Usually just something random that comes to mind at the moment, as to why, the only reason is to make it that much harder for an enemy to know who is in what ship etc.
Example: My 'suicide arbitrator' is called 'Soon to be wreck' and my maledictions are all called 'massive scordite'...
(crap im going to have to change my ship names now!! <puts on tinfiol beanie under hood>)

I pull most of mine from books or on some of my larger ships I use russian naming conventions.
Wolf - Reason (from Snowcrash, it was the name of a gauss-minigun, though it sounded good for a ship that fit so many guns)
Hurricane - Vasili Altfater (Russian battlecruisers usually take the name of famous admirals)
Typhoon - Volya (Russian battleships take the names of concepts, in this case 'freedom')
Rifter - Babylon Rocker (name of a space-tug in Neuromancer)
Probe - Marcus Garvey (the other tug from Neuromancer)
Shuttle - Unarmed Sissy Wagon (Hitchhiker's Guide, from a comment made about a fancy looking ship that was completely unarmed)
Rupture - Gunboat Diplomat (Name of a warship from the Culture series)

when I fly frigets I useally use "little (teeth, claw ect...)" I also use "eagle 5" a bit ( geek points for knowing that one) also had a "lost dreams" a few times.
Mainly I go with a interesting ship sounding name.

All mine are called after Iain Banks' (Scottish sometime science fiction author) Culture ship names.
i.e Quietly Confident, I Blame My Mother, I Blame Your Mother, Ethics Gradient, Grey Area, Steely Glint, Limiting Factor... you get the idea.
Unfortunately due to the limited amount of characters in the ship names things like 'Ultimate Ship The Second' and 'Anticipation of a New Lover's Arrival' won't fit.

Raven = PzKpfw K÷nigsTiger
Ferox = Sturmgeschntz III
Drake = Sturmgeschntz IV
Eagle = PzKpfw V Panther
& etc

I'm gonna name all my ships after Spartan heros...yes I've just seen the movie 300....twice...lol.
I only own 1 ship at this stage:
Megathron = Leonidas
I aim to find out each of the 300 names and then get 300 ships, my big ambition.

I use the names of the Firefly Episodes for my ship, with the exception of Serenity + some other names ships have in common sci-fi movies and books.
Also I stick per ship to the same name (with exception to my rifters).
Mammoth = Nostromo
Hoarder = Ariel
Scyth = Jayne's Town
Wreath = Train Job
Stabber = Trash
...
...
I just wish I had more Episodes to pick names though ...
