I was already folding under another name on another team but I figured why not run it for eve. Your signature exceeds the maximum allowed dimensions of 400x120 pixels and filesize of 24000 bytes -Sahwoolo Etoophie |

I just got a Ps3 at the weekend, and this is one of the things it will run "out of the box".
The thing is, by helping this, I'm contributing to global warming by leaving the PS3 on!
Can't win really!

it's good to be concerned about wasting electricity. there has been a moral quandary related to F@H and the PS3. if you really, really want to do F@H but can't ease your conscious, you might consider figuring out how much energy is used by a PS3 running F@H. someone who is good at physics could help you account for the heat given off and how that affects your cooling bill.
my personal opinion on the matter is that it requires less effort to conserve larger amounts of energy than smaller amounts by reducing usage of cars, refrigerators, air conditioners and any other large appliance. the problem is all those things make life so nice and comfortable that it is hard to give them up :p

Seti@home is still running, too - the payoff if this works is huge, of course.
On the subject of global warming and distributed computing; there is a totally separate (not BOINC) project on climate simulation running at the moment - sorry, but I don't have the IRL handy right now. The purpose of this study is to find out whether global warming is a problem or not by simulation before we do the experiment for real - so you can help contribute real science to the debate.
The only trouble with this one is that you need a reliable PC and lots of time. Work units in this project take weeks, and the program only saves data every 45 minutes or so - so if your box crashes every ten minutes don't bother. ---------------------------------------------- "Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent."

It appears that there are security patches that you two have not applied.
I'm running seti@home atm, I'll probably start doing some folding aswell in a few weeks (I used to run the folding stuff a while ago but stopped when it got boinced iirc).

I used to run seti a couple of years ago. And actually got into the top 1000 in the uk. But it all changed and my account wouldn't upgrade to bionic. Also i figured if we actually found something we would either be blown up or have all our resources sucked up.

Edited by: Khnaedra D''Val on 18/07/2007 12:48:09 System is completely up-to-date, with all the latest security patches......I'm just using an OS that doesn't require you to reboot your system every time you move the mouse (ie. not Windows)!
Oh, and EvE-team joined, first workunit is about 50% complete......will see how my system copes with this.

It uses spare CPU-time to process information within a protein-strand "work-unit", downloaded from the repository, in order to research diseases, with a view to finding a potential cure or ways to treat them...

Starting an EVE folding team is a great idea. I've been folding since version 1 and I'm currently with the [H]ardOCP team, but I'll switch my machines over to support this new team. The EVE community is a huge group of people with computers that could do a lot of good research for the Pande group.
In other words, consider me in, and let's see if we can get more EvE players involved.

Good to see some more people found the way to FAH. Been at it for almost two years now with my trusty 3000+ Venice. Please read the information on their site carefully before joining the project. Only join in if you're really serious about it, otherwise you might just slow things down instead of speeding it up.
For those of you who are bothered with the extra heat that is produced: switch of your airconditioning and open a window, ffs. Much healthier as well. Sweating never hurt anyone. (Buying a car with an engine that's smaller than 2 litres will also help saving the environment, if you're so concerned. As long as it isn't a Prius. That's just nice for your wallet) ---------- I made a bet for 100M and a faction fitted Raven that I wouldn't get any dev/admin change to my signature even when I specifically ask not to. So please, think of my poor wallet! |

For those as reading deficient as I, not only is there a gpu client (if you are running a 1800 ati etc- sadly, g80 nvidia cards are bugged), there is also a SMP as client as well. Naturally, the smp client is best on quad cores and sucks a few more resources than the standard client. But hey, it's for science, right?
Fold.
