First and for most, killing "defencless" miners does take skill in high sec contrary to popular belief. and i will explane why.
first you have to agro them. You can do this a number of way. I perfer to steal their full can of ore in a deceptively small and deceptively weak ship. After you get all agroey (pretty sure i just made that word up) to them they have to fly back to station and will usually get a bigger ship then you to come and kill you with. Or they may call in buddies. Or if ur really lucky they will agro you right there on the spot.
Whatever the case is when they come back in a bigger ship say a battle cruser or if ur lucky a battle ship :)now this is where the skill part kicks in. (i am almost always in my throax with 9k armor and tech II drones). Usually you gonna figure out what kinda guns they are using (short or far)and act accordingly. IF they are in a missle boat you are almost always scrwed due to the fact taht they never miss. Lets assume that a megathron with blasters is going to fight ya.
First off you need to remember that your target is a miner and cant do any actual damage to you. Because your a hard core pirate you will surely out skill and out maneuver the miner. Thats my basic law. of course im kidding, just saying that makes me apper like the king of ignorant vally or someting. Anyways back to the topic at hand. So he/she comes in with a blaster megathron. when you see this start your oribet at 15km. Why 15? cuz you will be in warp disrupton range of your target but out of web range so he cant get his guns on you if you keep moving. Very clever eh?
Aye, next you need to kill off the drones. thoes are the only things that can do actual damage to you keeping the miner at a distance. Once this drones are dead get ur donres on the mega and laugh like a pirate while the miner gets what he/she deserves.
So there you have it killing miners does take skill and some kinvery. thats more then any 0.0 gank squad can say.

In the end, you'd rather take out a character who's SP is specialized in mining and industry, rather than trying to take on a character who has better skills in PvP.
For all your "skills" in taking down miners in high sec, especially the noobier they are, they mean jack in actual PvP.

You can sit orbiting at 15km all the Megathron has to do is web and kill your drones one by one and unless your using rails you wont be able to damage him either, im ignorant as to the facts about whether a rail Thorax could actually break a Megathrons tank and I'm always reluctant to rely on EFT figures.
If the Mega has heavy neuts fitted (all BSs should have imo to fend of tacklers) your gonna be out of cap fairly soon and lose MWD and you will end up in the Megas webrange pretty fast.

all im saying is anyone can go to low sec and camp a gate with 15 other guys and kill anything that comes through. Is that really any better then going 1v1 with a miner in a bigger ship? And why does it matter what i do? Last i checked this is just a game :)
also yes the mega could be fitted a number of ways. but in the end it is still a miner and im counting on it to be ill fitted or ill experanced. eather way i will win.

still doesnt mean you need skill for killing a miner.
a cruiser fitted up for pvp vs a barge fitted up for mining and protection from rats (normaly a few drones). Bit of a one sided fight dont you think?
The polish cavalry tryed to take on something with more firepower, the panzors won.

It doesn't take skill, but then that's kind of what pirating is. It's a game of odds where you stack them way in your favor = profit.
If the mechanics of the game forced even fights, there would be very little ... well no pirating at all. Or if all pirates had to pirate other pirates...lol say that three times fast.
This game is about creating uneven fights. None of that is skill more than it is pure numbers.

You know, many moons ago in a different character, I was happily mining when I heard some reports of can-flippers in the area.
My character at the time was specifically skilled up for mining. However, much to their dismay, I just also happened to have almost 3 mil sp in drones. Did you know that a 4-month old character in a dominix can rip apart a thorax and a ferox with surprisingly little effort, while sporting a full-rack of T2 mining lasers?
Yah, neither did they. |

well some ppl arent as good. if they had any brains they would know a mining domi's only form of attack is the drones. so keep him scrambled and duh... kill the drones. if i read u correctly u said there was 2 of em.
i think 2 people could kill drones quite quickly. but thats just me.
i 2 also got 3 M in drones :) High five.

It's got nothing to do with Concord protecting you from the locals, or the lack of dictor bubbles and cap ship blobs. Its all about the ability to flip a can, and man, that takes some skill.

Killing miners does indeed take skill, and from a piracy point of view is a fully respectable form of play. (if one looks at RL pirates from ancient times prior to Rome, all the day to today, they all LOVE helpless victims with phat loot....)
But in terms of PvP, it is bottom feeding, pure and simple. Nothing wrong with that, just dont try and present yourself as a someone looking for 'pvp'
Bottom feeders look for victims, and should be honest about that detail.
Play nice while you butcher each other.
