Just a pity that the golem isn't better then a Caldari Navy Raven as far as DPS goes. Looting, sure but while the price will be 1 bil or more i'll be avoiding it.
Kronos... maybe :P, i'm close, only need Adv. Weapon upgrades V (so about a month)

Actually - I don't understand why the Golem would not have greater DPS than a CNR. The Golem only has 4 launcher hard points but it has 100% increased damage for cruise missiles and torpedoes which makes this the equivalent of 8 regular launchers. On the other hand, the CNR only has 7 launchers - so I would think that a Golem should have about 14% more base DPS than a CNR. Of course, this may depend on how many BCS's are mounted in the low slots but with diminishing returns factored in there won't be more than 3 or 4 on either ship.
As for the question in the thread - I am probably about 70 days from flying a Marauder :) - I need BS 5, AWU 4,5 and Energy Grid Upgrades 5 brfore I can fly a Golem.

it would IF the golem had retained the std raven bonus which is 10% missile speed and 5% ROF but the golem only gets the speed bonus and not the ROF. now @ lvl 5 that's 33% dps difference with the CNR inching ahead.

Not as fast as CNR, as CNR has 16 % more dps. That is roughly equal being 16% faster in missions than Golem. And as far as looting goes ... well ... anyone who is caring about mission running effectivity is usually not looting and doing missions in the same ship, but are using separate ship (with salvage rigs) for looting, if they bother with looting at all.
Can use golem (for looting) as soon as I train the relevant skill to level 1.

But dps isnt everything. You'll be fighting mostly small ships in lvl 4s, meaning the other bonuses on the golem are HIGHLY usefull. And add a target painter with +30% effectiveness (at skill lvl 4) and I suspect Golem will be much faster than CNR for lvl 4s. And as i searched I even found a thread to confirm.
You might kill bs very very slightly slower, but you'll kill everything else much faster!

I did test it on Sisi some time ago and my CNR was still faster (i dont' know the exact fitting but it was something with torps/TP's/missile range rigs, all relevant skills maxed) It's tank was a bit weak but enough for all lvl4 missions. Only in missions with very little BS rats the Golem was quicker. Overall the CNR was quicker.
If you want to do lvl4 missions easy and still pretty quick a Golem is probably a very good choice.

Edited by: Kerfira on 07/12/2007 10:19:27 While the Golem has less DPS than the CNR, it has several things that (imho) offsets that.
- It has higher alpha damage. This means that some ships will pop in one shot less
- The target painter bonus means cruisers and below go down faster
- You don't need a shield boost amp since its got one built in
- Lower ammo usage means faction missiles become much more attractive
- You can fit 3 tractor beams with 40km range. This means you can do a lot of the looting while you're killing ships, but more importantly that you can gather all/most wrecks in one location. This'll speed up post-battle salvage/looting a LOT!
- Extra resists. Not a lot, but it all helps
So, even though it has theoretical lower DPS, I think a cruise Golem WILL speed up mission running quite a bit compared to a cruise CNR.
On-topic: Got AWU 5 to go, but won't do that for a while since I'm maxing my logistics (and all related) skills first. Wanna let the price of the Golem stabilise a bit first too before I buy one.

AWU5 Marauders 1 Gallente Battleship 1-5
Then I'd be in a Kronos. Except I don't really want a Kronos, or to buy the Gallente Battleship skill.
So, probably a year away from a Marauder. When the price gets cheaper, and I'm starting to run out of other things to train, I'll get a Kronos, stuff 2 salvage tackle rigs in it, and make it my mission cleanup ship. Tractor beam bonus <3

1) Higher alpha can also mean more 'wasted' firepower if you do overkills. On the CNR, if you are competent you can divide your firepower more precisly and do less overkills. On small enough targets their ability to get in one repper cykle is still mostly irrelevant due the small hp buffer.
2) Cruisers - yes. However I'm also using target painter in my CNR setups (with proper support skills and signature reduction hardwire) and I can also one volley cruisers. With higher RoF on my launchers I thus can kill cruisers faster than Golem. Figates - I use T2 drones for them and don't see any reason to shoot at them with battleship class weapons (except in 2 missions where using drones on them will cause mass agro)
3) I already don't need shield boost amp for level 4 missions. My mid slots are XL t2 booster, 3x T2 hardeners, 1x PWNAGE painter and 1x heavy cap injector II. I do not have any propblems tanking level 4 missions long enough to complete them without warpouts.
4) I already using faction ammo. I'm doing 16 % more damage than Golem and using 43 % more ammunition. For me doing more damage and using more ammo is more profitable than it would be doing missions with less damage (slower missions) and saving on ammo. Then again it is somewhat personal depending on your mission running strategy, what is price of your LP and your SP in relevant fields. Most likely for casual missionrunner (longer missions taking over 1h) Golem might be easier solution.
5) No doubt Golem is awesome for looting missions. However looting, like missions is most effective if you have setup dedicated for it. You know, tractors and salvagers and salvage rigs and so on. So most specialized missionrunners will most likely get themselves one of the marauders for looting, however that looting marauder will have dedicated setup for that and will be used like looting destroyers are used currently, to loot and salvage missions after it's completed. Collecting it all into one place is ofcource advantage, but I doubt that if you run missions fast enough you have free loking slots to drag wreks around. My CNR can lock 10 targets (same as unmodifed golem) and I are quite busy loking new targets all the time to not run out of targets in most missions.
6) Extra resists. Yep. But even T1 Raven can tank level 4 missions with just T2 equipment, so tanking is not an issue for level 4 missions. Tanking will not help you do missions faster, your ability to kill your targets fast is what makes your mission running speed.
With all that I'm not trying to say that Golems are pointless or even bad ships. They are not. They will not be faster than competent CNR pilot however in missions no matter what you fit on it. They sure will be easier / need less attention than CNR.

To answer your question...now.
They are way over priced to buy atm and with the proper skills a bs isn't needed to complete level 4 missions (at least prior to trinity). I use a nighthawk for all level 4's.
I think they will be most useful in level 5's where you can salvage and kill at the same time. Since you will have to do level 5's in low sec, a specialized setup for just looting/salvaging is more risky this the this ship fits the bill. I think used in a group, it would be an awesome addition. -------------------------------------------------- Mission Runners United

I could fly one in however many minutes it took to train Marauder I.
I don't see any point in it though so I don't intend to. I fly command ships with CS 5. What would I gain from a Marauder? It has less of a resist bonus, won't do much more damage and the tractor bonus is useless since I use a 4 tractor/4 salvager setup to loot. The only benifit I can see for my billion+ investment would be the ability to fit 2 large smartbombs to kill frigates.
Is 2 SBs enough to justify a billion isk? Not for me.
Disapointing really.

Other than it has no usefulness in my eyes for level 4 missions. I dont care if it has better tank than navy raven... I dont need better tank for level 4s, I can handle angel bonus room with a caldari navy XL shield booster. However its always nice to have more gank...and it just wont have more gank than my raven with those crappy bonuses it has.
Words can not convey how crap I think the gollem is. Navy raven ftw.

- Golem need a sensor booster even more than CNR (loss of dps without it). - 4 launchers (virtual 8 because of bonus) its worse than 7 launchers and with 25% rof (CNR). - Painters.. +30% to 36% painter (best named with skills at 4) gives 46% - its nothing, and high duration and low optimal doesnt help much, painter on CNR is enought. - Explosion velocity bonus is useless. Ships on missions dont fly so fast (except spider drones but its maybe 0.01% of total npc) so that bonus doesnt help at all. Explosion velocity on cruise with skills at 4 and implant is around 735 which are enought (on CNR). - Shield boost bonus is also useless, because all lvl4 is doable solo in t1 raven (if someone have money for marauder, better is to buy a LG Crystal set and standard Raven which have same dps as Golem) and for lvl5 tank on golem is too weak. - Finaly: Time to train Golem can be used for skills like Drone Interfacing or missile skills at lvl5, which increase difference in DPS Golem vs CNR.
Salvaging? If you do that (i dont) faster is to make BM's then back with Hurricane (>3100m3 with t1 rigs and t2 cargo exp, 4x tractor, 4x salvager, Sensor booster, cap battery and MWD, second AB in same time if you salvage sometimes in deadspace). As for speeds 350ms with AB or 10000ms with MWD with very crappy navigation skills.

Need AWU from 4 to 5 and EGU from 4 to 5. Then will train Marauder to 4 and buy a Golen. I only loot what i can while i kill stuff so i think it will be more isk efficient. Instead of 1 tractor on the Navy Raven will be 2 awesome tractors and one salvager for those BS wrecks. Will definitely be using faction ammo. It¦s also 10 m/s faster. Anyway my goal is to get one with brand new stuff along a nightwauk so i can fly different ships. Other advantage is a little bit less clicking.
