As a player of Warhammer 40,000 and ofc EVE , the space ships of both universes have appealed to me greatly. the ships from the warhammer 40k universe are available in various scale models and i have enjoyed building variants and converting the kits.
after building particularly detailed conversion (pic incoming when camera available) i found i had accidentally built something very similar to a merlin frigate, i had never thought of building scale models of the eve ships before.
i figured this could be something i could not only do for fun but could spread the joy and sell some of them.
so who would be interested and what ships would you like to see ?
wouldn't really work to scale but models would be around shoebox sized and smaller depending on the ship. |

The important question is who Wouldn't be interested, as the members of said uninterested group would certainly be so sparse as to all be easily packed into a phone booth and set aflame.
just.. you know, an idea.
but, more to the point.. models, good.
plush vexor pillows with a sewn pocket full of drones.. better.

While were at it...
The girlfriend asked if she could get a rubber Stabber about 8 inches long that contains a battery compartment to power that shaking around stuff we see on the monitor when the ship is coming out of warp.
She won't tell me what she wants it for seeing she don't even play EvE.

Edited by: Phoenix Lord on 17/10/2007 04:25:16 Yea ive seen several of these threads, only bothered to follow the first one till i saw a dev answer.
Basically, the R&D would be too expensive to justify making them. The only way apparently, was to make them expensive or not at all, and if they were expensive, they would barely sell.
EDIT: I could be wrong though, remember that; but thats what i remember hearing from one of the devs in a thread. _____

It wouldn't actually cost that much. Two members of Octavian Vanguard got married in RL about 3 years back and we had two spaceships made for them from the game Jumpgate which was where they originally met. It was a sizeable collection, but nothing CCP couldn't handle. Once you've got the first one made, you've got a mould and you can go from there. The 3D CNC stuff was the pricy bit.

Edited by: Andrue on 17/10/2007 14:32:30 This has been asked about several times and usually results in a lot of positive responses. Unfortunately I think the problem is finding a sensible price point.
A lot of people would only be prepared to pay $20 and about all you'll get for that is a plastic, badly painted model. Fun I suppose if you want to play Eve during DT or hang them from your bedroom ceiling but basically naff, tat.
A fair number of people (me for one) would like decent die-cast models large and good enough to put on the mantle-piece or coffee table. Unfortunately you're then talking about $100 or more. There's not many people who would be prepared to pay that kind of money.
Note to CCP:I would be prepared to pay those kind of sums subject to quality and 'displayability factor' -- (Battle hardened industrialist)

Check with CCP first!
You have to fill in a form and sign it. I looked into it a while ago and mailed Kieron. I've got half a rifter built out of Polystyrene foam using a hot wire cutter. I was looking into different materials for different ship parts and types.
I was getting some practice in with the cutter. I used the really thin plywood to make templates for the hotwire cutter. To make the templates I imported ship models into Cinema 4d so I could easily view and measure the dimensions. The more you look at even the simplest models the more you realise how difficult it is. I was planning to build a mould once I had the prototype built.
But real life caught up and I don't have the time.

Yes, you need to get a non commercial license agreement just to make a model for personal usage (got one as well as I plan to build an Ishtar shaped computer case).
No idea what the options are if you plan to sell items based on CCP intellectual property.

While models you can actually assemble would be expensive, what about pewter replicas or a decent quality plastic? These should be paintable , capable of being easily attached to some sort of base for display, and fairly cheap. Plus, by varying the base material, you get several different qualities.
CCP already has in-depth 3d computer models of their ships. Just use a rapid prototyper or 3d printer to create a 3d phyiscal model, then use that model to create the molds.
Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems like a fairly inexpensive and easy process (relatively).

Not really, the extra cost would come from the designing of the molds, the kits themselves would be alot cheaper to produce don't you think?
Either way, Airfix is dead now, so it hardly matters. Perhaps there's another company we could propose this to...

Look for the EvE chess thread down the road. I'd still like to see official models though. Something nice enough to display, then again, why not make your own? Hell if someone could do some work with triexporter and/or produce a guide how to make our own scale plans of ships I'd have a ***** at scratchbuilding!
Nothing too complicated, just a side on, top down, and front and rear views of the ship with annotated dimensions?
CCP could look into doing at least that, they used to have 'blueprint' style images with some rudimentary data from WAY back, something like this wouldn't be hard to knock up?
Hand them over to the forumites and eventually you'd get a general consensus on what to use and how to build them into decent models?

well i have begun work on on rifter, not too hard really, parts taken from this Linkage
rest of parts made from various odds and ends, plasticard and old sprue bits.
i would love ccp to make models for sale, but its been a while now and they are not forthcoming.
with ccp owning whitewolf and whitewolfs ties with games workshop i thought they could use this as a way to get model kits made thru them, much like the other expensive show pieces at http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/.
however i'm making this model, and if i so wish will sell it , as far as i can tell ccp have no way of stopping this and i see no reason to stop me , its not like i'm building a business out of it. also as a back up i do not care for authority, and do as i wish and believe to be fair.

Edited by: Valan on 22/10/2007 11:51:30 The prongs are a mare its quite a complex 3D shape when you try and reproduce it.
I've done a bit more research and I'm thinking about starting again. If I manage it I'll be able to reproduce them in a white metal.
Only thing I would like to know because I've not been able to get an answer even when I mailed the question to CCP.
Can I hold a lottery for ISK to get them out in the community? I know I can't sell them for real money but I'm not given them away for nothing.
If I manage it I'll only be shipping to Europe and the US.
/start sig I love old characters that post 'I've beeen playing the game four years' when I know their account has been sold on. /end sig |

In my experience, CCP is most likely highly interested, but a little busy. Hopefully this will change with completion of the new upgrade, and we can get ships, as this must be the 5th thread with high levels of interest in the last 2 years.
Good Luck.
