Slightly more on topic it never ceases to amaze me how "civilized" people seem to feel the need to make certain parts of their vocabulary taboo. It seems that these words are picked almost at random and that their elevation to "curse word" status merely increases their use.
I'm not talking about CCP here, we all have to live with the rules of "civilized society", but I for one find such restrictions on language immature, petty, and a mockery of the very idea free speech.
To please both sides I would like to see the filter made optional as many other parental controls are. I think I'm old enough to decide for myself and I very much dislike the idea of the entire community being restrained by what I personally consider a lunatic fringe of etiquette zealots who believe politeness is a reason to insult, harass, and threaten people all in the name of proper use of English while failing to realize the world has changed and language itself evolves.

It is unreasonable to demand the Mods be able to judge all the offensive words in all of the parent languages we might be using. Therefore they use filtering tools. Sometimes these tools are overzealous in their filtering. That is the price we pay in this age of internet correctness. Perhaps if more people could be more mature in their usage, we wouldn't need these filters.
Now, that is a neat trick.

I won't tell you who I learned it from, but I learned it within the past few days. I'd only use it to access legitimate words otherwise obscured by filters, if I were you. Otherwise we'll all lose. It's not a trick, and I shouldn't have done it in GD. ----- TANSTAAFL

I'm not going to lie, I want to be able to sware. It's legitimate use of the English language to express emotions, often displeasure or anger but that's not my point. Words like Sadd4m, G4y, N4zi, Cr4cker etc. should not be blocked. I'm fed up of being treated like a child by the damn internet, we shouldn't have to stand for this. Why can't we discuss Sadd4m or homosexuality? Are our delicate minds going to melt or something?
Let's just have a little test here. George W. Bush. Was that filtered? I doubt it, yet he's more of a tyrant than any other political leader alive today.
Political correctness is the language of cowardice. It's like I described in the topic about why religion and politics are banned from discussion in "Out Of Pod" (effectively making the whole section nothing more than spam and 'celebrity gossip news'). We have no freedom in the forums and it's sickening to be treated like this. The forum is supposed to be for the EVE community, a community that's largely adults, treat us like adults and make the forum suited for it's target audience.

The use of profane or vulgar language is not something that is appropriate to a forum dedicated to a game open to people of all ages.
While the average age might be in the mid twenties (though I've not seen any empirical data to support that claim) there are a large number of teens and preteens that play EVE.
Such language does not assist in making any arguments or in getting a point across. All such language serves is to demean, belittle, and harass other individuals.
I seriously doubt those of you claiming you can use such language at work would keep your jobs long if you used such to your boss or co worker or even to customers in the process of that work. Yes you might could use it in the break room or at the water cooler, but you'd quickly find yourself in hot water using it in other places I highly suspect.

I'd suppose that if they allowed these words, someone, somewhere, would have the brilliant idea of being offended by the letter combination and might try to sue CCP. So they're trying to be safe by blocking these words so no one can find an excuse for sueing and/or making troubles.
I'd hope I'm wrong, but I don't doubt there are people willing to do that(suing over a word). -------------------------------------------------- I'm a rich person. How I know? I can afford to be a miner. |

Edited by: SoftRevolution on 27/12/2007 11:18:58 The language filter is ricockulous.
Some of the words it will filter are fairly mindbendingly stupid.
"***"? Who uses that as an insult? I could just call someone a "Raving cottaging enthusiast" instead.
*****? What? I mean really. Is that to stop us misuing CCP's forum for nefarious fissure related discussions?
Some of the words it doesn't filter are pretty stupid too :/ I hate having to self-edit my own swearing so it doesn't look like I'm trying to sneakily get around the filter.
I also find the rules about being nice to everybody vaguelly objectionable (some people need insulting and harassing) but that's another whinge. EVE RELATED CONTENT |

I would love to see every post with more than one "!" or "1!1" or "eve!n11!1!!" type phrase, pwn, or other stupid jargon removed, but I'll be happy with what I have for now.

I doubt I would be fired for using a word like mar*** (a small catlike species living in southern america). Yet it is filtered, giving warnings for inappropiate language is 1 thing having some lame filter filtering out all word combinations that can be made with certain letters is just plain stupid.
Also please tell me why a word would be inappropiate for minors while not a problem for grown ups? I really doubt any word will be "new" for them and if you think they are then I would say you really need to get a reality check :>. --- -The only real drug problem is scoring real good drugs |

Is assassin filtered?
Anyways I don't see why anyone would argue for a filter? If the filter is in place for legal reasons then by all means keep it in place. If it's in place for anything other then that please get rid of them. Make all the business comparisons you want, just keep in mind EVE is a game and the forums are for the players who play the game not the employees.

A grade school teacher in Kentucky asked her students to use The word fascinate" in a sentence.
Molly put up her hand and said, "My family went to my granddad's Farm, and we all saw his pet sheep. It was fascinating."
The teacher said, "That was good, but I wanted you to use the word "fascinate, not fascinating".
Sally raised her hand. She said, "My family went to see Rock City and I was fascinated."
The teacher said, "Well, that was good Sally, but I wanted you To use The word "fascinate."
Little Johnny raised his hand. The teacher hesitated Because she had been burned by Little Johnny before.
She finally decided there was no way he could damage the word "fascinate", so she called on him.
He said, "My aunt Bessie has a sweater with ten buttons, but her T1ts are so big she can only fasten eight."

Unless it would cause EVE Online trouble that could lead to the game being closed down we don't need this filter, and before people say that CCP would be sued, no-one has ever successfully sued an internet forum for containing swear words. It would be laughed out of any court room, it's just plain rediculas. What is the reason for this filter? What is it's purpose other than to annoy people who happen to type a word with g, a and y in that order somewhere in the letter configuration that happens to have occured in the English Language?
CCP fix this now. It's irritating and insulting to the very group that buy your product and therefore pay your wages. Sort it out and stop mothering us.

Because obviously if we where discussing anything on the forums we couldn't possibly use the word cr4ck to talk about something that has split, snapped, chipped or in any other way broken... no we must be talking about recreational drugs and naturally if we read the slang term for this drug we will immediately start trading it and start drug rings... probably by bit-torrent, after all torrenting is evil as well...
Ok. I'm all sarcasmed out. CCP, GET OFF YOUR ARSE AND SORT THIS OUT. IT'S PATHETIC. At the very least just block actually obscene words. I can understand the blocking of words such as (and you'll need to press "quote" to read these) ****, ****, **** etc. They serve no purpose other than to be obscene. But we don't need such overzelous filters. It's irritating and insulting.

Would it be too hard to implement a similar system used on X-Box Live. You could select a forum based on the language, EG Extreme = Anything goes Moderate = A few naughty words but none beginning in F, C or S..... Family = No Smack Talk Carebare = Only people on E telling each other how much this community just needs to give each other more hugs.
