Then when i go for bio breaks, ill move it to the back of the ship ;)

Reasonably priced is the key issue here. I dont want to pay like games-workshop prices for a plastic miniature of an Eve ship.
But yeah, its been talked about before. I think we all would buy model kits for Eve ships.

Being a modeler myself (WW2 navy ships, mainly japanese), I would like them to be both, decent quality and affordable. Cheap junk from Revell or Matchbox (even though I find Matchbox to be okish) is just as bad as unaffordable resin kits. About Tamiya quality would be perfect imho. Good kits, but still relatively friendly on wallets.
Of course I don't even know what kind of 'models' we are talking about here, seems people have very different conceptions, like figurinesque complete metal thingies (not for me) or plastic kits that have to be assembled (thats what I want).
There is no 'n' in turret There is no 'r' in faction There is no 'a' in Scorpion There is no 'e' in Caldari There is no makeup in rogue drones |

They wouldn't have to be fancy. Injection-molded plastic would be fine as long as the detail and color were good.

Probably, it'd be more likely if it was something I got to assemble myself rather than a pre-assembled and painted model. Either way, I'd prefer higher price for better quality. As far as I'm concerned there's no 'reasonable' price when what you're getting is cheap junk, it's better to shell out what you have to to get something done right.

Personally, I would like to see CCP maybe have a vote on a test model. Whichever ship people vote for, CCP produce a number of units and see how well they sell. Obviously using the new ship models from DX10 instead of the current client and a complete finished unit.
I for one would endeavour to purchase every single ship from the game, and im sure there are plenty of people out there who would follow suit.
Can we maybe get a response from someone official? Is this likely to ever happen?

Edited by: Plutoinum on 12/09/2007 04:24:05 Probably they would be too expensive for me to buy that stuff and somehow the idea of filling my room with that feels a bit nerdy.
But well, if I think about a detailed tempest model, I'd buy it, because that the ship I've been flying most. And then probably my minmatar love would fully come out and I'd make a collection. I'd even want something like a Probe ( which has been my beloved looting frig before salvaging and mini-hauler for years. Think the first ship BPO I bought was a Probe BPO )

Would they be the type of models that you build yourself or more like toys? I think I'd prefer the former because that would probably mean more detail. -------------------------------------------------------- Working towards my own personal Dreadnought, one ISK at a time. |

Yes
Wolf, Cynabal and Claw would be my first choice of purchase. I would prefer them made from pewter and not painted. As for haveing them in scale to each other, I think that would be near impossible.
I think there would need to be a standard size for the ship types. Frigates = 5cm (ú20 to ú23) Cruisers = 10cm (ú30 to ú35) Battleships = 20cm (ú50 to ú60)
so a scale is represented, just not a true scale.

Woot! A topic I know something about for a change.
I was in the business of aircraft/space model creation, marketing and sales for a few years. We did everything from cheap plastic models ranging from $20 to hand carved executive wood models selling for up to $400.
I have a whole wall of die-cast aluminum warbirds and historical aircraft models. The nice die-cast ones sell for around $80 - $200.
A lot of these come from the Franklin Mint which generally does good work.
CCP should look into this as it's quite easy and very profitable.
Put me down for a hurricane minimum.

I think last time this topic came up, it was found to be too expensive for the manufacturer to invest in the 3d design and the mouldings of the self-assembly ship kits to charge the customer any kind of reasonable price for them. The models would be a fairly small production run, which would give them less of a chance to make the initial investment back. Pity.

There
I would be happy with either heh. The plastic model kits I could customize & make frickin awesome, but i'd have to worry about screwing something up or not being "good enough". The prepainted die-cast would have all the glory & detail of the originals though, as well as wieghty "giving it a certain grandness over cheap plastic".
There would just be 1 REALLY cool thing about it either way though. I could say "Some people like to hang toy airplanes from the cieling if their room. I like to hang toy warships ." ___________

And a Machariel.
but they'd better be reasonably sized, 25 cms for a brutix seems a good size, would make my massive Hyperion something like 75 cms :D

And a nice trick from my war-gaming days 50/50 mix of PVA Glue and water brushed all over will give your models a resin-like durability and feel. Of course some paint is required after a step like that!
My current lack of a colour printer is all that has stopped me from trying this myself... Although it occurs to me I *could* take it down the local print shop :)

If they were nice sized, had a good construction, and were at a reasonable price I would at least consider it.
perhaps someone like games workshop could use their forgeworld guys to make some of these. i mean, some of the resin stuff they've produced is incretibly detailed, and hey, they're not entirely opposed to working with other people's franchises - they made alot of lord of the rings models for their tabletop game version of the movies (i know they're books, but the movies provided the visual guide). ========================================== Iy

Originally by: Jon Hawkes I think last time this topic came up, it was found to be too expensive for the manufacturer to invest in the 3d design and the mouldings of the self-assembly ship kits to charge the customer any kind of reasonable price for them. The models would be a fairly small production run, which would give them less of a chance to make the initial investment back. Pity.
Production run sizes have fallen dramatically in the last couple of years with computer control. Go down to your local toy store and check the extremely limited issue models you can get. I think with a customer base the size CCP has you could definitely make a profit.

A model drake would sit so nice up by my other models. I would even be happy with something akin to the larger hasbro titanium series models. Something like this would probably be on the lower end of what I'd want but it's still a moderate balance of quality versus price(though probably getting towards the lower end of the curve...)

As a general note to those who are contemplating actual production and arguing one method or another...
Technology now allows people to make 3d models (usually with rhino) that can be fed into a 3d prototyper to make actual metal models. This is rapidly becoming the norm for "technological" models like ships, cars, etc since they can be more effectively done this way. Biological models, like for people, animals, plants, etc are usually sculpted in the traditional manner.
At the current time, with 3d prototyping, you can get detail as precise as .4mm or so. No idea what that is in imperial, but it's bloody smalll irregardless.
The prototype model is generated, and used to make a silver master model. This model is visually inspected and perfected. From this model master molds are made, which then are used to make the production masters. The production masters are then used to make the production molds. (why is this kind of matroshka doll madness done? it saves wear and tear on the most expensive portions of the proccess, IE the Silver master and the initial prototyping.)
Altogether, the costs to have this done can run you up to about 10,000 USD for a single model of about two inches in length by about 1/2 by 1/2 inch, from modelling to production (not including cost of actually putting them into production. That's just setup costs). That's for a one-piece model like a Thorax. Multi-piece models (probably a Megathron, just about all the caldari ships) would cost more for modelling becuase the model has to be broken into several pieces to make molding even possible.
As for plastic, uhh... don't. CCP, don't go with plastic. Games Workshop does this because they can afford the initial startup costs. Plastic molds (just the molds, nevermind the additional labor going into designing and prototyping) can easily run past 100,000 USD. The tradeoff is that with plastic, the models are literally 1/10th the cost of a metal model to produce, and the molds last marginally longer.
As for casting houses, in my experience (which is marginal directly, but I have a somewhat close pipe to the miniature game industry here in the US) Reaper is the outfit you want to go with. I know of several companies who contract their production with them, they seem to have excellent service and quality control. I don't know who to recommend for silver masters, but I understand there's a place in Texas that does good work. That's where I've heard our stuff goes.

I definitely would buy some. Probably each of those I fly in the game. I just hope they stay away from GamesWorkShop. Their models are way too clunky (for lack of a better word) ... ugly maybe ... compared to creations from Rackham or AsmodTe.
So, a titan's not only gonna cost ya umpteenth billions but also about $600.- if in scale compared to your 1 inch frigate .. which is probably gonna be around $8-$10.- Battle ships around $40.-
Miniatures is not a game ... it's a hobby, and an expensive one on top.
