I have heard people say 'Lawl' on Vent/TS and at first I found it strange but after a short while I got used to it.
Personaly I do not say 'lawl' or anything like that. I do end up using internet/EVE/Ghost Recon and a few other game phrases and terminology when talking with my wife or friends who also play the same games or understand what's being said.
As long as everyone in the conversation understands the inside joke then it good.

A part of me dies inside everytime I hear it said on TS or vent. lulz I don't mind because its usually someone being an ass which is ok. But my brain cries every time i hear stfu or ell oh ell. saying stfu makes no sense to me as its much more fun to say shut the F up as you get to emphasize the F word. In public I caught my self almost saying I gotta go afk real quick.. sometimes if i'm talking on the phone while using the computer i will press the scroll button on the mouse out of habit.

Completely aggree with this and I find it's very refreshing the way CCP interact with the community ^^
btw ass also refers to a donkey and also refering to someones ass is hardly a profanity now is it ;)
btw ftl if anyone spells out abbreviations in rl, without saying the words for real, saying "lol" or "roffle" or even a-f-k, but not w-t-f or r-l or b-t-w. I do indeed call people noobs/newbs however you want to spell it in rl but then again this has been common practise for longer than I can remember.

Unfortunately I have found interweb nerd speak creeping into my everyday vocab as well, despite my resistance to it. I have resigned myself to allowing a few out, lulz, epic, for the win, w-t-f, noobs and owned can easily be slid into normal convos and not be too eyebrow raising. A couple of times ive tetered on the brink of an "afk" or "pwned" without realising it.
There are however a few completely blasphemous one liners I completely hate. Leet, afk, pwned are the verbal eqivilent of rollerblading- they will have their moment in the sun but looking back on them in a year or so even their main supporters will shamefully admit how ghey they sounded.
My wife actually threw down an "el-oh-el" to me once over dinner. I calmly put down my fork, made eye contact and held it for 10 sec before stating "what." There was a recent episode of Californication that summed it up nicely. Happens and then I'm usually a bit shocked about myself and hope that noone noticed it.
With my old clan on teamspeak, people have used the words 'rofl', 'lol', 'nub' all the time. Especially 'ROFL' probably, because it has a nice ring. I like it. But think it isn't really used in the original way. When I said it, it was just an abbreviation of 'That's quite funny !', 'That's crazy !' or 'That's stupid.', depends also on how you stress/pronounce it.
Anyway, think those are funny words, but you shouldn't really use them, if you are speaking to normal unaffected people. I said it to some rl friends sometimes and also to my father once, and it was a bit embarrassing.

It means Laugh Out Loud. I've been on the internet since the year it went public. You think text messaging kids today have a lot of abreviations you should have seen early IRC. Trust me, LOL = Laugh Out Loud.
Oh and "el oh el" is the proper way to say it too.
Same here, but "el oh el" is not the proper way to say it.. Its the proper way to say the abbreviation "Lol", but not the word lol. You cant use an abbreviation like that in a sentence when talking in real life, you use words, unless its a name of something or someone. "Laughing out loud" is not a name in any way or form, hence you say "lawl", not listing the individual letters.
......plus its just sounds more fun :D

That's how it started for me. I used to give people funny looks when they used net-speak IRL while trying to maintain some aura of super-cerealness. Now I can hardly finish a sentance without injecting some net-speak into it. Even when I'm speaking in icelandic!

I'm guilty as hell... I regularly use lol (pronounced "lohl") and rofl. Those are usually the ones that get me the raised eye-brows or fits of laughter if the person knows what i'm on about.
What i also use a lot IRL is epic fail, pwned, gank, wtf (though i usually say "weee-teee-fck" or something like that) and have been known to talk about asshattery or tinfoilhattery but that was with people that know eve and usually also find this "normal" so it's not that bad.
What i have established at work is the term "first". Since i've started the "First" trip i get an answer to internal mails all the time from younger employees that just say "frist rofl!!!" which i find really funny.. but that only works for the younger internet generation.. the others must think we are totally crazy.
I think the next one i'll try and introduce will be "can i have your stuff?" whenever someone starts whining at a meeting... that would be sooo funny... but i guess that will take some explaining.
My god... I really am a geek hehe.

well i think it is a process every language has. For example, we germans, suisse and austrian people have mixed a huge amount of english in our language, now when i talk to my friends every one uses alot of english terms and of course internet terms. it is a bit scary, but well that's the way it is :-)
I bet if a native english speaker listenes to a german corp in TS they would understand the most parts, because it is just a mix of german, english and internet-speech :-)

Guys, you all have to watch Pure Pwnage comic series. There's a great moment when the main character, Jeremy, "a pro taht pwnZ noobz an' has ubah-micro" notices a sheep. And they go: - Ba-a-a! - Lo-o-l! - Ba-a-a! - Lo-o-l!

I do on occasion use "lawl", mostly as a sarcastic remark when someone's trying to be funny. Same with "lolzor" and "roffle". I will sometimes quite seriously call someone a "nub" for not knowing how to do something, and say "Epic Fail" when they do something horrendously (sp?) wrong.

Not on your nelly! In fact, hearing 'Lawl' on ts tends to provoke 'did he just... say lol?' in corp chat.
'Noob' and 'owned' crop up alot though, especially on BF1942 & Halo LAN nights. Often shouted.. or sung loudly in someone elses face

I do say it quite often, but only because ''lol'' in Dutch, means Fun, and you generally say it when something's funny. I hear people around me saying lol all the time when something funny happens, and most of those don't even know what it stands for.

I've said it a few times, but only when taking the **** out of something.
I remember about 6 months ago I was on vent, a few funny stories and jokes were flying around. A few chuckles here and there, and I hear a very clear and loud 'lawl'. Whole channel goes quiet, and someone else says 'Dude, did you just say lol?'
