I can tell you. It was the same for me the first time and it takes time to get accustomed to it.
Many people keep imagining things that have absoluteoy no ground in game reality. For someone like me, that's pretty hard to deal with.
The roleplaying scene in EVE ONLINE seems to be pretty crappy, especially when one considers the fact that literally everyone is a roleplayer in this game, because ones actions actually change something for others, unlike to all the lesser games where it's irrelevant what you do.
Many roleplayers here seem to be pretty disconnected and purely escapists ... ... oh and please don't even start about CODE. xD
I have met quite a few exceptionally well role players though like Diana Kim, who even manages a proper Achuran accent ... ... or members from Gradient ... (hey honey I miss you!) ... the former core of Electus Matari ... (you don't **** with Electus Matari, seriously) ... and quite a few others.
Otoh there are a few a bit disturbed people ... ... some who are even found in this thread .......... ...... and some who are even worse and use RP as excuse to live out fetishes ... ...... you do not, in no way, want to know about.
When you are confronted with the imagination of a person who wants to cut your ***** open with a razor then you know things went wrong at some point .... ... and no, "roleplaying" is no excuse for desires that are hurtfull .......
I need to stop this post before I trigger thoughts I need to avoid, sorry ..... .... but although there are quite a few sick escapists among us ... ... in general people are okay ... ... but the RP needs some getting used to. http://residentoutlaw.tumblr.com - CODE, RvB, the AT, and what DJEntropy said .... :) The Mew Age Calender is in need of models! ..wow
I read a few of the posts and the sheer lack of anchorage to reality - or even to the game for that matter - is astounding. I don't mind a bit of RP in the form of storytelling, hence why I don't mind EVE fiction - even post occasionally myself.
Escapism was actually my first thought, though the level of detail and content hits you like a train. In MMO's where you can see and interact with "people" it isn't so hard to imagine. Though in EVE, conceptualising the empires politics / populations etc is difficult when you can't actually see them at all. The closest I've ever seen are the few EVE books that were published (which I read as a teenager).
As for the sex stuff - that just creeps me out. Thankfully I haven't come across it.

Yeah for sure, avatar gameplay isn't something I'd ever suggest for EVE. I wouldn't change it - just saying without an experienced "RP brain" and good knowledge of the lore etc. a lot of it can appear disjointed from anything you can relate to. Not a negative of course, just an observation. I think the real problem is that I find it increasing difficult to achieve full immersion as I get older, due to a busy RL and job. So the "shallowness" you describe is not necessarily always the case - perhaps just a result of a mind occupied with a thousand other issues!
As for erotic roleplay, as you say, it has a lot of forms both in the real world and online - and in both arenas it can be pretty shocking - so no judgement from me.
