Am I just behind the curve as usual, or have they announced the names for the drone regions yet? On the Influence Map they've been labeled already with the names that were chosen. I'm too lazy to list them here, but I can accurately say that the majority of them sound pretty stupid.
Any thoughts?

 They sound better then what they were... ie random numbers & letters
It's all subjective. Whether they sound good or not is not really the question. Point is that if I'm not mistaken, they were chosen by a commission.

Yeah they are pretty terrible names. It say segment the drone regions, make it easier and rename it World of Spacecraft because you could easily mistake those names for fantasy mmo zones. It would need to be a terrible mmo to actually name there zones that though.

My first thought is that if the names chosen for the regions were to reflect the current inhabitants main attribute; the fact that they sound stupid would be in strict accordance this criteria, especially so for the drone regions.

The Spire is an actual place in WoW.
Etherium Reach and Cobalt Edge I am unsure about, as I haven't played in 10 months+, but they could be. One of the main ores in WoW is Etherium, and alot of places have names after it. Cobalt is a race you often meet, so "Cobalt Edge" is also very likely to be an actual palce.

ok, now i see your point. I didnt really think CCP would let their regions be named after ACTUAL WoW areas etc.
lets hope the wow developers sue ccp or something then, because i doubt they will change it now.
you have got to wonder though, who the hell decided to name them after wow areas/resources....

Etherium Reach: East of molden heath, North of Great Wildlands, home of Ethereal Dawn
The Kalevala Expanse: Smash/Roadkill/Pure territory, accessible from Germinate and Etherium Reach.
Malpais: Home to IRON and others, next to Kalevala Expanse.
Perrigen Falls: East of Malpais, west of Outer Passage, home to Dark Matter Coalition
Oasa: near Perrigen Falls, also home to DMC, as well as others.

The only true part of your post is the first. But I'm sure a host of other worlds created, fantasy and sci-fi have places named that.
No ore is named Etherium, and there are no places named after the variation you may be thinking of. Also.. 'Kobold'. Not cobalt. Kobolds are fantasy creatures. Cobalt is a metal used in high strength alloys.

I had a hand in those. But My design for 7k was Reach, And H3 was Edge. But unfortunately others suggested Cobalt and Etherium. CCP just Fused em :(

So it's used, but I guess it mostly reminds people of kobolds :D
For the Etherium case however it's much much worse!
It reminds people of EtherNium ore (very common ore after TBC)
EtherEum is also a very commom word used for the "Kael'Thas"-like world. Alot of mobs is called after it, there is even a places called after it:

- Ethereum Prison

- Ethereum ethereals (I'm not gonna list individually, but there are many)

ALOT OF ITEMS also got this name
Conclusion:
Cobalt is used merely in WoW but it my remind people of Kobolds.
Etherium is not used, however it's easy to mix it with Ethernium or Ethereum!

So my region is now the Cobalt Edge. Ok, I could be cool with that. However, having surveyed EVERY DAMM MOON THREE TIMES (they reseeded cuz they forgot to the first time, then had bad seed second time) I can state with relative certainty that there is NO Cobalt in the Cobalt Edge.
So: Does this mean we get a reseed yet again, or will the name to be changed to 'No Minerals Found Edge'?

I submitted Etheria for 7-K, as I wanted to stamp Ethereal Dawn's name on it in a good way, and someone went and twisted it round to some apparently WoW-similar name.
The drone regions just got that bit more sucky.

As stated, Rule's bid was on Edge. I understand Mostly Harmless suggested something like Cobalt Reach or Cobalt Expanse. Our best guess is that CCP tried to compromise between ours since we have fairly even shares of the region.
Unfortunately, Cobalt Edge just sounds silly. If it was a choice between this or MH's suggestion, whether it was Reach or Expanse, I'd take the latter, as it is much more fitting.
("Edge" started as "Edge of (something)" but I insisted we shorten it down to just Edge--it's fitting, given we're on the edge of known space, one of the furthest regions from empire.)

No, but honestly. It's not like a station name that you can just enter into a field and change. Those regions are staying like that, and they seriously blow donkey harbl.

I love this game but that is a horrible for your ingame advertisement and appeal, you want ppl to say at the next Leipzig Game Convention: "Here is some ingame footage of a Thorax Hull ship blasting its way through an enemy ambush fleet" and ppl to say oh yea that is EvE Online.
This is what you dont want: "Here is a video of a Paladin flying through Etherium falls" and then having ppl saying that reminds me of WOW.
Your advertising one of your rivals, and eliminating the uniqueness of EvE.

As someone who lives outside of Northern Europe, I can tell you that Kalevala is pretty much unknown.
For the record, I suggested the name (minus the "Expanse").
You can take the names of most things in Eve and look them up in Wikipedia and find out where they come from. I do this a lot when I'm waiting for scan probe results. I've learned a hell of a lot about Greek and Egyptian cultures as a result.
I figured, "Why not Finnish?" Didn't plan to offend anyone, just hoped to enrich a few people.

I am confident that each of the people that were on that naming council had more 6-7 names recommended and not all of them were related to any other game out there. I was on that council and I know I submitted over 20 and close to 35 different name suggestions.
However we were informed before hand that the concord rep (DEV) would have the final say on the names. We received a eve mail back with the 4 names that had been narrowed down by region and we were allowed to only make 2 choices from them. After that we had received no word on what the names would be until they were released with the last patch. So honestly, if you think they were bad names, you perhaps should look at the Concord rep (DEV) and ask them WHY? instead of pointing at the council members.
I will admit, if I had it my way the names would be different and perhaps the council members would of had more time then 4-5 days to come up with names. I would have made a post for people on the forums to come up with names but too late now.
As for now, I think it is better then referring to them by letter and number combination names.

Etherium is a bit lame because it's blatant self promotion, and Outer Passage gave me a bit of a giggle. Was hoping to see a "The Hive", but not really that bothered. Mostly they don't suck any harder than a lot of the rest- "Etherium" or "Immensea". "Oasa" or "Fountain". "Outer Passage" or "Scalding Pass". Its all much of the same.
I'm just glad it's not alphanumerics any more. I could never remember where we're supposed to live. "8...somethingsomethingsomething".

Unfortunately, Cobalt Edge just sounds silly. If it was a choice between this or MH's suggestion, whether it was Reach or Expanse, I'd take the latter, as it is much more fitting.
("Edge" started as "Edge of (something)" but I insisted we shorten it down to just Edge--it's fitting, given we're on the edge of known space, one of the furthest regions from empire.)
Agreed, Edge was my idea. Then it got bastardiesd in cobalts edge which sounds dumb. Same with Reach being changed by ED to Etherium Reach, shameless self promotion.
