I never really noticed how bad it was until I got my carrier, but I definitely agree that there could be serious improvement with the drone UI. An option to simply orbit an object is essential for fighters and it can be hard to get them to attack a target when there's a lot of lag using the menus. I really like the UI suggestions that were linked to earlier.

Oh and for pirating drones are almost useless as well. You cant gate gank with drone boats, drones get slaughtered before you even let em shoot at target.

Drones should be usable like guns, ie when you make a dronegroup you should be able to associate this dronegroup with a button which you could place in the F1-F8 style hotkeys. Drones should be able to be added by dragging them to the buttons.

At least they did mention in path notes that they done at least something to drone issues:
Quote:
- Fighters and Drones will now use their MWD to return to the ship correctly.
- Fighters will correctly follow the carrier into and through warp.
- When delegating fighters, the drone UI will now automatically resize.
- When jumping out of a system where you had fighters assigned to you, the drone UI will now auto update to reflect that you no longer have your wingmen.
- Work has been done to reduce the lag effects experienced when issuing commands to drones using the UI. Also, launching/retrieving drones should not suffer from as much lag now.
- Fighters engaging Starbase structures will now follow their controller into warp rather than staying and continuing to fight. Note, they will stay and fight until ordered otherwise.
If lag really was solved, then I hope they keep up good work.

I just read that whole eve chronical story thing on camera drones.
AFAIK, warfare items are always top of the heap as far as functioning, so why can I pilot my camera drone as fast as my vid card can take me, but I need 3-4 commands sent to my combat drones to recall them?
I'm glad I didn't start as a Gallente, as drones are nothing more than a few extra 'dumb' dps based on current issues.

Yes please modify the drone UI. It chews up half the overview if you have drones. It's sad the way it's implemented now. On top of that your drone health is not updated well at all.
Many of the suggestions in this thread are awesome. Drone UI hasn't been touched in eons. Please bring it on par with the rest of combat.
