Instead of 'EvE Online' this game should get new name 'EvE Offline'. At least when you see the name of the game you know what to expect.
Now based on game name I somehow foolishly expected that this is the game you can play online ==================================================

Yes. But, the problem is their nifty SQL server fails over every now and then for no reason.

It's just aggravating because I generally don't get a lot of time to play. And when I do it seems to crash. Honestly makes me want to move on to another game and cancel my subscription. Bothers me to pay for it (now that this happens so frequently).
and yes they delete the thread because they don't want potential subscribers to read statements like the above.
Look at me! I'm starting to turn into one of the many "disgruntles"...

failover reliability
Automatically switching to a redundant or standby server, system, or network upon the failure or abnormal termination of the currently-active server, system, or network (a "hot standby" or "warm standby"). Failover happens without human intervention. This feature is usually built-in to expensive systems which must be available continuously.

So a week ago I decided I'd give it another go... did I just choose two really bad weeks, or is eve always like this?

Let's see what excuses they make this time for petitioned ship losses. During the round of crashes a few days ago one of my corpmates ship loss petition was rejected because they said he was online at the time of the loss and there were NO server issues at that time!!! Maybe we could take up a collection to help CCP hire more PR people? Then we could get more imaginative lack-of-service messages that "socket is closed" or "database failover." How about "the socket is closed because it's overflowing with the fetid, decaying remains of our database, whose inadequate capacity and performance just caused our service to explode like a purulent zit into a bathroom mirror"?
Or something like that.

For that you are pretty clueless though. MySQL isn't the same as MS SQL and the former, which is widely regarded as a glorified SQL interface to the file system (rather than a database), is usually more stable than EVE's database even ...
isn't it funny how some people advocate both GTC<=>ISK trades and EVE being superior due to its cruelty and costly losses, when they use the former to circumvent the latter?

Eve was always very famous for beign pretty stable, other then in-game lag servers were always very good, except some bug after patches etc...
I just want to point out that i used to host some "ultima online" free servers, and if i had a similar "quality" of service, beign unable to sustain the users people would have just sayed me "get killed" not paying me like i do for you with 4 different account without using a single GTC but all with my damn credit card.
I understand that **** happens, but when **** happens you find a way for cleaning, and i the **** hit the fan you take someone else too with you on the cleaning.
I would realy like to hear a "sorry" or a single apologise about this, remember that is a CCP mistake, not users mistake, we just want to play this game we pay for.

I'm a developer as well. MySQL wouldn't be able to handle something the size as EVE (I sometimes have trouble getting MySQL working correctly with something 1% the size of eve) but Oracle, IMO, would work much better than MSSQL, unless they're dependant on MSSQL-specific functions.

The really alarming thing is that for at least 2 weeks we have now constant daily database failures. And obviously NO ONE seems to know where these failures come from and how to avoid them. Not the guys at CCP nor the external 'experts'. I know that database issuses can be quite difficult, but seriously, those guys should be at least able to locate the real problem wihin 2 weeks! After all this is a business critical system.
But hey, it is not my business running here I wonder how they will get new subscribers though under these circumstances.

I think it is more problem of incompatible queries than data conversion. Converting Eve to another database system would be probably extremly painful for both CCP and us players. That is not the solution, MSSQL can run very stable too, they must find the problem and fix it.

I want CCP to install a webcam-controlled spanking machine. When the devs screw up they will line up at the machine and frustrated, paying customers will connect and click various buttons to determine the punishment. Low participation might result in just a painful whack. Ow! Higher levels of customer frustration might cause more severe whacks. OWWWWWW! Extreme levels of frustration and anger might cause spikes to extrude from the spanking paddle.
Actually I think at least five spanking machines should be installed: one for the devs who can't seem to fix years-old bugs and write new features full of new bugs, one for the QA staff who must be wondering what "QA" means, one for the operations staff who are probably at fault in at least some of these incidents, one for the GMs who deny petitions for clearcut losses suffered during cluster bogs and crashes, and one for the clueless executives who allow all this to happen.
Let the spankings begin.

You CAN NOT take a chill pill when there have been already 10 server deaths, when you have logged into a Jita with 400 ppl with 1-2 min lag - who knows Jita, knows that this is not normal, and when you are freaked out because you do not know if you did lose that 1b isk or if the server logs will show something, because they are too ******* stupid to understand that most of the ppl want a EVE that works, not 20 new T2 ships and ambulation.

CCP offers no compensation for these crashes and interruptions of our game play. They even refuse to accept responsibility in most cases from I read sometimes. It's like paying for gasoline that you just pumped onto the ground. Useless and wasted and there is nothing anyone is going to do about it. Time gone. Money gone. Simple, by keeping discussions such as this limited to hidden deep inside the forums, and not giving a hint about any current problems on the front page or any "official" news.
This way, they can get new players thinking this is just normal scheduled downtime :)
$15, please! Thank you!
P.S. I'm not against CCP, IMO They're goind a great job, at least from what I can tell. At least in this game they can fix the problem right away rather than certain other games where you will have to wait for someone to wake up and go to work before it's fixed.

Lol. Next time read the EUAL huh? It explicitly says if the server crashed its not their fault. By playing the game yuo agreee in a very legaly binding way.
So please just shut up or GTFO
That prevents you from sue-ing them on account of server problems, but it doesn't prevent many ppl canceling their accounts because it is a ******* waste of time trying to play - emphasis on trying. So please ... learn to read after you STFU.

If this type of service continues I'll be quiting forever. But a show of force by the players like what you are suggesting is just what's needed to get the point across the CCP. We all know that there will be problems from time to time. But this has gotten out of hand.
We should set a date for a 2 week "no login" period. CCP seems to be doing it for us already, but we should do it ourselves. I have a number of PS2 games I could play to pass the time. Plus the new TV season starts soon.

That's only partially true as they still have some obligations to fulfill and many EULAs don't hold up in court against a nice little class action lawsuit. BTW, how does it feel to be the last fanboy standing? Well, some people learn sooner, some later, some not at all.

Yes. Its normal for any mmo to have problems. Especially one as advanced as Eve is. But this isn't about normality anymore. Its about principle, and appreciation. Every other mmo I have played since 1998 has at least "shown" thier appreciation for customer patience during unscheduled outages via extended billing, in game items, temporarily increased xp rates, etc...
Except CCP.
Server goes down, you get "its a database issue" or some such other generically produced response. 4 year old issues go unaddressed, while they add more bug ridden things to the game. I'd MUCH rather play the current game in stable condition, than walk in stations watching WoW kiddies emote each other like hormonally overactive ******s.
At the very least, show me that you appreciate my patronage and continued patience by showing me that you truly care about keeping me as a customer. Some small token to prove you value my business would likely go quite far.

They even refuse to accept responsibility in most cases from I read sometimes. It's like paying for gasoline that you just pumped onto the ground. Useless and wasted and there is nothing anyone is going to do about it. Time gone. Money gone. An if this continues I know that I'll be gone too. Hopefully other will follow.
Maybe then a real solution for this problem will be sought out.
Lol. Next time read the EUAL huh? It explicitly says if the server crashed its not their fault. By playing the game yuo agreee in a very legaly binding way.

DT is scheduled, you know when it is and you prepare for it by putting your char safely out of harm's way. What about the FC that lost the battle because of this crap? What about the guy that lost yet another set of T2 heavy drones ? What about the carrier pilot that is now probing down his fighters while in a system with hostiles - or just putting them down to lost ... another 150m down the drain. What about the guy who had a few cans of ore in the belt about to pick them up ? What about the guy who just hit a faction spawn and was about to collect - won't even mention officer. What about the guy that was doing a plex of 7/10 and above and now he lost the chance to a huge ******* pay after 2-3hs of probing like hell. What about the guy that was about to finish his level 4/5, and had looting on the way and because of this his wrecks are now gone.

Me and my corporation (120 account) is going to remove all our subscription plans.
I'm afraid is the only way for demostrating something, i'm sorry, our patience is out, first you have continuous trouble on your servers, and then when people lose "ships" for YOU inability of working on this game i have to read pre-written answrer from your gm with written "We are sorry but nothing was wrong on your loss, maybe is your pc or isp"
Wtf people, the server goes down 2 times in 2 hour and is MY ISP FAULT? or MY PC FAULT? when ppl are unable to give the client any command for 2-3 minutes while everything keep going on the server side??
Crazy.
I hope more people will do something for demostrating we are getting bored, this game is great but the dev side regarding performance is realy lacking any logic, i clearly readed expert people from other MMORPG company pointing out with clarity wich were the problems of the CCP software, and i HOPE in next patch you will fix something, the problem is that are 3 years that you say next patch we fix something, but well i remember that 3 years ago the game was way more fun and stable.

This is the first time i am posting in a "server down" thread. Usually i just let them do their work and hope for the best. However this week my playtime was cut in half by the multitude of server issues that came up(admittedly due to bad timing and luck but meh). If i hear the words "database issue" or "investigate" once again i'll probably jump out of the window.
I am sure CCP and their team do all they can to resolve these problems. However it should be obvious that this problem is a bit more severe than the usual hick-up after patch day. What i feel is a big problem is the lack of information.
After one week of continuing crashed all we know is its something with databases and people work on it. I mean after a week they should be able to at least falsify some potential causes. But no. No word on whats happening or whats the reason the change of hardware during one of the dt's didn't work out. I know its not going faster only because they say they care, but maybe just maybe some customers like me would feel better. Is that a bad thing for you CCP?
I've seen Wrangler personally closing dozens of spam threads about the issues. On the same token he apparently has no time to make an informative(!) post to the community. (not duh server is down or duh server is up - i know that from not being able to log in)
And the fanboi crew spaming "quit or stfu" i can only give you the very same advice. Obviously you like not being able to play. Thats just fine but other people pay for this service and asking for some info about availability and *consistent* server issues is just as common as expecting the cable guy to set up your tv correctly after you paid him. And no at this point i am not leaving and you can't have my stuff.

isn't it funny how some people advocate both GTC<=>ISK trades and EVE being superior due to its cruelty and costly losses, when they use the former to circumvent the latter?

We all like the game but like going work, you can be the smartest and hardest worker on the team, but if you not dependable you lose the job. That sums up this situation pretty well. I am wondering,
the last 2 weeks we have seen eve lockup and crash on random, it more or less happens with every patch but this one is bad. I am wondering why this happens? We pay to play.... And "december you will be able to walk around the statation in "First Person" style. I would much more like a game that runs smooth every day every seacond.
I an mot critisising CCP, I am wondering why this stuff happens, more and more people are getting sad, due to the crashes, losses of items.....
And we all love the game that is why we are still here, due to skillpoints vs time... But worsning lag, and the "Wating time" and the unexplanable Session change.. don't update, Upgrade all players would then Love ccp.
Am I the only one wondering about this ?

You sound so fuc#ing bright that you could be named as official CCP spokesman. My vote goes for you, you actually sound more coherent than most of their staff.
You know I can't help but think this person may well be an ALT of one of the staff, and if he/she is then maybe they should be given the job of actually letting us the paying customers know what is really going on.

Then I find the server crashed again...before I could change to a week long skill.
How on earth can players deal with this, other then to basicly stop playing?
This is getting kind of insane, use a spare DB cluster, and never touch the current one again. Then get a new one flown over, anything is better then this week with regard to usability! The new cluster can get a nice warm welcome by having an all 0.0 space happening again for two days!
Realy, the current level of service is not acceptable!

Lol I wish. Then id have sexy Jovian Frigs all over the place :P
No I am not an alt but I am not some whiny n00b who doesnt say a good word about CCP and then makes a threadnought when TQ crashes

Now go away and lick some boots or something.
isn't it funny how some people advocate both GTC<=>ISK trades and EVE being superior due to its cruelty and costly losses, when they use the former to circumvent the latter?

Why stop at sacking? Why not have them Evecast the Viking-style execution of the offenders in the back parking lot? Or tossing them into a nearby lava pool? Now THAT would be entertaining and would go a long way to assuaging our frustration.

Edited by: Sky Marshal on 15/09/2007 14:28:57 Indeed, it would be good if CCP can compensate all players by offer few hours or one day of free play in our subscription, only in situations where crashs are really frequent and long.
As we can understand that a world like EvE is difficult to maintain online constantly, CCP must understand that it is always difficult to pay for hours of game that we can't profit, same if skill still works.
Also, I lose one day 75M of credits because a crash happens at the moment that I retrieve the wreck of a big NPC convoy. As 75M is not nothing for me (this would save me 4 hours of farming), this is always annoying...
This week, there was probably seven crashs of one of two hours nearly, and I will probably lose actualy a few skill time as I have one skill nearly complete.
So yes, a small compensation would be very appreciated by everyone.

It happened. I saw screenshots!

I like the way they put it:
Quote: Tranquility has encountered a database issue, we are working on getting the server back up as soon as possible.
As if you were watching a train wreck from a mile away. "The train encountered an automobile on the track. We're working on clearing the ensuing wreckage."
I'm going to log on and set a long skill since this apparently is going to go on and on and on. Yes, I know, patch, set a long skill, etc. However the patch was on Tuesday, and you have to train up new skills sometime. I thought several days in I could go ahead and work on some short stuff I need. How silly of me.
Maybe they'll give us an "Its safe to train short duration skills again!" message. Someday.

isn't it funny how some people advocate both GTC<=>ISK trades and EVE being superior due to its cruelty and costly losses, when they use the former to circumvent the latter?

That is just a lie and simply wrong.
Look at stock exchanges for example, they have 100 times more daily transactions in their databases. They MUST NOT faily under any circumstances and they don't fail. Furthermore they don't spend that much more money on hardware - they just have the right software. Or look at all those banks. Their load is MUCH higher and they work perfectly without any downtime. Actually everything less than 99.999% availability is not acceptable for them.
How do they achieve this? They have the proper software for that.
I wouldn't mind if CCP would throw out all the content designers for ambulation and new missions and new 3d models and invest the money to move their stuff over to a solid database.
Also what use is it to invest millions into advertisements when your servers crashes all the time? That is just wasted money and has no use at all.

Man you have no idea do you. Second Life is sharded to the ****house, just that they use a method of interconnecting the shards.

LOL - you realise that Tranquility is constructed the same way right? Jita is it's own "shard" or Node that are all interctonnected to crete the cluster. I have never played second life myself so can't realy speak about it but I know thats how TQ is run.

Just that the second life guys seem to have a clue how to interconnect them so one node doesn't tear the whole system down :) Thanks for pointing that out to us, Lothros!

How is this system different from other large-scale MMOs that are up and running consistently right now?
Is there any other MMO running 35000 simultaneously logged users on one server? Or 250000 subscribers on one server?
Why does it have to be an MMO? How about a credit card clearing house processing point of sale transactions from hundreds of thousands of terminals? How about ATM networks? How about the floor systems of securities exchanges? How about quotation systems (we had 7000 computers and about 70K terminals in one network, pre-PC, pre-LAN, with subsecond response and no downtime allowed during market hours)? How about networks of lottery ticket machines? How about eBay? How about PayPal? There must be lots of very large, very active networks where CCP's track record would get the devs, the QA staff, the ops people, the managers and the executives not just fired, but banned for life from the industry.
Just ask yourself whether this outage record and record of lost/misplaced items would be acceptable in, say, your bank's ATM operation or online account access and account maintenance. It's "just a game?" No, it's a paid service like many others. It is just unregulated and has little good competition at the moment. The latter is likely to change in the next year or two.
