Originally by: Na'omi Chin'Hwa Guys, be patient. running servers is not exactly an easy thing to do especially when you have quite a few. In the IT world sometimes things happen that is not evident what the problem may be and can take quite a while to fix. I won't say i'm an expert with servers but i do have quite a bit of experience in a large networking environment and voip technology and certain issues no matter the experience level you have is just gonna make you pull your hair out. Try tracking down a network issue with over 250 different sites spreadout through one of largest counties in the states with over 10,000 cisco switches and near 5000 wireless devices. You'd be surprised how long in hind sight a simple issue takes to fix sometimes.
As another troubleshooter "professional" in this business I can only concur. Take ths post by Silack totally irrelevant/unjust whine/flame - IMHO.
A "quick" reboot might get us up now, but they'd probably loose some good diagnostic info. "Reading the logs" is probably the only way to locate the mismatch between what the application wants the DB to do, and what the DB actually does do. Of course, this assumes that the vital bit of info is logged .. but it might not be. So you patch, include more logging (which slows things down a little) and hope you find it next time it crashes. SO we're gonne see one or two more until we see the triumpant message that they've found it.

At least with charding...if one shard has an issue they can mover players over to the other chards and the game wont lag, crash or anything else, unlike what happens on eve.
Why have such complex programming that isnt realy understood by the engineers, especially if there are major issue with it. I think it is false ecommy dont you!

Now as for who owes who money.... CCP says their daily downtime is 1 hour. Usually it's only like 1/2 that, but lets say 45 minutes to take the odd longer ones into account. That means that CCP is giving you 15 minutes of EXTRA gametime per day, which equals ~91 hours per year. Now, downtime caused by crashes are FULLY covered by the EULA that you sign up to so you have no reason to complain there, so in essence, you owe CCP just below 4 days extra subscription per year.
Otoh, we could also take the alternate look, that CCP will be happy to pay you money back. For each 24 hour extra downtime due to bugs/crashes, they'll refund you 1/30 of one months subscription. You'll of.c. have to pay the costs of the return, which will be Ç19.95
Third option, you could stop being a small-minded, whining, penny-pinching fgt...
I don't care that the daily DT takes less time. I rather have them use up the full hour of PLANNED DT, than have fu**ing crashes, causing unplanned DT.
Thats is what HA is all about? isn't it ? 99.999% availablily.... this means to reach this figure, you can afford yourself 5 minutes of unplanned DT per YEAR !!!! We are looking at day's of unplanned DT per day !!!!
Maybe it's time to reconsider your choises of hardware and software platforms, as what you have deployed now can clearly not cope with the task at hands.
And its definitely not the first time we are experiences issue's like this, its been going on in waves since the deployment of Revelations 2 !!!!

That isnt entirely true and if CCP carry on with their apparently lacklustre approach to quality control and customer relations there is a real danger that customers will go elsewhere for their online recreation.

So how many days have you been playing Eve? Maybe since the tournament started, right?

Agreed. I'm in the business too.
Though this has been going on since 2004 when I first started playing. And quite frankly it is getting very old.

QFT! Think about how often you actually see another ship when not in a gang or at a station/gate. HRMS - Never?
So separate the 30k players into 15k, hm - probably won't even see those people you never see stretching into the stations and gates.

Great idea... you're aware of the fact, that with most sharded MMORPGs your character only exists on one of the shards? Rather than flying around with an Ibis and 800k SP on another shard while "my" shard went **** up I'll do something more productive... reading the forums, for example. ______

The customer isn't always right, but the customer is always the customer.
Fanboys are a wonderful tool, they are around on just about any forum about any game, interpreting each and every bug as a feature, every failure as a vritue, and basically make someone reading the thread for the first time actually believe them. Smartest thing is not to argue with them, you can't win mate.

CCP says their daily downtime is 1 hour. Usually it's only like 1/2 that,
2 things are obvious here 1) you dont play during the week, only at weekends when server downtime is usually shorter OR 2) you are wrong and have no idea what you are talking about. For the sake of argument, the answer is actually 2. During the week the server DT is usually, though not always, 10-15 minutes OVER the alotted 1 hour, so that means.....
Quote: That means that CCP is giving you 15 minutes of EXTRA gametime per day, which equals ~91 hours per year.
Change 'giving' to 'taking' and you will be more accurate. So by your mathematics I am owed 91 hours game time per year I play. Thanks!
Quote: so in essence, you owe CCP just below 4 days extra subscription per year.
Change 'you owe' to 'they owe' and your post will have been the most inciteful post today.. well done you!

Tranquility is now up and open for business, we have been logging a lot more than we would usually and the logs are being investigated. Hopefully this means we'll get a solution to these issues.

Ohohoh, the joy! Let me see, skills are running on both accounts, good. Watching a movie that will last another hour, good. Too bad this wasnt the case yesterday, nor the day before....
Thing is, it will not get any better any time soon. Eve is build on ancient/obsolete/yesteryear code, and there is no room AT ALL to make any change to this that will make it work better other than completly re-writing the base. All they can do, and this is what they have been doing for ages now, is try and smooth out whatever they build on top of it. It's like sticking band-aids on it.
Yeh, this game is testing my patience right now...

To CCP: While the community in general have been patient and accepting of issues, which in any complex system are expected from time to time, these issues are now becoming beyond a minor annoyance to a major PITA. Would CCP consider any form of compensation for lost time? Personally one or two unplanned outages aren't cause for compensation but when that number gets close to being 4 unplanned outages per day its starting to get to unacceptable levels...
Read the EULA. This is what you signed up for...
