I found it particularly ironic that they wanted to charge her with inciting religious hatred, when they themselves are inciting religious based hatred for punishing her over the naming of a stuffed animal. Know who really needs to get whipped? The teddy bear. That son of a b**** is the one insulting Muhammad.

Realy my mind boggles that such a system exists that by naming an innanimate object after a small child who was in turn named after a prophet that forged the bloody (in both senses) Ottaman Empire, a teacher helping people is sentanced to jailtime and whipping.

A good friend of mine is a son of one of the Iranian premiers. He refused to do mandatory military service and made some rather rude comments about Allah.
Despite his father's position, he was jailed, tortured and was scheduled to be shot for Heresy. Thankfully, Amnesty International got him out before that could happen, but it did impress on me how seriously they take their religion over there.
I'm glad I live in Canada. No matter how ridiculous people act here sometimes,it could be much much worse.

Do they realize how much the rest of the world will resent them the more they pull this crap?
Honestly, who takes these people seriously? You certainly can't if you have any common sense at all. Do all the followers of Islam have ZERO common sense?

When you're the biggest religion in the world and one of the fastest growing you really dont care what the rest of the world thinks. Especially when your moderates (which make up the majority of the religion) like to keep to themselves. There are plenty of moderates who oppose this, but its rare for them to speak out...often in fear.
When you have followers willing to make vests out of plastic explosives and suicide themselves in a dance lounge full of teenagers the world takes you seriously. Especially when the world news media creams their pants over these stories with eye catching photos.
When everyone but their own nation is pre-occupied with pushing "multi-culturalism" on themselves so strongly despite the harm it does they realize the resentment will be fleeting and forgiven as a "cultural difference".
And finally, when you understand and live by the following axiom as they do you realize how easy it is to get away with murder:
Extremists go all the way. Moderates just tend to go away....
But back to the story. The kids named the bear, not the teacher and the name wasn't meant to be a religious thing. Mohammad is the most commonly used name in the world. This whole thing was to take eyes and pressure off of Darfur or some other domestic issue.

The least some of you could do is discuss and comment on this contextually. Sudan is a third world nation with outmoded Islamic beliefs. Why tar all Islamic nations and Muslims with the one brush? Is the Reborn Fundamentalist Christiniaty of the US representative of all of Christianity? I think not. Of course the action of jailing this teacher over calling a teddybear Mohammed is backward, but that is Sudan.

It is a little more complicated than that though. She worked in a Christian / Muslim school, especially created to foster good relations between the two relegions, and parents choose to send their children to that school.
She was following the teaching programme which was set down for her to follow.
She was teaching her class about democracy (as part of an overview of different political systems), and as such she allowed the children to nominate names for the bear, and then vote which would be used.
One of the children nominated his own name, and that is the one which was eventually selected.
A Muslim teacher in the school saw nothing disrestpectful at all about the project and the naming of the bear, if fact she was impressed that the teacher managed to get the children to vote.
Islam was one of the most enlightened relegions, embracing science in a way Christianity never would, and yet it seems to be going backwards. Fundamentalists (who actually fly in the face of the fundamentals of Islam, ironic) cause a disproportionate amount of trouble, and it is worrying.
Also, 40 lashes will not kill you as stated in this thread, because they aren't all given in one go - 40 for a woman would probably be 4 a day over 10 days.

There is probably a political agenda at work here. If I had to guess from the wording of statements by the Sudanese religious body involved I'd say the very existence of the school was offensive for some people and they'd just been waiting for "proof" that it was a bad idea.
They're being *****s about the UN peacekeeping effort to Darfur as well. EVE RELATED CONTENT |

I can go up to priest and disrespect his religion all day long, and I will not get lashes or go to prison. How long will it take the Islamic countries to get there? Do they want to get there? Do they truly want freedom?
Iron fisted rule of religion and brainwashing seems to be the norm for Islamic states. I don't see them changing anytime soon...

They didn't "come out of the dark ages" that long ago either, compared to how old the religions themselves are. I mean, come on, Spanish Inquisition ring a bell ? Or, for that matter, stuff that was going on not even 300 years ago in most of Europe or even the (now) USA ? Or what about the whole catholic-vs-orthodox issues that aren't completely quelled even nowadays ?

Maybe they did at one time in history, but that was quite a while ago, and civilization on the whole have evolved since then, except for the Islamic states that is.

85% of Islam is supposed to be Sunni, and only 15% is allegedly Shi'a. Shi'a are the ones that have the whole "Imam" thing, they are the religious fundamentalists, and they constitute a majority of most "Arabic" countries. Just because some sub-branches of the smaller main branch is all out of whack and on a fundamentalist spree doesn't give you the right to bash Islam as a whole as "condoning suicide bombing" and such.
Just to make a point, I have nothing to do with Islam, I find all religions to be equally laughable... I'm an agnostic leaning more and more towards atheism each day, and I grew up as Orthodox Christian. That doesn't mean I don't repect their right to their own beliefs. C|S|I|N|x. |

Overnight?
You think these Islamic states got that way overnight?
And we get to vote here in the US, something most Islamic followers around the world do not get to do... And of those who do get to vote, not many do so in a free & fair election...
This nation was built on Christianity yes, but as time goes on, the lines are getting blurred. Eventually, just like our racial melting pot, we'll experience a religious melding. We already have. The USA is more internally tolerant to other religions than any other nation on this planet, due to our democracy & separation of church and state. Yes we get politicians in office who can be extreme in their religion viewpoints and let that affect their policies, but they have a maximum rule of 8 years, as well as ~500 congressmen to deal with who definitely do not all share those identical religions belief's...
As time goes on, Christianity will lose it's tight grip on the US' government, and we will be better for it.
I see nothing like this occurring in any Islamic nation (of any importance that is). Not even close...
Will islamic countries ever be able to have separation of church & state? It certainly doesn't seem like it.

To clarify, I said Islamic STATES and not Islam itself. I find any mixing of Religion and Politics as disturbing, be it Islam Christianity or Pastifarian. I am atheist, I can see why people would want to follow a religion, but I have seen that the real world is cruel, and that promises of a better afterlife is common in all cultures first as a means to survival from a psycological point then turned to control of the lower classes. I find it a tad off that religious groups such as the Council of Britain are seen both as the authority on Islam and that a religion defines itself as peace instead of one aiming for it, there is a sublte difference

Your sweeping racist generalisations are both incorrect and wrong. You only need to look at the trouble the UK has had in the past and to some extent still today, with Christian terrorists killing others. They may not be suicide bombers but a terrorist is still a terrorist. Only this month the Real IRA have shot 2 unarmed police officers.

The difference is the Christian, western, nations do not bomb & kill in the name of their religion.
If there was no terrorism, there would be no Iraq & Afghanistan right now. Even though some of these Christian fundamentalists may want to do something, they will not under the pressure of all the other Christian nations.
When Islamic nations stop using guns to speak for their religion, Christian nations will stop attacking them.
I don't like any religion, religion is useless to humanity, unless they are weak minded. Since most people on this planet follow a religion, that does not speak highly of the world's intelligence IMO.
However, if you can't see the difference between the way a Christian nation operates and an Islamic nation operates, then you're either intentionally ignoring the difference or you're stupid.
Quote: That wasn't the point. Point was, what if, by some conjecture of events, somehow, "tomorrow" (as in, 5, 10, 100 years from now, whatever), the USA would become a fundamentalist Christian state.
You honestly think that would happen? It's going the other way if anything...
Who was the last Christian state who went around the world, converting, and basically raping & pillaging in the name of their religion? (hint: you live there) Don't you think that was the last of them? Christianity is losing it's grip on even the western nations it created... So I don't see what your point is. Christianity has already rose up, and defeated that mentality when all the British colonies revolted and created their own governments, many who now separate church & state.

Yes, that's honestly where I perceive USA as heading towards, Christian fundamentalism... with the justice system having people swear on the Bible (at least they ask you if you're Christian), with Bibles in most hotel nightstands, with political candidates "touting their belief in God" higher and stronger each campaign, and so on and so forth. Unfortunatly in the UK we have had these problems since before WW1 with the Dominion of Ireland's seperation from the UK as a Catholic majority to form the Republic of Ireland. The majority Protestant population of Ulster, was left as a part of the UK (Northern Ireland), and the IRA has waged a terrorist campaighn against Britian for decades as a seperatist movement, the Loyalist UVA and British Armed Forces against the IRA. This is the reason Britian is so adept at fighting anti terrist campaighns in the middle east - we have veterans from Northern Ireland, and as it is also a Protestant/Catholic dispute that disproves your point about Christianity.

Would guys like Bush be able to do what he did if Islamic fundamentalists did not open the door for him? Absolutely not.
And if anything, this last War with Iraq has taught the world an important lesson, one which will not be repeated anytime soon. And one which will not have to be, as oil from this point on will only decrease as the main energy supply for many nations.
All I can say is it will be interesting to see what the Islamic countries do when they no longer get most of their revenue from oil to fund their extremist campaigns...
And again, if you think the USA attacked Iraq for oil only, you're purposely being ignorant.

Where would you place yourself, intelligence wise, compared to the majority of the world's population?
Again - you are failing to read the words I actually typed.
What I see is lots of nasty little tin pot despots appealing to "Islam" as an excuse for whatever it is they feel like doing at any given moment and as a way to invoke general anti-US/west sentiment.
I see religion being used or misused as a tool to engage in rabble rousing. EVE RELATED CONTENT |

All religions do this, Islam does it the most, and to the most extreme's. That's why we get these Teddy Bear and R@pe victim stories.
As far as human intelligence. I'd rather associate with people who follow their common sense and scientifically proven factual information as opposed to fabricated parables or rules & laws decreed by shaman in the names of their deities.
There of course is a lot of religious followers who are more intelligent than I, but I view their belief in their religion as a flawed human trait...
Some humans need drugs to cope with life, some need religion. I don't see much of a difference, both are fundamentallly flawed creatures.
The protesters calling for this teachers death over a teddy bear should clue you in on how brainwashed an ignorant these particular humans are.

Of course not, but this argument that because some Christians still fight amongst themselves, while the vast majority do not, and would not attack Islamic followers based on the same fundamentalism that exists in these isolated groups has no affect on the current issue in the Middle East.
So a few Christians still want to kill over religion. Do we let these few control most Christian nations like Islamic fundamentalists do? No.

I'm not changing anything...
If you think that there are as many Christian fundamentalists in the world, in control of nations states around the world as there are Islamic fundamentalists in control, then you're the one who's flawed.
The conflict in Ireland is a zit on the ass of Christianity. The Islamic fundamentalist movement defines the whole of Islam around the world.
If you can't see that, then you're not living in reality...
Why don't you compare apples to apples and tell me that there is more sectarian violence within christianity than there is within Islam?
Or tell me that more Christians dance in the streets when Islamic followeres die than the vice versa?
I never said 100% of Christians are immune to fundamentalism, or lack the ability to kill for their religion. If you inferred that absolute, that's your error not mine.

Both sides of that arguement have points and a grain of truth in them..... As far as my knowlege of Islam is, there is a concept called Umar or something pronounced like that, which is Islam's stated goal of a global Islamic nation. Again, not to belittle that, it's certainly a tragedy. However, the Western-Islamic struggle affects many more people, and will continue to do so until the peace loving Islamic followers stand up to the fundamentalists and remove them as the figureheads of their religion... No amount of US bombs can make that happen... It will take strong leaders of men to make that happen.

Said strong leader's are killed before they can do anything. The system is flawless, the strong elect new member's who are strong and follow their interpretation of Islam. Anyone who can oppose this is killed as a heretic, spreading information is also controled by the state. I would reckon that 99% of the people who can make a difference are dead before they get to the point of doing anything. In this case outside support is needed, it can be said it isn't our problem and it is too large to do anything, we can either wait and hope for the best while keeping our guns bigger than theirs to keep them in their borders or invade, breakup and remove the previous rulers. I would think that since the religion and state are so integrated, that an attack on one would be seen as an attack on the other and hence a nationalitic situation occurs and liberators are seen as oppressors from their perspective. Look at Iraq now for instance, I would like to think that it was for liberating that we went in and for a part it seems that was part of the myriad of reasons, Oil was a priority of course, spoils of war and all, but Iran will not fall until pushed.

Iran has the best hope of coming out of the Islamic dark ages without war IMO. They seem to have the most progressive young population of any Islamic nation out there. They seem to be more resilliant to the brainwashing than other Islamic nations.
With Iran, I think you definitely can take the wait and see approach. Even if you "let" them get nuclear weapons.
To do that however, the West needs a strong ally in the region, that is what Iraq is for, as Saudi Arabia has failed the West time and time again... Bush knows this, and having Iraq as an asset to the West's' goals and hopes for the region is paramount. More important than any oil we get from them at a reduced price...
So for the next 10-50 years while we wait for Iran to mature, we will have our 50,000 US troops as well as some other nations troops based there to keep an eye on Iran, and keep them in check.
It will work, it will just take time & resolve. Many Western nations lack the resolve as they are too liberal IMO...

Liberalism is the will of the people so it happens, thats the beauty of our system, that our policies change with the times the world enters. At the moment we have completed rebuilding after WW2, have come out the other side of the cold war and Eastern Europe being integrated back into Europe after communism. We have made our bread and eaten it, we now know how our actions can have lasting reactions so are cautious as a society today. Incidentaly, this just popped up on the BBC.

I'm of the opinion that a "West" that is too liberal will not take the required action to bring about true change in the ME.
Bush's action may very well be the last time a leader of a Western nation takes actions similar to those of times past. I sure hope his actions do bring about the Iraqi ally we will so desperately need in 50 years, because the USA is on the path to an EU type liberalism, and there is no turning back IMO. And that type of Liberalism is a doormat to Extreme Fundamentalism IMO.
So let's hope Iraq becomes what many Western nations wanted Saudi Arabia to be many decades ago...
If not, we can expect many more incidents like this teacher debacle to occur for many more decades to come, all over the world.

A hope in hells chance. Bush is deluded if he thinks his actions will create an ally in the Middle East. Its alienated even the moderate states in the Middle East and pretty much most of Europe.
The only people happy about it are Israel which is one of the reasons for the invasion. Secure Israel from rogue WMDs and they agreed to a new peace deal in Palestine. So the region could be stablised-ish. only problem is the Iraqis aren't that greatful and Israel only paid lip service to the new peace deal.
If you saw the news at the time days after the 'victory' was announced so was the latest road map to peace.

We know the long term perspective.
Even when you turn up in a country and give them a health service, education, railway lines and power stations eventually they rise try to kill you and kick you out.
The government are keen to keep troops there because they know they're a puppet government and will be slaughtered when they leave. They're seen as an American government. People aren't going to thank us for killing millions of innocents and destroying their country. All its doing is breeding more hatred.
Relations with the US and the Middle East are always going to be fraught for one reason. Israel!
We (UK) get away with it a bit more as we opposed the creation of Israel. We had to pull out of Jerusalem as we were being attacked by the Jews and Arabs. We tried to forge a peace but it was never going to happen.

You know, this whole thing is utterly stupid..why? . It's got nothing to do with Islam really. It is basically a Anti-Westen Govenment making a example and a statement, Sudan's version on Shira (sp?) law is not the same as other Islamic nations and the only purpose of this is to increase the tension of anti-westen and anti-islamics.
If it was really that bad British Muslim Leaders would not say this is a outrage and would not be heading out there on a special mission to gain a early release for her.

Why is 'God with America' and why do American Christians see fit to try and control what all other christians in the west should do and say ( I.E. - the movie Golden Compass row), America also has some of the most fanatical christians i have ever seen or heard in my life and their all over the t.v aswell!, you lot did not find it first, we have a thing called a POPE to say whats right or wrong for christans.
Sort your own nutjobs out at home first before you shout and cry about something that people have been perfectly happy with long before America was even a glint in Imperial Britain/Europes eye.

Most people who interact with Muslims on a daily basis know that they are good people and believe in peace through Islam.
However, its not the peaceful ones that make headlines. Its not the peaceful ones that stage protests or condemn evil acts very loud in public. Its not the peaceful ones who come to mind of a westerner when the word "muslim" is mentioned. Oh there have been some attempts to bring their image back into good standing but very little has been done. Personally I dont think its the noise the fanatics make that scares everyone as much as the silence from the "moderates" against it.

You say you hate government meddling in your affairs, taxing you for the good of other citizens, and yet you advocate your government to control other regions of the world and reap from thing that which you can benefit.

Well lets see how to trash your pitiful arguement.
First, like you (and every other religion or atheist) Christian groups feel that they are the right ones and everyone else is wrong. Like you and everyone else, they want to influence their ways to others. Like you and everyone else, what they say only applies to those that are willing to follow it. Like you and everyone else, the "others" are all crazy and fanatical.
Jumping up on a stage and screaming "halleluya, amen pass the plate around again!!" is not being fanatical. Funny yes but fanatical no. Neither is voting against something your religion does not support. Does your brain even understand what fanaticism really constitutes? Hanging a woman because she was driving around in a car with another man is fanatical. Blowing yourself up in a market full of little old ladies is fanatical.
Then there is the Pope issue. You know, that kind of group leader kind of person. The same thing as an CEO, general, president, prime minister, etc. You know, the person that directs his/her people. I'm trying to figure out how you make a group leader type to be a bad thing. This is sort of one of those things that Islam could really benefit from but their attempts to form a unified college of leaders has failed too often.

So to name someone after him is praise and guarantees heaven. But naming an object is considered as sin.

Difference is, the Christian nut jobs can say all they want to say to us, we're still free to choose. That's not the case in most Islamic states... You get lashed to death or your head gets cut off... Nice...
And DV, it's humanity's right to change civilizations that want to kill for superfluous reasons.
The USA is not the only country that wants Islamic states to change their tune, we happen to be the ONLY ones willing to do something about it.
But don't fret, soon the USA will be as liberal as the EU, and we'll let the extremists walk all over us, and terrorize us and, not fight back, because we don't want to offend anyone of the Islamic faith, as it's the most peacful religion on the planet...
So yeah, as long as the USA has the ability to change nations who do not conform to what we want, we're going to intervene. Don't sit here and tell me China won't be doing the same thing in ~50 years, or sooner...

Naw, rediculous is when they lash a *****victim for being in the company of a non-relative when she was attacked. I think they lashed the non-relative male as well. For good measure, they should lash the judge for hearing about a non-relative female being raped.

i haven't read all the replies to this post. but here is my two pennys worth from the POV of a brit. When you go to ANY foreign country (espiecally one with a muslim relgion) you should know the rules of the land and obey the rules of the land. If this teacher had any brains at all, she would have known that being white in a muslim world, calling ANYTHING by the name of the profit would not go down well, she was stupid and naive in the ulitmate sense! Personaly she has gotten off extremely lightly with just 15 days in prison then deportation, it could have been a LOT worse, but what is going to happen, she is going to appeal the sentance! I mean get with the program love...15 days in the clink ain't gonna kill you, especially now you have been moved to a decent one, in just over 2 weeks you will be out, and free to go home and put the whole mistake behind her...but now she will have to go through a re-trail and you can bet bottom dollar that they will drag that one out without any chance of bail....let this be a lesson learnt, you can't go around insulting over peoples religions (especially muslims) and get away with it! BTW this message is posted by someone who couldn't give a toss about religion in any form! So looking at this from a totally neutral POV.
She broke the rules, she got off lightly, do the time, don't complain and she may leave with her life....

That's kind of how I feel about it as well. Religion is not the cause of what's going on, it's just become an excuse for some people to try and justify their own twisted motives and convince others to do the same.

Britain doesn't give the Government of Sudan aid, it gives aid to those Sudanese citizens in Darfur suppressed by their own government for being neither Arabic nor Muslim. The hardliners in Khartoum would probably be happy to see the flow of that aid cut off as they continue their campaign of genocide.

Religion bothers me from the point of view if need to read a book that tells you how to treat other human beings instead of it being an obvious and natural instinct, then you're fundamentally evil. Hence religion is a good thing because otherwise these people who need guidance would be a nightmare to live with.
Some people are however are that evil that they subvert the religion and carry out acts and actually shift the blame to the book that they've misunderstood.

These protests though, and the behavior of these people protesting are being allowed and encouraged by the government of Sudan. |
