If CCP are providing a Mac version, it should provide the same or close to the same experience PC users currently have. If it does not, there is no reason why people who only have a Mac should get a subscription. There are many reasons for this such as; PC users will have an unfair advantage over Mac users in 0.0 space, and Mac users are limited to doing mining or easy missions in fear of crashing doing anything more advanced.
If you only had a Mac (no bootcamp running) and taking into consideration the performance/ problems with the Eve Mac client, as it stands, would you buy a subscription?

My client gets the frequent server disconnects that others are getting. I have a 14 day trial and have never played EVE before. As it stands, "no."

Since it won't launch on my MacBook Pro, I'd say No.

while i do have some problems with freezes. i've played the whole weekend for many hours. and even with the "lousy" fps i joined some fleet ops (roughly 40 ships +drones and bubbles on a gate) and the fps was still above 20 most of the time rarely dropping down to 18. so it actually performed pretty good on my MacBook Pro (2,4ghz, 4gig ram, nvidia 8600 with 256mb)

I have tried the Mac client over the past weekend. It's just too buggy at this point in time for me to consider a paid subscription.

No. I'll reconsider if they give me a new trial period once they work out the bugs. As it stands right now I either disconnected or crashed about 50 times in the last 3 days. A few times I was able to play for a couple hours with no crashes, but sometimes it would crash every 5 minutes while doing simple things like mining or warping.
Playing on a MBP 2.0ghz (Tiger), 2GB RAM, 15"
I decided to try it on my Linux box and it's even worse. During the login process it said my trial had expired even though I had 10 days left on it.

Emphatically, NO.
I really like the game. The crashes are too frequent and too unexplained. Not a good environment for a subscription. I'm a safe player but still overly paranoid that I will loose everything in a sudden loss of connection doing something as innocent as hopping between systems.

No. Same as others, I'm getting way too many disconnections and crashes to consider subscribing. It's a nice game, I've quite enjoyed it so far. If I can get another trial period (with same character) once the client has been bug fixed, then I might be a convert.

YES!: for any simple mac user.who doesnt tinker with their mac.
I will state that saying 'using OS X or higher' might be a little missleading for Leopard or advance mac users, perhaps they could have waited for Leopard to be released and release the mac version 6 months after.

ok so for someone who has no account yet i'd say: -wait until the mac client is a bit matured-
maybe in a month or 2 the inital problems should be fixed.
but i see a lot of posts where ppl are saying it works better on tiger or even it wouldn't work at all on leopard. i'm running leopard and it's running fine beside 2 times where the client had something stuck and freezed right after logging in, but reboots fixed those problems both times.
the only problem i know of is when ppl have fresh installs of leopard on a case sensitive file system. but there are only 2 files with wrong names that can be manually fixed and i'm sure there'll be a fixed revision soon.

I'm actually running eve on a macbook (1,1) and sure there is some problems, but I'm not alone with them neither. Ok they game didn't have the texture-problems? when running in win2k (bootcamp).
I get around the texture problems by zoom-out max and command+enter when its starts to struggle and moving around the view of the space. ( something makes it better, or all does ) So I'm not saying that there isn't any problems, I got some other problems as well. ( unicode and freeze )
But I'm glad that CCP does this, you can play the game if you really wants to, sure I can't watch my ACs flaming but you still get kills. I think its nice that WE nix peoples don't have to dual boot into windows because some of us can't live without eve.
I trust CCP and that these problems will be fixes, and see no reason why I should pay when all other does it... oh wait, best solution is NO ONE should have to pay! yeah that's Something!

For me YES. This is how i did it. -Make a fresh install of leopard on your system (i was upgrading anyway so i just did it).
I solved my freeze problems in following way: -in ingame prefernces, uncheck "load station environment" -make sure you are not running any services such as timemachine, bittorrent or mail client open in the background. - Make sure that no resource intensive program is running (turn of messenger and microsofot office)
I basically start the game alone and then start other programs i feel i need. I did play the client for several hours in a pwp situation and actually had no problems.
Only gripes is that I could not use eve voice (but team speex in stead).
my system Leopard osx 10.5 on a 2.33 core duo2 macbookpro, xt1600 graphic

BTW I play in window mode in 1280x800. You get a slight better frame rate and the difference is not so much from using 1440x900 when you are playing. remember to press (apple)-enter to get into window mode.

Being a huge supporter of CCP in general and an absolute fan of this Mac version, i'd have to say that as it stands right now - the client is not playable.
Don't get me wrong, it's functional - i have no problems logging in to change skills or travel from station to station, but actually PLAYING EVE is out of the question.

It is not playable unless your playing amounts to sitting in station and occasionally hauling stuff.

The mac version convinced me to buy Leopard and Windows xp so I could play the PC version of the game. Been waiting for a reason to do both.
The frequency of total system lockups is insane and can't be good for someones computer.

Yes! It is playable - for some. It's not working for some people and working perfectly for others. Try the free trial to see if it works on your machine, and if it does great! If not, perhaps wait till the next patch.

I'll be waiting to get a subscription for now. While the game has been working great for the most part I have still gotten the occasional freeze or disconnect and in this game all it takes is a freeze at the wrong time and you lose the big new shiny ship you just bought. Hopefully a patch will come soon that will solve the major issues with the client, freezes and disconnects. Then I would definitely subscribe, love the game so far. |

I'm reconsidering my earlier No Vote. Based on some of the other comments in this thread I changed the app to run in windowed mode at 1280x800 instead of 1440x900. I also disabled the loading station environment setting.
I just finished playing for 4 hours with no freezes, disconnects, or crashes. If this stability holds I'll probably subscribe, but it would be nice to see them fix full screen and 1440x900 mode.

its too inconsistent to tell...
I was connected just fine with no problems for like 6 hours or more, then all of a sudden one astroid field, during a fight.... over the next 20 minutes i crashed about 8 times... left taht area went somewhere else.. and it just keeps crashing over and over and over again no mater what I do now... nothing changed at all to cause this.
The 3 days ive been using the free trial, this is how its been. Its either really bad, or just fine with many hours working great... it just changes back and forth completely randomly.
I really do like the game after a few days and would love a full account. I have a Windows machine that I could play on, but I really would rather not, perfer lounging around with my laptop, not sitting at a desk. At this point, no, i'll wait to pay for Eve until problems have been worked out.... I like it, but not enough to pay for its current instabilities, or subject myself to Windows.

For me: No. These weird icons and random UI bits flash up on screen, obscuring everything and the computer slows. I love the game, but i cant get by the fact that its nearly unplayable on my macbook.

Maybe YES I have had my share of disconnects (no graphical problems though), but it's gotten better to the point where I can play for hours without problems.
If I went purely on principle, I wouldn't get a subscription. However, I'm willing to give CCP the benefit of a doubt, and want to encourage Mac game development/porting. So I will probably get a sub and see what happens. If they don't improve/fix the client during that time however, I will definitely quit and complain loudly. :)

With mine, and my brothers experience using both Mac OS X 10.4 and Mac OS X 10.5 I would have to say if you are not willing to boot camp it, you do not want to subscribe as you will only become frustrated.
Both of us are experiencing random crashes, I on a Mac Pro with 10.5 and an ATI 1900XL and he with a Mac Pro with 10.4 and an NVidia 6600 (whatever the lower end card is) and only 1GB of RAM.
not just client crashes, but full on system freezes. I've even had the entire display shut off, or the screen go into what looked like a color negative of what it was completely locked up.
I'm hoping that the trinity client is more native than emulated, but I know that is a lot of work for CCP for probably a fairly small payout.

The mac client is too buggy (see my thread "lost connection to server") and the developer won't acknowledge that there is an issue! If they were working on it, I might be willing to hang and work with them, but I have no patience for this. Too bad, cuz it's a great game. I'm outta here when my 14 days are up.
