Whenever ambulation is brought up, there is a torrent of whines, and people almost claiming that they will quit eve if ambulation arrives.
Why is this? Ambulation is developed by a different group than the people in charge of fixing drones, lag, and the ui anyways...
So it is basicaly just more content, free of charge.

If it done badly, we'll just end up with a whole bunch of ppl docked up forever and kind of playing another game. This would be almost like sharding the server but we'd end up with thousands of different shards, which none of us really wants, do we?
At least, thats my worst fear about it. However, they might have said this isn't going to be the case already. I don't know since I havent read much about it.

No. It's because they cannot see what it will add to the game apart from eye candy, and Eve is so much more than just another game filled with meaningless eye candy.

People be proud of their spaceship game, and worry that if CCP start designing Ambulation, it'll make it...er...less spaceshipy. More mainstream, at the very least.
Which is *******s really. Not only does Ambulation have little or no effect on the current EVE game, but it is something new and extra. For FREE. On top of that, they're developing it for their upcoming World of Darkness MMO anyway, so it'd be gosh darned wrong not to put it to good fuse for we EVE players too. ------

See, if these whiners would take the time to read dev blogs and interviews and such, they would realize that ambulation is much, much more than walking eye candy. The concepts of corporate offices with npc greeters that will run through a programmable dialog tree, personal stores, bars, casinos, ect are going to open up whole new areas of game play.

As they're already developing this for the WoD MMOG, it makes sense developmentally to make it compatible with EVE.
Further, I like the idea of owning my own club, and having a snazzy corporate office for PTSSS. In fact, I'm left wondering how I'm going to brand it all! Do I do a smokey gambling joint? A clean-cut corporate club? A dark and intimate club with private rooms for Caldari loyalists or corporate meetings? Or do I do opulence?
Further, how do I make money on this all? ;D

Sorry, what? Let's check that list again..
Corporate offices - already exist NPC greeters - no function that isn't covered by a website Personal stores - selling what exactly? Clothes? lol Bars - looool - drink pixels and pretend they're tasty! Casinos - Yeah maybe but again already covered by IGB sites Whole new areas of gameplay - where?
Don't get me wrong, I'm undecided, but I have yet to see what it will add to strategic gameplay.
Now if you're into roleplaying, which I am, then it may add something, but Eve has always been more than mere pantomime.

Fixing bugs is not a problem solved by simply throwing more people at it, in fact it can have the opposite effect of slowing things down or introducing even more bugs.

Because we already have enough "players" in this game that think of it as nothing more than a chatroom with a fancy gui. They also think that the only point to gaming is to hit on dudes that pretend to be chicks online.
This is why they create BS terms like "pvp" so they can then deem themselves "non-pvpers" and thus non-combatants(as if such a role could ever exist in a video game). This allows them to go hit on dudes all the time instead of actually playing.
Do we really need more dudes that drool over guys playing as (simulated) females?

Reasonable responses and that's why I'm undecided.
IF:-
Shops can sell all commodities - that would rock tbh, cos you could hook people into being regular buyers for your sets of stuff or customized (rigged) ships
Decor costs real cash - that would rock cos if you're filthy rich like me you can show it off*
CCP eventually introduce bipedal combat - r0xx00r!
So yeah, there is potential but it's still a worrying development for the reason that it could all just go Sims up!

Correct not "simply", but more resources being made available to bugs makes it much easier to solve them. Also, while it "can" have the opposite effect, it doesn't have to if those resources are properly managed and the scope isn't allowed to creep into new features.
Basically, the issue is that the "resources" should remain focused on the current issues, before they are freed up to start creating new features.

It's not more content. It will not add anything to the game. I fail to see the point of it.
So your avatar will have a a whole body and be able to walk on down to the LP store. How does this enhance my game play?
When it is released people will use it for 2 weeks and then never use it again. I can click on this button for the LP Store or I can watch my character walk to the LP Store. Same result except one takes more time. No thanks.
As for your argument about the ambulation not working on drones/ui or whatever: It's bunk. It's a complete bull**** argument. They could be working on other things or they could be fired and the money used to hire people who could add meaningful content to the game. Hell they could just fire them and give all the other CCP employees a raise or a few cases of beer. I feel that would be a better use of the money.

Totally agree. It's all going to hinge on how far CCP decides to take it. I feel like ambulation will blow if they release some half-assed, gimp version. That's one of the main reasons I'm trying to support it so heavily. If they give it everything they've got, I think we'll all be really impressed.

How do you know said resources are not being properly managed? Fixing bugs does not work to any set time scale. As for the rest it's been stated constantly from the start that the people and resources involved in development have little or nothing to do with those involved in bug fixing as they often require completely different tools and skills (you wouldn't want the graphics designer fixing code bugs unless you were bonkers).

Because the number of bugs and lag related issues have been continually increasing over the last year, not decreasing.
However, that said you miss-read what I wrote. I was simply saying that if you added extra resources to the bug/lag fix teams AND properly managed them, that it would be a positive and not necessarily negative factor on resolving issues.
Quote:

And once again if you would actually read what I wrote you would see that I wasn't suggesting that the "people" working on ambulation should be moved over to the bug fix team. Instead, I was suggesting that many customers would prefer that the "resources" (i.e. dollars/isk) was used instead to hire someone that could help resolve the current issues, before using those resources (i.e. dollars/isk) to hire said ambulation graphic designers.

Game + ambulation = more lag.
Considering that the game lags enough at times as it is. Add more pressure on the servers and we're going to have a major problem.
I would rather see more resources put toward solving the lag/server problems we have been experiencing lately. If it comes to it, I would rather see Rev 3 delayed until what we already have is stabilised to a satisfactory degree.

I agree, my only point is that a company as small as CCP has only limited resources (money, people, management oversight and strategic focus) to go around, and that taking on something as non-core as ambulation can't help but destract resources of all types from resolving the very large scale issues they are having with their core product/application. While simply adding more bodies won't necessarily help, adding a few of the right bodies and keeping the organizational focus on those issues might be a better use of the corporate resources until the issues are resolved.

That's not a valid argument. If they don't have the tools or skills to work on bugs they can be fired and the money can be used to hire people or buy tools.
It's a perfectly valid argument as I already mentioned how simply adding more people does not guarantee that bugs will be fixed faster.
As for your knee jerk reaction of simply firing people and hiring others in their place, that's a poor suggesstion for a number of reasons such as...
- Removing people from content development slows down the development of the game long term and even a bug free game will fail if players feel the world has become stagnant). - Hiring new bug fixing staff requires the new staff to be trained by the existing staff so bug fixing will actually slow down for quite some time. - With more bug fixers working on code there is more room for bugs to be introduced as there are more opportunities for mistakes to be made and the number of extra checks slows down the bug fixing cycle further.
Chances are CCPs bug fixing team is around the optimal size for the workload they have and the game is better off putting up with a few bugs in exchange for constantly growing and improving.
And where did you get this "many customers would prefer" stuff from? Take a survey did you?

Thanks. Now try and talk like a civilized adult and hopefully we can have a dialog.
Comments:
"you won't be able to run, only walk" - Anything that has a non ambulatory method of doing it will be used in preference since it will take less time.
"First, corporations will be getting meeting rooms. These will be large conference areas where they can sit at tables, look at computer displays, chat about strategy, and generally hang out. The meeting rooms will have a private corporation-only part and a public foyer where potential applicants can come and meet with current corporation members." This is no new content. Everything listed can be done with the current system. Ambulation gives no functionality gain.
"Also, an NPC can be set up with simple corporation information and answers to commonly asked questions in case no one is handy to talk to them. Players will chat with this NPC by navigating scripted dialogue trees that the corporation can create." Once again how is this an advantage over the current system? The only place I see this applicable is if your corp accepts applications from people you don't know and you have no one online currently. "Players will also be able to walk around the interior of their own ships." This is a complete waste. Since I can't have anyone else on my ship what's the point. "With access to a dressing area, you can probably guess what else will be available: clothes! Players will have access to a huge variety of clothing and accessories to wear on their characters and be able to swap between as many different outfits as they care to buy, as often as they like." Custimization of ship exterior should be placed way in front of having fashion shows. "Venues are simply stores within the game where players will be able to socialize, browse, shop, and gamble." This has possibility. "Everything available for sale in the stores will be player crafted items made from the same materials that are currently traded in EVE." If the items in the store are available on the regular market then it's not new content. If the items are not available on the market but only in the venue people will buy from the market because they won't have to walk there. "Non-player characters (like the informational corporation ones) can be placed in these venues with set dialogue trees to cater to customers when the proprietor is offline or away on business." This would be nice if they could take orders. However with shops and these NPCs all of this could be done with the current engine. Ambulation is not required. "When creating any kind of social space, the developers recognize that the players will need something to do. Shopping and talking aren't enough by themselves. That's why they want to implement games of chance for use in the bars and casinos." Gambling will always have an audience. As for bars. I imagine they will be in the trade hubs. Maybe outposts. But once again. There's no new content. It's simple a different background on the screen. "Emotes will play an important role in character interaction. CCP would like to allow characters to do complex things like shake hands, pat each other on the back, and hug, in addition to more common emotes like waving and bowing." All of this has been handled with text chat for literally decades. Once again no new functionality.

When you consider the fact that as far as I am aware ambulation is allmost a sidetrack of code that is in development for another non eve project, that money is allready factored in and being spent. Ambulation allows that money to work for eve aswell as the other game in development.
Ambulation will help attract more gamers = more money = more staff if and when they are needed.
Of course I have no idea what sort of cash flow CCP have so maybe it is a moot point
It seems to me at least that we should all be pleased. CCP are throwing the eve online userbase a bone. Unless my drunken mind is playing tricks and ambulation has nothing to do with any other development projects.

ah ... free of charge? i read in one of the interviews that they are still working on how pricing will be involved so don't assume it will be free. we had a discussion if they might bring something in with the planning room where gang bonus would no longer be calculated on the fly but be a set amount if done in the new corp planning area. reduce lag and encourage paying for the new 'content'.

Yeah, I got no problem with ambulation per se, but it is more than just monetary resources, it is strategic focus and support, which in a company as small as CCP is bound to be limited. At some point they need to get serious about their scalability issues and take a full dev cycle to really concentrate on refactoring and improving what they already have as opposed to constantly jamming in new stuff, be that ambulation or new core app features.
If they are like most dev shops, their folks assigned to work on the lag and bugs are propbably under constant presure to do 2 or more things at once, which can't help but detract from an initiative to so radically fix their underlying scale issues. I fully understand how hard it is to resist the biz dev guys when they keep promising all the extra subs if they only got these new features, but at some point you have to take a breathe and protect the core.

Since you don't seem to care about that odd stuff called immersion and roleplayers (zomg yes, backstory and news are a waste of our money too) I don't see why I should argue with you and the others about how our internet spaceship game should have people walking around or not. And then all those "more bugs", "more lag", "waste of x", "fire people, hire programmers" discussions... We could aswell get rid of the whole 3D stuff with fancy effects and have red squares with numbers sit around a brown square and then blue squares with numbers pop out of the brown squares and then the numbers go down and random squares disappear. Less fancy stuff = less lag + less bugs + less people to pay = cheaper subscriptions.
I like where ambulation seems to be going (heh) and what I read about it so far. Since CCP have decided they want to do this it's useless to rant about it anyways. Lots of people cancelling their subscription because of "useless" stuff might have more effect (see signature). Go ahead and show them! If you don't think that the people at CCP know what they're doing, why are you paying them?
Originally by: Tunak Custimization of ship exterior should be placed way in front of having fashion shows.
Customisation of ship exterior? Like adding scars and rust and some new paintjobs and logos? That's useless content, could as well use the ressources on fixing bugs. This will add new bugs! Having to load everyone's customized ship also causes lots of lag, we don't need more lag, go away...

If the clothes you buy in shops (and maybe things you can buy for your ship) can spruce up my portrait a bit I'm all for it. Especially as this seems to be more an adaptation of another project, not a real diversion of anything of importance. More immersion is never a bad thing.

People hate it because:
A) there are so many things wrong with EVE and yet CCP is devoting considerable resources to ambulation (yes, I know the visual guys doing this can't fix bugs but there salaries could pay for guys that would) B) most people think it will be flashy eye candy and nothing more as opposed to a useful feature and there are lots of useful features that people would rather have had C) closely related to B, most people consider it to not just be useless but designed to attract people that traditionally wouldn't play EVE in its current "hardcore" incarnation and they hate the idea of these people showing up and the idea that the game will be changed to pander to them
Does that answer your question?

Im all for ambulation if its done well.
A point that i havent seen mentioned yet is the shopping.I ran a very succesful droid/ship shop in SWG.If you were an artisan,a droid engineer, wanted a spaceship, wanted to upgrade a spaceship, wanted advice on any of the above,my store was a one-stop shop.If i wasnt there then usually my friend who i subleted too was there and could help you out with questions, purchases or designing custom builds.Anytime of day there was always someone there.Owners, townsppl, customers, all factions were welcomed, and word got out amongst some of the jedi i was willing to part with some of my finer resources for their lightsabers. The player owned city i lived in also had other stores set up with high quality down to noob rdy-to-go goods. So whatever you needed, and it could be had,it was in our town..
I see the same thing happening here....instead of having to bounce around from system to system, station to station like i often have to now.you can put money on it that some ppl, even whole corps that are organized, will set up shops that cater to everything you need, all in that one station. This could lead to the advent of franchising...omg in a video game...ya..it was done on flurry server in SWG.Person named magi...she "licenced" others to sell in her name... We'v already got corporations. Why not take it to the next logical level if stores become a functional reality. This also gives more emphasis on logistics support.Which in turns needs more security. It really does add a new level of gameplay, should ppl wish to pursue it.Sloths need not apply.
Nother thing that some pl like to draw attention to is that its being implemented for "social" reasons...uhm well ya...unless im mistaken Eve is a MMORPG,massively multiplayer....uhm what part of that says anti social?
Bugs,lag,bugs,lag....show me a online game that doesnt have bugs, lags, glitches, exploits, hacks etc etc...that is the reality of playing online games. They have to constantly evolve, and it results in less then perfection.Accept it,demand more....and be patient.

Yes ambulation is going to suck its going to add more depth to the game more activities to do (i for one am looking forward to gambling) hopefully there will be boxing or sports type activities even if not at the start down the road possibly. Anything that adds more immersion variety and makes sense from a game play standpoint must be a horrible thing. I mean what are stations for exactly just docking looking at my hanger and undocking?
Never mind that this major game play update is going to get ccp and eve alot of press and publicity and will most likely interest new players to try eve out, more targets for pvpers, more people to scam for people that like to do that, more market demand for items, yes these must be horrible things indeed.
One thing i really hope they do tho in preperation is a major server upgrade leading up to it, do their best to lock down the desynch issues other than that i could care less what bugs they fix or don't fix honestly.

Edited by: CherniyVolk on 14/09/2007 23:36:51 I don't care for ambulation due to it essentially becoming a realm within a realm. To a certain extent, we already have this with some people staying in Empire and others staying in 0.0. But, what is there to do in a FPS style walk around?
Here are some things to keep in mind.
Each station will need to be unique in it's layout of pathways. Presumably, some sort of interface to navigate through the halls to locate certain services and offices; much like any directory listing found in large corporate buildings today.
All this content needs to be dynamic, including the plausibility of each office being able to be customized, otherwise, visually, there would be no indication you're within one office or the other. Take a station with hundreds of corporation offices... now imagine having to load all that crap just to dock.
Player interaction would be a mess, and likely repel some current as well as prospective customers. It is very difficult, to attempt to animate a human face and expressions. Even people with Aspergers Syndrome are well aware of subtle expressions to feel uncomfortable with animated human figures.
All in all, I think it's a big task for CCP to undertake; and do even nominally well. Personally, I think a more content rich experience within a station should be limited such that the focus of the game isn't misdirected (which is, to fly around in space not walk around in station.)

I play this game largely because I don't have to put up with stupid crap like that. It's just cut throat economics and blowing people up. No dumbass "social interaction."

To all the people talking about Ambulation takeing away from CCP's ability to fix bugs and lag and blah blah blah this is my response which I copy&paste directly from the developer's blog:
The Need for Speed philosophy dictates a ratio of 6 improvements for 1 feature, thus keeping our focus on improving what's in there instead of bells and whistles (and perpetuating older issues). The drawback there is of course less shiny new buttons to press and that can be a hard sell, but we hope you approve. There is a lot already inside EVE, it's depth probably one of it's strongest selling point.
This is just one small segment of a whole lot of talk in the blog about their decisions to concentrate on fixing problems and the like, so no ambulation isn't takeing away from anything. They are going to continue to expand the game regardless of anything anyone says so instead of argueing about bugs talk about what u would rather them devote the now obviously limited resources they have devoted to adding new features.
I personally think ambulation will be cool sometimes it's fun to just sit back and chat with folks inbetween the PvPing and all the other goodness this game has to offer. Ambulation would make this social part of the game much much more enjoyable.

If the shop is not accessable via the regular market system then people will not go to it. It's the same item but you have to spent more time walking to purchase it. If the shop is available via the market then it's exactly the same as the current set up; ambulation adds nothing.

You don't need to walk their offices to know they don't have enough resources working on bugs and lag, all you need to do is attempt to log into Jita or engage in fleet warefare.
Jita is a VERY bad example to use for this argument. I don't see why 500-600 idiots who mostly sit around idle in one system and then come onto the forum to cry about the lag there should be a top priority to CCP.
That aside, how do you know they don't have the right amount of resources working on those problems? Don't you think if it was a simple matter of throwing more people onto it, it would have been fixed a LONG TIME AGO?
Unlike some people on these boards, i am not going to pretend I am an expert but something tells me it is a bit more complicated than simply adding more people.
Maybe that is how you guys fight your battles in game {by throwing vast numbers of bodies into the fray} but that doesn't mean it is the way to fix EvE's lag problems.

People whine about it because
(1) They want CCP to devote time to fixing things now rather than making new things. This is at least understandable.
(2) They're too unimaginative to understand the communications possibilities you can build into something like that.
(3) They too poor/lazy to get a new PC that can handle the sort of graphics they're showing.

No it's not. Your argument relies on the stipulation that the ambulation people can only be working on ambulation. They could be doing _something_ else.
Except ambulation is being developed by the team working on CCPs new MMO with the ambulation project being a bonus addition to Eve since the technology's there and being developed.
So there only puting it in as a warm up for the shiney new Vampire mmorpg hhmmm you know theres a term for that what was it ahhhh yep BETA TESTING oh yay and everything that title implies .
Not to mention you know CCP's track record they broke the game for a week just changing the chat font
Plus anyone else here remember the last major code base change they made with RMR because honestly that was handled well and did not kill the servers dead for 2 weeks and leave them in a critical conditon for 2 month afterwards.
The main reason sensible ppl moan about this crap is purely that CCP are taking a huge risk in making the server even worse for what amounts to adding sims in space.
yep I have read all the INTENDED features for walking(let's call it what it is) but there again i read all the intended features for EvE in general over last 4 yrs and i would say theres a good 45% of them still MIA.
So in summing up my real fear is this is what will deliver the death blow to server preformance and kill eve dead(at least as anything other than a glorified chat room)

What the other guy said. They chose to refer to it as "ambulation" as to differentiate EVE from the running around helter-skelter willy-nilly movement that characterizes most MMORPGs. You know...where actual WALKING is a sure way to become old before you get to the next mob.

So it is basicaly just more content, free of charge.
It is not free of charge, we pay a monthly sub fee, which funds development (all development). Some people would prefer that that money was used to augment the team that fixes bugs, lag, etc rather than hiring a new team to do ambulation.
Point out where in the EULA it states that every penny you pay for eve goes towards improving EVE. CCP is a company, which charges us for a game service. They can do whatever they want with their money, and their game, and if you don't like it you don't have to pay every month. I'd say considering the state of the game and the FREE econtent expansions theyre churning out, complaining about every red cent not being thrown into bug fixing is pretty silly. If they want to invest in a new game they're pretty entitled to it, EVE is already very much above par when it comes to MMO's.

I don't dislike ambulation itself, i'm just sick of superfluous fluff being added, or replacing stuff that was already in game and working fine, without at least the courtesy of giving us an option to turn them off in the same update.
cases in point...
Seamless map - a waste of time and not in least bit better than the one it replaced.
Heat - everyone's UI altered to accomodate something that to date, i've yet to find anyone that uses. -

Are you familiar with something called planetside? It was a giant planetary warfare MMO. It was cool and all but it's not EVE and if you want that you should just play it and leave EVE alone. If planetary warfare were to be realistic in any way than a single Dreadnought could utterly devastate and depopulate a fully developed world in a few hours so there wouldn't be much of a point...Oh the enemy has routed our fleet and we have to withdraw from this system, well then order the capitals to destroy that world on our way out...basically every fight for a major planet would end that way.

Completely agree. 'Ambulation' (although I had to think about it a few seconds before I worked out what it was) will only ADD to the game. I can't for the life of me see how it's going to take away from it. Those players are still in the game but, if anything, assuming there will be additional hardware to handle the in-station elements, it will take the load off for those in flight. Can you imagine what Jita would be like if there was a different server handling half the current residents?

What, you think even in a one-room station people would walk rather than run? These're gamers we're talking about. Why take two seconds to get there when you could do it in one? The only way players would choose 'walk' over 'run' would be if there's no button for 'run'. |

I disagree. I think the more ground a game like this can cover the better its potential. Accepting that each section has to be done well in order to work, I think the developers should be willing to limit themselves if they're not confident that they can do something properly. But arguing that this is a game about spaceships so shouldn't have anything in it other than spaceships, well, with respect I think that's fairly short-sighted. Hypothetically, if 'ambulation' - or planetary battles, atmospheric flight or even ships with submarine capabilities - could be added and made to work, then it would add to the game and should be implemented.
And it should be possible for players who aren't interested in any given element to choose not to participate in it. For example, once SWG introduced space combat my character very rarely walked on the ground after that.

Aye, true - I was thinking BC3000 myself. However, I was thinking of it as it should've been, rather than as it was. BC3000's problems didn't come of it being a bad idea, but from it being produced by a guy trying to do the bedroom-coder thing with a pretty epic concept. The game was riddled with bugs and the creator either didn't have the skill or the time to resolve them. The company's unapproachable attitude and (in many people's experience) refusal or inability to provide customer support didn't help that game or its variants either.
BC3000 was a great idea, and if anyone were able to produce a solid, working version of it then I'm sure it would sell well. Perhaps they might need to choose a different name, though. I suggest Battlestar Galactica, if anyone's thinking about it... It's about time there was a decent game there. |

I think Ambulation will add some aspects to the game. If we ever plan to land on planets it is a step in the right direction.
Remember its not something that is required.
I think it is cool about the board rooms :).
On forums, I've noticed that the alliances I've been in that it is very hard to get everyone to register and participate. It might be easier to get them to do so in a game setting.
I came from SWG after the dark times there :(. If not for the NGE I'd probably happy still sitting on my tailor shop on naboo on Radiant or my chef shop on naboo on Wanderhome.
Anyway while we will be limited initially I do hope they'll expand the ambulation part of the game over time :).
With the way its being implemented it will not in any way really impact on those who chose not to do it other than you might have to chose your initial avatar I suppose.
I hope some day we can go down to the planets :).
Thoughts expressed are mine and mine alone. They do not necessarily reflect my alliances thoughts. |

Agreed. It was a great idea that was hampered by a decade + dev cycle. If you were to take some pros and recode it nowadays, and call it "Warship 3100CE", I'd buy it.
The real underlying problem that comes in is that your average capital ship could pretty much sterilize a planet in short order. Hell, a titan can just fly near a planet and wreak untold destruction. I don't care what mechanic you put in place to discourage this sort of behavior, someone will grief regardless. So, picture your little spy op, where you're breaking into a corporate building to steal a blueprint or war plans, and suddenly... some jerk-off with a few bil to burn melts the entire continent. I don't care if a different team is working on it. That team still costs money that could have been used to hire staff to create real content, or heaven forbid, fix the 5 year old bugs.

People whine about it because their subscription gives them a false sense of entitlement. Entitlement to command CCP to develop this or that.
It happens in every MMO. It's even worse in world of warcraft.
Find the % of subscribers doing it, however. And you realize that CCP doesn't really have to bother with such a tiny minority. ___________________________________

I agree with what your saying and tctically the practice of "scorched earth",has been used in Rl earth,ie soviets in WW2 for example. But there are a lot of options that could be used to make it not a option basically.
1.Planetary defense mechanism, shield, mega weapons only planet useable. 2.Punitive Corporate measure, trade tariffs, increases on taxes. 3.Branded as war criminals, this could have standing factors with npc/pc corps. 4.Concord involvement,a kill list for concord could be developed, concord would actively hunt down and kill every member of the corporation,as they logged in. 5.Trade sanctions, trade embargoes, punitive tax rates on sales, retricted from space stations, increase manufacturing, research costs etc.
Im sure there are more options that could be implemented fairly easily to prevent/or minimize scenario like this happening every day.And even if a planet did get wiped out...just buy some slaves and repopulate....

It is a perfect example, because 500-600 hundred people in a single system is the type of scale that has been necessary for fleet battles too. And from an app scale issue it really isn't that much, they should be able to handle it.

Maybe not, but I am positive that ambulation or new core app features won't solve it either. In fact, they can only detract from the issues by introducing new variables and diluting resources.

Ambulation will be the best thing that ever happened to EVE. It will completely revolutionise the way that the game is played (even if optional), in many, blatantly obvious ways which do not need clarification.
The only thing that I worry about is will the servers be able to handle the extra subscriber load that ambulation will generate? For every person that I know personally who is (needlessly) upset about ambulation, I know another three who wish to become EVE subscribers but steadfastly refuse to do so until ambulation arrives.
And anyone who says "fix the game before adding new stuff" is just frankly not thinking before they type. Big games companies don't work like that, and we ALL know this, because it's been discussed ad infinitum elsewhere. Getting the "new stuff" guys to do what the "bugfix" guys do would be like getting your plumber to do your accounting. At least, thats my worst fear about it. However, they might have said this isn't going to be the case already. I don't know since I havent read much about it.
Edit: spelling
So you're afraid that Ambulation will be better than EvE?
I don't see why adding more things to do in the game is bad. It might be a "kind" of sharding, as you say, but the "good kind - the one that keeps everyone in one common universe. They'll still be in new Eden when they undock, while having the potential to let CCP serve up a game experience with seperate hardware. If nothing else, it has potential to allow more people in the game without making TQ cry. More subs = more resources = bigger TQ.
Personally, I think opening up the stations has ENORMOUS potential. The possibility to have player-generated content, for one thing: Imagine being able to rent an office in a station and design it yourself; the layout, decor, adding features, internet radio links for your guests and with its own chat channel. That my seem too Simsish to many; that's fine, no-one's saying that CCP will be forcing you to do the ambulation thing, but it would surely be a point of pride for many alliances to have the best designed club (Imagine going to the IAC stations!).
And really, that's just the least of the possible potential.

Why? Because Eve is internet spaceships. I'm supposed to be heavily implanted into my pod, not even sure if I'm supposed to be able to get out of my pod on a regular basis.
If I do, I am vulnerable to being killed-- that much is clear from the scientific articles on pods and cloning.
By getting out of your pod you risk your immortality. You no longer are cushioned by the goo. You have to unplug from your constant companion, the ship's computer (as evidenced by Aura).

No. It's because they cannot see what it will add to the game apart from eye candy, and Eve is so much more than just another game filled with meaningless eye candy.
It's going to be *****in' and I can't wait.
so in other words, its going to add more time to a space fighter tactical game, and encourage people to stay docked at stations moreso than a titan and support fleet in system.
the game is about space conflict, not chatting with a visual avatar like IMVU or whatever chat program it is that lets you have a 3d person dressed and colored to your preference so people can look at your person while you chat.
Quote: Sorry, what? Let's check that list again..
Corporate offices - already exist NPC greeters - no function that isn't covered by a website Personal stores - selling what exactly? Clothes? lol Bars - looool - drink pixels and pretend they're tasty! Casinos - Yeah maybe but again already covered by IGB sites Whole new areas of gameplay - where?
Don't get me wrong, I'm undecided, but I have yet to see what it will add to strategic gameplay.
Now if you're into roleplaying, which I am, then it may add something, but Eve has always been more than mere pantomime.
It dilutes the game into more pieces instead of making the gameplay for space combat more interesting and rewarding. I came here to blow you up, not stroke your epeen in virtual office design or click a button so an avatar drinks "colored pixels", wasting my time doing that instead of what I came to the game to do. you say fine then dont do it. but what if office design and being sociable in a "bar" become community requisites for interacting with people outside of stations, such as, if you dont even have a well decorated office noone takes you seriously?
Once it hits though, Im pretty CCP will realized they wasted their time. hindsight is always 20/20.
dont forget, are these people getting paid to create this project? then why not sink that CAPITAL into better or more servers or hiring more people to fix current problems? little green pieces of paper, you've still got to look at where they're going.
CCP are of course free to dilute their game and waste their capital as they wish, but remember, its because of the complaints of new people who dont get how deep the game is already, and a minority of older players who whine, that this changed. buckling to pressure of ignorance and a minority of the population isnt going to please the majority, and therefore is more wasted money.
Originally by: An Anarchyyt Because people will whine about anything. And seems to have this idea that only one thing can happen at a time. And if it isn't the one thing they want, then the temper tantrum comes.
its the whining that brought us to this point in the first place, perhaps even you were one of those.
Originally by: VicturusTeSaluto Because we already have enough "players" in this game that think of it as nothing more than a chatroom with a fancy gui.
Do we really need more dudes that ..

For all of you worried about people doing silly, unusual, immature things:
We are pod-pilots. In-game, we kill hundreds of thousands of people on a regular basis. We are immortal until our minds cannot be cloned.
Who is to say that we wouldn't all be rather warped because of that?
I'm INCREDIBLY excited for this, for any number of reasons. The biggest is that I'm endlessly fascinated by the sense of scale in EVE, and I want to get out of my pod, turn around, and look at my battleship that's three times the length of the empire state building and roughly as tall.
If you don't think that's cool, and don't want the experience of walking around the stations, fine, don't. But if CCP is going to be developing the technology ANYWAY, and if EVE can support it ANYWAY, then, well, why the hell not? __________________________________

If a ship can have shield generators, why can't a city?

I'm not reading this entire thread, so sorry if this has already been said.
I think the Walking in Stations thing is necessary for EVE to really grow out of its niche market some.
I think it will definitely make the game more appealing to a wider sector of MMO subscribers.
I believe CCP when they say that ambulation environments will be run on separate servers or nodes and therefore will not add to lag.
However The game already has performance issues. Appealing to more players is likely to lead to greater numbers of concurrent logins. More logged on at the same time, given the current conditions, is still likely to lead to more lag issues even if they aren't directly related to walking an avatar around.
New subscribers may be drawn in by the flashy new avatars, but CCP has said that this waling in stations thing is going to be totally optional content. That pretty much says to me that it will be far and away from being the "main game". The primary content of the game will still be flying and dying in space. So... new people come to the game, ooo and ah over the avatars, get bored with that and jump in a ship. Great. Ambulation environments run lag free but now there's more people in game and likely more clogging up the same old systems.
What if 2 months after ambulation release the new concurrent login record is 60K? Does anyone here think there will be less lag?
Ambulation looks cool. I think it's a necessary evolutionary step for them to take. I just don't think their servers are ready for it.

As others have pointed out, it's because they feel things like lag need to be sorted out before massive additions to the game are introduced. Of course, they never seem to get the fact that not all programmers are specialized in networking, or that adding more minds to fix the problem might only end up adding confusion.

I haven't really talked to anyone who was against it. The only reason I could possibly think of is that they are arguing it takes CCP's attention away from things they think are more important (certain bug fixes, for example). Except that's dumb because they have multiple teams working on multiple things (like all programming companies do), and they aren't only doing one thing at a time.
Frankly, I think if you complain about ambulation, you deserve to be podded repeatedly until you cry. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- "We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience our piracy may have caused you, but, we are pirates and, sadly, this is our way." |

CCP didn't have to hire these people. They could have used the money to hire people to fix drones, or more people to fix lag. Or more server improvements.

Hmm let's see:
1. It adds nothing realy meaningfull to the game. Just a prettier graphical chat interface. 2. It has to run somewhere. Means CCP has to spend money on it. Means spending money on a feature that is optional. Do you see the wasted resource ? 3. It has to be integrated with EVE, just because it will use EVE data (corp info, station info, avatar info etc.). This means a lot more bug entry points will exist. Even if they are handled by that separate team that's creating Ambulation, they will be seen as EVE bugs. So expect lot more whines and petitions etc. Also more management resources are needed just to sort them out. 4. It is a sidetrack from the main EVE theme. And as such is not needed. If you want a full body avatar, feel free to pick any other MMO out there. We do not need more WoW kiddies here.

1. Read some stuff about it before you say that. It's actually adding a lot more to the game than just 'walking around'. It's too much to go into here, but I will give you this link: http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/11410 The second page is the part you want, I think.
2. Irrelevant. They are paying the creative and new development part of the team anyway, and that group isn't working on bug fixes. Would you rather the creative/new design team sat around getting paid and not doing anything? The only 'wasted' resource here is that they are buying new servers.
However, I think since CCP manages their own finances and hiring and purchases, and whatnot, they are much more qualified than anyone here to say what is a waste of resources.
3. Petitions for what? Lost ships? How will the ambulation code cause your ship to get killed by rats? The codes have nothing to do with each other. In C++ it would just be like the main() calling the Ambulation(); function. The ambulation(); isn't going to be able to mess with the SpaceFlight(); stuff. Plus, they are using separate servers for the ambulation stuff (apparently).
That's like saying the forums cause bugs in-game because they use character names, corp + alliance names, and race.
4. It's not a sidetrack. It's an evolution and an addition. The main EVE theme is space. If anything, it's going to broaden the market a little bit, and we can nab some of those WoW players. Then, CCP will be able to use that influx of money/resources to pay for more management, hardware, etc., which would alleviate any problem that could be caused as you mention in your 3rd point (but I still don't think it will cause many problems).
Saying we don't need more WoW kiddies is just silly. Kids almost never play this, it's too complex. Fine. But, like it or not, there are a lot of people above the age of 14 who play WoW.
That's how I see it, anyway. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- "We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience our piracy may have caused you, but, we are pirates and, sadly, this is our way." |

When you have a large, active, and passionate player base, every decision you make, every change to the game, no matter how convinced you are that it makes the game strictly better, will **** someone off, and they'll post about it, blog about it, rant to the press about it, loudly and publicly predict that this is the "beginning of the end" of your game, and send hate mail to your community and support teams. Edited by: Admiral Nova on 16/09/2007 08:25:18 I think many people play this game because there is no need to 'walk around'. And people fear that they will HAVE TO, walk around stations if they want some of the new content associated with the walking. As people say shops and things, things that you have to walk to get to... If all the 'in station' content is availble without having to 'walk' to get to it, people will probably be much happier, but then we won't need the walking around bit will we ?
We live in a game where you can get what you want by clicking on menu's, it will be a shock to some if they have to pointlessly move an avatar to a location manually to get at something.
Already people complain that they have to go to a certain region to use the market there, think about when you have to go to a specific station THEN actually get out and walk around to do something.

If your friends didnt like the space fighter concept back then, tell them ambulation isnt going to change the core concept of the game, simply dilute it a bit and end in nothing. theres not goign to be any gunfights on stations. your friends are ill informed it seems, and dont know what they want.

since its still going to be mainly a space shooting strategy and numbers crunching game, its not getting out of its niche with a 10% dilution. in fact, it may attract the wrong type of people, or even those ill informed of what the game really is. as such, they'll likely play for a little while, and then get bored and leave. the CAPITAL CCP has spent on this project isnt justified by the returns. people who play the game for what it is will play. those that come because "ooh cool its a new feature in a game I didnt want to play before it got put in" will still play a bit and leave.
and hasnt the Pbase risen from a few thousand to around 150k? its having no trouble growing in its "niche", and I for one dont want the singularity of this game to be compromised because of a few whiners who say they want "ambulation" because they're teenagers who dont know what they really want, except some excuse to play a game they arent interested in. imo, people who lie to themselves generally arent the ones to get reliable product enhancement ideas from.

But if CCP is going to be developing the technology ANYWAY, and if EVE can support it ANYWAY, then, well, why the hell not?
no, its not really going to help. I've personally seen games grow from a unique and rewarding format to a bloated and uninteresting one from the additions of "cool features". whenever someone bases their argument on "its cool", 9 out of 10 times that thing should NOT be implemented. it leads to more disaster than help.
But, CCP are already working on it and are so close to finishing anyway that it will come. Of course, those of us prognosticating its lifespan on the attention of core Eve players will be proven correct, and hopefully CCP will stop listening to minority group pressure, delusional teenagers, and a few whiners when making major real world CAPITAL decisions that will do nothing to make players want to stay. a game should grow slowly and carefully. and who said change was good anyway? people replace the word unchanged for stagnant. stagnant is a negative connotation, yet is so often used to persuade by its connotation, that it can easily cause more harm than good. unchanged doesnt mean bad. we're here because, by and large the game has remained unchanged, right? its the same as it was 2 years ago and people still play, and the numbers of subscribers is growing. you might note another phrase "dont mess with success".

I really think you've shown your ignorance here. a picture may be worth a thousand words, but what an uneducated fool looks at the picture, it will sure be mistranslated.

well, like it or not, its called prediction, which comes with variables and likelyhoods. rulers of countries have analysts to help them with likely future problems. if you're going to sit there and tell me that probabilities are meaningless, you must have dropped out of school and self induced intelligent thought and understanding of your reality.

This. EVE is still very much a word of mouth game. Everyone here agrees that ambulation will be fluff and that the meat of the game will still be in space. What we're fixing to walk into is a game where there's this great but pointless walking-around-in-a-space-station sim, and the unpolished shoot-things-in-space game that it's tacked on to. We get trial players lured in by the ambulation, only to have them undock and go, "WTF?" They quit in short order, and promptly tell their friends that EVE is garbage. Without ambulation, they wouldn't have picked up the game in the first place. So instead of them never playing and having a net effect on non-player perception of zero, now they have a brief effect of +1 and a long term effect of -1.
It's funny how the players of one of the most brutal and unforgiving games on the market are facing a potential paradigm shift, and all they see are rainbows and unicorn farts.

I'll wager my bloated software professional wage that I know more about it than you.
A better analogy for software engineering is: Nine women can't make a baby in one month. Same goes for any smallish software project. Bigger (vastly more complex) ones can go faster with more people.
Yet there are vastly more babies to be made (bugs to be fixed) than 1. In fact i dare say there is more than one bug in eve per bughunter/bug fixer. While i'm sure just adding more people in fixing fleet fight lag, or adding people in redesigning the engine will have less effect, eve has been plagues by a vast amount of minor bugs that have been around for ages. Those bugs, while not gamebreaking are simply annoying and putting some resources into fixing those in stead of another useless feature would be better.
As someone has said, use the resources to pay wages for more bug fixers and less for new useless content.

Can anyone please list out some of these bugs? Honestly I have yet to come across more than MAYBE one bug that repeats itself to the point of being annoying. In fact, I have yet to come across any real bug that can't be attributed to lag. What exactly is buggy? Drones not responding (lag)? Ship won't warp (lag)?
In most cases that lag is just your connection, not the server, anyway. I never have a problem with lag unless I'm in a 300 man fleet.

Christ.
we are not assuming CCP will mess everything up. we are taking historical, factual gaming data into account and comparing that to what will happen when ambulation is introduced. you're not really arguing with any logic, only the same old, dont do it if you dont want attitude, and sprinkled with a little character assassination. btw, how can you fit 5000 characters of quotes in a 2k max post? tell me how and Ill fix it.also, read the post above before you make any more remarks on how the game has already been affected by this step to ambulation, and what it will change in terms of public exposure, etc etc. dont post unless you're logically constructive and not simply trying to eloquently say "ambul is cool but dont do it if you hate it". you forget that there is such a thing as causality.
work on ambulation introduces: capital spent on these coders. programming work done on it. time spent going in a wrong direction. money spent going in a wrong direction. a snowball bad publicity effect once the kiddies who havent played the game unless ambul is intro'd tell their friends it sucks, and leave the game, causing bad publicity on the way. more waiting for more servers or better servers or code to handle lag. (yes the upcoming patch should help, but more servers than less would help too.)
if you're really not going to think beyond your own personal and illogical argumentative position, dont post. simple. you may not like the argument, but you dont have to participate do you? using the same logic you use to describe how us players treat ambulation when it comes.
oh no, almost out of characters left!! (hint hint)

which leads to the point of people drawn into the game by it, then leaving and creating bad publicity by word of mouth, to friends, on other forums, etc. if people talk trash about WoW here, dont you think wow kiddies who see this "ambulation" promise here will come, be disappointed and go back to WoW spewing anti-Eve hate on their forums? Supposedly eve players are more mature, and even they do that here. food for thought

Edited by: Moridin920 on 16/09/2007 09:52:50 Look at post 154 + 155. Tell me there's absolutely no way that could be one post.
First off, it wasn't character assassination beyond simply suggesting you make less posts, and make those ones longer. It really isn't necessary to totally quote the post above. People can see it.
What historical and factual data? Where is it? Link it. What exactly are you talking about, and where is the source? It sounds impressive, but it's not really backed by anything, still.
Most companies have different teams, such as a team dedicated to creating new content and coding it. They don't touch the bug stuff. That's a different team's problem. Basically, those guys are getting paid, anyway. Ambulation is pretty high profile, I'm assuming that's why people keep saying it draws resources, but what about all the new stuff? What about the 20 new T2 ships? Why does no one care that those are going to draw resources? The simple answer is that the creative design team is on top of those and the guys are going to get paid to do creative design REGARDLESS of whether they do ambulation or not.
Time + money spent in going in a wrong direction. Since you can't really prove its a wrong direction one way or another, this isn't really valid. I know people who said outposts in 0.0 were going in the wrong direction. Right now, this is all just speculation.
They ARE adding more servers, as it happens. Ambulation and the in-station work is going to be done on completely separate servers. The devs have stated this a few times, now.
Right now, your best argument is the 'if-then' situation with the bad publicity. But since 'if-then' statements are logical fallacies, maybe you should not be trying to blast my own illogicality?
You're almost out of characters because you found it necessary to quote the post right above you. Good job.

Prolly posted already but, wasn't the amubulation engine already being worked on for there other mmo so they just said "hey lets take this and throw it on to EvE so we can get an idea how people like the whole engine before we try it for our mmo"
AKA the other mmos team did all the programming for ambulation, the Eve-dev team just took it and made it EvE like.
Besides Ingame drugs is more then enough reason for them to implement it. --

If ambulation is implemented, they will need more servers. When they add the new servers on, the computer will become sentient and try to take over the world.
If you want ambulation, why do you hate humanity?!
And yeah, Rilder. Thanks for reading. Had forgotten about that.
CCP took most of the ambulation code from a different MMO they were/are working on (those with the resource diversion argument must be getting a migraine upon reading that), and they didn't actually have to do any of the core code to put it in Eve (just the visual). They wanted to see how it'd work in Eve.

Well a lot of people would rather see ccp focus on current issues first before adding in something they think is quite complicated and might cauze even more problems, also, sofar it doesn't seem to be that ambulation has any other benefits then to be purty and kewl (which impo is a benefit on it's own but thats just me)
It's the same reason why some people play without sound i guess, it has no benefit for them apparently and might cause problems so they turn it off, for me, playing eve without the sound would be boring, i like the sound and tbh i never noticed it giving me any probs.

Moridin, I know this is speculation and borderline doomsaying, but try to follow me here.
WoW is dying. Yeah, good one, right? Seriously. The next expansion is going to do a triple front flip while jumping the shark. They're ignoring and insulting large portions of their subscriber base, and continuing to cater to the 1%. Think Trials of Atlantis for DAoC or NGE for SWG times ten. It's going to be ugly, and the end result is that multiple millions of their players are going to go open market. EVE is one of the top ten MMOs in the US and Europe. It's inevitable that we're going to get some of those players. The concept that a subset of those new players will be attracted by ambulation while simultaneously having little understanding of the fundamentals of EVE is not far fetched. Now, take CCP's track record for fixing long-standing game problems and compound it by the new problems presented by a game population that potentially doubles overnight. The fact that ambulation is so immaterial and housed on separate servers will actually enhance the shock, disappointment, and anger when these people hit space and see what the game's all about and where the deficiencies lay. This is the mysterious bad publicity that seems to materialize from nowhere.

Originally by: Hugh Ruka Edited by: Hugh Ruka on 16/09/2007 06:46:30 Hmm let's see:
1. It adds nothing realy meaningfull to the game. Just a prettier graphical chat interface. 2. It has to run somewhere. Means CCP has to spend money on it. Means spending money on a feature that is optional. Do you see the wasted resource ? 3. It has to be integrated with EVE, just because it will use EVE data (corp info, station info, avatar info, chat channels etc.). We do not need more WoW kiddies here.
that's all atm ...
1. What is there that helps you in PvP? PvE? train skills ? Mine ? Defend systems ? Attack systems ? I mean ANYTHING that the game evolves around ? There's a minor sidetrack to corp interface and trading. Other than that, it's just a graphical chat. Get off the hook and try to think about how all those things in ambulation will enhance you current gameplay in helping you to achieve goals ?
2. Irrelevant ? So you rather have new hardware sponsored for ambulation than TQ ? Great. Not for me please ...
3. Well and what if you get stuck getting back to TQ? Can you imagine what it can take to transition your char back and forth ? And as written before, there still have to be interfaces preserved so you can interact with TQ residents in corp and/or local etc. These present another difficulty.
4. The main EVE theme is MMORPG ... do we want to have fantasy chars just because other RPGs have them? If it gets too bloated, people will loose interest.
But kids do like nice graphic chats ...

So in essence: Ambulation will be nifty and good-looking, as far as it goes The real problem is that EvE is rubbish.
Gotcha.

Not rubbish, but certainly not flawless. This leaves us with two scenarios:
1) Ambulation is half-assed. All the time, effort, and money put into it is truly wasted.
-OR-
2) Ambulation is well polished. This throws into even starker contrast the flaws present in the rest of the game.
Neither one is a position of net gain. I'd hate to be the poor marketing sod asked the question, "Ambulation is a true joy to experience, but POS warfare is still plagued with poor implementation. How do you account for this?"

It's the Yiddish word for a specific portion of a certain male-only body part. However, it's also a German surname and a mild derogatory term in English.

that content would make for a full standalone game, which ambulation is a basis for (the vampire rpg). so ambulation+content = standalone game only marginaly related to EvE (story, universe). but not as an EvE accessory which we most definitaly do not need.

Hmmm but on the other hand, once ambulation is in place and working, it becomes a LOT easier to subsequently add content.
Kinda like the way EvE started out...

Well I was teasing you just a little I admit. And I'll readily agree that POS warfare is not the shining jewel of EvE. But as others have said, not doing ambulation isn't likely to make any difference to the bugs in the game. The team that are doing the programming are working on the White Wolf thing; the vast majority of EvE-specific work will be from the graphic artists & such. These are not the guys who have anything to do with fixing bugs. A case might be made that they should be making Caldari ships look less fugly, but that's pretty much fluff too. Really, the opportunity cost to SpaceshipsEvE is much less than some people are making out, apart from the dead African children, of course. (If simply throwing more people and money at the problem was a solution, Vista would be bug-free...)
On the other hand, Ambulation has potential to open up a new dimension in the game, and one that will cater directly to those people who aren't interested in AllianceFleetPOSblobSupercapLagfest style activities. And it might not suck! (OK, this is CCP we're talking; it will be great in ways which no other FPS MMORPG is, but will also have 2 or 3 or 10 outstandingly and universally annoying flaws which will be ignored for years).
Now I agree that attracting a large influx of WoW-grown n00bs who threaten to call the police when their Bantam gets pwned trying to mine in lo-sec is a worry. But trying to avert that by keeping the game narrow and stale isn't the solution IMO.
PS For the life of me I can't think of a good way to reform POS warfare, and maybe CCp can't either. That's not to say they shouldn't do anything else until someone has a good idea though.

Imagine all is working, you have the ambulation part and the original part. and each is developing in its own way. both have separate dev teams, separate hardware, just linked by a few comm channels. why the hell not make the separate?
the ambulation bugger will not like that he is funding the original part and vice-versa. more problems in the future with lots of problems still unsolved from the past.

I'm aware of all the benefits of ambulation. In all honesty, I like it. It has great potential to expand the existing game, while also bringing in the new blood we need. Hell, I'd love it if it was CS in space. Let's see how those CS kiddies like it when their respawn point is 5 systems and two gatecamps away. I'm really just giving the solid business background to the negatives. Too much of the discussion on the big topics devolves into "ME LIKEY" or "JOO R DUM, IT IS SUCK."
My arguments are somewhat selfish. If business suddenly spikes and then, six months later, completely tanks, CCP could potentially make some business decisions with money that they simply don't have. We're talking the potential, however far-fetched, for CCP to no longer be solvent and this game to shut doors, and over something so stupid as walking around in a facking station. Add this to the problems with the existing game that you're essentially ignoring to implement some frippery, and you've got a recipe for bad. I advocate the conservative route, if only because safe growth is guaranteed growth. I remember 2003; who wants to jeopardize what we've already become?
As to fixing POS combat: it all comes down to sovereignty requirements. They're the linchpin that keep it between untenable zergfest and unending bore.

So what will we be able to do with ambulation thats so cool?
Visit the market to get the spread sheet rather then just clicking the tab?
Abuse your own clones in 3d?
Shake hands with the crew?
I do bet that add one thing that will make ambulation 'worth' it to the vets, and thats the ability to look outside and see if the station is camped.
I suppose that the RP folks will think its spiffy that they can all sit together with their mostly identical avatars, but it doesn't add anything for most players.

Even if CCP make some terrible business decisions (nerf profit!), and lose half their subscriber base, 100,000 accounts paying $15/mo is a considerable asset; as is the huge TQ server. Maybe they could sell it to SOE!
Still, enough words of comfort. Regardless of what we say in this thread, the decision has been made; they are committed to at least trying Ambulation. Let's approach it with an open mind. All this doomsaying befreo we even have an idea of what it's going to look like is completely premature. Yes, we'll be beta-testing Ambulation for CCP. I say: good. No plan of action survives contact with the enemy; no beta product survives release-testing unscathed. Who better than the scammers, gankers, pirates, spies, market riggers, mercenaries, assassins, smugglers, carebears and miners of EvE to find flaws and loopholes? And once the interface has survived the twin cleansing flames of exploit-monkeys and forum whining, it'll be ready for them to start adding content. Real content. And if we're lucky, they will have the sense to integrate player content and make it a central part of the AmbulationEvE experience, just as it is in SpaceshipEvE. Then: Win

You and I sir have very different definitions of 'incredible'.
-Players will also be able to walk around the interior of their own ships. -Players will have access to a huge variety of clothing and accessories to wear on their characters and be able to swap between as many different outfits as they care to buy. -Venues are simply stores within the game where players will be able to socialize, browse, shop, and gamble. -In addition to gambling, there will be a variety of liquor and other alcoholic beverages to drink and tobacco to smoke. -There will be a number of places for your new avatars to walk around and strut their stuff. First, corporations will be getting meeting rooms. -Potential applicants can come and meet with current corporation members. Also, an NPC can be set up with simple corporation information and answers to commonly asked questions in case no one is handy to talk to them.
Yes, I do find them to be incredible features. But let's just hope CCP will allow players such as yourself to 'hit the market tab and see all of what I'm looking for' with no interaction at all with the new Ambulation features. -----

Many people love this game for its player driven market. Ambulation adds to this aspect of the game as you can put up a shop thus gaining visibility on the market. You could also use this space of yours to present tasty contracts for people instead of having spam the local ALL THE TIME.

Umm ok? I enjoy fluff, this isn't bad, but its fluff.
Quote: -Players will have access to a huge variety of clothing and accessories to wear on their characters and be able to swap between as many different outfits as they care to buy.
Well you are Gallente so I understand why new clothes is so exciting to you ;)
Quote: -Venues are simply stores within the game where players will be able to socialize, browse, shop, and gamble.
Graphical IRC got it.
Quote: -In addition to gambling, there will be a variety of liquor and other alcoholic beverages to drink and tobacco to smoke.
As soon as getting drunk in game gives me a buzz rl, let me know, so far at best it makes your screen get fuzzy.
Quote: -There will be a number of places for your new avatars to walk around and strut their stuff. First, corporations will be getting meeting rooms.
So instead of inviting people to a chat channel we can all fly to the same station and see 3d avatars while being in a chat channel. Fine for dramatic effect, but with the size of eve, they better put teleporters in the station. No one wants to go 30 jumps for an 'in real fake life' meeting when they can just use chat unless you are really into your roleplaying.
Quote: -Potential applicants can come and meet with current corporation members. Also, an NPC can be set up with simple corporation information and answers to commonly asked questions in case no one is handy to talk to them.
Well maybe fine for empire corps, useless for 0.0 for obvious reasons, and again, chat + avatar is still just chat.
Quote: Yes, I do find them to be incredible features. But let's just hope CCP will allow players such as yourself to 'hit the market tab and see all of what I'm looking for' with no interaction at all with the new Ambulation features.
Amen to that. CCP isn't adding 'incredible features' they are adding features in about every OTHER mmo out there. Great, if it makes you happy but don't expect people who like eve for what is it now to really care that much. It might be a cute novelty, maybe at some point it will be truly part of the game itself beyond fluff, but as what I enjoy in game seems to be broken (fleet 0.0 warfare) don't expect people like me to cheer that the 1000's of eve ******* players will now get to add a thong to their character.
There is a 2+ year old video showing planetary landings and combat in eve. Don't get excited about anything until it happens here, and then assume its going to be less than you hoped.
I don't have anything per say 'against' ambulation, but I am rather perturbed with the current drive for more players when the existing hardware (upgraded many times since I first joined) is choking under the current load. I know we have had more blogs about that, but you will have to forgive me if I don't believe anything will change until I see it, we have all been down that road before.
Edit: I found a new censored word, I wonder how many can guess what it was?

It will add nothing to the game. As most ambulation proponents have pointed out, as a defense, it will be completely optional.
This means:
That pimpz0r store you spent hours setting up? I just bought an item from it when I was 4 hops over. I don't even know your store exists. At this point your store is functionally identical to playing the sims single player.
Oh and if I wanted to use your store rather than the market I would have to spend extra time walking to your store. This is a stated fact on record by CCP. Buying from your ambulation store will take more time. Game theory dictates that the vast majority will not use it for that one reason alone.
Corp meeting hall:
Currently we have TS or Vent or whatever you use. It allows me to talk to people in my corp from anywhere in the galaxy. We had a corp meeting the other day. I was running missions during it. Everyone in the meeting was scattered across the galaxy.
Why would anyone use the corp meeting hall? You'd all have to assemble somewhere. You couldn't do anything during the meeting. Where is the upside?
Clothing:
Until one can customize their ship's appearance clothing is a waste of resources.
It won't cause lag or problems:
Last week we saw the server crashing due to setting a station as your capital. If ambulation is going to talk to the database it can bring the server down.
People will use it for 2 weeks and then it will languish. It's optional and any action within ambulation will take more time because you have to walk there. Once again this is a stated fact by CCP. Thus it will be more profitable to not use it. You'll be able to accomplish more if you don't use.

I was disappointed, most of the pro-ambulation crowd seemed to be posting with alts and it would have become real easy to point out that pro-ambulation was a troll. Then you post anti-ambulation with an alt. *pop* goes my bubble.
Personally I see ambulation as a vast excuse to catch the Second Life bus, there's no specific reason why it would be good, any socialisations would be limited to being in the same fricking station (y'know, physical limitations of being there 'in person' so to speak). This would create knock-on effects for what happens if all of Jita decides to 'sit' in the same 'room', and what a similar 'room' in a particularly unpopular system would be like.
There's no actual need for it, so there has to be another motivation. Creating a 'physical' layer to the API? Creating an isk sink in pink boxers and barker loungers? Allowing advertisers in to the stations?
I'm not convinced by the 'war room' argument because if it was needed, we'd better have a better fleet interface than 'need armour' buttons. Casino's could be a decent isk sink, but the day that someone messes up the coding and it starts paying out...well, either the casino would need to be player capped, or the market will crash a lot harder than it is with the isk sellers flashing wad around.
Nah, not at all convinced by ambulation because it's the big plastic mouse ears option for a ferrari.
Some things it would be lovely to see would be;
Factional warfare Some movement in the political side of things, such as the sec status of empire and low changing slightly as the factions duke it out. Maybe the occasional planetary bombardment by an 'omigod' fleet of titans rather than the factions skulking around in deadspace. More 'events'. More spanners in the works from the NPCs. Spreading out the COSMOS agents, maybe making plexes escalate so they can't be farmed as easily, changing the respawn counters on plexes to make them less predictable.

I don't have a problem with Ambulation itself.
My problem is that I'd rather see the resources used to fix existing problems and make updates that actually affect the usability and playability of the game. Fix the drone bugs, give us a better drone interface, get us some proper drone regoin faction loot, etc.
CCP's argument is that they have a seperate group working on bugs vs a group working on Ambulation. Sorry, that isn't a valid argument.
Instead of hiring more DBAs to help work on database issues, you hire people to draw arms and legs.
Instead of hiring coders to fix existing bugs, you hire people to draw a conference table and hallways.

This is primarily a game of harsh realities, both in terms of space combat AND economics. Edited by: Cadela Fria on 17/09/2007 22:25:11 Lots of people seem to be extremely good critics towards anything new, and unfortunately it's usually those who scream and yell the loudest on these god forsaken forums. I read many a posts saying "This is just fluff", "This wont add to my gameplay", "Ambulation brings nothing new", "It's a waste of time", "It will lag the server", "They should focus on fixing lag instead" and rabble rabble rabble.
Fluff -> Surely every new thing added to the basics of the game, is just fluff by the logic used in this thread..capital ships are fluff. They're combat ships just on a bigger scale, or a just a big hauler..nothing new, just fluff to make people go "ooooooh shiny".
Same thing with outposts. You could already get your own stations as it were, they're called conquerable stations - But now you get to build your own, which by the way, doesn't look half as cool as the pre-built ones.
Won't add to my gameplay -> Well, luckily, there's more people then you playing the game and I bet you, a portion of them, disagree with you and thus where you see irritation and fluff, others see oppertunities and fun.
It's a shame when people pass judgement on things they haven't even tried yet or are just inherently critical towards because it goes outside of what they're used to in their game.
It will lag the server -> Ambulation will be done on seperate servers from the main game server and thus have no impact on the flow of "regular space". You would know this if you had taken the time to study this project rather then just hating it right off the bat.
They should be focusing on fixing lag -> They are though...It's odd when people say this, because fact of the matter is, they already are focusing their efforts on fixing lag..it's be stated, re-stated, re-printed and stated again that performance is their primary focus.
Anything else is just not true.
I for one am looking forward to it..This is still a MMORPG in space with a background story, cultural elements etc, so this is just another evolving step in the universe of EVE that I am personally welcoming.

Ambulation will:
Add variety to the gameplay, a glorified 3D chat it may be, but it does add new features to the gameplay as it gives you things to do.
Add more depth to Eve. I'm a trader and a miner, I spend alot of my time in stations looking through 2D menus, which in itself is always a hollow experience.
Probably assist CCP to direct and finally release planetary flight in a better form, as boarding space stations/boarding planets share similar concepts, and CCP are no doubt experimenting with the whole idea and seeing how it will work with players. Small steps first for such a large and requested feature, planetary flight will be here one day, surely.
Ambulation will not:
Ruin the game, because everytime you dock a station, you're essentially doing what Ambulation will allow you to do, only it makes it more interesting.
Eve tries to cater for all it's players, we all want different things from Eve. -----

This applies equally to people who insist that it will be orgasmically fun and will win everyone over with rainbows and pancakes and angel choirs.
First let me say that I'm not against it. I think it's dumb, and I sense the potential for putting the current gameplay (which I enjoy greatly) at risk, but if it makes people happy (and if all those other problems people mention do get fixed as well) then I'm all for it.
But remember, it'll be new code. You'll be paying to beta test. Half of you people taking the fanboi approach will be threatening to quit in a couple months because you can't get your store to look the way you imagined it when you assumed everything would be perfect.
And new code = new bugs. Even if it's on different servers, there have to be points of interface between the two systems. Those will be buggy, as all software is. Those bugs will very likely at some point/on some level affect even those of us who want nothing to do with ambulation.
And in 6 months, if the nay-sayers are right and the fun wears off for most players, will you be griping to CCP that they should make station-walking mandatory because you're frustrated that no one comes to your store? Will CCP force us out of our ships, despite insisting NOW that it will be optional?
I'm not a hater, and I hope you get the pancakes and angel choirs and chocolate rainbows that you want. As long as it doesn't change the current gameplay into something I didn't sign on for.
