Since I finished my capsuleer training, I stopped watching the stars, maybe got used to them always all around me while in space and they became a common sight.
It has not always been like that for me, I spend my childhood watching the stars, dreaming about leaving the dirt and flying in space.
Recently, I regained some interest in watching the stars, it was when I first saw this strange bright star in space. I travelled through the galaxy, trying to triangulate its position, but I found nothing. My calculations got wrong, or there's something strange about it. I'm not much of a scientist, so, I'm not so surprised in my failure trying to figure the position of this star. But as a pilot, I would really love to know more about what it is.
If anyone have some insight on what and where is this star, or even if it's really a star, I would be glad to hear what you have to say. -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast !

your never goin to get an answer that everyone will agree on im afraid.
there are so many theories and so many wishes about what it could be.
most have said its just a clusterwide glich in the pods interfaces that creates this star, personally i doubt this and in time (all be it i have no idea how much time) the true reason of it exsistance will come forth |

What you are seeing is quite probably the second star in a star system. Jump gates can only function in systems with two or more stars (because resonance nodes are required), and so all systems which are linked to the gate network will have two stars. For some reason, however, the navigational computer of almost all capsule-fitted ships will refuse to identify it, or warp towards it. ----- "I am prepared to meet my maker; whether my maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting me is another matter." |

Unfortunately that mumbo jumbo about binary stars is a bunch of bull. No binary star systems exist in the universe, and stargates are not in any kind of alignment to be in the supposed "resonance" positions between them.
My theory on it is that it is the Eve Gate ;)
Well, either that or a supernova detonated by the Jove.

People really should stop taking that article as law. It's so immensely factually innacurate as to be almost pure fiction at this point.
1) the article explains how modern stargates connect to all other stargates in the area simultaneously, allowing you to choose your destination all from one gate. This is not the case.
2) the article describes how stargates have to be at certain gravitic resonance points between binary stars. In actual fact, any old lagrange point will do.
3: it describes how the creation of a wormhole is a trial-and-error affair taking months. Modern wormhole technology actually allows us to instantly and succesfully create functioning jump portals 99.999% of the time by locking onto a cynosural field.
I wish to the God I don't worship that somebody would finally come along and replace that damned article with one that is actually CORRECT. -

due to the fact that this star can be seen from all known starystems in the same direction indicates that he is realy far away-> outside of the charted cluster we call home. stars dont get born "over night" novae do-> its a normal, far away star transformed into a nova-supernova or a superheavy star colapsed into a black hole and now sucking in the sourounding dust and gas clouds and those create the imense light intensity. if the second is the case we need to carefully whatch evegate as it possibly have unprdictable effects on it, one possible effect can be the creation of a new wormhole tunnel between the evegate and the new blackhole and therefor, if stable enough, opening access to new areas in space. give the astronomic faculties some time to investigate and we will soone get an aswer

You're ignoring one major point, there - that the "star" appeared simultaneously in every sky in every system of the cluster simultaneously - a cluster, I should remind you, that is several hundred light years across. A phenomenon visible to people in, say, Tenal would not show up for the people in Paragon Soul for a very, very long time.
It appeared simultaneously in every system, on the same day as a major update to the capsule interface software. Until somebody can give me conclusive proof otherwise, I'm sticking by the "glitch" line of reasoning. -

The glitch in capsule software is interesting, but... Yes, I rarely come out of my capsule and don't spend the time outside watching the stars. But if it's just a glitch in our pod sofware, we should not see it while outside, I think we need to get a bit outside of our pods and check this! Also, if there's a glitch in the jovian capsule software, who will fix it? I don't want my brain to burn abd be sent to clone facility just because there was a bug!
There is nothing to make me feel good about this star at the moment, and that's not getting better each day. -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast !

What you all are forgetting of course is the fact that whatever this ‘Star’ is, it is obviously in a region of space as yet unknown to us. And as such, it must be some considerable distance away even from the closest stars at the edge of our part of the galaxy. The light from this ‘Star’ may have been travelling years, tens of years; perhaps even thousands of years before it became visible to our part of space. However, there is one strange anomaly even with this theory, and that is, by any law of physics, the light from the ‘Star’ should have only been visible to those systems at the very edge of human space first. It would then take many, many years for it to have become visible to the other systems much further in. If anyone can explain why something becomes visible to all systems simultaneously then I would be most interested to hear it.

I don't believe the new star to be a 'glitch' but rather the updated software has allowed us to now see what was there all along. It stands to reason that when the software was upgraded that the sensitivity was amplified, thus we see more detail, thus we see the 'new' star.
I think that this may represent either something bad that happened, such as a nova, or possibly a new wormhole in the process of opening. Either way I can not escape the bad feelings I get anytime I see it. Perhaps I am being over jumpy but it makes me uncomfortable.

Yeah, everyone has their own theory. I'm convinced it's illusory, but also benign - something that'll get fixed with time.
I do like the idea that it's the New Eden Anomaly we're seeing, though - that at least is one stellar feature that's been around for long enough for the light and radiation to have propagated across the cluster.
I suppose the best option is to wait and see if anybody publishes a paper on it or something. Who knows, maybe there'll be a GalNet documentary on it. -

The eve gate you say?
Well, it's quite at the center of the galaxy if I remember my astro-geography classes and I think that from at least one of the systems I used to try some mesurement, it should have been on the other way! Also, it looked like being upwards to the galaxy plane, which is not rightly where the eve gate is located.
Maybe it's a spacial anomaly and not a star, the mention of the eve gate made me think about this : What if it was the light from the other end of eve gate collapsing? It happened a long time ago, and we see only now the light from this even on the other side. It makes sense to me. Also, there might be a reason for the light to be so bright so far away, the collapsing wormhole may have attracted all the light of the explosion this way? Then we could guess the distance of this galaxy to the one of our ancestors. This idea is quite exciting. But I have not heard of any technology able to jump straight in that direction, our current jumpdrives can't just jump into the void, we need something to lock them into. And using a standard warpdrive even the most high tech one on a light fast ship would take too long for any chance of survival.
I guess I should have spent more time listening to the classes at school, I can't remeber exactly how long ago was the eve gate collapsing. Anyway, for every light year, a high tech ship with all warp modifications (like a warp rigged helios) would only reach 21 AU per second. One light year being around 63241 AU, then it would take at least one hour per light year and I guess several weeks of warp with an uncertain outcome. Most of the time in such an expedition would be lost on the time needed to charge the warpdrive and cooldown times, which slows much the travel. As frigate class ships are not equiped to spend months in deep space, it seems not yet possible. But if my guess is right, I hope one day we can travel -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast !

Edited by: Evanda Char on 10/01/2008 13:59:07 The point about it being visible, and becoming visble in all systems in the cluster at once is very interesting.
To me that would suggest that it isn't all one "star". It would have to be several somethings. One per system.
I'm afraid the Eve Gate invisibility of the object could be explained, could it not, by the light from the object being obscured by the nearby luminance of the "gate"?

The fact it appeared in all systems at once could be collapsing wormhole effect... Still, it is strange, but the gravitation of all the stars could have broken this wormhole effect and just leave this light coming from the other end of the eve gate to all systems of the galaxy. -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast !

I’ve been consulting several noted professors about this strange anomaly. One of them has suggested that as the ‘star’ is being seen in all known star systems, it may well be a ‘hyperspace beacon’. He explained that a beacon placed in hyperspace has the potential to be at all places at all times. There is a very advanced theory, a bit beyond my understanding, which demonstrates that it could be possible for an object in hyperspace to become visible. Now, what the professor did not go into, for obvious reasons, who or what may have placed said beacon…

Interesting theory, close to the concept of the collapsing wormhole issue, the main difference is that it means someone has created a permanently stable wormhole for the beacon.

If it is a beacon, Why are we able to see it now? Surely the upgrades to our Pod Software could not have been what has made the difference. And Many other people are seeing it as well, the Non-Pod Captains as well. So I know it makes me a little nervous. I wish to put forth a motion for Concord to Send a Expeditionary force to investigate it. We should be turning every sensor array towards it to study it. We need to know if it poses a threat to our star cluster.

Not another of these misguided 'Earth' seekers? I thought that we had seen the last of this theory last time it was debunked on Galnet?
I do not pretend to have any idea what this bright Star is, but it is clear from recent reports you may have seen when onlining your neural interface in your pod, that capsuleers are far from the only people that can see this.
The fact that it outputs the entire spectrum of radiation, as well as it's omnipresence and simultaneous appearance across all of the cluster, is very worrying...

Study up on your ancient history more. Well, it's more like legend now, but many people hold it to fact. We know we came from another part of space through the Eve gate, and before that we had already expanded to many, MANY planets. Supposibly, the first planet humans inhabited was Earth.
According to this theory, we didn't have races as we do today, I don't think. If you speak to an Ancient History professor or, better yet, a THEORIST, I'm sure you would get a better explination then I could give.
On topic, I've wondered about this for awhile. It's obviously not a glitch, or we would have gotten a formal response from those who issued the camera drone upgrades. Could it be a binary star, the Eve Gate, a super nova? I have no idea, but I will continue to watch it. Forming theories is one thing, but I'm gonna wait until I can be sure before I form my own. -------------------------------------------------- My post does not represent views of my Alliance.

I have had some time to think about this today, and I am by no means an expert in such theories, however, here it goes.
What do we know about this mysterious light in the sky?
- It showed up in every known solar system at the same time
- It has very abnormal readings, it is not a star at all
- We don't know where it is coming from
- We really don't know anything at all about it
What do we know about interstellar physics? I'm not a professor or anything, but what little knowledge that I have gained from talking with other people and from researching GALNET...
We know that wormholes allow us instant access to other systems that are several light years away. What if, lets pretend, that a wormhole could open up, that had one point in space that was connected to multiple other points in space. Not the linear wormholes that we go through now. For example:
We use wormholes to go from Point A to Point B, and vice versa, but what if we could go from Point A to Point B, or Point C, or Point D, ad infinitum? What if this wormhole was stable enough that it remained opened, and did not close?
The theory that was in the news is an interesting one, the theoretical "white holes." Perhaps this could be an offset of my wormhole theory?
1 Blackhole, somewhere in the universe, that opened up several white holes, simultaneously? This could account for this so called star becoming visible in every system in the known galaxy.
Or of course, it could always be these so called Enhuadinni or whatever they are called.
Anyways, just my two isk on the subject.

Hmm... has anyone considered the possibility that it is not a natural phenomenon? I do not mean a supernatural occurrence, but a man made one? Could it be some type of new jump drive or warp drive technology?
But how could the light hit all the systems in the cluster at once? It is possible that the light from the object did not instantly materialize out of nothingness, but has been cloaked by some means we do not currently understand. Yes, it is possible that this is an entirely new phenomenon, that the light was instantly transported light years and miraculously arrived in every system on the same day, but it is quite unlikely.
Of course, I am not a recognized expert in this field of study. I am simply skeptical of any "prophetic" links this phenomenon may have. If it was predicted, then I must bow to the genius who discovered this phenomenon.
Currently there is not enough information available. I would like to publicly ask what the various research institutions plans of action are in this matter, as this truly does warrant a full scientific inquiry.
On a related note, I would like to ask CONCORD if they are planning an investigation of their own, as this phenomenon may have an impact on the Capsuleer community as a whole.

My personal theory? It's artificially induced.
Consider. Most of our archaeological evidence suggests that Humanity is not native to this area of our galaxy. Accordingly we must have migrated or otherwise transited here at some point in the past, prior to what appears to be a general loss of technology for unknown reasons.
It logically follows that unless Humanity came here fleeing some cataclysm in its original home system(s), the Human race exists in some form elsewhere in the cosmos. Human nature being static (rumors of Jovian tampering aside), we can safely posit that either for reasons of curiosity, exploration, or exploitation, these other humans will attempt at some point to make contact with us.
Thus the star is either the remnant of a former failed attempt, or a warning heralding the beginning of one. ___ Victory smiles upon those who anticipate the changes in the character of war, not upon those who wait to adapt themselves after they occur. ~Guilio Douhet |

A strange Bright Star - Astronomy conference by The University of Caille.
I'm all for it to be the EvE gate, iirc the chronicle say that once in a decade or so the pulsing energy it emits erupts greatly and then fade out so scientists can get close enough to examin it. Maybe we can finally get to use it and visit our ancestors.
Further speculation may require extensive use of this :)

I wonder if its a naked singularity? Not quite sure what properties one of those would have but it would be pretty damn weird to say the least. If an already existing black hole somehow managed to lose mass or gain spin would account for its sudden appearance as before then we wouldn't have seen anything cause it was black.
Just my random musings. Whatever it is it's gravimetric properties must be something odd as only gravity can cause light to travel at what appears to be different speeds in a vacuum.

If it is artificial I don't think we have much to worry about. It is, after all. 3.64 million light-years away. I believe the distance is of note, because it tells us that the source is within the range of neighborhood galaxies. So whatever it is, this thing is not from around here, but it ain't far, either.
Also, it's pretty sad to hear people are being so quick to jump and make assumptions. Science is all about the repetitive cycle of observation and theory, after all, meaning sometimes known laws of physics break down. I'm sure the more religious among us will use this as clout for whatever agenda they perpetuate.

Naturally I don't know what the hell that star is in the sky. It's not a star so thats out of the question. Whatever it is is way the hell off and must be enormous, at least the size of several stars. An explosion maybe, who knows.
What I do know is this. I am already becoming greatly annoyed by it. Not the star itself per se, but the fanfair being drummed up about it. Now I agree it's odd, sure it's odd and new and unusual, but that's it. I'm not afraid of it, I don't think it's god and I certainly don't think it's the other side of the EVE gate (something some people think is one in the same.)
I'm already getting flashed over ****ed off the more stations I go to lately that have these religious zealots playing instruments and singing and wailing away about it. You seen these people yet? There the same kind of people who suck their life away on Drop all day and flake out to bad music and poetry about how bad warp drives are for the environments planetside. If I've seen them across several systems I know some of you people have to have too.
I'm getting real close to doing something about it. I'm looking forward to a beer bottle to the face or being detained from killing one of them with thier own drums or those annoying rattles. And I've already observed you cannot argue with these lunatics either. To me the argument that if god exists, he is not a bright light in the distance is a clear one. But watching this one Amarrian try and point that out to a group the other day was an exercise in futility if not hilarity. I was laughing at least.
The irony was delicious, you've got the argument that god is a giant invisible man in the sky on one hand and that he's a giant bright light in the sky on the other, and they're both yelling about how the other one is wrong! How rich! It's too much!

I'm not saying it's impossible that he left and has gone home, but he may still be coming into our part of the galaxy sometimes, I guess jovians have no issue with travelling without gates.
So, I think we need some help from higher understanding beings. The jove could help us, but we still need a way to reach them.
I agree we should contact the Jove, they are more advanced in the sciences and may be able to help us. Because if it is something that is a threat it could be a threat to them as well.

In honesty, I'd recomend a multi-teir ILA. Incredibally Large Array. A number of regular sensors spread out in a simple patten a known distance from each other. Useing the combined data from each sensor in the array, the result is an image of quality as if from a single huge sensor. The technology has been around for ages, but with faster then light travel, has fallen by the wayside, as it's easier to just fly a scout ship to whatever it is you're looking at. Plus, whatever data you collect is as old as the light you collect. aka, something 20 light years away, you see what happened 20 years ago. But, in this case, might be useful.

Perhaps the Jove have come up with a sort of Super Star Gate with the ability to jump from any system too any system. This could explain its sudden appearance everywhere

There's only one technology I know of that involves simultaneous events in multiple star systems - or at least near to. Stargates. Do systems without stargates have their own new star? It's not something any pod pilots I know can test but the empires all have their own probes sweeping the galaxy for new systems to incorporate.
The report recently released from CONCORD (mentioned here) talks of remotely activating multiple gates. If gate security is so easily circumvented by the knowledgeable it's not unreasonable to consider a link between the new 'star' and the gate network. On the other hand, it may just be a wormhole phenomenon related to the wormholes used by the stargates.
If this is a deliberate action rather than a 'natural' phenomenon I can not think of what the intent behind it might be (although I wouldn't rule out a new Quafe advertising campaign).

It could be the result of a massive weapon that was fired elsewhere in the universe, meaning it would be artificially generated as others have suggested.
The cyno-field theory presented earlier is also interesting. A cyno field far away for some sort of inter-galactic starship, perhaps?

Maybe it's the most hardcore, kickass, Gallentean rock concert ever. I don't care what the Amarr say, the Gallente know how to ROCK!
On a serious note, it's definitely artificially produced and until we have proper coordinates to investigate it we can only speculate. I liked the Eve Gate theory, about the other side closing, but honestly I wouldn't be surprised if it was the Jove. We haven't heard anything from them in so long and our space seems so cut off from them, they might be up to. Too many possibilities right now, but unless it's a weapon there's no rush.
If it is a weapon? I'd sacrifice my very livelihood to stop it, and I'm sure many others would too. Even pirates know that home is home, and we could count on the capsuleers to stop it. So, to the theories of it being a weapon, maybe, but there would be no worry if it was one. -------------------------------------------------- My post does not represent views of my Alliance.

This is interesting. Does any of you believe that this observation could gather all the races, also pirates and non pirates together? If not to fight against a new enemy (maybe we went too far with that idea), then to find out what it is? I'm just asking, would like to know what you people think.

After financing a MTVLA ( Multi-Tiered Very Large Array) at great personal expense that spanned 38 star systems, our investigation has revealed that the unusual star that is seen in every star system is none other than Elvis Presley being brought to the EVE gate by little grey, big eyed aliens who intend to send him home because he is eating them out of house and home.
Oh, and there is a fleet of 38 trillion Titan sized warships following behind and a few billion support ships trailing along in a cometary tail behind them.
But ELVIS is ALIVE!!! YAY!

I know one thing for sure... That thing gives me the creeps.
I'm sure the Jove are already researching into it, Unless it was them that caused it in the first place. But personally even though i'm trying to stay on the good side with them, I don't really trust them.
Ah well I reckon they'll tell their favoured Gallente and Caldari soon enough!
In the meantime lets all keep an eye out. This could be the start of something big...

Just a side note to the "other side of the EVE gate collapsing"-theory:
If the triangulation is correct and it is really 3.6 mio light years a way, isn¦t the time frame wrong?
Also it doesn¦t explain, why it showed up simultaniously everywhere in the cluster.

People, people, we could spend days, months,or years guessing what it is (yes I said guessing, even a hypothesis or a theory is still only a guess as to what this light is). The only way we may ever know is to visit this light and determine for ourselves what it is. We have the technology. Command ships that can jump anywhere they want (pretty much). One of my frigates can move at over 2000 s/m with a micro warp drive. If we really want to see whats inside we should travel there, and take a look. But if it is, say, the light from sol's end of the Eve-gate then it would take years to get there.

If you'll excuse me butting in here, I know I've not properly introduced myself, but I felt moved to comment on this. I don't think I'd go so far as to assume Earth is a lie - that's pretty strong phrasing. The truth is that we don't have any real evidence one way or the other - although as someone's already pointed out, our archaeological records do indicate that we didn't evolve in this part of the Galaxy. Some suggest we might not originate in this galaxy at all, but I've never understood quite what they base that on.
But is it really that unreasonable to suppose that we might have travelled some distance to get here? After all, we have stargates, so it's not as if the technology is completely outlandish. And why should we rule out the possibility of some sort of natural stargate? If we accept that, then it's not such a leap to the idea that there might have been another planet - maybe even a number of planets - on the far side. For myself, I see no harm in referring to that hypothetical planet as 'Earth'. I'm not sure whether the stories we get told as kids are necessarily true - they're all pretty vague, when you think about it - but it's one thing to say that Earth's a mysterious possibility; something else entirely to claim it's a lie.
As for the Star, well, obviously I don't know any more than the rest of you. But a couple of you have said it makes you uncomfortable. My feelings are rather different. For some reason, and I know this'll seem odd, I find it sort of comforting. I suppose it might be down to the possibility that it's artificial - in which case it means we're not alone out here, and if that's so, there's just as much chance that whoever has found a way to attract our attention might help us rather than exterminate us. That might be the reason I feel the way I do - but I don't think it's quite that simple. There's just... something.
Meh. I don't know. I'm just a traveller. But to me it just feels as though it's watching over us somehow. |

I think I know what it is know from reading the history of the EVE gate.
Huge bright storms come out of the EVE gate.
And So what we are seeing is the ACTUAL brightness of the ACTUAL Storms/catastrophe far away in the system where Earth is.

It's possible - but then we still have to account for the fact that, as far as we can see, the Star became visible in every system in Eve at the same time. |

A naked singularity. one without an event horizon....that is certainly odd indeed.

That's just because it is darker in low sec :), You know like when you go out of the city and the stars are brighter?
Oh yeah and that IS strange it was seen in all systems at once but some how I could imagine it being the destroid earth system.
OR maybe it is a srange type of energy that travels faster then light so it just SEEMS like it apeared in every system at once. *** |

Edited by: Drachtul Tun''Dull on 04/03/2008 14:23:41 This points to the problem with the whole "Earth hypothesis." Although there probably was at some point an Earth that existed and might still exist, its myth holds such power over us that it, or the related Eve Gate, is trotted out to explain every mystery.
I personally think that the whole thing will be explained with a proper reading of the correct sacred texts by the Theology Council. It probably was foretold in some prophecy a thousand years ago and simply unrecognized since then.
You belong to the Earth Cult, I belong to the Amarrian faith. We will both look silly when we realize that it is nothing more than a graphic bug introduced by the CONCORD software used to track pods across the Cluster interacting with the drivers for our camera drones.

Perhaps the 4 empires and Concord should contact the Jove and send out expeditions.

I was being somewhat facetious, pointing out how many people (including myself) jump immediately to what often turns out to be fantastic (as in fantasy, not terrific) explanations because we don't initially understand it. Although, as one raised in the Amarrian faith, I understand that God's hand is ultimately behind everything, there is nothing that says that a certain phenomenon can be directly attributed to God without intermediate steps that are perfectly explainable once the facts are in.
Considering how long it takes to clear up a simple criminal investigation into the assassination of one of the greatest leaders of our time, though, I wouldn't expect this star thing to be figured out this century. Speaking of a phenomenon with perfectly explicable direct causes. Ahem.

I would really prefer to not call upon the Jovians on this one. The hysteria surrounding their Ambassador's Cluster-wide personal visitation makes me cautious in anything involving them and great distances.

Following the suggestion by the Sisterhood I took a shuttle on an express trip to the EVE Gate. While I cannot assure you what the bright star in the sky is I can say that you CANNOT see it from the Gate itself and the Gate appears brighter than its system's sun. This would suggest to me that it may very well be as suggested, that the Bright Star IS the EVE Gate. +++++++++++++++ For the LAST time...

It may just be that next to the gate it is so bright you do not see it OR that the waves of storms comming out of the gate scramble the view in some way maybe because it is the same storms from the star looking thing as what's comming though the gate.
And besides when I see the bright star looking storm in the sky it is in the direction of Delve not the EVE gate witch is behind me. Were I'm at the star is about South West and the EVE gate is North of me.
