First off, this aint a whine thread and I won't be demanding anything. I definitely won't be having a cry and giving you my stuff if it doesn't happen.
I think it would be nice to hear more variation in sound effects, an enhancement/replacement of current sound effects, and to just plain add a lot in where there are none currently. Things such as, just for a few examples:
ò Constant ambient radio noise in high security space ò A rogue drone sending you a warning in an audible digital language ò A wide variety of weapon fire samples ò Concord informing you in a *****ly radio transmission that your ship will be destroyed ò The dull whir of an MWD overloading your engines ò The static ***** of shields failing ò A pirate transmission telling you to scamper ò The (incomprehensible) chatter of a news billboard ò An audio filter! etc. etc...
Aside from the ambient music from Mr. Hallur, I personally think EVE's sound is a bit lacking. You guys did a mad job on the graphics. If you ask me the picture won't be complete until the audio measures up. Are there any plans for an SFX enhancement?
So what's your opinion? Y/N? You just want to leave that 'Audio Enabled' box unticked?

The ambience is nice, but the only thing truly immersing is the launching and explosion of missiles at the moment. Additional samples to take advantage of would certainly liven up the game.

Eve has sound?
Well, that is something I hear a lot of. So many seem to think that voice and coms have to use the same output device. Me, I play with sound up and it is nice though it could use an improvement. There are several places that subtle sounds could be introduced to add to the overal effect of space travel. I do hope that CCP will have the time to work on this down the road.

While I'm certain that CCP has a lot of things on their plate, I too think more and better sound will significantly enhance the game experience at a level disproportionate to the actual amount of effort put into it by the developers.

The thing that bothers me about the sound is that it only seems to work about half the time. You always hear something, but certain things, like gunfire or explosions just disappear. Even warping sometimes it just seems like all the sound just cuts out. Then the sound effects will just mysteriously kick back in.
I've played EVE on many different computers and it always behaves the same way, so I'm 99% sure its not the sound drivers.

Yup, I proudly play with sound. Also, having voice comms and game sounds on two different devices = ftw. I have a USB headset that acts like its own soundcard for all my voice comms and it works well.

You know the sounds you hear are synthesized by your pod, right?
That is actually a good excuse for them not sounding that great, but it would certainly be nice if the sounds were improved.

I might play with sound if they made the different sounds toggle-able, or volume adjustable on an individual level.
I find the stargate sound, and especially the horrible warp sound, to be harsh.
Actually, I'd use sound if they just removed the warp sound altogether. I ******* hate that noise. *signature removed - please email us to find out why (include a link) - Jacques([email protected]) |

Some general improvement to the sound engine is needed, as well. All of the current sounds are extremely long and drawn out. What seems like a 4-5 seconds of rumbling from a cruise missile explosion is actually a 16 second long audio file. There doesn't seem to be any priority over what sounds are played either so no matter how many are incoming, it will load them all. This means that sounds are very likely to stack on top of eachother in most combat situations, and fighting enemies that (for example) fire a lot of small missiles creates a rather overpowering noise accompanied by some pretty horrendous lockups.
Not being able to adjust sound volume on an individual level amplifies the problem. The whole camera zoom / sound volume relationship seriously needs to go. Way to make players choose between actually seeing the combat and being able to tolerate the sounds of it

Funny, every once in awhile when I'm near a bunch of Concord and/or Faction ships, I hear bizarre radio chatter. So there is a tiny bit of this already in game I suspect. I don't know if NPC's really scan your hold for illegal items, but maybe thats what they are doing when I hear the chatter. ___________________________________________

seem to me ccp need to solve some more basic technical problem with audio. adjusting volume levels to certain effects in eve will be helpful. but im guessing ccp dosnt do much about it becoz they use a 3rd party audio liberary and nobody in their crew realy know how to use it properly. im guessing one dev manage somehow to make it work in a basic way and thats where he left it.
an example to this is eve music. you cant realy disable music in options audio tab, you can only lower volume to 0. on other applications and games doing so will usualy disable the music completly but in eve it dosnt.
to test this out just lower the volume all the way and then look at soundtrack window and see its still playing.
yes u could click stop on the soundtrack list and it seem to be stopping. but the game will start another soundtrack automaticly triggered by event. so u could never realy disable the music and save on resources. quile lame.
another example to how things arnt working properly at their base is disabling station enviroment. the sound of the enviroment will seem to stop, but once in awhile u could hear for a split second, almost as if escaping some 2nd layer "shut the audio up" WHILE its still playing.
again... ccp ur use of audio liberaries r quite lame, i wish u would sort this out like proper programmers do.

This. All of this. And the ability to alter the sound levels of each of these sources. And a rebalance of the current sound levels (not being able to turn down game sound effects (e.g. missiles, warp) without turning everything else down with it is just bad),

The sound in EVE is unfortunately lacking so much that... well dunno how much really, it lacks so much it need a whole new catagory for "lacking". And its both the sounds itself, and the way sound in general is implemented in the game. I really hope that by the time Ambulation is released we will see an update to sound in "EVE proper" aswell.
Please CCP, give sound the same kind of love, that you gave graphics with trinity!

Absolutely. For starters, surely by now we should have either a properly-balanced set of sound volumes or else, if that's beyond hope, give us enough resolution on the sound volume controls to let us do it manually to taste.
I much prefer to play with sound effects on - but sadly I often run with many of them disabled because I can't get a tolerable balance of the various sounds. I shouldn't have to zoom out to turn npc missile hits down (and what's with that anyhow).
And yes, some of the weapon sounds are dreadful - lasers that sound like machine-guns, "soggy" railguns and so forth. Definitely some love needed here! |

/fail for trolling. The OP's suggestions are all about stuff you certainly should hear. You most certainly WOULD hear the launching of your missiles as it would be internal to your ship, which contains air. The explosions however should be noiseless as sound does not travel without air.

Great Ideas here guys! I've done some work in studios as a sound engineer and have even done some producing. I know first hand this is not the hardest thing in the world to do. Here are my ideas. If you want super realism, you wouldn't hear too many sounds, only things attached to your boat; engine noise, missile launches, warp, and damage taking. You would NOT be able to hear other boats getting hit, unless they send out transmissions saying "Im Hit, Im Hit. Going down!" That kinda crap.
Depenging on the types of Propulsion Systems the ships have, you can EASILY model different sounds to suit it. Ion Propulsion drives literally sound like Wind, or a Jet Lighter.
Laser Turrets should sound like, well, Lasers. PEW PEW, imagine that.
Projectile Turrets would sound like normal real life guns. Maybe a little muffled since they're shot from outside the ship. If you want to delve deeper, artillery cannons can sound like Arty, and Auto cannons can sound more like machine guns (if thats what they are, no idea about gunnery)
Missles will ofcourse, sound like missiles. Rockets and standards would sound like your usual small missiles... maybe like a bottle rocket. Heavy's will sound deeper and louder. Torpedoes would be Really DEEP and Growl like.
When your shields would start failing, it will sound like sparking electrical wiring. Or maybe like a powering down transformer or something. When you start taking hull damage, it would sound like the bulkheads collapsing in a submarine or something.
Getting webbed would sound like your engine stalling and cutting out.
Getting warp scrammed would be similar to a powering down transformer or something.
Getting jammed could be static. Maybe depending on the type of jamming being done would effect the sound.
One great thing that they could implement, could be done two different ways. When taking damage, it would be great if you could hear it in surround sound... Now for the two ways of doing this
1) Originate the sound from where the damage was dealt. So lets say, a boat is firing at you from your 5 oclock position. Well, most of the sound would come from there. A boat is firing from your 9 oclock, sound would come from the front left speaker and the rear left. You catch my drift.
2)Make the sound Originate from the point on your boat that the damage is done. So lets say VISUALLY, the damage is being done to the front of your boat, sound comes from the front. Back left of the boat, sound comes from the rear left speaker.
Anyways, those are some of my ideas. I'll see if i can post up some more later if they come to mind.

I support this idea. Some sounds are OK, but others are horrid (park your ship next to an acceleration gate and listen to your brain slowly liquify through your ears).
At the very least, give us more control over the audio. While on that note, give us also more control over the in-game effects. I am sick and tired of trying to click on things while the screen is constantly shaking due to the missile bombardment my ship is taking. I would love to have the option to just turn that off. |

It would also be nice if the "stacking" of different sounds could be fixed. For example, when your fleet with 30+ people just have jumped through a gate and your FC decides to gang warp you all to the next gate, causing everyone to de-cloak at the same time and thus shattering the ears of everyone involved.

Just a few of the sound effect examples you mentioned would add so much to the game. Some sounds like that exist in stations, and that is why I turn off the music while I am in the station. We are aware of the utter suck that are both the sound engine, and the sounds it produces. Look at the jobs page. Interested?
Guess they still haven't found anyone, because the job opening is still there. However, I still think EvE needs more and better tactical warning sounds.

I would like to just put /signed but that is against the rules now because it lacks content so here I go typing a sentence so I do not get in trouble with the forum moderators for saying in the simplest way that I agree with the OP.

So many great ideas in this thread, I just hope someone in a position of authority within CCP takes the time to read them. Please CCP take the time to make the sfx match the graphical goodness of Trinity.

This topic is getting great replies, just not many
It is on the drawing board. As I recall they are working on it at the moment.
There hasen't been alot of talk about the sound in EVE but I do recall them saying they want to improve the sound as well as the music.

Do want.
Sound is something that players have wanted done for a while, I agree that now that we got awesome ship models we need sound to get looked at. Maybe they'll surprise us in the coming expansion?

/signed Me wants so badly. What's with the Amarr class graphics and Minmatar class sounds? Okay, sound doesn't travel in a vacuum, got that. Anything attached to, striking, or being fired from my hull is definitely going to be able to be heard. Please don't give the excuse that I'm in a pod. Pod is liquid filled and sound will be amplified against it. As the OP said, radio, drones, weapons fire, MWD, AB, EWar and so on. Even the jumpgate impacts on the hull as it flings the ship across the AU's.
C'mon CCP, you folks did such a fan-fraggin'-tastic job on the graphics, hows about a little love for the sound? I don't have attention deficit disor....., oh look, a kitty! |

Absolutely agree!
What I'd also love is stuff like:
- Voice alert for when you're being fired upon "You/we are under attack." (track down that nice lady who did the original voices?)
- Voice alerts for anything and everything else? Say, for decloaking, completion of a scan, incoming transmission (chat convo invite), how about an "Accessing.." when you're trying to load up some sort of server data like the market? All toggleable, of course!
- Factional music tracks for station interiors and/or sovereignty zones
- Random NPC radio chatter at stargates/stations, or announcement/welcome/travel alerts
Basically, anything that increases atmosphere/immersion would be great. You know, to try and distract us from Spreadsheet Online.

In addition i'd love to see this enhancement. You only hear sounds that affect YOU.
I think nothing better captures the helplessness, empytness, harshness of space than watching your corpmate get pummeled and hear nothing. Then suddenly you hear a loud explosion/collision and you immediately realize the enemy has turned their attention onto you!
I think that scenario really is what brings SciFi lovers to the genre. _______________________________________________

OAn a side note, it would be nice to have audible warnings of warp jamming etc. There is no graphic to let you know youve been jammed so, some sort of sound would be helpful to alert you. Even the webber has a sound, a target painter has sound and many others so why not a warp jammer? They do for the ship that's using them but not for the target.
Oh and yes, Eve has sound, you just need to turn it on
I have to wear glasses to play Eve, especially reading the chat channel etc but they hurt my eyes after a while so an audible warning is essential to me. I am not alone here no doubt.

Definately not alone. There's a lot of info crammed into the UI. But FYI. Check out the overview. With Trinity (i think it was), there are not little icons next to ships when they are using EW against you. _______________________________________________

It's very common for industries such as gaming to hire outside companies to do sound and music. I think this creates at times some lackluster integration of these elements in the gaming experience especially since they are hired during the late development of the game and have to turnover results rather quickly. I'm a sound designer myself and I find frustrating that sound design is foolishly overlooked as an unimportant element. I agree with the suggestions below. They're such obvious recommendations it's strange to me it wasn't implemented with the Trinity graphics update. The graphics update is about further immersing the user into the experience and some intelligent communication design within the audio would have added to that. -- autechre - ep7 - track 1: rpeg estevancarlos.com |

CCP clearly donÆt care about sound and in fact have gone backwards with a worse sound engine now then this time last year. We have gone from having hardware sound in Vista to software sound because of CCP. I its not MS fault like people always say as we did have hardware sound in Vista it was CCP who removed it. ____ Telltale sign of their presence is non-linear teleportation (www.eve-online.com/races/theodicy/Theodicy_All.pdf)

with the addition of optional computer voice notifications.
Shields failing, hull breach, proximity alert, things like that with one of those cool female computer voices like the old Mech Warrior games had.
Being able to tweak them on/off or even at a certain % of sheilds, armor, etc would be even better.

I never realized that a company would hire out for the sound work. I'd definately like to see some budget swing to get some better sounds :)
Oh and can we still get this moved off to a more appropriate forum so we can get better exposure for the topic?

I proudly play with sound on and the music is still good, although I do alternate it with my own playlists here and there. Even just up-sampling the existing sounds to a higher quality would be nice, since every time I fire my Myrm's Ion battery it sounds terrible!

I have to agree, the sound has not been touched all that much as far as I have noticed. All that we have got is a few new (admittedly nice) music tracks, so it would be awsome to get a larger update.
