Just before the regular downtime today, we discovered an exploit. Due to this we decided to extend the downtime until the exploit could be fixed, and any damage caused by it be reversed. We were successful in both these goals and Tranquility is now back up and running.
We could not disclose the true nature of the extended downtime, as that might have notified the exploiters. We hope you accept our apologies for the vague announcement, and for any inconvenience this extended downtime may have caused you.

Any chance we could get some information on what the exploit was now that its fixed? Just out of curiosity, of course; it shouldn't matter since it no longer exists.

We only need to know it was fixed, perhaps what it effected would be nice, but us being in the dark is best.

If its your policy not to discuss exploits even after the fact, what happened to the 8/10 Angel complexes?
Or the instant-war trick?
Or putting dreadnoughts on the undock point of a station?
Or using containers as warpin points around gates?
Or bookmark bomb shuttles?
They seem pretty "discussed" to me.
Or are they only allowed to be discussed until they are fixed?

Making it publically known even after it's fixed may only encourage people to find similar problems, or give them ideas of the kind of things to look for.

I am glad CCP is on top of things. Thanks for fixing that vague thing that you cannot mention that people were exploiting. You could have just used the normal "we had hardware issues" and no one would have been the wiser. Instead you rile everyone up about some exploit you won't tell them about, lol.
I dislike that we do not get compensated for all of these inconviences CCP has been causing. I again lost 12 hrs of training time because the system was down, unexpectedly, and I could not log in to start my new skill before heading to work. Now I am sitting here looking at my character sheet, no blinking light, no skill training.
Originally by: CCP Wrangler We hope you accept our apologies for the vague announcement, and for any inconvenience this extended downtime may have caused you.
I am glad CCP is sorry all the time but how does that help me? Make things right when unexpected things happen and reimburse your players for their loss. Saying sorry doesn't help me get back lost training time. How many times will CCP say sorry for an issue or mistake before they make amends to the playerbase?
I don't accept your apology. Nothing personal but I am a customer and you are a business providing a service. How many times as a customer should I just rollover and accept your apology before I get upset and flip out on the forums? Ooh wait, it just happened.

Nice work guys.
Thanks for letting us know why the outage occurred (and it didn't even affect me cause I was working).
On another note - I, personally, cannot think of any reason not to let us know what the exploit was. Seems a sensible thing to do imo.
I've always found that, in reality, eve is not down that much considering the user load it is under.
In general I find it impressive.

No, only that whatever anyone gained was removed, and it didn't involve anyone losing anything.

Although we all trust CCP implicitly with running all aspects of the game and with making certain that everyone plays fairly,
I think the issue with wanting to know what the exploit was falls into the category of many wanting to make certain that neither they, their friends, their corporation, or their alliance was the victim of the exploit and that CCP just happened to miss it in their case.
Not to mention, we are just curious as hell and can't help ourselves, we love deep dark gossip. That's why we play an mmpog anyway.

Ok then, no one, no ones friends, no corporations or alliances were the victim of this exploit. We have had Devs and GMs dealing with this and all consequences of the exploit was reversed.

there was no exploit that is the reason they are not telling us about it.
What really happened is the DEV and GM team all decided to go to the PUB for a few hours. And since they cant leave the server running while no one is there they turned it off.

Let's watch out for those. When it happens, <whatever> == fixed_exploit.

i think this thread deserves an epic - ITS JUST A GAME - and you can go spend time with the family while its down
you guys take some things for granted with your life and with the game if you get mad over an extended downtime
To CCP: i only hope you guys can continue the single persistent server as the subscribers go into the millions it would be a shame for some of the core values of EVE to be broken down...

Thanks for the reply Wrangler, and I do actually feel better. Of course that does not appease my hedonistic desire to know all the little dark secrets. You know, all that inquiring minds bit. Anyway, thanks for finding the problem, for fixing the problem, and for letting us know the truth. It may hurt a bit at first, but things we will get better, and trust will return as long as CCP continues to tell the truth and to follow their policies. All in all, I love the game, otherwise I would not still be around. I also think CCP has done a good job, but us customers always want more.
As for the it's just a game thing, I don't know how much time you spend playing this derned thing, but the it's just a game does not fly.
There are many aspects of the corporate and alliance life I just can't participate in because I do have a life and can not dedicate that kind of game play. Of course that does not stop me from playing when I can or from incurring the wrath of my significant other when she finds out that I'm gonna be tied up for a couple hours online with my alternate life friends.
You get out what you put in, RL or game.

No it is more frustration on the part that it interrupts people's routines, plans, endeavours, etc. I for one have to wait until I get home to start my skill that could have been started this morning before I headed out for the day. You add up these unscheduled DT, or Extended DT, over the course of the month/year, it adds up to a lot of missed training time.

Agreed. This game has a reputation (and rightfully earned) that nothing is an exploit no matter how obvious it is until the devs can be bothered to patch it out or make a statement on it. At the very least it would be nice to know what kind of exploit it was, even if we can't have the specific details. It must have been something really uber for the devs to go through this kind of effort to patch it out. ---- AUS Corp Lead Megalomanic |

Sheer comedy, the Management tell us something bad happened, and that its now fixed, no reason to panic, and with this good news, some people with their sharp intelect and wit decide to rant at the GM's for something so trivial its unbelieveble.
Just take good news for what it is.... good news!

Yes, and the chocolate ration has been increased this week to 20g (even though it was 25g last week). Baseless claims, even from CCP, don't have meaning without something to back them up. ---- AUS Corp Lead Megalomanic |

Not exactly true. Look at the bottom of the patch notes and you will see that exploits were discussed.
Either way, good job on the catch and keep up the good work.

I remember times where we were of a bit more worth for CCP when we did get one day of subscription reimbursed for the bloody long Patches and the days after were everything is screwed up. Just an opinion. Wrangler, that's simply not true.
In the year I've been playing, I've seen several CCP communications about exploits. Generally they have been one sentence summaries, true. But some information (such as "we fixed an exploit that was resulting in extreme profits in the snowball markets") has frequently been provided.
So, is this a new policy? And if not, why not simply say "We're not going to talk about this one" rather than speak of a policy that isn't consistent with game history? ------------------ Ironfleet.com Proposal: Automated Ore Return Vehicles |

Logging off immediately after jumping into a warp disruptor bubble no longer grants invulnerability, much to the delight of gate campers everywhere.

It's from the latest patch notes.
*edit The exploit fixed today was different from these.
Exploits (after being fixed) have been announced many times previously. Either through patch notes (see the patch notes from a couple DAYS ago), random dev posts, stickies on the forums, news items etc.
It's a change in policy to NOT announce them after being fixed.

Those were there before, and are basically the real problem.
CCP's stance on this is neither "full disclosure" nor "security by obscurity". Which leaves us a bit hanging in the air, somewhere between "good information policy" and "ashamed of their code's side effects". An position hard to feel comfortable in. The ends of the scale are much easier to arrange oneself with.

There's usually two types of exploits in games like EVE. One where it's a cheesy thing to do, but is kinda rare and doesn't really affect people for the most part. Those are the kinds of exploits you see fixed in the patch notes.
The other kind of exploit is the kind which could cripple a game in a matter of hours. Usually this is like duping or some obscenely large amount of gain for no effort. I've seen plenty of games where this kind of thing happens and BAM down go the servers and you never find out what it was that was happening. You are never told so you don't get ideas about ways to do that kind of thing again.
I'm guessing this mornings fun was a big enough game breaking thing that they had to shut down the servers. My ISK is on a fedo revolt! The poor buggers were eating their way through ship hulls and crews were doomed. But we'll never know.
If you're gonna be angry at anyone, don't be angry at CCP, be angry at the morons that tried to exploit whatever it was enough to force an emergency shutdown like that. |

Just wanted to thank you for this snippet, as this sort of thing can be very important to people. People generally like more specific assurances than a simple "it's fixed" because "it's fixed" doesn't really answer the question of "did this in any way affect me". ---

Basically, the reason I want to know about exploits is fourfold:
- I may have seen someone using that exploit (especially when logs for it are inconclusive), which would help you catch the exploiters, or have seen a variant on it, which you may not have spotted in your logs.
- If all of a sudden I now have a warning on my account for doing something I didn't realize was an exploit (an alliancemate who accidentally bought from escrow when you could go negative by doing so comes to mind; he went negative and then immediately transferred isk over from an alt to cover it, but got the banhammer for a week or two anyway), I'd like to know about it, so I can contest it if necessary, or at the very least not attempt to do it again!
- As a former QA professional, I love to see how systems break. With the combination of (Stackless) Python, C, ASP, and SQL underlying this game (and I wouldn't be surprised to find some Perl or LISP hidden in some deep, dark corners), the potential for delightfully-subtle interactions makes me drool. You guys get to test some SERIOUSLY complex software!
- If I can come up with a variant on that exploit, I can hop on the test server and identify and bugreport it before the exploiters (who now have little to lose, and know EXACTLY what the exploit is, after all!) can come up with it first.

Become part of the bug trackers, I have no doubt once they can protect their collective exausts, you will be let in the loop.
If you have past experience, your exactly the type of person that should be helping find bugs, besides you might end up with a nice job ( past bug hunters, and ISDA (sp ) personal have been offered jobs ) :-)

I have to agree with reasons 1, 2, and 4. I am not a former QA pro, so I can't agree with 3 per se... But anyways, I am the kind of person who loves to find bugs and exploits so I can report them. It really aggravates me when I find someone cheating in a game I thoroughly enjoy playing by the rules. I also like to know about them so I know whether or not it is something I accidentally did, like using 6 salvagers simultaneously on one wreck to reap massive salvage due to a loot table glitch or something... Anyways, glad it's fixed, whatever it was, and keep up the good work.

Wow. First people complain about this game being too buggy, then when CCP fixes a bug the people don't even know about the people complain that they lost an extra hour or so ingame time and/or that CCP is cheating them. I have forgiven CCP for any past incidents and until proven guilty they are innocent again in my book.
CCP: Thank you for doing your best to give me a fun and bug-free gaming experience. I am enjoying playing your game, and hope to have the RL money to have all 3 of my accounts active at once soon!
Oh, and thank any devs that may have gotten woken up to do work on the servers. I especially appreciate the dedication of CCP employees that do stuff like that for us.

Gratz for fixing the exploit but anoucing it and then saying it's a secret . That is the perfect way to get on the comunity nerves.
We don't care if Jim Bob got 70 gazilions isk and SP or Mary Jane got 900 titans and blew up 50% of the stations in EVE .
I'll tell you 1 thing to us veterans there's nothing that ****es us off more then : Stealth Nerf & Boosts . But publicly anoucnig a secret fix it just .... silly .
Even thou some of the EVE members are very young 13 years or so. I think that 98% of the EVE comunity will understand that.
And don't forget this : Those who are willing to give up a little freedom to gain a little security will gain neither and lose both.

Guys, the reason they don't tell you what the exploit was even after it is fixed is because after every patch people will keep trying the exploit to see if it is back again or not! And telling details would prompt the scum of eve who do exploit to try other ways to do it or let them know areas of the game mechanic that are potentially exploitable and they could dig another one up. Can't you all just understand that simple fact?
As for who did it, I really don't care. CCP say they took care of them, thats good enough for me. I believe them. You think they are lying? If so you know where the cancle button is. We all don't need to hear your paranoid ramblings and susspicions. If they were covering something up to protect someone that works against our interest as the general player base do you think Wrangler would even mention that it was due to an exploit and not elaborate further, sparking your paranoia? No, he would just have said 'hardware failure' and babbled something technicall and generic.
No go back to your tinfoil people. ------

That's why there's a public-access test server. CCP can't stress the game the same way that a couple hundred players on the test server can, and can't come up with the same sorts of potential exploits that someone approaching the game from a black-box perspective can. I know I always try to make it a point to test out a couple of the past exploits (like accepting a contract/escrow for more than you have in your wallet, to name one public example). Haven't found a regression yet, though.

The EULA you agreed to covers unexpected downtimes, so lets take a break on complaining about the nickels worth of training time you wasted.
Oh, and some wandering muppet on page two (I believe) stated he didn't go into 0.0 because it was proven it was rigged... ... well, all I can really say is you are a very confused person.

Untill now, no exploits were suggested by the players ... so to taunt the GM's,
here's one possible reason for the downtime:
All Salvage Drone Operation skill books were removed from the contracts, and from the players who learned the skill... Could this skill have had a possible negative side effect with other unintended modules of the game, other then salvage drones that aren't really in the game yet? *snip* - Image not appropriate for eve-o forums - hutch

I doubt the skill had anything to do with an exploit.
