If CCP are providing a Mac version, it should provide the same or close to the same experience PC users currently have. If it does not, there is no reason why people who only have a Mac should get a subscription. There are many reasons for this such as; PC users will have an unfair advantage over Mac users in 0.0 space, and Mac users are limited to doing mining or easy missions in fear of crashing doing anything more advanced.
If you only had a Mac (no bootcamp running) and taking into consideration the performance/ problems with the Eve Mac client, as it stands, would you buy a subscription?

My client gets the frequent server disconnects that others are getting. I have a 14 day trial and have never played EVE before. As it stands, "no."

while i do have some problems with freezes. i've played the whole weekend for many hours. and even with the "lousy" fps i joined some fleet ops (roughly 40 ships +drones and bubbles on a gate) and the fps was still above 20 most of the time rarely dropping down to 18. so it actually performed pretty good on my MacBook Pro (2,4ghz, 4gig ram, nvidia 8600 with 256mb)

I have tried the Mac client over the past weekend. It's just too buggy at this point in time for me to consider a paid subscription.

No. I'll reconsider if they give me a new trial period once they work out the bugs. As it stands right now I either disconnected or crashed about 50 times in the last 3 days. A few times I was able to play for a couple hours with no crashes, but sometimes it would crash every 5 minutes while doing simple things like mining or warping.
Playing on a MBP 2.0ghz (Tiger), 2GB RAM, 15"
I decided to try it on my Linux box and it's even worse. During the login process it said my trial had expired even though I had 10 days left on it.

Emphatically, NO.
I really like the game. The crashes are too frequent and too unexplained. Not a good environment for a subscription. I'm a safe player but still overly paranoid that I will loose everything in a sudden loss of connection doing something as innocent as hopping between systems.

No. Same as others, I'm getting way too many disconnections and crashes to consider subscribing. It's a nice game, I've quite enjoyed it so far. If I can get another trial period (with same character) once the client has been bug fixed, then I might be a convert.

YES!: for any simple mac user.who doesnt tinker with their mac.
I will state that saying 'using OS X or higher' might be a little missleading for Leopard or advance mac users, perhaps they could have waited for Leopard to be released and release the mac version 6 months after.

ok so for someone who has no account yet i'd say: -wait until the mac client is a bit matured-
maybe in a month or 2 the inital problems should be fixed.
but i see a lot of posts where ppl are saying it works better on tiger or even it wouldn't work at all on leopard. i'm running leopard and it's running fine beside 2 times where the client had something stuck and freezed right after logging in, but reboots fixed those problems both times.
the only problem i know of is when ppl have fresh installs of leopard on a case sensitive file system. but there are only 2 files with wrong names that can be manually fixed and i'm sure there'll be a fixed revision soon.

I'm actually running eve on a macbook (1,1) and sure there is some problems, but I'm not alone with them neither. Ok they game didn't have the texture-problems? when running in win2k (bootcamp).
I get around the texture problems by zoom-out max and command+enter when its starts to struggle and moving around the view of the space. ( something makes it better, or all does ) So I'm not saying that there isn't any problems, I got some other problems as well. ( unicode and freeze )
But I'm glad that CCP does this, you can play the game if you really wants to, sure I can't watch my ACs flaming but you still get kills. I think its nice that WE nix peoples don't have to dual boot into windows because some of us can't live without eve.
I trust CCP and that these problems will be fixes, and see no reason why I should pay when all other does it... oh wait, best solution is NO ONE should have to pay! yeah that's Something!

For me YES. This is how i did it. -Make a fresh install of leopard on your system (i was upgrading anyway so i just did it).
I solved my freeze problems in following way: -in ingame prefernces, uncheck "load station environment" -make sure you are not running any services such as timemachine, bittorrent or mail client open in the background. - Make sure that no resource intensive program is running (turn of messenger and microsofot office)
I basically start the game alone and then start other programs i feel i need. I did play the client for several hours in a pwp situation and actually had no problems.
Only gripes is that I could not use eve voice (but team speex in stead).
my system Leopard osx 10.5 on a 2.33 core duo2 macbookpro, xt1600 graphic

BTW I play in window mode in 1280x800. You get a slight better frame rate and the difference is not so much from using 1440x900 when you are playing. remember to press (apple)-enter to get into window mode.

Being a huge supporter of CCP in general and an absolute fan of this Mac version, i'd have to say that as it stands right now - the client is not playable.
Don't get me wrong, it's functional - i have no problems logging in to change skills or travel from station to station, but actually PLAYING EVE is out of the question.

The mac version convinced me to buy Leopard and Windows xp so I could play the PC version of the game. Been waiting for a reason to do both.
The frequency of total system lockups is insane and can't be good for someones computer.

I'll be waiting to get a subscription for now. While the game has been working great for the most part I have still gotten the occasional freeze or disconnect and in this game all it takes is a freeze at the wrong time and you lose the big new shiny ship you just bought. Hopefully a patch will come soon that will solve the major issues with the client, freezes and disconnects. Then I would definitely subscribe, love the game so far. |

I'm reconsidering my earlier No Vote. Based on some of the other comments in this thread I changed the app to run in windowed mode at 1280x800 instead of 1440x900. I also disabled the loading station environment setting.
I just finished playing for 4 hours with no freezes, disconnects, or crashes. If this stability holds I'll probably subscribe, but it would be nice to see them fix full screen and 1440x900 mode.

its too inconsistent to tell...
I was connected just fine with no problems for like 6 hours or more, then all of a sudden one astroid field, during a fight.... over the next 20 minutes i crashed about 8 times... left taht area went somewhere else.. and it just keeps crashing over and over and over again no mater what I do now... nothing changed at all to cause this.
The 3 days ive been using the free trial, this is how its been. Its either really bad, or just fine with many hours working great... it just changes back and forth completely randomly.
I really do like the game after a few days and would love a full account. I have a Windows machine that I could play on, but I really would rather not, perfer lounging around with my laptop, not sitting at a desk. At this point, no, i'll wait to pay for Eve until problems have been worked out.... I like it, but not enough to pay for its current instabilities, or subject myself to Windows.

Maybe YES I have had my share of disconnects (no graphical problems though), but it's gotten better to the point where I can play for hours without problems.
If I went purely on principle, I wouldn't get a subscription. However, I'm willing to give CCP the benefit of a doubt, and want to encourage Mac game development/porting. So I will probably get a sub and see what happens. If they don't improve/fix the client during that time however, I will definitely quit and complain loudly. :)

With mine, and my brothers experience using both Mac OS X 10.4 and Mac OS X 10.5 I would have to say if you are not willing to boot camp it, you do not want to subscribe as you will only become frustrated.
Both of us are experiencing random crashes, I on a Mac Pro with 10.5 and an ATI 1900XL and he with a Mac Pro with 10.4 and an NVidia 6600 (whatever the lower end card is) and only 1GB of RAM.
not just client crashes, but full on system freezes. I've even had the entire display shut off, or the screen go into what looked like a color negative of what it was completely locked up.
I'm hoping that the trinity client is more native than emulated, but I know that is a lot of work for CCP for probably a fairly small payout.

The mac client is too buggy (see my thread "lost connection to server") and the developer won't acknowledge that there is an issue! If they were working on it, I might be willing to hang and work with them, but I have no patience for this. Too bad, cuz it's a great game. I'm outta here when my 14 days are up.

I've sent in a bug report (complete with crash log etc.), and they responded that they were already aware of the issue and would add my information to the case file. Now, I have no idea what resources they dedicate to solving the problem, but they do acknowledge there is a problem. Which is a good start.
I'll run in trial mode for a few more days until I know how it works for me (only been 3 days this far), then we'll see.

if they dont fix it before my free trial is up, it would be nice if we can somehow flag our accounts with them so they let us have another free trial, maybe only like 4 days, when they claim to have more bugs fixed. i dont see paying them to hope the next patch works ok.
maybe try to get another free trial and play newbie for a few days and if it works good then go back to the old account. If there is no way for me to try for free and know its going to work ok, I'm just not going to worry about playing ever. Usually I have more faith in game companies, but if I had paid them right now I'd be asking them for a refund.

No.
I started on the windows client using Boot Camp and switched to the Mac client when it came out, but all it has done so far is crash both itself and Leopard in some really unplesant ways, i've lost one ship since playing and that was due to what can only be described as 0fps from the moment combat started to the moment it ended, in my death.

No, I wouldn't suggest you pay for this if all you have is a Mac. It isn't worth it right now.
However, for me (running on Leopard, MacBook Pro) the game is very much playable. There are a few major issues for me (such as the price history display having no text) but most of the other issues I have are minor (wierd texture when using mining lasers) not really affecting my playability. I don't PvP at all, so I can't speak to how well it works in PvP battles. I have a Windows/Linux machine next to me that I can let EVE do it's thing on when I'm doing real work on my Mac, and run EVE on the mac when I'm elsewhere and doing less intensive stuff.

My vote, ABSOLUTELY YES.
I actually found the game playable even with the frequent disconnects -- I'm logged back on in seconds, and even running kill missions I haven't lost my ship or anything at all, because the game warps you away when you DC and warps you right back when you reconnect. Now that the disconnects and freezes have almost entirely gone away for me, I'll definitely be subscribing as soon as real life allows. I actually found the HUMONGOUS AMOUNT of skill training I needed to do much more annoying than the texture problems, lag, or disconnects.
I don't think the Mac experience NEEDS to be absolutely equal to the Windows experience. I think it needs to be playable and that's it.

after using the client quite a bit on my macbook pro I can say this: if you're doing empire mission running and not at war or just a miner, go for it! and my answer is yes.
if you're trying to pvp, especially in big fleet battles, likes to cmd+tab to do other stuff with eve open (makes everything else run REALLY slow), try to do administrative tasks such as changing channel settings, or anything that requires your connection to be stable or you'll die, then no.

And make sure you all attach information about your hardware setup:

* Select "About This Mac" from the Apple Menu (The picture of the Apple on the System Menubar) * # Click the "More Info..." button on the "About This Mac" dialog that appears. * Select "Save" from the System Profiler File menu * Save to a file on your Desktop in "System Profiler 4.0 XML" format. * By default this creates a file named .spx Get the users to upload this file along with bug reports.

I also vote NO at the moment. I get the same issue as above although I think it is because of the hardware I have more than anything else.
I have also never encountered a program that can BSOD a Mac with such ease. I have never had to pull the power cord on a Mac before! Guys, serious props, you're breaking OSX - woot!
I am trying it on an Intel Mini 1.66Ghz Core Duo with 2Gb Ram and 10.4.10.Even with the graphics settings as low as I can get them and on maximum zoom out it is an epileptic fit waiting to happen
On the other hand it works just fine on my wifes Core 2 Duo 15"MBP - which she won't swap with me for some reason

Yes.
But with precautions: I had to wipe EVE once and sometimes it gets buggy, crashing constantly, then again it can be stable for hours; on a MBP with 10.4.10; the string copy-paste issue is another larger nuisance IMHO, but should be solved soon, I hope. Anyway, I do not feel bad about having inscribed, quite the contrary so far.

I just started playing a day or two ago. I started out playing under bootcamp and it was fine, but I was getting alot of disconnections and crashes with the mac client initially.
Since then, the Mac client seems to have stabilized for whatever reason and is very playable - granted this is outside any kind of heavy combat situations so YMMV in those instances.
However, I have noticed that my general Leopard install seems a bit less stable after using the EVE client. After a few hours of play last night I had a hard time getting iTunes and other apps to close and open gracefully, and I had to restart the computer to regain the stability.
Obviously, being able to run bootcamp means I'm more inclined to continue my subscription. However, causing general Leopard instability is pretty unacceptable and I think I'll be going into XP via bootcamp to play from now on.

As of right now, if I only owned a Mac, I would not buy the subscription. The client is too unstable to do anything but sit in station and train skills.
Right now, I'm using my MacBook at work just to chat with corp mates, train skills and confuse our enemies as to what timezone I'm active in (or am I? :P)
Anyways, right now the client is a glorified skill training/irc program.
Would love to play on the road though...but I'm not going to risk going into space as of now.

So far I would say yes on an early iMac with Leopard. In about 10 hours of play I have had only two crashes and one disconnect.
However, I am now running in windowed mode only!
In full screen mode, crashes do not crash your OS X, however you can't use expose, spaces, alt-tab etc... to go to your OS X desktop and force quit Eve, the only way out is a hard reboot. Therefore the need to run in windowed mode.
Hope this gets fixed.

Here's Why I say yes.
I was in the eve beta, and have played on and off since 2003. I was a Windows user up until about 6 months ago. I was very pleased to see a Mac client for Eve. My expirence to date with the Mac client (about a week) has been IMHO no different than the expirence I had in the past with the PC client.

I did some testing yesterday, and from what I have seen so far I'd say it's working as well as the Windows client for me. This weekend I'll try some level 4 missions. Maybe I'll change my mind after that...
I'm using an iMac (I think second generation) with 2 GHz core 2 duo and 1 Gb RAM, running Tiger 10.4.11.
It would, however, be nice with an extra resolution step between 1300-something and 1600-something (can't remember the exact numbers).

The first couple of days, I would have said no. I had consistent freezes (at least once an hour) that required me to force quit EVE. Each time my settings would be corrupted and I would have to redo them the next time I started the client.
After the first few days, however, the freezes became far less frequent. I think I've had four since a week ago (maybe about 50 hours of the client being open, fullscreen mode). In addition, my settings no longer get corrupted when there is a freeze.
So, my vote is YES, I would (and did) buy a subscription.

Edited by: Sven Nakamura on 17/11/2007 08:28:50 I'll wait.
I'm intrigued and tantalized by the trial, and a pc-using friend keeps swearing to me that 0.0 space is an absolute blast. And I was a big fan of games like Elite and Escape Velocity back in the day. So I'm pretty sure I could become a big fan. But EVE is just not there yet.
I think I'll probably wind up waiting about a week or so after my trial expires, then check back here to see if there's a new client out to fix all of these issues. I've got most of them... the disconnects, the freezes, nothing to actually crash OS X tho. But some of them are just plain absurd. CCP has managed to break something so simple as keyboard mapping! When loading EVE, I suddenly find the functions of my command and control keys swapped! Now, that is just plain sloppy.

I will state that saying 'using OS X or higher' might be a little missleading for Leopard or advance mac users, perhaps they could have waited for Leopard to be released from apple and release the mac version at a later date.
^^^ That, I'm sorry, is just a load of dingos' kidneys. Leopard developers' previews have been out for many, many months. I have a stack of them sitting in a drawer at work. All of my code was Leopard-ready a couple of weeks before the big day. And when we got our GMs, they went right on the QA machines, they did a quick smoke test against the real thing, and we had our Leopard patches out in less than 2 business days.
There's really no excuse for any other developer not doing the same, except pure laziness.

I played the trial for 10 days and decided to sign up for a subscription yesterday. Crashes on my MBP have been frequent, but I have faith that these issues will be resolved in time. Great games on the Mac are few and far between, IMO, and I feel it's important to show support for those developers that are putting forth an effort.

As for the poll answer would be NOT yet
Ok how the hell i can actually play window mode and run multiple client without editing some files i don't even know where they are at?
No window mode from options (like hell i have to edit configuration file by hand?) limited resolution options.
Dual client causes the mouse to stop respond when you switch command tab from fullscreen to fullscreen. Very very poor performance as compared to win with boot camp Iam talking 50% performance drop.
Good job so far just have to wait maybe month or 2 and get these issues solved then il say thumbs up.

I wish I could get the game to start in Window mode by default. I wish Window mode was an option in the Graphics tab (I only see Fullscreen). Cmd-Enter is fine but to me this is an oversight.
Also if you are in window mode, the menu bar shrinks about 30-40% across the screen, whenever the game window has focus (which looks weird).

NO... Not unless they are willing to give me another trial period once they fix the connection issues. A friend of mine and I started up the trial at the same time to get away from WoW and I have yet to get past the 3rd part of the tutorial as I get disconnected every other minute. When I log back in i'm somewhere completely different with no clue on how to get back to where I started. Then, when I start browsin the map or askin for help..., disconnected again.
Yes I made detailed reports on the issues and I recieved responses saying that it was a known issue and added to the case. However, my friend who actually enjoyed the game probably wont subscribe now and unless the above mentioned happens I won't be either .

I didn't get around to try level 4 missions, but I did try some level 3. The only complaint I have is performance. With lots of rats and drones circling performance drops quite a lot, but I still had about 20 fps at those times. Running missions in a system with 200 players in local might have had something to do with that too though...
No crashes and no disconnects yet.
Only problem I had was after having logged in and out a few times, then Finder went mad and various programs crashed. A reboot solved that though, and I can't say for certain the eve client is to blame.

Yes - but based on the premise that they are still working on sorting out these issues and that it will be better in future.
It's stable and runs great for me for ages, then ends up in an endless series of lockups. After a reboot it's usually ok again. If I thought this is as good as it's gonna get I might say no, but I'll have faith in them for now, and I plunked down a subscription fee.
I will take their advice and file some bug reports, though.

But if the lockup issues are fixed, totally YES. If the texture problems are also fixed, then absolutely, it's a fantastic game and well worth it.

I would say yes, but it's a little dicey. I can say this, there seems to be a big difference based on machine setup. I have the original intel imac with the bigger graphics card, 2gigs ram, and very clean install of Leopard. The game has only crashed on a couple times in the last 6 days of the demo. I have not done any PVP but have had a good experience with multiple target battles with rats, up to five on me a time with others in the area.
The most worrisome problem I have experienced is the state the system is left in after I log out of EVE. The is a definite change to be screen color and gamma (less contrast), some apps behave oddly or crash etc...
Frame rate is a low compared to what I get in WOW (30ish in space).
On my wife's macbook the game is unplayable but it really does not meet the min specs because of the integrated graphics card. Most people who are really unhappy seem to have macbooks or MBPs. Could be the laptop design.
Here are my machine specs: Model Name:iMac Model Identifier:iMac4,1 Processor Name:Intel Core Duo Processor Speed:2 GHz Number Of Processors:1 Total Number Of Cores:2 L2 Cache:2 MB Memory:2 GB Bus Speed:667 MHz Chipset Model:ATY,RadeonX1600 Type:Display Bus:PCIe PCIe Lane Width:x16 VRAM (Total):256 MB
I will probably upgrade from the trial...game is just too cool! :)

RAM is key. The bigger and better the machine the better your experience will be. I play on a Mac Pro tower Top O the line and a new Intel Macbook Pro. The tower is significantly better at playing EVE. I only play on the laptop if I am mining. I'm thankful that CCP has taken a step in this direction. Let's hope they continue. In station = 30 - 40 fps
Warp = 20 fps
staying in POS or fighting with rats 5 to 10 fps.
I'm afraid to use the macclient for PvP in Fleetbattles.
I think the performance depends on objects in space, so the maccleint for traders is fine und perhaps ratting is O.k. (not fine), but not for PvP an Fleetbattles in no way.

Without a doubt, the Eve client is the most unstable piece of software on my Mac.
I've found that it's only real use is for logging in to change skill training. Try leaveing a station and it's DC-Dead/Crash-Dead/etc. It seems to be way more of a memory hog on Macs then it is in Windows as well.
I have to say, given the way Blizzard supports Macs and Windows with the WoW Client (which does provide the same experience with additional features as that Windows users have), I find this quite dissappointing. Come on CCP, give us a Mac Native version. Consider it a Christmas present for your loyal fans. _______________________________________ Comfortably Numb |

I'm using EVE in windowed mode under Leopard (10.5.1) and get framerates of 30-40 fps in space, 25-30 in combat (no PvP yet though), and 80+ in stations. I'm using one of the new aluminum 2.4 GHz iMacs with 2 GB RAM and ATI 2600 HD Pro graphics card. I only get occasional freezes, and simply relaunching the client is almost always enough to fix that.

I am new to EVE as well, but I have been lusting after a space based MMORPG so I'll put up with a few bugs to start with. I know its sacrelige to mention anything other than EVE but WoW also wasn't that dialed in for a long time after the MAC client was released. I experience a total freeze once for every 5 hours of gametime. It's simple to fix: just reboot. A PC takes five minutes to start, while a MAC takes 1 and a half max. If I'm just logging to train or grind its not bad just frustrating. As others have said, I support MAC client dev so I will put up with a little hassle to encourage improvements. I think the issue may have more to do with the latency of your interent connection than anything else. When I am at home I can only connect through a laggy router with bad ethernet and the game is SLOW. If I go to someplace with a strong router and great connection the program rarely has an issue.
Running: MAC Book Pro 2.4ghz, 1gb, Mid range card (I've forgotten what it is and I'm at work without my computer)
Hopefully the fix will come with TRINITY!!!!

The gameplay is not compelling (I was looking for something to take me away from the grind-fest that is WoW, but all I'm doing now is mining). The graphics problems crash my computer.
I'm going to keep trying to build my character during the last week of the free trial, then hang around to see if CCP announces any major bugfixes or performance improvements. Or perhaps I'll run into some group of people who can show me how to have fun in this game despite the laggy interface and random crashes.
The game as it stands is not worth $20/month. But it's only been three days, we'll see if I can find something worth staying for.

Remember that Blizzard has been building their games to be cross platform from the beginning since Starcraft. I can't comment about W2 or Diablo 1, but the Windows Starcraft CDs had an embryonic non-functioning Mac version on them; it was a few months late, but it was clearly meant to exist from the start. WoW and W3 had Mac in mind from the very beginning, and had simultaneous releases with their Windows counterparts.
Taking something such as EVE that has been developed over the course of 4 years to be Windows only and suddenly demanding a native Mac version is unreasonable. There must be DirectX stuff all over the codebase since there was no need to abstract it.
Clearly, a native client would be a better solution from a functionality perspective. But when you're talking about a game with a userbase of around 200k, it just doesn't make sense to invest that much time in a Mac client.
I am a Mac user, and I really want a Mac client for EVE. I just also happen to be a game programmer, and have some idea about how difficult the task really is.

See my post on finder problems after running EVE, http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=650610 The only way that they could get me to play after my trial was up was if i could buy game time with isk, but at 200 million isk per 30 days that is not going to happen in a trial period.
Their are just currently too many bug, and with random game lock ups it is getting frustrating as hell. Some serious changes will need to happen before I pay USD for this game, too bad it is a great game.

Yes! Absolutely. I started in Windows in Boot Camp, and have switched to the Mac Client. I have an original Intel iMac with 1.5 Gig of RAM and the X1600 Graphics. I get consistently 19-25 fps no matter where I am, and it is otherwise the same gaming experience I get in windows on any of my systems. Remember that movies in the theater are only 24 fps, TV in Europe is 25 fps and TV in North America is 30 fps, so I don't see 19 - 25 fps as a serious performance problem. Your eye can't tell the difference between 30 fps and 120 fps, and computer monitors (LCD's anyway) only refresh 60 times per second anyway. The high fps value is only a cool brag right for graphics card manufacturers.
Trinity has a new graphics engine that has universally higher fps (until you load the premium content) on my windows machines, so I expect the same performance boost will be in the Mac Client.
I do get the random freezing, always when jumping, warping or docking. Command-Option-Esc always gets me back to the desktop to restart, and it only happens once every couple of hours.
I have now spent many hours playing using the Mac Client, and have no compelling reason to run the Windows client.

Well while it is still not quite up to its PC version in funtionality and glitches IMHO its is working pretty well on my nice new 24"Imac.
As a matter of fact ITS BLOODY AMAZING!!!
We need to support the Mac client if we ever want it to be as good as the windows one. After all its new and new things are always buggy.
I have been using EVE on the 24" Imac and a MB (now that is flacky) which is gr8 for market and science work but not good for missions due the graphics irregularities. Someone please look at getting more functionality on them(macbooks)please. Mine looks gr8 then just goes weird.

YES, and I have subscribed.
My hardware: MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz, 2GB RAM, nVidia 8600 running Tiger; AirPort Extreme connected to a DSL modem.
I usually run EVE client in in-window mode (cmd-return) with Safari, text edit, system monitor, and sometimes OpenOffice/X11 open. Effects are turned off. I like to play in the tactical view, zoomed out to see 50km-radius sphere around the ship for better situational awareness.
After the first Mac patch, the client has been rock-solid. CPU cores are never fully loaded (25%/75%), even with ~15 NPC ships buzzing around.
My main complaint is that the game has been a major drag on my real life. :)
We'll see if things will be the same after the Trinity patch. I'm a bit disappointed to hear that the premium content is not supported on the Mac client.

Absolutly not.
Unless I play crossover, my screen is torn apart by graphical errors which make it near impossible to undock (this never, or rarely, happens in stations). These graphical errors range anywhere from modules being out of place to my screen flickering pink and red lines until I restart the client, only for it to happen again.
Just play crossover, its not worth it.

I'd say yes.
Though freezes do occur I've only noticed them when I'm pushing my clients to it's limits... Opening lots of info windows rapidly while warping and playing in market. Although there have been a few freezes outside of this, you won't be in 0.0 in a titan anytime soon so go ahead and start playing, just say in 0.6 or higher space. Who cares if the rats kill your frig? Just drop the 30k and buy a new one... no harm done.
Also the GM's are great about replacing ships lost due to bugs. Just open a petition about it and chances are they will gladly help. They know the game isn't perfect just like we do.
Although do NOT get your hopes up about the trinity patch as it's not working for mac yet and there is no telling when it will. All I've heard about it is "early 08" which could mean anything (Somewhere from January to June). :(
Still, it's a fun game worth playing. Join a corp!! You have no idea how much your game experience improves :D

Yes, just about, but if you can find a copy of windows somewhere you'll get much better running XP via bootcamp. I do both: stay in OS X for quick sessions, but reboot into windows if i'll be playing a while.

Yes I'm paying now.
I did the 14 day trial, and it has some problems, but in general it runs...OK. I'm not getting into dangerous sectors yet (or less than 0.6) and I admittedly have frustrating sessions where I can't do anything without a CPU reboot due to graphics/memory leaks that don't release on logout. However, in the 30-40 days I've been playing (at least 1-2 hours actively per day) I've only had three days where things were so bad I had to reboot or give up playing.
I don't get the graphics errors I've seen in other posts, in fact the only big problem I have (and Cider/CCP know about it) is the damn untrackable "poof" when the app quits, no logged error, no warning, and they know it is happening and they are trying to find it as well. Granted I don't know how things will be further in, but as this game takes TIME to master, if you are a NEW player with the mac version (not a WIN -> MAC switch) and your hardware is up to spec, it works pretty well, IMHO.

On a first-get Macbook Pro (Core Duo, not Core 2 Duo, even), my answer is a definite YES. Been extremely pleased with it, allowing me to log in and play on the go, or even just to log in and do skill changes at work and such. Haven't had any issues so far.

Yes! My Mac mini plays it fine on a 24" screen. I only run into issues in Jita, but my Windows comp does too. I average 15-30 fps in battle which is plenty for PVE and small PVP encounters. I cannot comment on massive fleet battles though.

No I can't push things at all. I must behave very politely with the interface.. Benign operations like raising a chat window before a Get Info finished fetching an avatar is apparently too much to ask. I greatly fear the Market window; its a crash button.
.. and such things. Not playable enough to justify a monthly fee. Sorries..

Probably not
Just started the trial yesterday and have had quite a few unexpected quits at random times along with the map getting a screwy every other time I open it. It doesn't like letting me click on any buttons. Graphics are cool, but could use some better shading in clouds and edges need to be smoothed off.

This sort of graphical artifacts are usually caused by unsupported hardware, such as the Macbooks with an integrated Intel graphics card.

easy solution - start supporting them. The macbook (w/o pro) is not a bad platform its high performant (classic client on bootcamp runs very fast and smooth).
while the following variables are set as they are - i say no: windowed = NO OS lockups = yes framerate on a duocore macbook = turtle premium content = lol, dream on
Wanna risk your capital in a fleetfight not knowing when the next OS lockup may happen?
As long you just support very specific hi end mac's with very specific GFX chipsets - you dont have a "mac client" - but you have a "with some luck you can trade tritanium from a NPC station application"
...i am an eve addict since almost 5 years, ill stay true to you guys. But dont betray yourself and your customers thats not in CCPs tradition imo. Warn potential subscribers beyong legal requirements about what they can expect, and especially - what they cannot - compare to windows business class pilots.

This is not CCP's issue.. or Transgameing's.. this is all Apple, the drivers for the built-in video card is subpar, you should open a ticket with Apple, the more people who report the issue with them the more support CCP/TG will get from Apple.

NO - I will post the reasons shortly, but first let's examine my hardware...
- Aluminum iMac C2D 2.4GHz with 20" display - 4 GB of Apple-certified RAM (yes, it could have been cheaper from elsewhere, but you can't blame me for using incompatible hardware) - ATi Mobility (alas) Radeon 2600 HD with 256MB VRAM - USB keyboard and mouse - Mac OS X 10.5.1 - High-speed cable internet access
The above computer is capable of chewing up and spitting out Quake 4 at the highest quality settings and resolution, World of Warcraft on similar settings, tears through games like Team Fortress 2 when run in CrossOver Mac, etc. It's a powerful system, and EVE should be very comfortable here. It's a commercial product which I am paying for, which means it's not a beta and it must be rock-solid and stable, right? Guess again...
Top 3 reasons why I cancelled my account:
- Crashing: I have probably done more than most people would in order to work around the crashing issues with EVE. I completely disconnected all of my external hardware except for a keyboard and mouse, formatted hard drive and installed Leopard and EVE Online. The game still crashes very frequently, leaving the entire system unstable and requiring a full reboot of the machine to get anything to work. The crashing happens most frequently if I am in a fleet jumping from system to system.
- Atrocious graphics performance and horrible graphics quirks at even the lowest settings: Ever try being in an area where there is a cloud of dust and 30 rats around you? Such a condition causes EVE to run very, very slowly. Granted, I know that my video card has plenty to do with that and I should expect this if I were running at full settings, but when I have all the effects turned off and I am using the lowest possible color settings, this shouldn't be an issue.
- (did I mention) Crashing: In an experiment, I set my colors to the lowest available setting (24bit without 8bit alpha), set the resolution to a ludicrously low size (1024x640), turned off all effects, disabled hardware sound acceleration, even turned off caching because one of the most puzzling problems with EVE is its runaway memory leaks. Did that work? Partially... I can now play the game for 2 hours instead of 30 minutes before crashing, and at the end of 2 hours I need a full reboot.
I am sure there are other Mac applications out there that behave just as badly if not worse, but I have yet to come across one. This is a product for which I am paying a monthly fee, not a freeware app that Joe the Teenage Programmer wrote in computer science class. This demonstrates the absolute worst in quality assurance measures from a company who is, by their own free will, producing a Mac client.
CCP have done a wonderful job getting me interested in the game and getting me riled up because it doesn't work. Congratulations, EVE is a great game. However, when I do everything short of buying a Windows PC and EVE still can't play with any sort of stability or performance, this means that someone in the QA department didn't even bother trying, or was only using a Mac Pro for testing.
This is not a matter of the Mac version being new and needing to be updated and I should be patient. This is a commercially released product. It need not be perfect in every way, but it must be better than what we have right now.
Epic fail, CCP/Transgaming. Try again.

@Everdusk: Sorry to moan about your post BUT...
- I play Eve on exactly the same hardware - Used Leopard from the start (10.5.2 seed right now) - Didn't do anything to work against any glitches / crashes
And I really enjoy playing Eve on my mac.. I rarely get a crash once every two weeks and my graphics are perfect...

I am perplexed. At the time I tried all of this, I literally had three things installed:
What settings are you using? Do you have any software that might be making things better?

An update - I subscribed to the game since there are some people in Republic University who are fun to play with and understanding of the constant crash-to-desktop.
I play on a 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo iMac (the last of the 17" white enclosure models). After I run EVE, I have to restart the computer otherwise get Mac OS X dialogs that are missing text, textures and sometimes even button. Running WoW after playing EVE is a sure-fire way to lock up the graphics card.
I can also run EVE on my MacBook with settings turned down as far as the can go, and just accept the requirement to reboot the hardware when the graphics card locks up.
I'm just coping with it for the meantime in the hope that all the parties involved can sort out the various issues with crashing the graphics chipset.
