I like EVE a lot better (SUPERIOR game and players) . . . but this line of argument doesn't stand.
WoW has 25 servers whose names start with the letter "A" alone. Not even gonna try to count them all, but you can check their realm status page.

It's more difficult than you think.
There are few high volume, high availability systems that support even 10% of the simultaneous users that Eve supports. The transaction volume also has to be extremely high.
Software and its underlying hardware is not as simple as some of you imagine - otherwise, you would all be out there, making money as software architecture gurus with equally impressive systems in your experience.
I'm surprised there isn't a whole day down every week, for scheduled maintenance and testing of deployed features (test servers are never the same as the production servers).
Stop your whining. I consider it a miracle that we get to play as often as we do.

Try 5,000 per server. That's the limit. They DO have 8 million subscribers, but not ALL of them play at the same time OR come from the same country, so they don't play on the same ones. ---

Well, I say the argument stands better than your "outside the wrong ballpark numbers"...
WoW is about 5-6 million players in EU/US combined (as far as one can tell), but they have about 440-450 shards (just over 220 in EU/US respectively). So if we take the rough numbers of 6mill/400 shards thats 15k (overestimated numbers as you can see, but a factor 10 lower than yours) people per shard. EVE also distributes load over "shards" (nodes) in a way, but the big difference is the huge database behind it. EVE has "one" (probably many, but all interconnected and available to the whole population at the same time). Even with 10 chars per account and assuming that players have all their chars on one server, the size of their databases are "toys" compared to EVEs as they are isolated for each shard, there are caps on items (bank, bags, inventory), there is no market and transaction history etc. etc. So pretty different from a computing technology standpoint IMHO.

If CCP really wants to make up for the atrocious service and problems and show some good faith to their faithful user base by upping 1 loaded skill of the users choice to level 5, that will more than make up for the constant downtime and problems, people are losing skill time, ships, money and most importantly the enjoyment of the game. I feel that will, especially since it can be any one skill that has been loaded, make up for all of the above mentioned. Just a thought, but what are the chances, CCP is just happy taking money and overlooking the problems that has arisen long before now. Never ignore a new type of server crash, it always comes back. |

Tranquility is now open for business, again.
Remember that the server can be a bit slow after startup due to a lot of people trying to get in at the same time, so be careful the first 10-15 minutes.

They already give ya at least one level 5. You can even choose which one! ... They could start you off at a station with and Frigate 1, a newbie ship and a civilian gun, ya know. |

The server team will continue to monitor TQ for any other issues that may arise throughout the course of the evening, as well as continuing to delve deeper into the hardware issues with all resources at our disposal. This most recent reboot looks promising, more so than previous reboots.
Again, we apologize for the inconvenience the recent server issues have caused the EVE community.

If you'd done this initially it would have come up half an hour early.

The thing about the way EVE cuts up the workload is that it's not very good.
For example, Jita gets lagged to hell when you get 600-800 people in it. Counting people in stations. And when you're in a station in Jita, a lot of things lag to hell for you - things as simple as moving items from the station hanger to your ship cargo bay.
One should have nothing to do with the other. There's no reason that someone in a station in Jita should be on the same node as someone in space in Jita. Once you're in a station, put that user on the least-worked node available.
Along similar lines, the next thing that should be done in the whole 'need for speed' initiative is allowing people in different grids to be on different nodes. _____ Lifewire is a big, ugly, mean... carebear. |

Originally by: Rhaegor Stormborn I know is a crazy thing to think, but I might be causing the server to crash. I know that is nuts. The server has crashed at 3 or 4 times today at the exact same point in the mission I am trying to do. It is Angel Extravaganza, right when the last boss spawns, before the bonus room, his two spider drones appear with him and start going 5000m/s towards me and then the server starts to lag, and eventually crashes. Maybe it has nothing to do with it, but 3 (or 4?) times in one day at the exact same point in the same mission this has happened. I most likely have nothing to do with it and it is just a freaky coincidence, but I had to say something.
I keep getting to run the mission over and over again which is kind of nice because I make like 15 million each time plus loot and salavage.
I been wondering the same thing. Guriast Extravagansa here and game has crashed between the first and second room.
I'm wondering if it's the missions in general... during both lvl 4 missions i have tried to do tonight the server has crashed on either the next stage spawn (2-spawn mission) or gone down during the penultimate spawns of the current lvl 4 mission i was doing -stranding my ship in the middle of being attacked by the level bosses

But I do. I set a longish one training yesterday evening, and it finishes in 3 and a half hours. But I haven't been able to login since yesterday evening to put a longer one on. Maybe before the next patch I should cancel my account for a month and set a really long skill.

As soon as I saw the first traffic advisory i switched to a 1 day skill :) I learned the last time!
On a side note, I've been playing since sunday night. This is not looking good. Hopefully this gets fixed. No way am I going to pay for a game that is this inconsistant. I do know this is a recent problem not an on going one from people I've talked to about this stuff.

I'm 42 years old and an old salty IT director with a lot of system design, deployment, and programming in my background (Like 20 years worth).
Here's the advice:
Take the cluster offline... for a day.... or two... and find out what the hell is going wrong.
Two things will happen:
1. Your users will whine at first, but when you fix it you'll be a hero.
2. You will anger fewer users by announcing a plan.
However, if the systems in question have to be running under load to be debugged- then we are all screwed.
But with this many failures- I would not risk the corruption of such a large database. And MSSQL can *really* get fuxored up by repeated reboots after failures.
That's my opinion- but it's your business.
CCP, please follow this guy's advice!
