I think "name freeing" should be done if one of the following are met:
-The character was deleted. (in my opinion deleting the character means the name is once again up for grabs. There is really no excuse not to do this as the game requires a 12 hour wait period from saying you want to delete the character to actually being able to delete the character, and even then it asks if you want to go threw with it).
-The account has not trained any skill for a min of six months, has not been logged into for six months, has a sum total of 10 million isk in assets and wallet and only 2 million sp or less on the character. (IE likely a trial account that never was upgraded to full). Also, a email should be sent to the account owner roughly one week prior to the deletion if in the event the owner wishes to reclaim the account.
-The name and or account was permantly banned by a CCP employee. (Though this can potentally have a problem with it, the orginal owner is clearly never going to be able to reuse the account or character.)
Short list of options but personally I think if a character or account falls under these the name should be available.

I disagree with the OP, having all the easy names like Rambo locked away makes us work so much harder to find a really good name... or perhaps a wyrd way of spelling said name... I would like to think that CCP started several dozen accounts before the server went live and made characters with all those lame... I mean easy names like rambo thus eliminating them from play.

Not sure why ur so sad with you replies. I think the op is right in a way, if the name doesnt get used for so long, so what.
Its a suggestion obviously not aimed at you, since lets face it, you ahve no say, nor do i.
How would you feel if you created an account 3 years ago, and stoped playing, hen went back to your aco**** and foun dthat it was deleted...
Dont mater wether they play or not...if the name isn't offensive, no valid reason why it can't sa in circulation...
OMG the name Dylan Christopher is in use...lets kill dylan becuase some antsy new mum wants the name, so she can call her brat dylan... --------------------

Actually a petition for emulating a known character will stop that, and yes it does invalidate the argument.
Names are unique in EvE because it's the only thing holding the reputation and the history of EvE is bound to the Avatar's names.
In that vein, an Avatar with a name taken that surely has no reputation would seem reasonable to me. (Hence I guess the criteria of x SP, NPC corp only, not used in abc years). I'd probably add to that "And did not subscribe for more than y months."
It would be interesting to see the Analysis of how many names this actually effected with the different rules. To be fair to the original account holders, an email should be sent to the original owner informing them that their character was to be sent to the biomass processing queue, before deletion/renaming. To be absolutely safe, it would be necessary to enable re-naming characters who "lost their names".
Is the effort worth it to save people the effort of coming up with an original name? How many new players would it really effect?

When I heard the movie 'Rambo' (then rumoured to be titled 'John Rambo') was coming out I checked in game to see if the name was taken. Well this John Rambo guy seems to be active, and his title is 'to survive war, you gotta become war.' Pretty cool I think. What I think is really sad is if you check the names Aragorn, Gandalf and so on you find a 4 year old character who's still in their starter corp. All in all it's for the best, since you don't have Gandalf flying around and talking smack in local!
And deleting someone's character is bad, but I would suggest allowing someone to delete a character even if their account is invalid. Perhaps a new player could 'request name,' then the account holder would get a e-mail saying 'your character name xXcoolname69Xx in EVE online has been requested.' They could then follow a link to terminate the character, or perhaps even resubscribe, profit for CCP!
What I do think is in need of change is the taking of corp names. Maybe 1 man corps should be deleted after a certain period with no member logins, and dump all assets in the CEO's hangar. Also, variations on the same name could be prevented. I wanted to use a historical reference for a corp name a while back, searched for it and found 5 slight variations, all 1 man corps. My particular version was free but I didn't want to be version 6 so I decided against it.

Three years inactive I can agree with... tbh, I think it calls for a discussion of 'how long is too long' when considering that an inactive player might someday come back. The guy who made his trial account, failed miserably and didn't come back and/or the guy who played for 2 years and left the game for whatever reason and hasn't been seen in the last three years probably isn't coming back... but then again, I myself once did a 6.5 year bid (out of a possible 10) in a state pen... if I'd had an MMO account beforehand, it would be nice to re-up my acct, read about all the new stuff on the forums and archives for a week or so, then find a new place in the game as a means of helping me stay out of trouble (which is why I play now, tbqfh)... and a 3 year limit would mean my character and anything related to it was gone - starting over might be fun, but it might suck, too, if I had acquired the fruits of much time spent and many in-game accomplishments.
so again, "how long is too long?"

Would you have cared much if you had to chose a new name? Would you have been ok with forfeiting the name by taking such a long break from the game?

if i came back and my character name was taken i would have been very upset as it is my normal handle and ive been using it for something like 10 years. granted the character itself wasnt a big issue as back in 2003 you started with 0 SP and when i came back i had 800k, so it was a nice little boost when i expected to have very few skills.
but yeah i would not have been thrilled about losing my name. |

With billions upon billions of perfectly in-character names possible, I don't see how this is a problem for characters, but in regards to corporation tickers I completely agree. There are only what, 6500 possible combinations, and only if you include numbers? With about 3500 corporations, finding an available ticker relevant to the name of your corporation is one hell of a task.
I was lucky to have created the Hidden Court years ago, because I recently considered created a new corporation, and quickly thought better of it after using the People & Places ticker searcher for about an hour. __________________________________________________ 'The illiterate of this century are not those who cannot read and write; but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.' |

Some people do. That's life.
But seriously, some names are taken by characters on trials that have been out of use for years. Doesn't it seem silly to keep them unavailable forever? But, yeah. These forums seriously need some indicator that the post has ended and the sig has started.

Any character that hasn't made a login in over a year, should be reverted to "Caldari Citizen 1232143"... and whatever.
SIMPLE... FIXED.
Now if we can just get CCP to implement a common sense fix for once.

I'm not sure what to think about this one... if I could, I'd drop the 'Highwind' from my name, since that's not part of my online moniker and never has been. Unfortunately, just 'Rook' went in 2004, so I had to choose a second name on a whim.
It's not especially original, but I don't mind so much since it leaves my options open as far as RPing is concerned. I'd like the name I think of as 'mine', but I have no idea if the guy using it is active or not.. names are important, but I can probably live with this one.
I'm rambling. To be brief, here's my two ISK: if the name you were going to use is taken, take time to think up something else, 'cause you can't change it later unless you're willing to lose what might end up being years of work put into a character by starting over. No to name scrubbing without confirmation from the account owner that they're done with it. |

I recently reactivated my account after a long time, I'm delighted to find all my random junk is still there and I have an extra 700,000 skillpoints! If I had found my character was deleted, or renamed it would have been a bit crap. Then again, I could have made a new character and got on with the game. And if the cool names I tried were taken I could have kept going and found one eventually. The main problem with renaming characters is that if you try to look up old friends they may not remember you, and you won't be in their address book (unless a link is added). Also, who decides which characters are to be junked? It's dodgy ground, so alert the account owner and give them the option to terminate their characters, otherwise leave it alone.
Does dev time really need to be spent allowing people to reclaim a name that is the creation of someone else anyway? Create your own name, be a cool guy, and then you will have created a new cool name! I think Xue XinMao is pretty good actually... |
