Originally by: Zebram Downloaded the game thursday and ive got to say its pretty good.Reminds me abit of Masters of Orion.Out of the 3 races which do you guys like playing the best?
Really hard to say...
TEC is the only one with a "proper" capital shield repairer (Dunov, instant/targeted), which combined with the relatively high damage output of the main battleship (the gauss gun) can be a pretty intimidating thing to encounter, and just add a few robotics cruisers into the mix (hull repair) to make it all nigh-invulnerable as long as they still have antimatter reserves. Quite powerful in the opening to mid stages of the game, and again pretty balanced in the end-game if resources are not an issue, but has a bit of a problem in the mid-late stages when it's quite vulnerable to an economically crippling attack.
Advent, while only having an "area/overtime effect" capital shield repair, and relying more heavily on shields, they do have the iconus guardian (absorbs 1/3 of damage on shield), which combined in larger numbers with a fleet that has some repair-able capitals, alongside a few hull repair cruisers too, again, are pretty hard to bring down ; also, they have loads of special abilities that amplify or "reflect" damage. So, for instance, if you DO spot some unlucky sod focusing fire on one of your ships, hit it with the L3/120% damage reflected thingy and watch them go "ouch", add some 16%-damage-spread-to-enemies and the damage-over-time of the Destra, and you have a pretty scary combination. Oh, and did I mention, they are the only ones that CAN train cap ships (with the proper research) for free up to the L3/L4 cap ? Not only that, but they can also "transfer" the experience levels of a "dead" ship to a freshly produced ally. Oh, and the cheap frigate steals antimatter and transfers it to allied ships. Damn. They're not so hot right when you start, but they can handle themselves. They're pretty powerful however in the late-mid and especially very late stages of the game, when most research is done already.
Vasaari, well, they have pretty expensive ships compared to the rest, but they make up in it by having a small chance to bypass enemy shields altogether. They also have "merged" metal/crystal research, the ability to research "see all phase travel in the galaxy", and especially the ability to CREATE temporary in-solar-system phase lanes. Yup, that's right, once you build the proper building, you can jump directly to any other world of yours that has such a building, and there's also a capital ship that at a higher level acts as if it's one of those buildings. And to make matters WORSE for your enemies... the same structure lets you later on get "free ships" (not capitals, but plenty of frigates and cruisers), after you research "Dark Armada", and there's a capital ship with a similar ability (of "cloning" your frigate/cruiser forces. In other words, they're insanely versatile in when and where they strike, and very resource independent in the later stages of the game (your fleet is almost guaranteed to be at the max levels constantly due to dark armada reinforcements).
So, really, I couldn't say any of them is my favourite... it would very much depend on the map and the game settings, and the difference in who's favored are small enough to make it tough to pick. I'd say they managed to get just the right amount of balance, while still keeping them very distinctive.

I finally got round to installing Homeworld 2 this week and I'm surprised to see how dated the graphics are! I remember being amazed by Homeworld 1 years ago. I can't even get past Mission 3 in HW2, so I doubt I have the patience for SoaSE. Sounds very tempting though...

I have great regard for Stardock. I've been more than happy to pay for their products because they have a fantastic attitude to their customers, they treat the people who play their games as respected friends, and because they produce a very high quality product (partly because they involve the fans at every step *cough cough*).
At least 6 people have bought stuff from them because of my personal recommendation. When you have a company who'd rather spend money on coding than marketing, I'm happy to advertise for them.

Each race has at least one capital that has a "completely disable enemy target" ability. Use one of those plus the PIJ, and you should be able to at least kill one enemy capital per incursion. Heck, I usually use 2 or 3 of them in sequence to keep one enemy cap perma-disabled, just hunt them down across multiple systems.

Doesn't matter if they run, i always take down at least one or two caps.. bout 10 to 15 seconds for each kill
Just my bombers can knock out shields and some armor in one pass... isn't that hard.. though does get annoying as they wont stay and fight... best way to do it is to attack their home system, they always seem to come back to fight there even if they run at first.

Got my first proper game of this today...been playing at least five or six hours on one of the smallest maps and I can see it going on for at least the same amount of time before someone wins. I doubt I'll be playing much else over the next few weeks. After this is finished I'm gonna start on the largest map I can find...it's gonna be awesome.

Not a bad game.
Pros: - Easy to pick up and play - Runs on anything 2007 or better. Graphics demand are quite low - Rock solid, never crashes on a well setup PC - This game is great for people at work - Pause mode is very useful in this game
Cons: -I got bored quickly because the end game is a predictable AI - Economics are a bit weak and lack depth (only 2 types of resources) - Black Market is a bit disappointing and has very little variety
The fleet battles are exactly what EVE should be.
BTW, TEC is the best race. Nice game but definitely not an EVE replacement.
Now if only CCP could make the fleet battles in EVE less laggy... |

Quick questions:
Does this game allow you to put it in windowed mode?
Is it a game that can be played while doing homework? (Little opinionated here, just find that I get my ars handed to me if I try to multitask with some games)
How long does it take to finish a game about?
Thanks ahead of time guys, happy hunting.

yes
Maybe. In fact, probably yes, as there are a lot of times I am waiting while my money/resources builds up to start spending again.
Depends. I have done small games in 4 hours, and bigger games over a couple days. Time to complete a game depends on three things. How quickly you want to destroy the enemy, how large of a map you play and how many opponents you have.
I haven't played a game yet where I have done all of the reseach trees before wiping out my opponents.

If you buy from Stardock, all of your purchases are tied into an account, and just like Valve's Steam, as long as you have the original account login and password, you can download all of the Stardock products you have purchased. In fact, Stardock was ahead of Valve in doing this digital distribution.
Just make sure to install the Stardock manager software where you want your games, it does not allow you to chose the installation directory for the software you download.

You mean, you DON'T use mostly capitals in your fleets ? I usually dedicate most, if not all my resources into the largest cap fleet possible, then fill any holes with a couple of frigs or cruisers... but most of the "support points", resources and everything else is in form of capitals. Heck, sometimes my whole starter fleet is composed of 2 capitals and nothing else (a battleship, and the colony-able capital).
Usually, I clear out pirate bases with as little as 4 cap ships (if higher level) or up to 6 (if fresh out of the production lines, so relatively low-level). The easiest to pull this off with is TEC... 2 Dunovs, 1 Akkan, all rest Kol, and watch them burn.

Trying to get the hang of Advent. Disciples seem pretty bad compared to the other races noobships
Those Crusader things (Advent heavy cruiser) seem to be unstoppable though - Once I got over 10 of them they just begin demolishing entire fleets at a time, taking perhaps 1 or 2 losses due to how stupendously fast their shields recharge. Focus fire on a Capital ship and it's dead within a minute...
