lmao these posts ***** me up, guess nobody here ever played Asherons Call in the day, and remember the 14 day downtime patch deployment eh?
Yet his post is topped only in the ******ation scale by yours. What in the name of God does Asherons Call have to do with EvE?
Are you actually suggesting that just because some other MMO years ago had a problem that it should be accepted here and constantly interrupted service should be the industry norm?
That is like saying that it is okay that the doors to my Cadilliac fall off every day because back in 1977, the same thing happened to someone else's Pinto.
I suggest training Reading Comprehension up another level.

This sentence is wrong is many ways.
1. Eve uses SQL Server not MySQL. 2. MySQL is not an MS product. 3. MySQL, even on Windows, is a very stable platform. 4. SQL Server is also a stable platform.
If you meant to say uninstall MS SQL Server and use MySql on Linux then that would be a debate worth having. But you didn't.

I cannot play Eve-Online.
I haven't been able to play Eve-Online for months. Every single engagement that's involved double figure (double, not tripple) ships has resulted in a node crash or full server crash. We are unable to play the game we want to play and this has been the case for several months. To make it worse, one of my corp mates is in 'GM Queue Hell' after losing a BS during an attack on a POS when the node suffered difficulties and we were unable to log back in. To make it worse 2 other corp mates have had their ships reimbursed yet the remainder is being firmly told that there was no server problems detected in the logs. As even an 8 year old can imagine, this doesn't exactly inspire confidence. I'm being nice and trying to control my language, but after several months of this it's becoming increasingly hard to put up with. Yes, we all love CCP and you guys surely do deserve some slack while you locate and fix the problems. However that time is passing, it's been a while now and no-one in my corp has had a satisfying fight for some time as the inevitable result of any attempt to do so is some form of crash. It's not like we're fielding triple figure ships either, it's usually between 10-40 ships including enemies I've no idea how full scale fleet fights are able to happen at all, but then even the recent tournament had my jaw hitting the floor trying to puzzle why no-one is afflicted with problems the way we have been. I've even had the joy of witnessing a corp mate desynch during a 1vs1.
It's been months, time is running out as the game simply isn't playable as it is - best of luck finding the problem causing it CCP and hopefully very soon.
PS. Little point anyone asking for my stuff as the ensuing database transactions would no doubt crash the server.

Server Crash Bingo!
So, the server crashed. While we wait, as a means of putting off the boredom, download the Server Crash Bingo cards.
Rules: Every time someone in the "official" thread (the one that gets stickied) says something in one of the positions, or substantially similar (enough that it's reasonably close) cover a spot.
When you get 5 in a row, in any direction, you get to claim a bingo.

Please, CPP, pretty please consider moving to an industry grade database, like Oracle. I hope for you that you have a persistence middleware which is creating the SQL statements for you, otherwise you will always be locked into this mess.
Today our engineering found out the hard way, that the timestamp column type in MS-SQL has a variance of up to two milliseconds. I.e. 2007-09-12 12:00:00.000 and 2007-09-12 12:00:00.001 are the same timestamps for MS-SQL. Just brilliant.

I've run win2k several months between reboots on various computers at home and work. They would have kept running too but they needed to come down at various times for various reasons (patches, defrag, HW replacement etc.)
Some have ran win2k over a year.
Anyway, back to your regularly unscheduled downtime!

CCP keep the good work. The stupid bug is somewhere well hidden deep :/ (as always).
I'm impressed that there are people in the middle of the night there debugging and trying to find the issues. Usualy on all other MMORPGs isn't anyone around and have to wait for the office to open in the morning :D
To the whinners :
Get a life. EVE is HUGE game compared with ANY other game around. A database to support 200,000+ users (30k online) will have issues. Software without bugs is a MYTH. If we combine the above with the server being is a cluster of hundred of different machines it doesn't take a lot to have a bomb.
It's a miracle we have EVE running as is.

As someone who works in this kind of stuff every day, with concurrent problems and 'whining' from my customers, I have to tell you that reliance on intervention by metaphysical abstract homocentric concepts is not something that we consider very often.
Incidentally, we don't tend to call the complaints from customers 'whining', because they have this, I dunno, 'valid' concern that they're paying money for something that isn't available. When you contract to large manufacturing, you tend to pay penalty for the amount of time that a line is down for for lost earnings. Likewise making the excuse that this is 'just a game' trivialises the amount of recreational time invested by people.

No, it's ambitious. It's also extremely proud of the fact that it's single shard and can handle a large number of concurrent users. Except it can't, not always. The problem is getting worse, not better, and the whole 'need for speed' has been diluted by throwing hardware at a problem that could be in the software/hardware/OS layers. We're being told that they're looking for the problem, but with no real resolution. On top of this, the database strain has been mitigated a number of times by introducing the API and deferred updates to certain tables.
If the software is not up to the strain, then that needs to be fixed. If the hardware isn't up to the strain, then that needs to be fixed. That's what engineers do, we fix things. We don't cross our fingers and pray. Well, mostly not.

I'm an IT consultant. This is my life. :P
Look, I appreciate the effort that CCP put into this, especially from the guys at the lower end of the pay scale. I've been there at 3am watching the bootstrap come up and hoping that it'll work this time around, but in my second decade of doing this stuff I've come to appreciate the value, to my sanity if nothing else, of taking a step back and carefully following a problem through to it's conclusion, and also putting measures in place to mitigate such problems. That's why backups and UPS' exist, even if the entire industry is cutting corners on such things.

I have a couple of DBs with over a million users and quite a bit more than 30k online, but nothing like the sheer transactional bandwidth. This is going to be the problem.

Edited by: Lazuran on 12/09/2007 17:11:40 Wow this subject can be re-used. ;-)
So, what's going on again? Borked patch, eh? But it might really help to monitor TQ more closely, it can't be that there's absolutely nothing you can do to prevent it from crashing when you see strange lag appearing etc. ...
isn't it funny how some people advocate both GTC<=>ISK trades and EVE being superior due to its cruelty and costly losses, when they use the former to circumvent the latter?
