It think the intended purpose of the ship is right in its description/bonuses. It is designed to jump to a remote belt, deploy some barges/exhumers, clone in the pilots, go into industrial mode, and start mining. It will give the bonuses to the miners through the links, pull in the ore with the tractor, compress it, and stickpile the compressed ore. The compressed ore is then put either in the hold, and jumped back to the site of manufacturing, or put in a hauler and taken back. The advantage is not just the slightly better use of the links, but the lack of the need for haulers. Put these hauler characters in barges and see the real advantage.
Now, this is the intended purpose. Whether it is used in this matter, is up to the pilot.

I in no way said it would work, I was just stating the intended purpose, which was asked.

I think this will be the last word in ninja mining. Sneak in a recon ship to dead end of space cyno some people in and mine like crazy.

It could work if rorq could cloak when she's in industrial mode. But imagine that whine.

Someone will see your presence on the map and come check it out.
Originally by: Lord DarkStar you can have a pos in low sec empire, have all the ore you want compressed in pos or station hangers, transport it to the capital, have it compress till its full of veld or scordite or whatever you want, jump to a 0.0 refining stations and there you go,or a pos refinery ...
Because I'm going to risk moving the slowest ship in the game without a jump drive, moving trit worth a fraction of the ship's value to low-sec... ---- AUS Corp Lead Megalomanic EVE Automated Influence Map: Keeping Down The Clone Business Since 2007AD |

Or you use it deep in your alliance territory.
Lock the system bring in a fleet for defence, scouting and as many hulks as you can in Carriers and Moms as well as the Rorqual.
Even if the Rorqual can only tractor in one belt at a time, it will give bonus to all the Hulks in the system.
Put the rorqual in the Wing Commander and have defence pilots in Squad leaders and you can boost dozens of Hulks at the same time. Clean a system in a matter of Hours of every roid.
Thats how I see it used :)
This is especially good for systems you haven't got an Outpost near.

In a pos.

I appreciate all the responses from players and I too see this used in an OP with a full defense support group at the belt. Now I would like an answer from CCP as to how they intended it to be used. I can't see CCP saying this needs to sit at a POS. If that is the case WTH are the tractors for. And something this size should not be easily take out by a roaming gang of 10 or 15 pilots. That's absurd. Come on CCP gives up some help here. It really sucks when you guys sit around silent.

The ONLY way to defend a 0.0 mining op is to lock down the system by placing your defense gang on the gate with a large bubble. Sitting a capital, which will take anywhere up to a minute to align out, in a belt, is idiocy. Now matter how good you think your "defense group" is, it isn't.

It's not for CCP to tell you how to use anything. You're meant to decide how to do it.

And why not? These things are meant to be well-protected. That means a locked down system, or a POS and a network of scouts.

They told me I was not using my carrier they way they intended so explain to me again why they can't tell me how they intended the Rorqual to be used?

So I agree on the locked down system. done that. What I want to know is if you intenede this thing to sit at a POS, why did they add Capital Tractor beems and why are they talking about making gang bonuses only afect the grid you are on?
Some of your comments don't hold water when all the facts from CCP are on the table. Last why can;t CCP speak up about this instead of us reading their minds?

This is very true. That's why this thing needs some more tinkering. Hell a well fit hulk is a formadable foe, this thing shoudl be too. It shoudl take a capital ship or at least 20 ships to take this out. (hey I can dream can't I)
Besides, there are only two types of Rorqual pilots... Those that have been ganked, and those that WILL be ganked

Ya this seems to make far more sense than a 2B capital ship. I really like the idea of an industrial cap ship. This thing would make an incredible empire/0.0 supply ship if it could go into high sec like a freighter, but as it stands it seems fairly useless. And if the target audience for it is a large alliance which will put one pilot in it for a locked down mining op then it seems like a lot of dev effort for such a small scale use.

After carefully going over the calculation for a maxed out hulk with a rouq in a gang ninja mining, it turns out 1 hulk roughly makes 40mill per hour, and it takes nearly 3.2 hours to fill a Roq with Ark...
so that is about 600mill for an entire ninja op.
Now when you factor in: 0.0, hostiles everywhere + extra scout support and or carrier support and fuel bills, fielding 4 hulks in a belt with a bs tanker or using the roq to tank...
You field nearly 3 bill min of ships, for 600 mill after 3 hours if hoping someone and there gang of friends doesn't spot you in 0.0..?!
This isnt a whine, it is just the ship is well rubish I can not see even hardcore miners using it, that is if people mine anymore

So, are you suggesting that a group deploying a Rorqual should earn enough in one three-hour mining session to pay for the ship itself? Because that is probably NOT the right way to think when using the ship. Of course, if you can string together 5 such successful ops, you have a nice sum as a result and have probably paid for the ship.
I still think that this ship has definite plusses, especially if you can find a nice system with certain qualities. I can't wait to deploy one myself, as I just became Rorqual-capable yesterday.

I have decided there are two types or Rorqual pilots. Those who have lost their rorqual and those that will. I'm am now OK with that. Then agian there is the ORCA?
