How often would you respond to a random person in local asking to run lvl 4s with them?
If never what are your reasons?
Dont trust them? Want all the loot for yourself?
I recently did a few with a random, and it was fun as hell and quicker. It was a nice change since i find most people do not interact with those outside their corp.
Im sure you all have some horror stories.

3 main reasons.
1. I tend to run where there are over 100 people in local, nt uncommon for a L4 agnet. so local at times just has garbage in it.
2. My corp. I can usualy find others that are running L4s that will partner up.
3. Ignorance on my side. I know that bing corp mates allows them to fire on me, not sure about being in gang with them. As I said ignorance.

Generally, you shouldn't trust anybody in Eve. The whole culture of this game is rather dark. If there was one game that shows the ugliest side of human nature, this game would be it. Thus, trust no one and always be ready to deal with any situation is the best practice to stay safe in game. I honestly don't even trust people in the same corp. I usually fly with t1 ships with standard mods when I join corp run missions. All it takes is one person to ruin your day.

I've run missions with strangers that I've met in invite-only private chat channels, but that's as far as I'd go.
For me it comes down to deciding which error I'd rather make: (1) not running a mission with someone I *should* run the mission with, or (2) running a mission with someone I *shouldn't*. I generally choose (1); other people may make the other choice.

Thing is it's so stupidly easy to competly make a mission impossible by shooting trigger ships, popping mission-items or just using the gang-thingy to let you shoot your gangmate without anny real risk for the guy doing it or ability to prevent it from the missionrunners side to make it worthwhile even trying ganging up people, wich proceeds to hurt the whole multiplayer aspect of PVE (and yes, there is such thing)
If those mentioned above flaws where reworked i bet we would see alot of people ganing up, not becouse it would be more profitble but becouse gang-missionrunning is more fun
but then that would remove a easy way to gank without risk from the game, causing a whole army of forumwarriors to be unleashed onto the forums etc etc |

Actually, getting in a gang with someone doesn't open you up to be shot at by them (without the normal repercussions, of course), but it does open you up to getting shot at if they are in a war. Still, I can't see why you would want to do a mission with someone you don't know when (a) others in your corp or more than willing or like to have fun doing missions together (b) I can solo them and keep all the loot/ISK/reward/LP/standing, etc to myself and (c) the moron stranger that you agreed to do a mission with does something dumb to get his ship popped and comes after you to try to get revenge.
Basically, it comes down to one thing, just like if you were in a real gang/army or whatever, you'd only go into battle with someone you knew and trusted to have your back. I know my friends are willing to warp to me at the drop of a hat to help me out of a sticky situation. I don't know if Mr. Random is just going to shoot all the trigger ships and leave me out to hang. --
My sig taken from this site, so thoroughly explains the people I speak with on the forums. |

Or he can then invite a buddy/alt who *is* at war and you become a war target without even knowing it.

I would help a player asking a hand for low level missions or someone that has bitten the wrong Cosmos mission (if I know the mission), but not someone unknown to me that want an hand for level 4 missions.
As stated by the other posters there are several problems:
1) could be one of several kind of traps to make my ship a target;
2) I don't know the other player real abilities and knowledge of the mission, he could easily make a mess of it;
3) someone that accept a level 4 mission will not be a newbie, so he should know his limits and abilities. If he is a corp/alliance mate that has overextended himself I will give him a hand, but a complete stranger asking me to resolve his problems because he was to lazy to research the mission or too*****sure don't get much sympathy from me. Especially if it seem to be a habit of the person.

Edited by: Karan Kaldarian on 26/12/2007 23:50:50 I agree with Hotice. I normally trust no one in Eve. I play solo just to avoid someone (and there are a lot) trying to ruin your day. If I were in a corporation of course it would be different and in this case only for level 5 missions. All level 4 mission can be soloed , just need to collect info available on forums.

Trust no one m8 ... 99% of the time you will ether be killed, fooled or both Lot od people will try to take advantage of you. Best thing is to join (if not part of) corp - one that suit you best with your needs (missions, pvp, pirating, low/high sec, mining etc etc) and do the missions only with them

Don't talk to strangers, they are after your lucky charms.
Healthy amount of paranoia keeps you safer. Only people I trust are the ones I know personally in RL and my corp mates (altho I'm slightly paranoid towards members of my own corp also if I have not known them for a long while). There is no reason whatever to go out of your way to help someone random in local as it gains you nothing but additional security risks. For socialization aspect of game use people in your own corp.

I used to trust people in gangs. Then I learned of the war alt trick. Now I Only gang with strangers after talking with them for a while to guage their character - and then if I decide to gang up after all, I make sure to bring my pvp Drake - nothing can kill it solo .
But me, people can trust me. Spread the word. I'm a nice guy!

Here I was, thinking I was the one helping the other guy, not helping myself. But whatever.
I wouldn't risk any nber faction bling ships, but I'll risk a T2 fit T1 BS to help someone out. Even if I gain nothing by it.
I realize messages like this one can be seen as invitations for scum to do that most rotten of deeds, prey on peoples kindness, but I just don't see why socialization should be limited to corp/alliance, the risk *is* worth it, however small or nonexistant the gain.

Turned out none of us did, but it was a few exciting minutes . I think I would do it again, but not something I normally do.

I sometimes invite random newbies to salvage and loot missions for me since I'm doing them for standing and not ISK - less boring for me this way and the newbie can make some very nice ISK. But if someone asks for help in local or convoes me to join in my mission running I kindly refuse the offer.

Eve is a game of odds. would say that if you asked a 100 people in local to help that u could probably trust about 80 of them. However, the more people in local and the better the agent, the better the chance to get an @$$ h^&*.

I've done a few to help some people out, it's always the "I can't get past this point" type
Generally the ship i'm in determines how much i trust the person. Most often i'll use an arbi as it has enough firepower to get people past the "difficult part" and it's not worth popping as part of an aggro scam.
I suppose this must be my sig. I'll do something cool with it eventually. |

agree
I also tend to give someone new a little hand. Also I allways ask what kind of Mission/NPCs/Stage. If something donŠt look ok i simply regrett.
There are some simple things that keeps you save:
1. allways lead the Gang or leave Gang when warping in the Mission 2. Allways have a eye on that one you help, if he start to pull Aggro or something, simply warp out 3. never use a pimped Ship for something like that 4. if you donŠt know you could handle the Missions/Plex what ever even in the worst cases on your own I simply say no, simply because of things can go wrong and tend to do so, if you working together with a stranger ---- Nerf Tank - Boost Gank! |

Edited by: Sphynx Stormlord on 30/12/2007 22:14:45 I once had 4 people helping me in low sec, at the station ('The Assault' used to spawn ships at the agents station).
I was very surprised that no one even locked me; my domi was down at less than 20% armour during the fight, but everyone was actually helping and shooting the rats and not me.
I think it is a shame that the missions which spawned rats in public areas (ie gates and stations) are no longer available and have been replaced by the deadspace missions with the same names.

Having been active in the game since 2003, things have certainly changed.
They may have only been 4-5 thousand people logging in, but half of those you could get and pickup a random conversation from, an act of kindness for you're or their benefit... it had a lot to do with the people that were active in the game in the first year of eve being around.
This is mainly how it was, but the reasons why things were like that then, and what they are now.
Mentioned the type of player allready, most back then were single personal accounts, most people were enclined to group and talk to people through personal choice, you made lots of friends quick and easy if you were prepared to dab your feet with others... this alone from the advent of most people having anything from 2-10 accounts these days will never see the return to that mindset of thinking among people, despite whatever personal motivations individuals might have, there simpley isn't any great percentage of the playerbase to support what should be happening.... largely blame ccp for this one.. constantly changing ingame activites to favour multiple characters from a single user.... totaly killed off the idea of social interaction for many joining/present in the game at the source, without the players getting involved.
Mention the players, obviously im suprising nobody but mentioning the gang me buddy at war rubbish that flew around for too long.... just another nail in truth though (something the developer choose not to change, despite it being exploited in an unintented manner... like a 'lot' of the gang system rules were over the years before hand that were changed because they were being exploited in the same ways ganged alts at war were) things are now for eve at absolute rock bottom as far as productive interaction goes amoung individuals.
Ill relate to your subject:
Yes/No per your question.
Why before, why not now?
A) in my mission running place of choice, out of the 150-200 logged in after a dt.... half of those will be high sec isk farming alts on peoples multiple accounts.... a good 40-50 will be plain old isk farmers, half of whats left will be people only there to shoot easy war targets attempting to run missions, or alt's attempting to scan out peoples missions to grab the salvage, or worse grief them by stealing mission criticals..... your lucky out of 200 in local at any one time... there's 20 or 30 legitmate players that would involve themselfs together.... strange.. but those 20-30 would have been it back in 03/04... shout and you would have been called:)
Thats why i don't, nothing to do with greed/loot/trust or whatever....i have no problems what so ever giving up my time to help others, more to do with there's a very small percentage of legitimate players that deserve it.
Helping out isk farmers would be a no. Helping out high sec isk farming alts would be a no. Helping or placing myself at the mercy of high sec greifing alts would be a no.
The main failing is ultimately the rise of the GTC though in reguards to just about all of this.... ALTS
" Secure ETC trade. Let us realize here that by using the secure ETC trade, not only can you fatten your wallet a bit, but you are enriching the virtual world itself. We get more players, more diversity, more social networking and our world is richer and more interesting for it. It's a win win situation for everyone."
GM nova Quote taken from public forum.
He seems to be of the belief, that flooding eve with gtc's has improved it's social networking and has made the world of eve to become a richer expeirence for people.
After reading that, scan over again why i don't help out randoms in local anymore

Not flaming here but you're unlikely to find many trusting folk replying here, most of these ppl know the racketeers from their mission ganking exploits .
You are right ofc most players do tend not to trust ppl outside their corp, not because they're antisocial they simply understand the mechanics of eve, and how vulnerable they are in another persons gang. On the other hand the portion of lowsec i spent my first year in eve living in (moved in at 2 weeks in ) i'll happily gang up with anyone needing a hand or sacrifice my ship for a random person there.
Put simply pp will not openly trust of aid each other in an area loaded with capitalistic players attempting to take advantage of others, but will in an area they know does not have folks like that i.e. you arn't going to get ganked helping a 3 month old character. ***The EVE servers and their patches*** |

I occasionally help strangers with missions, but only under specific circumstances. After carefully checking the gang invite for war warnings, I warp to the site of the mission and leave the gang. In a joint convo ill use eve voice to coordinate our efforts.
Also, if the person is running missions for a combat intensive agent I will not help, since they had an idea of what missions to expect beforehand. But if its a marketing or public relations and they are struggling with the odd kill mission I don't mind. Extra cash from bounties is always nice, and at a Minmatar & Gallente unmodified faction standing of 8.48 and 7.88 respectively, I am not really desperate to get a cut of standing increases.
