call their ships titan hehe poor delusional guys

Just variations of 'm'. Last ships I had were called 'mm', 'mmm' and 'mm' again.
Pretty much cause I can't be bothered. And I don't want to scare off potential people in local, or invite people who think they can take on my ship class (probably because they have a bigger shipclass and can take me on). So mm works quite decently, all neutral n stufz.

My first set of ship names were, for better or worse, pun related:
Merlin - The Happy Pig (see the Blackadder II episode "Beer")
Cormorant - Shagadelic
Moa - Rebel Yell
The Midnight Hour (see Billy Idol song "Rebel Yell")
Ferox - Rusty (as in FERous OXide)
Raven - Starvin' Marvin (cos it was Raven-ous...)
Also used a number of Culture names, including 'Gunboat Diplomat' and 'I Blame Your Mother'. Current Raven is called 'Panzer Hamster' solely because I liked the name

Seeing as I am mainly a tackler for my corp atm I tend not to give my ships names that I will get attached to, as I know they last about 5 minutes normally.
TK-XXX (ie TK-245) for a TacKler
YR-XXX (ie YR-164) for a solo pirate ship (YarR)
Recently I have starting calling my ships things like "Doomed" and "Short-lived" etc.
When I have a ship that I don't intend to lose for a while, it gets a name out of random obscure sci-fi novels I read.

I'm a Caldari Agent working for the Amarr Kingdom (Thats enough RP for me thanks  ). And since they haven't got a new King since the last one died/was assassinated I kept them going on the routes of HMS [Shipname - e.g. Eagle/Pianoforte/Nimble]Ö
I work in the service of the Amarr.. and for the King *salutes*

I name all my Apocs after Metallica songs and Abaddons after Pantera songs. That's just how cool I am.
All my maledictions are called "Nipple" for no good reason other than the fact that I'm not hugely keen on 'ceptors.
Omens and 'Geddons are "Pew Pew" and "PEW PEW" respectively for obvious reasons.
Malers and Prophs are "Hard Nut" and "Tough Nut" though I forget which way round it is.
My Harbinger is "Furio", my Arbitrator is "Beehive" and my Anathema is "Shadow".
My Ashimmu, once fitted, will be "Shimmy". Currently thinking of HAC and Recon names for the near future (Sac = "Very Tough Nut"?)

I started out naming ships by their features. Then I switched to randomly picking quotes out of the show/movie/music I was listening to at the time of buying the ship. Now I name all my ships some varient of Cpt. *pants.

Usually, I find a word or two that I think sounds really cool when you pronounce it. Then i reverse it:
Quantized -> Dezitnauq
Carpe Diem -> Meid Eprac
And so on... It works, actually. You get almost 100% original names that way, though they may not always be easily pronouncable.

All of these are PvP fit:
HAM Nighthawk - Saturation (hecause of HAMs high rate of fire)
AC Sleipnir - Easy Target (because it was, until rigs came out, thanks to slot layout and crap kinetic resist--now it kicks ass)
AC Tempest - Hand of Destruction (the ship I've gotten the most kills with)
AC Maelstrom - Boom Stick (Army of Darkness, anyone? Uber DPS)
Torp Raven - Oath of Vengeance (name of my second battleship, to replace my first one which was lost in PvP back in 2004; have been using it ever since)
Torp CNR - Final Retribution (logical progression from Oath of Vengeance)
Dramiel - Minor Threat
Cynabal - Little Death
Machariel - Doomsday
Phoenix - Destroyer of Worlds (Originally from a Hindu text, quoted by Robert Oppenheimer after his first successful test of the atomic bomb: "Now I am become Death, destroyer of worlds.")
I can't, for the life of me, recall my vagabond's name off the top of my head. :(

I use figures from Greek myths... my Megathron is named 'Pallas Athene', the Myrmidon is (appropriately) named 'Patroklos' and the Thorax 'Diomedes', for example.

It depends on how I feel at the time. One method I have been known to use is to cast my gaze at random around the room and use the first word or two I read. That resulted in, amongst other things, 'Osram Pearl' : a Raven named for a piece of light-bulb packaging, and the ships Lorus I - III : each one a ferox, named for an alarm clock. The numeral indicated the # of times the ship had been salvaged via petition minus 1.

I regularly have ships blow up.. so I used to give them unique names. Now, I just name them after any animal.
I have a Helios named Koala and a Myrmidon "Wombat". I've flown Grasshoppers and Porcupines as well. Any animal.
