Indeed it is, Lelouch's charecter is very well made and unique in modern anime.

Agreeing with this.

while I have to agree that there are more depressing anime around, I have to say that Now and Then, Here and There is pretty much one of those great series that you have only stomach to see once. ---

I wouldn't really call NTTH depressing. It just deals with very hard subject matter that most people in civilized nations have no experience with at all. Things like, child soldiers, rape, murder, rock-based-self-abortions really put an edge on that show.
Originally by: Dark Shikari Voices of a Distant Star is the most depressing of the ones I've seen. Its also the only anime I've ever cried during.
Personally I found Voices of a Distant Star rather pedestrian and boring. Maybe it was the clichT of 15-year-old super soldier schoolgirls that did it. Perhaps it was the B grade itano circus combat.
Or maybe it is just time that I hire a ghost empathiser.

The combat was unnecessary, the actual fighting pointless; what made it sad was that it was the ultimate in a long distance relationship... to say the least
A bit like "The Forever War."

Hellsing dub.
This is the first show I've ever seen where the dub is better than the sub, the British accents work wonders

I've always been an avid hater of dubs, but there are actually some good ones out there.
Cowboy Bebop, GitS SAC, Fullmetal alchemist (Got so bored of the last one. -_-)
It's been a long long time since I saw Trigun, so not sure whether I saw the dub or sub. -_- Either way, I loved it, so meh.
I don't watch a lot of anime, but from the ones that I've seen, these were definitely worth the time:
-Trigun -Ghost in the Shell (Haven't seen Solid State Society, but Movie 1,2(My favourite) and SAC 1st and 2nd gig were all awesome) -Cowboy Bebop -Anything from the guys that did Spirited Away, Howl's moving castle etc. (I think that was the same studio at least. >_>) ----------------------

Most of the anime already listed are more than worth seeing, so trying to basically add what hasn't already been said.
Akira, good condensed movie for the manga, director was the guy who made the manga so it matches up nicely. Bleach, even though its ongoing is so full of win it hurts. Ergo Proxy, just looks bad ass. Madlax, wasn't a -wow- series but was still good. Gilgamesh, if you don't mind a nice mind trip.. Desert Punk, just funny and so wrong, yet so right. Samurai Gun, samurai's with guns, prostitutes and government conspiracies... win. Speed Grapher, not much to say, a good slightly trippy series. Appleseed, a wicked movie with awesome CG effects and great sound tracks.
And listed below are some anime my fiance has, she likes the girly stuff. Cause despite all given evidence, I think there really are -some- real girls out there on teh interweb.
Ah! My Goddess, good even though its pretty soppy. Rumbling Hearts, suprisingly good romantic drama. Burst Angel, not really a girly series but has pretty heavy yuri influence. Shuffle!, adapted from an eroge, but pretty funny with good characterisation. Harem style ofc Negima!, which was kinda ok, worth the watch I suppose. Scrapped Princess, pretty standard but fleshed out 'princess' tale. Moon Phase, vampire romance action comedy w/e series, fiance loved this series. Midori Days, a fairly unique romantic comedy... he gets a little naked chick for a hand...
And if you feel like making yourself so depressed you almost feel like going emo and cutting yourself.
Basilisk, the supremely ****ed up Jp version of Romeo and Juliet... wtf... great watch if you are mentally stable.
Just pulled most of these from the shelf, with the exception of Bleach, which I refuse to watch in English cause it would just totally screw with how I see the characters I saw a 1min clip of Renji, Rukia and Byakuya speaking in English and I wish I hadn't...
Anyway, the above listed anime are at least worth checking out, some are better than others and if you didn't/don't like any of them, I couldn't care less.
Enjoy

Gilgamesh is weird design coupled with this very dark, psycho, totally apocalyptic and cynical view of mankind. the end just proves how twisted is the series, altho I kinda agree with it.
Desert Punk is just. that. good. and very comical, yet very true.
Scrapped Princess is that at the beginning, until you start to deal with spaceships and aliens. ---

That's what manga is for. Stopped following Bleach a while back, just got too Dragon Balls Z-ish for me. First bit was pure gold, though.
Just watched this Haruhi show. Was fun. Not sure I'd ever want to watch a second season, though.
Burst Angel... another fun show. Guns, explosions, robots, ******* (why is common name of human mammary glands censored?). How can you go wrong? Just don't expect much out of the plot.
No one mentioned Witch Hunter Robin yet? Good but slow. Iria, another maybe not-so-good show that I love.

That's a lot of books, and I really don't like myself that much, so I might have to pass. Especially if I have to read it all from a wiki page.

They don't take very long to read. I read them all in three days... of course, that's because I found myself almost completely unable to walk away from the screen during the course of reading them

I have seen/read most of these listed. The only ones that i really do not like though a lot of people seem to is Paranoia Agent and FLCL.
Don't know why. But then again i am one of those people that loved what happened in Death Note, i hate it when character get protection i.e. most anmie does it.
Also surprised no one has mentioned NHK, Prince of Tennis, Yaki Tate especially considering some of the other animes listed here.
