I name my ships crazy names, my phoenix got Rise Again, my astarte got Nerf Bat II, my bustard is Shopping Cart of Doom, my crane is Sex in a Can... lol. You can see where this is going...

I never use the same ship names twice, and I keep to the following guideline:
-Gallente ships = French names.
-Caldari ships = English names.
-Matari ships = Norse names.
-Amarr ships = Latin names.
All my 0.0 ships have a ticker for scanner ID. My current Absolution is called [GBC] Dies Irae.

Typhoon = Dont know, I have had it for a long while, and cant think of a good name yet...it will come though.

I generally name my blaster-boats 'Lupara.' My Myrmidon, which will be very cool when I have the isk to fit it properly, is named 'Stobor.'

My Maelstrom is named Crap, even though its a bit unfair since the ship is actually pretty fun to fly in missions.
Then I have a Jaguar thats named "Yarr?" because its in low sec, and someone will probably shoot it down soon.

Back to the OP's question: I name em all Latin:
Domi: Cynocephalus = Babboon in Latin
Myrm: Myrmidonis Extremae (self explanatory)
Iteron: Carpe Diem -> I use my ity to steal from macro miners.
Catalyst: Alia Iacta Est (the dice have been cast, a quote from Caesar: since you never know whats gonna happen to a destroyer.)

Burst - Positive Influence
Slasher - Ride The Wind
Rifter - Casual Interruption
Thrasher - Immersed In Tragedy
Scythe - Mechanical Erosion
Rupture - Direct Use Of Force
Hoarder - Habitual Courtesy
Wolf - Failure of Diplomacy
Cyclone - Ethical Standpoint
Typhoon - Stain The White Snow
And all my shuttles are called Kiss The Sky.

I tend to name my ships after the ones found in R-type final or in a similar style I often use the registration numbers printed on the side of the ship as well (such as in the badger).
Cormorant: R-9D "Eminus"
Badger 2: JJ-74 "Agito"
Drake: R-9K "Sunday Strike"
Caracal: R-9DV "Tears Shower"

I usually name my ships something connected to how they are.
Taranis - Papier Mache Win
Caracal - Fruit Punch
Drake - Fruit Punch mkII
PvP ships usually go under the name of "The Raaawr".
Cormorant - Caldari Salvager I
Haulers are named "Hauler" with a few adjectives.
That's about it.

Pretty much by purpose, with a bit of tongue in cheek:
- Hauler optimized for cargo: Fetch (because i use it mostly for retrieving jetcans)
- Hauler optimized for high risk runs (stabs over expanders): Punch
- Mining ships: Usually either cute and fuzzy names(carebearing), or making fun of their appearance (my Navitas) or in the case of my Burst, Shinobi (because it's excellent for ninja mining)
- My mission ships: Named after the best known carebears (Grumpy bear is my Kessie, Luvalot my Caracal, Wish bear my Drake and my CNR when i get it will be Funshine).
- I still have to think up some appropriate names for my Rifter and any other more PvP oriented ships i might get.
- My Slasher: Gonzales (the one that goes Heeba! Heeba! Andale! Andale! Heeba!).
- My Trasher: Dawg (Because it's purpose it to pick up junk).

I have a raven called Gordon, DRake called Duck
Various thrashers named Gimme gimme (salvaging ship) Mavis.
My cyclones are called Percy and Thomas.
a stabber tho is Stabbed in the leg!
I guess my kids have a lot to answer for!

Well, I call any BC or BS I'm expecting to PVP with Lighthorse Mk whatever. I kind of suck at PVP, and always feel like I should be quoting the "Charge of the Lighthorse Brigade" when I'm going in to PVP ;)
Covops are always Wolfhound
Mission Runners, mining barges, or PVE ships are always Boredom Mk. Something
Any Badger is always Badger, Badger!
Ceptor's are usually a variation on dying soon ;)
