if anything people who play eve have more of a life than other MMOG players.. the only grind is for gear in this game (as opposed to gridning for both char advancement and gear) -----------------------------------

While that may be true, to a certain extent, you're missing the fact that in EVE you most often need to stay online for longer periods of time to do something interesting. 0.0 roaming gangs are a prime example of this, you really can't afford to suddenly log out or you'll have to pull your ship out of hostile space the next day. I guess it comes with EVE being a game that rewards teamwork more than your average MMO.

Edited by: Zosana on 07/10/2007 02:35:26 I failed my last semester due to playing far too much \o/, and not liking what I was studying. After that I took a long break from eve and now everything is cool and under control.
As for evers having no life, well it depends really. Only you can dictate how much, if at all, you play.

Im sure top alliance leaders have no life, seem slike a lot of horse crap to deal with.
Here is a story said alliance is attacking a station/POS in another said alliance territory. Mind you it's very late and it's the work week, **** is really hitting the fan and the alliance leader gave his number out to director's saying if something serious happens call him.
To round up the story it's 3 in the morning he receives a phone call and actually gets up comes on vent and starts giving directives and such, mind you he has to get up for work in about 3 hours and he went ot bed at 12:00. So ya some players have no lifes outside of EvE.
As for me im married, have a 2 month old boy and work a fair bit but i do play some EvE more then my fair share i will add.
But by no means do i want to get a phone call saying "yo hells log on our POS is going down" lol TBH who the **** cares.

I've been studying computer science for a an eternity, but didn't sign up for the final exams, because after surviving the first semesters and passing those exams, we had no time limits before starting with the final exams and finishing it. So instead of focussing on finishing it, I kept doing, what seemed most interesting to me, like visiting interesting lectures that weren't mandantory just for fun or playing games like EVE. About 2 years ago the university started to charge money, which I couldn't pay this year, so game over.
Planning to get some qualifications now to get a job e.g. as system- or network admin somewhere, just lack the iskies aehm $$ at the moment for that.

Edited by: Cylanthia on 07/10/2007 11:40:28 Edited by: Cylanthia on 07/10/2007 11:38:48 Yeah, I have a life. I get up each morning and go to work. I have a partner. I socialise with friends at the weekend just like any "normal" person. EVE is a game to me, plain and simple. I've always played computer games ever since I was a kid and I have no intention of stopping as they are an essential part of my relaxation and escapism from the daily grind that is real life. The beauty of EVE for me is that it can be made to fit in around my life. All I have to do if I'm busy is log in once in a while and change skills and my character continues to progress even if I can't get online so it's perfect for someone like me.
The only annoying thing is from time to time I get other people in game who don't have jobs or a real "life" accusing me of a lack of dedication. Seriously, what does it actually matter if a POS goes down of if an alliance takes over an area? It's internet space ships FFS!

I always choose social activites over EVE, it's just having that choice isn't a regular thing
I work part-time in the evenings too, so often miss them anyway, but have plenty of time left for EVE
I almost completely failed college because of EVE infact (well, laziness in general too), but luckily when I took a 2 year break I managed to get an ICT qualification out of the way... I just lost 35mil SP doing it -----

I don't really give a **** what others think of me and/or my hobbies, particularly the people who seem to think that life is a competition and the winner is measured by amount of wealth and social status gained.

I *used* to have a life, but then my friends and I graduated high school. Now everyone's too busy working or dealing with their families to ever get together (as an example, this is the third weekend in a row my RL plans have fallen through), so the last nine years have utterly sucked. This is one reason why EVE was a godsend - it gave me something to fill up the empty hours.

You don't get paid by the government, you get paid by US. The people that actually work for a living and contribute so we can enjoy the benefits of having a decent amount of cash. People like you are the reason taxes are so high.

I moved out of my parents house and into an apartment with my girlfriend at 18 (A few months ago). I work full time, go to school full time. And play EVE when I feel like it.
However now, I usually play Halo 3 with my girlfriend online lol :)
My job sucks, but I earn enough to live comfortably and I'm quite happy. I play EVE maybe 5-10 hours a week.

I got plenty of life - which unfortunately limits the amount of time I get to play EVE. I'm on my last nite in SF now, where I had the best ribs EVER at Oola, along with SWEET meals over 4 days at Foreign Cinema, Town Hall, and the Cliff House restaurants.
And my learning 5 will be done a lil after I get back to Seattle tomorrow - w00t!!

I tend to play eve a lot when I don't have much going on, but when "life" picks up, computer games *Usually* take a back seat.
I actually had a girl tell me once "God! Put that stupid game away and come **** me."
But I was in the middle of a battle for LS-JEP, So I dumped her. No more of that distraction

Im a bit of a tech head, im a database designer (MS Access/SQL) i also fix, and sell PC's. Ive been playing eve since may 2003, and have enjoyed it,
I find it very annoying to stop playing Eve and get on with some work, the thing which I find very irritating about working in computers is that to achieve most tasks it takes so damn long. When im making a database i think to myself, damn, im missing out on playing eve.
Ive decided to give up computing, and ive taken on a part time retail job. My other plan is to complete The Knowledge, and become a london taxi driver.
It is possible for a london taxi driver to make ú400 GBP per day, The Knowledge is a very daunting task that will take me 3 years to complete, when Its done i can earn alot of money, and be completly independant, and not have a stupid boss or manager to answer to.

Job Seeker's Allowance in the UK is simply the cash they pay you to survive whilst you "look for a job." Rent and council tax are paid for you by the government on top of your JSA. On top of that, if you have children, you can actually end up better off in this county than you would be if you got a minimum wage job in a warehouse. How stupid is that?

You really must have no self respect to abuse the benefit system in such a way. Do you not wake up in the morning and think I am a scumbag?
Either way the more you get used to it the more it is going to be a harsh return to reality when the law gets changed. and it ptobably will sooner or later.
Why should people go to work for you so you can sit on your fat lazy ass all day and what about those people who really do need the benefits?
I shall stop now as I have a feeling you are trying to wind people up on purpose.

If by life you mean, working from 9 to 6 everyday and having to travel 4 hours to get to work and home. And that you are so tired from it when you come home and in the weekend so one has almost no strentgh to do anything else in you're life, and when you retire you realize there is so much to do in life.
So when you set out to do this you die from a heart attack.... if that is what you mean with 'life' I prefer Eve thank you very much.

If they could develop a serious boring game like "Pro Football Management and Playing : Online" encompassing all that is football from spitting on the sidelines to gouging out a rival fans eyes, and that other stuff they do... play football, promote teams, everything the whole lot.
Do THAT GAME. Two things.
1. I won't play it. 2. Friday nights in town will be dead (men who prefer football to women apparently do still have a life and are cool). And women will have to stop being overtly hostile to every male they meet, or turn fish eater. Either would be great.
But no... game developers make games like Eve, that actually make other activities, like work, women, friends and booze actually seem less important. Not **** though. **** > Eve. Must try harder.

Of course I do.
Besides hanging out with my gf and other stuff I play this computer game called "Earth 2007". I play a soon to be 30 year old male character.
The graphics is very nice, almost like IRL stuff except there are no space stations in this game, well there is one but only houses three people which do "science" stuff, and you can't get there unless you are very skilled, Lvl V in Space Shuttles and Zero Gravity Theory and they are all rank 8 and in addition, the prereqs is horrible :(
The char of mine owns two vehicles that run on wheels (imagine that, ground based only :D) which he takes to "The Office". The office is a place of work and he deals with computer networks and stuff, which are all wire based.. wierd things indeed.
I can relly recommend it for some escapism.

I heard they had a lot of trouble with that in the beta. Something about an apple, or a meteor strike, depending on which faction you listen to on the forums. |

Edited by: Kolwrath on 11/10/2007 14:31:51 Not much life here. Got out of highschool and realised all my friends from HS were jerks so I dont hang with them. Got out of University and dident make any friends there (shoulda done the residence thing ... oh well I did graduate with zero debt so its a toss up). Got a job in a city and work 9-5. Found its hard to make friends when your stereotyped as an "IT Guy" in the office. I give you an example from IT Crowd: Roy: It's about time you got back it's been all go. Moss: You had a job? Roy: Girl on fifth. Moss: Did you and her, hit it off? Roy: Define, hit it off. Moss: Did she continue talking to you once you'd fixed her computer? Roy: No.
Plus I have no cable, so I just play Eve where as other people would be watching Survivor XXIV Washed Up Celeberty Edition.
Meh my life is no beer comercial (beutifull girls and partying all day at exotic places) but its aint bad. Eve definatly makes it more enjoyable.

Edited by: Mr Bodacious on 11/10/2007 15:05:18 I'm 21, pursuing a career in music education.. my main source of income comes from performing. (lol.. i could probably make better bank flippin burgers, but hey, happiness has no price eh?)
I'm not overweight, though I could probably stand to go to the gym more. I do live with my roommate, I smoke entirely too much pot, I think I may be the only person to actually be addicted to it, though I have realized it and am trying to cut back. (over 18 hours sober! woot!)
Sometimes we all feel like our lives are going nowhere, I think. The scariest part is realizing that one day you might not be playing video games, chillin in your room, and instead you'll be doing "real" work.
Anyways, to the op and anyone else who feels the same as we do: Things get tough sometimes but you're never alone, cause like it or not, Eve is here for you at the very least.. :P
edit: to the guy talking about the blind leading the blind, there is no such thing. Nobody here blindly works day in and day out. Everyone has their reasons for working. Every single person at some point throughout the course of their lives has considered their position in life and "what they are doing". Everyone has their own goals they wish to work for, working is simply a means to achieve those goals.
As for me, I'm in a relationship with a girl for over 3 years now, and I am very much in love with her. The reason I go to school and don't sit at home smoking weed and playing eve all day is her. I want to someday wake up next to her in our own house, with our own cars, etc etc.. you get the idea.
Motivation is what makes everyone go. You are motivated to do something that others don't like. Well, I'll tell you what. It isn't up to anyone else to judge you but yourself. I have my opinions about who you are and what you do but those aren't important. When you wake up one day and ask yourself "Is this what I really want to be doing?" and you can answer it by saying "Playing EVE and mooching off welfare", then more power to you, for you have truly found happiness. As for the rest of us, we will be asking ourselves that every morning as we don our suits and ties and get ready to leave for work.
I won't judge you. So do me a favor, and don't judge me.

If you can live without working then fair enough, good on you. But to via unethical means (IE benefit fraud) is wrong and you deserve to be abused.
Suerly you can see the difference between someone who has earned their money and now does not work and someone who gets money given to them for free from other people that do go to work.
If everyone in the world took the same attitude where would we be?

Steve Hawkings, read my reply, especially the part directed at you.
The people telling you are wrong for what you are doing cannot understand what it is to have a different outlook on life.
However, you also fall into this category for failing to see how they can live the way they do.
Your logic leads me to believe you are a bitter man spurred only by his emotions and impulses, who justifies himself in every way by feeling as though others are inferior for not seeing things your way.
Don't try to get smart with me, either. Like I said, I will not judge the way you lead your life. I will say, however, that your paper-thin facade falls short of being inspiring, and makes you out to be just another guy who takes handouts from the government. (who in turn take it from the ones who work)
And to those who say this man needs to get a job because you're paying for him to live (in the most broad sense of course):
If you don't like paying taxes, do what he does. If you don't want to do what he does, pay taxes. I haven't read all the bullspit but I know someone, somewhere has said "Well, I'm right, and you're wrong, because I pay taxes for you to be unemployed and living."
what is this world we are living in anyway? heh.

Best reply yet, I really dont mean to sound like i presume all others to be inferior, It just amuses me that the" Get a job you waster" people, fail to see that there IS another school of thought regarding the mordern way of life. The way i see it is Working all your life to die at the end of it having wasted it all working sounds very silly, these people speak up for what they have been told all thier lives but many seem incapable of thinking any other way as this has been inprinted on them since day one. All i can say really is i feel sorry for these people for believing everything they have been told and that they will never actually see life for how it is really is as their perceptions have been blurred by the media and other people. I do understand why people choose to work all their lives, i just find it hard to actually see what they gain from it. and it upsets me to see that this is percieved as the way we should live, when in reality we can actually make choices instead of doing what we are told to do.

Originally by: Gossef Well I tend to think that I have a life, but on some occassions I did feel like a complete lazy bum doing absolutely nothing.
During the thing they call RL (or IRL), I'm a Computer Science student, having started the study last year and after a year I only got like half the points I could've/should've gotten...
I enjoy gaming a lot, playing EvE, GW, CIV 4, UT2k4, BF2, etc etc which eats up a lot of my free time. I'm currently on a (at least) one month break from games all together to get my life back together, since I was sleeping really bad and not exactly the amount of hours I need to not be a zombie all day long. During my free time (after studying of course) I tend to read a lot, play badminton and chess, and meet with friends and have a some drinks.
Also a couple months ago I had my coming out and since a few weeks I have a boyfriend, which I sadly can't spend enough time with atm, because of both our schedules. But I hope to improve that asap by working more on my study and less on computergames (so I have more free time in general).
So I'm currently getting my life back on track so I guess I have a life
*in before the sexuality bashing* More power to you for having the courage to come here and say that.
Alot of us can relate to that (well, i didnt come out) and I personally can relate to the feeling of having your life fall apart right before your eyes.
I am very interested in seeing what else this thread brings. :)

Edited by: MHayes on 11/10/2007 16:40:58 I understand what you are saying Steve, Why work when you don't have to, no doubt there is much fun to be had sitting at home playing Eve etc etc.
But people work because they HAVE to.
Obviously you need food, obviously you need shelter, if you don't work then someone is working to provide this for you which is just as "unfair" as some "fat cat" at the top milking all the profits and making everyone work long hours for minimum wage.
But if you don't like it then get an education, work hard and you can be at the top yourself. (these "fat cats" have likely worked their way up the ladder, you dont get 25 year old CEOs IRL) Welcome to the word, this is the way it is. It is only due to this capitalist society that we have all these modern comforts and conveniences such as PCs. If we lived like you want us to we would still be in the dark ages.
If you are getting benefits and you are able to work (not disabled or whatever) then you are stealing. end of.
In summery:
Yes not going to work would be cool but I also have ethics and like to earn my own way rather than someone else paying for me. It is only fair right??? I wouldn't steal so unless I can live without working in an ethical manner then I will continue to work.

For those of us of less moral fiber than MHayes, working is merely a choice.. a means to a goal, it is not the only way.
I could sell ***** for a living. Why don't I do that? well, aside from the obvious job safety hazards.... it isn't a choice I want to make, it isn't a viable means to my goal, although self-employed ***** dealers make a LOT of money. (I used to know one who made well over $35,000 a year working 2-3 hours a day total)
I choose to work (and more specifically, teach/play music) because to me, it is the best compromise between achieving my goals and living my passion.
You don't HAVE to work. You don't HAVE to do anything. Just keep that in mind, as nothing in this world has, or ever will be, in absolute terms.

Edited by: Riebart Norith on 12/10/2007 01:12:30 I can see the validity of the points presented, but I think there's one important one we're overlooking: What about those of us that enjoy our work? I personally love my work. I work in pure mathematics research for now, and am considering branching into the nice new field of financial mathematics.
I work because I love it, and I just happen to get paid while I'm at it. If I didn't like what I did, I'd find something I did like and do that instead. For me, working shouldn't be something I have to do, but something I want to do. This requires no special moral fibre, or commitment to eating (Although food is good), just a dedication to myself that I'm not going to wake up one morning and say, "I hate my life, wasted on stuff I hate even more."
Edit: I personally feel sorry for Steve here. He is so convinced that working is equivalent to being trapped in a dead-end job serving to those with more than you. I address this to you personally:
You feel as though you are somehow 'winning at life' as it were, because of us 'sheep' working our lives away, doing what you are convinced we hate. Sure, some people do things they don't like, but there are undoubtedly reasons for that. Many, many people love their jobs, and do them for the job, not for the money.

TBH there is no wasting life on EVE. Well maybe there is if you hate it, but then why play?
The goal of life is too be happy and successfull? The last part is a load of malarchy anyway ;p "Successfull" could me a lot of things, but most of the time it's just being content with what you've done.
So you've had a good run having fun? Success ;p

I have a life.
I mine, rat, do missions, some pvp, build stuff. In fact, I have more of a life now than I did before Eve came along.

Quite a few people like the work they do - they do not go to work because they have to but because they want to. It gives them sense of accomplishment of doing something meaningful, and of course more pay than those who are on welfare so in real life they can afford better entertainment for themselves - better living arrangements, better food and clothing, more entertainment options because they have the money to pay for it. And if you got a lot of free time you really can't appreciate it as much as when you don't have it and then get some :P
As for those who are in welfare, I have nothing against them. Any of those sitting on welfare have used only a tiny fraction of the expenses that have been spent, for example, in fuel, ammo, explosives, man hours that USA has decided to flush on its war with Iraq where billions on US dollars have been reported as "missing" due to poor accounting, or have been spent on gazillion stupid things a government can do that in the end did not benefit any of those who paid taxes for it. I'd rather see the whatever fraction of people who choose to not work and exist on low payouts they get from government housed and fed with my tax money. A bit of a humanist approach but it indirectly benefits me too that they're not out engaging in crime, begging, or doing a half-arsed job because they have no goals to work towards.

Those, are the words of someone with no goals in life.
This is what you cannot see, this is what you do not understand. We choose to work, we choose to realise our goals - it is our choice and we have made it. We may chose another path along the way, but we are aiming for something.
You are aimless, you are on autopilot with no destination.
We control our path, some warp to 100km and check the scenery, others warp to zero.

Are you realizing your own goals, or ones that the capitalist society has laid out for you? I've seen plenty of people who buy into the thought that life is a competition and winners are measured in wealth and social status. They may eventually have a large house, nice car and all kinds of expensive toys, but will they have truly enjoyed their lives? I've seen people walk that path, and frankly I'm not too willing to follow their example.

My goal is to enjoy life, which i cant do if i work. Also I am educated and have a degree i just choose to live in a manner that I enjoy most, if i myself worked for 20 years +, imo that would be a wasted 20 years. oh and Mhayes, i am by no means stealing, i am allowed to claim these benefits by the law of my country.
