By the way, if you're there, and grow antsy waiting for your match to start, a few of us have been withdrawing to other planets in system, and doing a bit of Frigate or Newbie ship fighting for fun. Just cheap little things (please do not bring a faction frig!) for giggles. Something to do waiting for ducks to get into rows, and draw aggro from cans!
So if your hauler has extra room, bring that dusty frigate along!
Oh, and there are a few of us chatting about the matches in the Cruiser Tourney channel via Eve Voice. Be sure to turn that on! /Thaadd (eagerly awaiting her match 14:30 GMT Tuesday!) #1 Don't fly what you can't lose. |

Forty Three and Paddington lied about the time we were supposed to fight. I have all the logs right here.
El Caido and I bickered about some minor point of rules before the tournament. He is being utterly favoritist in not allowing us our fight. He wouldn't even look at the proof that the other team set our match at a certain time, and then told him differently. If anything, Forty Three and Paddington ought to be the ones to be disqualified for lying and attempting to cheat their way past us. But we were still ready for the fight, right there, before they even went to their next match and still they wouldn't fight us.
Not only that, but by doing this, El Caido has proven beyond a doubt that he's not impartial, he's not fair, and this whole tournament is a sham. It's a damn shame... we entered this tournament in good faith, we trained, we spent time and effort for it, expecting decent treatment, and for something like this to happen, it absolutely damages the proceedings badly, if not irreparably.

Chat logs can be edited, so how can SAK know if Forty Three and Paddington lied, or if you are the lier? If you were in SAK shoes and had to choose which team to believe, would you assume that the time received by eve-mail is the correct one? This is the only correct decision to make.
So maybe your team lied, maybe your opponent lied, maybe something else created confusion. But in any case SAK took the right action and your bashing in this forums only serve to discredit you.
Moreover there is a simple way that this could have been avoided. _You_ should have sent the agreed time to SAK directly, instead of letting your _opponent_ team take care of things. The action of not sending SAK the time before hand only raise suspiscion against you. If your opponent sent a different time then you, SAK would know right away that something is wrong.
There are many aspects in a tournament and failing to send the agreed on to SAK and trusting the other team to do it is a call to create such a situation. Hopefully you will learn from this instead of blaming everyone and everything for your mistake.

Hm. So I'm thinking there are 2 lessons to be learned:
1) Cc the refs on every communication with one's opponents, and 2) Inform your opponents that any communication from them that is NOT Cc'd to the refs will be ignored.
Does that sound about right?

1) Only important information such as schedule needs to be communicated, there's no need to overload the refs with meanless chit chat. 2) Optional but nice.

I thank everyone for their patience and I apologize on behalf of the SAK EVEnt crew to those who may feel unjustly-treated by the referees ... but as has been stated since the very beginning of registration: all referee decisions are final. Regardless, the show must go on:
bigbaby27 and prof volkner are withdrawn due to availability issues. Senya RUS and Jejo Zanzibaroov move onto the next round.
tituria supera and verital are withdrawn due to availability issues. whk deathknight and Kyros Emerson move onto the next round.
Dark Sanguine and Lysander Kreig are withdrawn due to availability issues. xFLYBOYx and Ithica Ramlix move onto the next round.

Originally by: Pham Nuuwen Forty Three and Paddington lied about the time we were supposed to fight.
Hopefully you will learn from this instead of blaming everyone and everything for your mistake.
.
So... what you're saying is, that your opponent's team can go ahead and tell the judge that the fight is at any time they want, when you're offline, and when you don't show up, that's that? How in the world does that make ANY sense at all?
We were there, in the system, ready to fight at the appointed time. They went ahead and fought their 'next' opponents anyway, after telling us they'd fight us still, cowards.

Alfadir d'Aegir (Thorax) and Koyomi Higarasu (Vexor) defeat Mr Yoda (Celestis) and uber nator (Caracal) in 9:30. This match was exceptional - definitely one of the best in the tournament - as we watched the Vexor and Celestis spend half the match throwing everything they could at each other.
Ecaf Ersa (Vexor) and Mobyr Rutthelm (Vexor) defeat Ariel Loren (Vexor) and Jolia Darkstrider (Blackbird) in 3:30. I felt privileged to finally see someone make smart use of sentries in the tournament. Good fight from both sides!

Oh, got nothing to say about the issue then? No surprise. I'm sorry but the only recourse left is to prevent the tournament from creating any more victims like me and poor Hellraiser, who skipped a day of class to be here, only to be frozen out by the likes of crappy little El Caido.

Actually, you CAN repair structure, but what I repaired on him was shields. Since he was at about 0% structure, and I got off three cycles before I ran out of cap and warped out so I wasn't killed ... I think it's safe to say I definitely swung the tide on that one.

Pham: I highly doubt that. I never saw anyone other locking me than my opponents. You never were within the range of remote shield repping - if anyone was, the judge would have stepped in and disqualified one party or restarted the match.
Let's assume you did manage to shield rep me from outside the arena, it still did not matter. I wasn't able to fire a single shot after closing in with Guy Fox's Moa; the match would have ended exactly the same way if I was destroyed few seconds earlier - it would have just taken a bit longer.
Your actions are rather childish at this point: perhaps somebody wronged against you, but now you're trying to take your revenge on people who have nothing to do with the issue. Therefore, I ask you to stop harassing the remaining pilots in the tournament and take your revenge on the organizers and/or your opponents after the tournament is over.
And, lucky me, surviving with 65 structure. Thanks for the good fight, Siigari and Guy, despite the infernal 6am time for us on this side of the pond. :)

You're right, the shield repping is not quite as spectacular as getting a 20 second jam on someone would be, with the resulting boom and continuing negative effect on the victim.
It's easily done from 100km, extremely detrimental, and nobody could possibly mistake the potential for modifying the outcome of a match.
Thanks for these great ideas guys, keep em coming!

Originally by: el caido elfeo and elmaster withdrawn due to availability issues. Kha0s and HuliGaNkA move onto the next round.
The truth is we withdrew because we have grown tired of dealing with an unlucky pairing of opponents. Our foes and us share a 7 hour time difference, and through our best efforts to communicate with them, the best we could ever hear from them was "talk to el caido." Our hopes was to have our pairings switched with someone at least on the same continent as us. El caido response "No...one of you has to withdraw. You can face them one on one." Option 2 would have been nice...however our setups were based on a >TEAM< strategy...I would have...if they had ever been on-line after that option had been given.
Perhaps the next time you hold a tournament of this nature, as you are going through the sign up process, you can ask people their timezones/play times. My partner and I have made every attempt to be online as much as possible in the past 4 days.
I dont mind not winning our fights...in truth we probably would have died in a brilliant and horrendous way...however I do mind taking all the time to prepare our ships, practice our tactics, move our gear, coordinate our own play times (both married/jobs/family/school) only to be told "No, one of yall have to withdraw because you happen to be paired up against someone on the other side of the planet (literally...)."
Good luck with the rest of you who are still in the fight. I watched a few matches sitting at 130 in a shuttle for a few hours on Saturday and Sunday evening.

to Elmaster.
my apologies on the outcome of your experience, and i do appreciate your foreberance in not having to many ill feelings about what happened, but as for scheduling issues, even if we did pair all first round matches for teams in the same time zones we would still run into scheduling issues later in the tourney when winning teams from around the world started to advance in the brackets, and also unfortunatley there is a point at which we just have to make a ruling(hopefully with the understanding of the players involved), so as not to unduly hold up the process for the rest of the players involved.
sincerly Jeregh.
as a ps. this is our first try at holding such a widespread tourney, with experience comes knowledge and hopefully, if we do this again it will go much less painfully for all involved

As I read the forum posts, I feel it necessary to confirm the scheduling of my teams second round match up so that there is no confussion. I have not been able to be online at a suitable time for my partner and opponents due to exam prep, but, knowing this earlier in the week, I asked my partner to confirm with our opponents which I assume he has already done.
Therefore,
Can we get a ref for a match between Aurelius Constantinus/M41NINFR4M3 vs Amon Nagira/D Dark between 21:00-22:00 in Autaris tomorrow, 31.01.08? Regardless, I will be on all day tomorrow, and so, if necessary, I can be flexible with my time (knowing I have not personally spoken to our opponents). If possible, can we get someone to frasp our match. Much appreciated.
To my partner and our opponents, thank you for your patience.

Aur

Definatly no hard feelings Jeregh. We understand that this was a first undertaking, and there toes were going to be stepped on...it just sucks when the toes happen to be inside a pair of shoes you personally own is all. With over 170 teams taking part, there are inevitably going to be scheduling conflicts and learning pains along the way.
We look forward to the next tournament. Seeing as how I am still in the area, I may fit out a frig and join in some of the 1v1 fun some of the other pilots have been having in the area.

After our own experience, seeing all these 'withdrawals due to availability issues' makes me wonder quite seriously if this is really the case or if this is another example of El Caido screwing teams over and/or fixing the brackets.

The unprecedented el caido versus SebbyTheFreak exhibition match results as follows:
el caido (Vexor) defeats SebbyTheFreak (Rupture) in 2:43 minutes
With a daring display of piloting, Sebby managed to avoid el caido's wrath for almost a full 3 minutes by piloting his ruppie around the arena, simultaneously shooting the attacking drones. At minute 1:14 Sebbs had shot several of el caido's drones but lost his shields, was into armor and definitely on the defensive. He managed to stay alive for another 1:29 minutes until he became a pod at minutes 2:43.

Alright guys / girls since so many people have asked for a ratio on number of ships used and abused in the tournament I thought I'd step up and put my free time on the line.
As of Jeregh's post - 2008.02.02 03:08:00
These are the ship totals that I have logged and entered into the Excel Sheet
Name---Total#
Arbitrator---18 Augoror------0 Maller-------13 Omen---------1
Blackbird----48 Caracal------66 Moa----------8 Osprey-------1
Celestis-----5 Exequror-----0 Thorax-------87 Vexor--------70
Bellicose----2 Rupture------67 Scythe-------0 Stabber------7
Total Ships so far 450 Ships not entered due to Forfeit, No Show, 2v1, 1v1, Ref info loss 57
Things to remember:
-This only tracts ships used per match, and that were logged for info -Does not take into account ships Destroyed and rebuilt/replaced (lack of info) -Logs team Forfeits as 2 unknown ships due to no show -Does not take account of Ship modules/weapons (lack of info) -All numbers subject to change, tournament is not over
Rank
#1 Thorax #2 Vexor #3 Rupture #4 Caracal #5 Blackbird

What I would like to see now that the tournament is nearing its completion is a list of the fastest wins. I know my partner and I had a victory in 1 minute 24 seconds. And there was a defeat in under a minute if I read correctly, and another at 1 minue and 10 seconds. If I may be so bold, these are all incredibly fast compared to some of the matches.
I'd like to see where we all rank and probably what ships were used.. Since I'm posting from work... And I have time.. maybe I should make up the list?

FlyinPenquin (Rupture) and SheriffFruitfly (BlackBird) defeat whk deathknight (BlackBird) and Kyros Emerson (Maller) in 10:03 minutes
A jittery start (one contestant warped out of sight briefly when taking position, but was cleared by the opposing team) by zealous and tense contestants, wound up in a battle of epic proportions that lasted over ten full minutes. These two well matched teams fought mostly without shields after the first two minutes until whk deathknight lost armor and went into structure at 7:15. He survived and structure tanked his BlackBird for 47 seconds until he became a pod at minute 8:02. FlyinPenquin and SheriffFruitfly then turned their unwanted attention towards Kyros Emerson, who went into armor on his Maller at minute 9:45 and clung to honor before going down with his ship at 10:03.

the spread sheet is as follows as close as I can get it.
Total Ships Used: 586 Total Ships Unknown/Unaccounted: 76 -Ships not entered due to Forfeit, No Show, 2v1, 1v1, Ref info loss
Arbitrator----27 Augoror------0 Maller--------20 Omen---------1
Blackbird----59 Caracal------86 Moa----------9 Osprey-------1
Celestis-------6 Exequror-----0 Thorax-------104 Vexor--------87
Bellicose-----2 Rupture------101 Scythe-------0 Stabber------7
Things to remember:
-This only tracks ships used per match, and that were logged for info -Does not take into account ships Destroyed and rebuilt/replaced (lack of info) -Logs team Forfeits as 2 unknown ships due to no show -Does not take account of Ship modules/weapons (lack of info) -All numbers subject to change, tournament is not over
Rank
#1 Thorax #2 Rupture #3 Vexor #4 Caracal #5 Blackbird
Rupture has moved up in the list, replacing the Vexor as the 2nd most used ship. -most likely due to the effect of same ships being used by the same teams as they progress. -with only a difference of 3 the Rupture could still come out on top of this tournament as most used.
Side notes: times are shot to hell, I see you mentioned a 50 second match somewhere but my spreadsheet doesn't show that anywhere, bear in mind im going by only what you post in here, if the post is incomplete so will the data be.

Statistical breakdown for the geeks out there:
ships flown vs victorious ships pie-charts
With less than a dozen matches remaining in the tournament, there are a few trends upon which to comment. Although Gallente combat boats (Vex and Rax) are the most popular ships, the Rupture is by far the most successful. The most common pairing was the Rup/Rax.
The Moas in the tourney performed very poorly, so the upcoming +1 turret buff is definitely welcome. Personally, I think the Omen post-buff would have made this tourney much more exciting, but I guess we shall see the effects next year. :)
I found it interesting that a Cara paired with a different ship often ended in defeat. However, a pairing of two Caras proved very successful for a number of teams. Blackbirds performed as expected, as ECM was a powerful focal point in the strategy in this tourney.
Drones, however, were by far the strongest weapon in the tourney. Often the deployment and counter-attacks with drones turned the tide in a battle. Sentries, however, did not have a strong showing - mostly due to poor strategy. And as expected, many strategies were also dependent on speed - from fittings, overheating AB/MWD, and implants.
One team in particular decided to field a pair of Bellis and did rather well, considering. But overall, the lighter EW boats like the Belli and Cele did not have a high survival rate. Support vessels such as the Ossy also tended to fail miserably ... and no one has dared to fly an Exequoror, Scythe, or Augoror. Stabbers also had a poor showing, but that can be mostly attributed to the design of the tournament rather than a lack of usefulness.
And I cannot help but to notice that despite the small number of Amarr vessels in the tourney, they proved themselves as rather successful ... especially considering the sentiment much of the galaxy holds towards their ships in an 'even' match like this. The Arbitrator in particular had a strong showing, but the Maller was a bit of a curiosity. It was flown exceptionally by some pilots and not so well by others. Whether it was due to certain pilots overestimating its abilities or opponents properly-fit to withstand lasers is pure speculation. Regardless, Amarr cruisers were definitely more successful than Caldari; draw from this whatever conclusions you like ...
And finally, I am pleased to say that greater team age did not always translate into certain victory. In fact, 83 matches resulted in the older team's victory, and 78 in the younger team's victory. This is fairly close, and can be attributed mostly to the sheer density of the tournament (the first few rounds had teams of almost exactly the same age facing each other), the 'twelve month rule' penalty, and smart tactics (the youngest team progessing into the final 16, for instance).
I hope this quenched the thirst of the geeks in the audience. The finals are fast-approaching (this weekend), and I wish the remaining teams much luck!

First semi-final match ended with Birkir (Arbitrator) and Ciprian (Arbitrator) defeating Jude Kopenhagen (Rupture) and Vanden (Arbitrator) in approximately 9 minutes. The pair of nano-fit Arbis again dominated with evasion tactics, and there was little Jude and Van could do to catch them.
At one point Vanden lured Birk and Cip to overshoot him and force them out of the arena by a small margin, but they immediately returned as per my warnings, not effecting the progress of the combat. This tactic was clever, but because Birk and Cip did not do it intentionally, immediately responded, and the spirit of the tournament is the fighting and not the pithy artificial rules ... I let it play out.
Congratulations to Birk and Cip for advancing into the finals. Jude and Van are not going home empty-handed; they were awarded the 250 million ISK third prize!

I hope everyone went home with at the very least a good time and a lesson or two learned. ;) I am proud of the turnout, and I hope this rejuvenates the EVE community to hold bigger and better capsuleer-run events in the future. Thanks to everyone for being responsible and honorable during the course of the competition, and for diplomatically solving what few problems that did arise.
For those of you who wish to be added to the SAK EVEnts mailing list, EVEmail me requesting such. And stay tuned for future video highlights of the tournament to be posted here and on the website linked above. And if you pass me sometime in local, be sure to wave. ;) Fly safe everyone.

thanks alot for letting us be involved in a very hard fought and very fun competition. hope we have proved what duty corporation are made of with 2nd and 3rd in the competition with our 2 teams.
we really had to do our home work on a few teams and came unstuck in the final against a much more skill opponent 3 times our age but worth every minute. would be very happy to return and do it all again.
special thanks to el c and the other refs who was there throughout and will continue to get a wave in local from now.

Many, many congratulations to Birkir and Ciprian for winning, as well as to all those who won prizes in the tournament. I was very sorry to have missed the finals day, and am eager to watch the fraps. Congrats also go to DUTY. for getting 2 teams into the final 4 - a great achievement.
I'd also like to take this opportuntity to extend a special thank-you to everyone who participated in this tournament - it was all you guys duking it out over the 2 weeks that made the whole tournament such a success.
Final word of thanks to ISD whose mention of the tournament before it began certainly boosted its profile - and especially to Deck, whose presence as an observer at many matches was appreciated by both the referees and the combatants.
Until next time then o>

I would love to know the Arbi loadouts they were using if they are out there somewhere. ------------------------------ Poncho: You're bleeding, man. Blain: I ain't got time to bleed. [Poncho shoots a bunch of grenades up to the top of the cliff] Poncho: You got time to duck? |
