Edited by: Karbowiak on 19/09/2007 09:42:52 Hey everyone..
My idea is simply, boost the torpedoes so they will be more effective in pvp. The idea is that, when torps blow up they throw out that huge ring effect, but atm its only for show - so why not give the torps a, "smartbomb" effect.
Like if the torp itself hits the target for 500 damage, it would deal a smartbomb effect of 10% in a radious of 10km.. So in this case all sorrounding ships within 10km would be hit by 50dmg pr. torp.
or maybe 50% of the torps damage, it should naturally has the same penalites, that bombs has (ie doesnt do a hell of alot damage to smaller targets) since Torpedoes is mainly a battleship counter weapon..
Ideally it would bring Ravens back into pvp and would make them feared (who the hell wouldn't "scream" if they saw 6 Ravens shoot torps into a huge battleship group? with that "smartbomb effect"?)
Maybe its too overpowered i dont know, but its an idea! :)

I'd actually agree with this.
Seems daft to me that things explode and dont do any damage to anything else around it.
Even if its a small amount of extra damage it would be much more realistic.. it would stop blobbing and make people think a bit more about where they are located in space in relation to other ships.
Only problem with this is that it might be over powerd against drones... but if you made this blast effect virtually useless against sheilds but more effective against armor and even more effective against structure then maybe it wont be so bad. And maybe it would nerf gallante just that little bit.
Unfortunatly I think this would never happen though, CCP's servers can barley hand a few hundred people in the same grid let alone calculating all that extra damage. I think it would go against their "6 speed improvments to every new features" initiative.

Thats why it should be working like bombs are working..
so drones would only get 0.1-2 dmg pr. torp that hits. And about the CCP server issue, i dont think the servers are that bad, i mean they handle everything quite nice tbh. even in systems with +400 people it runs desent.. :)

No. It doesn't. Last time I was in a local with 300+ it was laggy as hell (Assuming there's combat going on and not just sitting at station doing trading)

back in the old day had torps area effect, but at that time you could load them into standard lauchers so you could have them on frigs and you sometimes then blow yourself up in the process.
But it could be a good idea to put into the game again, so the raven can be used for real in pvp again.

I actually agree with this as well - it makes no sense to me torps explode with that dramatic AoE looking explosion, and do no AoE damage at all.
Perhaps, if the server could handle it, have it gradually decrease in damage, IE:
> Ground Zero [GZ] (Where it hits) takes the most damage. > 5KM from GZ takes 50% damage > 10KM from GZ takes 25% damage > 15KM from GZ takes 12% damage > 17KM from GZ takes 6% damage > 20KM from GZ takes 3% damage > nothing after 20KM takes damage. Numbers are also just to show what I mean, can be changed of course - but if your going for more realistic thats the way to do it.
And yes, this would be over-powered against drones, any drones. Your drones attacking them could get hit, their drones attacking you if your in close range could get hit, you could hit your allies (Meaning 20KM might be to far out to take damage? dunno).

Well, it should all be made with the effect that bombs has atm..
That if its over xxx in signature it gets full damage, less than xxx in signature its gets lower and lower damage.. And explosion rate should be a determinating factor aswell..
But if it got into the game again, Ravens would again be seen in PVP as with Torps. Since if they got the AoE effect - they could potentially be used to breakup huge battleship blob fleets
Not to mention those mission runners would probably be happy about it aswell

Nerf Caldari?, why?.. The only viable t1 pvp ship they have is the Rokh.. the rest plainly sucks ass, and even most of their T2 ships sucks ass for pvp aswell.
Giving them a boost to the torpedoes reinstates the Raven into pvp service again, bigtime even. At the moment Amarr is ass to pvp with really, Minmatar has always been a SP heavy race, so that leaves us wit ha no brainer for pvp - and thats Gallente.
If Caldari got their torpedoes boosted in this way, it would effectively put the Raven up again as a feared boat in big numbers.

But...
It would hit yourself also if you within the blast radius
Cant have something for nothing
*thinks about his gankathron doing 1.3k dps + an extra 100/200 dps from the ravens own torps on himself ;)

I'll agree to adding a new Torp ammo type that does AoE, but not making it a standard feature. Why? Think Jita + Torp Raven for about 5 seconds and the complications should start adding up.
Torps had AoE a long time ago, they actually took it out because it was so easy to abuse in empire. Should be fine out in 0.0 though. -------------------------------------------------- ICE Blueprint Sales FIRST!! -Yipsilanti Pfft. Never such a thing as a "last chance". ;) -Rauth |

So basically go back splash damage and all the BS that brought with it?
Only if you do it right and make special torps that splash and leave the rest as is.

Dude get real, they have nice pvp ships
Raven, Drake, Eagel, and so on, you just need to be in a gang for it to wrok well.
missiles allways hit for full dam, and a nice setup raven will kill anything.
Amarr rocks in pvp as well. min is great, but its gallante that sucks.
cuse you need to be close to win, if your not you die.

And while we're at it..Give us Gallente tiny drones which have 0.1 m3 volume, which we can launch and send after other ships.. They should have same speed as torpedo, and when/if it reach the target ship it should explode and give splash damage to all ships in a radius of 10 km.
GREAT idea!

Promblem with torps having small smartbomb effect is with CONCORD. They are rather trigger happy and NPC's sit sometimes pretty near to things you are not supposed to gank. Like warp gates in missions. Or 'visitors' in your missions. Getting CONCORDED by smartbombing cloaked ship is exploit only if they are cloaked near you, if they are uncloaked and you apply AoE on them then it's your own fault and they get rather nice pile of nice loot.

I would suggest making the AoE torps a 0.0 only thing like interdictor bubbles. That would solve a lot of problems with the idea and I really like it.
On the other hand I would much more like a fast type of cruise missiles that are able to actually go after nano ships.

Cool down. There is no need to add aoe to all existet torps. Just get new (0.0 space) torpedos with AOE. 10 km with same damage as other tors. Fast ships still will get less damage cause of epl velosety and signature. But again it will be one more ( like smart bombs / bombs/ carriers ecm etc) new thing what force ppl to not blob :). and yeah ravens will become primery :)

...or we can just un-nerf javelin torps and rage torps Raven with Rage torps and target painter drones 4tw pre rev issue! Any blasterthron pilot running into Tannk CEO would have a very bad day
And yes, area of effect torps would be cool, only for use in 0.0 -like bombs and dictorbubbles.

I think it's a great idea. Smartbombs exist in empire, but you need to be careful with them - same here. Be careful with what you arm your ship with or pay the consequences. It would definitely add a twist to combat, "better pull those drones back or your buddy will wiped them all out!"
I'm all for things that add flare and strategy to this game, it seems like the last year we've been going backward into a all ships do the same things with different graphics lull...

You are not only one who has the same ffealing about that and they call that ballance :). Still think the torps like this will be nice in game ( so long not overpowered) just imagine FC screaming on TS. : "Jump trough the gate and spread out so fast as you can cause they have 4 ravens in gang. those 4 are primery :) "
+ you need consider that not only enemy ships can be blow by gang buddy, so that mean you will need a good raven pilot in the gang who can analizing what he is doing or he probebly can fu.. up own gang with just shooting like crazy with those things :).
