Reasons:
It started with the Need For Speed initiative. You can read about it here: http://myeve.eve-online.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&bid=412 and http://myeve.eve-online.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&bid=426 . Well, seems like a big part of it was for: http://www.eve-online.com/pressreleases/default.asp?pressReleaseID=43 . More like a 1 year plan for them to reduce load on the servers so they could cram in more subscribers, than actually reducing the lag for the already paying customers. And Steam of all places? I don't know if you know, but I sure know what type of individuals I do not want from that community where there is a abundance of em.
So, whats my point? The point is that to "me" it seems like this game is turning/turned into more of a cash cow for the Money Sucking Vampires. And it wouldn't be in my interest to feed them as the focus has largely shifted from PVP to PVE milking. And a more sociably interactive environment. I'm sorry, but if I wanted that, I would rather just go to a more specific forum, outside, to a discussion group etc. And rather talk about some more important issues like fuel, food supply etc than most likely EVE related and how the Armageddon looks like a d**k.
Taking in other factors like the Wingman offer where they obviously wanted more unique subscribers, as they are more compelled to get another account for PVP, PVE, Scouting, trading etc. Wouldn't surprise me if the ôPower of Twoö offer reappears some time soon.
And if you want to know what this game is turning more into and focus on you can check it out here: http://myeve.eve-online.com/updates/plannedfeat.asp
Another is probably WoD. But, it isn't EVE, so it really isn't in my interest. But you can guess why. Even tho I tried Redemption and played Bloodlines.
Another thing that bugs me is the game design and lack of fixing and balancing. The different races and their ships got these slot layouts: X number of turret or launcher slots and then some open slots. Caldari usually had 2 open on some ships(mostly on the turret boats) and Amarr 1 open slot. In those open slots (I assume, as what I know no Dev has confirmed) there to fix the ships deficiencies. Caldari with their mid slot tackling deficiency. So tanking goes up and reliefs a mid slot. So whats my point? My point is that it took em MONTHS or even YEARS to introduce the named Shield Transporters. So you could make a feasible setup. Another is the recently changed Caldari ships. I thought this was a Multiplayer game where complexity/finesse would get rewarded/a edge/prioritized? And interaction between players that relies on each other. Not to mention risk. Eos, Gallente Ewar, none nano Amarr recon, SW-900 drones(cheap hack or something) etc. Another one is the easy means of evasion(you probably know what) and avoiding consequence thru the logoff timer. Where CCP can't be reasoned with. Even when hinted towards such action. I can only guess who they are trying to protect with it and why.
Another one for me is how the petition system is made up, its restrictive. Also, i petitioned a issue where a locater agent got stuck and keeps telling me he is busy. I petitioned it 3 months ago where i had to bug report it too. And its still isn't resolved.

Culture: After the t20 incident and him remaining within the corporation, I wonder how it is. As there has been little follow ups, updates or reports of abuse. And its here where I have minimal trust towards CCP and their inclination towards reporting abuse to its paying customers. Thanks to their way of handling it. I would think that most/many of the employed within the corporation plays the game. Which is a problem if they start to abuse their position and the information they can get for their own self driven fulfillment. Problematic also in the sense with the employee and his ties to others. So, to what extent ôdoö they restrict and audit? Not to mention thoroughness. CCP Arkanon still has to make some points with its customers. He has so far only been a advocate for CCP, rather than the paying customers. http://myeve.eve-online.com/devblog.asp?a=author&p=CCP%20Arkanon I would rather call him the Damage Control and Assessment Appointee.
My other issue is if employees are allowed to post with an char that doesn't points to them. Restrictions like these would be good to know. As CCP stands for ôCrowd Controlö Productions after all.
But I guess it won't be answered with all of the above.
Expectations and Speculations:
Ambulation project would possibly help out in to further reduce lag as players remain docked and putting less strain on the system node. Also attract those who are more extrovert and into social- and interactive- interfaces. I guess combined with EVE Voice and maybe even lip syncing it would have an edge over the competition. Found this while thinking and searching about it: http://secondlife.reuters.com/stories/2008/04/03/vivox-to-lipsync-no-voice-for-you/
The artists that CCP employs has obviously done a very good job with their artistic skill and creativity. As well as the theme. And in there lies a business opportunity for Nvidia and CCP. With using EVE:Online for marketing their brand as well as a selling tool. As well as putting more focus on their cards. In worst case actively restrict the competitors.
Another opening option would be advertisement. In secluded areas like in hallways. But I guess it would depend on the freedom of movement and structure. How it would be accepted by the community would lie on the trial of the player based advertisement and its acceptance and final inclusion for corporate type(Nvidia/Intel?).

Hopes:
Well, I hope that the game will focus more on PvP.. And hope those that are more outspoken drives it towards such direction. I hope the logoff timer issue will be adjusted and CCP stops being such protectionists about their cash money flow bears. That they drop their NFS craze, I still wonder what was left out because of it. Not to mention the restrictions it imposes to further develop the gameplay.
So, the primary reason for me to break away would be CCP and its focus towards PVE, subscribers, lack of insight and Money Sucking Vampires.
And hopefully I wont get flamed or my post erased. As I think I made some pretty good points. And I would like to know if anyone else feels the same.
Blast of Silence and Soylent Green, nice movies.

tl;dr
Shortened version - EVE is turning too commercial, too much PVE and losing what it originally stood for, stuff takes ages to fix and petition time sucks.

Quote: Ship Sub-System Targetting
The ability to target individual sub-systems of a ship in EVE is an old and oft-repeated player request, giving combat pilots more tactical options, such as disabling certain native ship abilities before closing in for the kill (or the ransom). However, combat is currently far too short for this kind of tactical decision-making û and of course there are still some thorny questions, such as which sub-systems are targetable (warp drive, shield recharge, cap recharge?) and when are they vulnerable? (After shield is down? Then what happens to armor tanks? After armor is down? Are we then talking about structure tanks too?).
/me targets warp core.
/me no longer cares about your WCS

I don't WANT to flame you, but honestly you already made up your mind.
1) You think that Need for Speed is bull. But you completely ignore the test last week on SISI where we were testing the new network protocols required to do the Infini-Band conversion later this year. CCP has repeatedly acknowledged this is a LONG TERM project, not waving a magic wand.
2) You are STILL whining about T20? Gadzooks, did he steal your personal BPO from you? 0 effect on the game and its subsribers. Next time you think about whining about T20 why don't you take a look at your government officials and start a revolution. Its a fricken game...
3) Ships have different slot layouts? Different modules that effect them? Aren't "The same"? I take it a Aegis cruiser and an Adams destroyer are the same too....
4) More whining about not being able to catch someone. Maybe try harder, us semi-Carebears have problems getting pirates to fight us.
5) PvP focus? Why doesn't CCP add more stuff for PvE'ers? Eve's rules constantly are in favor of PvP, its new toys are always in favor of PvP, its balance is constantly in favor of PvP. To me "PvP" in your mind appears to be "Pew Pew, Counter-strike in Space". Guess CCP wants a larger picture than "I undock, blow up a n00b, dock. Hurray, I'm PvPing".
But like I said, you already made up your mind. Stuff, please contract to me? Preferably in a HighSec system

Well I for one certainly hope ccp doesn't lean towards PVP. Eve would get boring real quick. Understand that i'm not saying get rid of PVP. Far from it. I like having lots of different things to do, not just one.
I have plenty of grumbles about how ccp does things too but hey.. its their game and frankly being in their shoes has to be a bit of a challenge.
Also keep in mind that EvE is one of the very few subscription based games actualy hanging in, so that would indicate to me that not everyone is as dis-satisfied as you are with EvE.

The Need for Speed initiative, which has reduced lag and as a result added the ability for larger numbers of concurrent subscribers is ... bad? Baloney.
CCP is constantly fixing things. They have fixed more old-old-old bugs in the past year than I can think of. For example: Amarr finaly got a buff, drones got some fixing, drone interface is much better, new graphics, fixed graphical issues, fixed MANY balancing issues (NOS anyone?) .. and so much more. To be frank you're viewpoint must be pretty narrow to be unable to see all the changes.
PVE focus? HAH. I suppose heavy interdictors diden't really happen. They are a pvp jockeys wet dream (every pvp corp out there has at least one dictor pilot). What about the torp buff? ... the raven, or any caldary BS is now a viable and somewhat scary pvp ship! What about the Titans? those are PVE boats? really? I had no idea! What about ... oh forget it.
Your ultra-narrow, see only what you want, viewpoint is your downfall. Your going to quit so why bother.

He's valid in pointing out the t20 instance, they did promise more information to the playerbase and its been over a year since that promise and they've released nothing. Basically its just typical stonewalling. Ignore an issue until it goes out the minds of the mainstream populace.
T20 we all know should have been fired immediately. The BPOs should have been removed from BOB immediately, not 9 months later. The idea that their upper management was all unavailable for that length of time is ludicrous in today's wired world. Basically they made a scapegoat of some anonymous mid level manager in the hopes that folks would forget, but they haven't.
As for the PVE to PVP thing, well the HIC is a heavy tool for PVPers, something that the PVEers can't effectively counter in any way. So I hardly see a shift in balance. (Yes an ECM burst will let you away but in low sec and hi sec this will also get you shot by the gate guns and kill you...)
PVP in the invention/manufacturing area is stifled by CCP allowing the T2 BPOs to remain in game. These people whatever they paid for them, whether in isk or lottery time have gotten their value from them. As it stands now it is not possible to invent and sell 80% of t2 items because the BPO holders undersell the cost of invention and manufacturing. It is time to remove all t2 BPOs from the game without compensation. You've had a free advantage for a year longer than you should have. Time to give a level playing field to all.

OK, going to jump in here.
Need for speed - We have fixed literally over 1000 bugs as part of this initiative. We have changed serverside processes to use caching of data to flush to the db (f.e. the bounty 20 minute summary system), when ever we fix a bug we look at the code and say ... could we tweak this to be faster?
Infiniband/HPC - This is a MAJOR project. as I have stated in a number of threads, you can not just take EVE and drop it into the new HPC cluster. EVE has it's own cluster management system, this has be be rewritten to work with the functions provided by MPI to get any improvements. We are releasing parts of this as we complete this work. For example the new network lib's. This work serves multiple purposes. 1) better network lib's. 2) groundwork got HPC and Infinband. 3) ability to establish 1 network lib for client and server coms (we currently use 2 (1 for server to server and 1 for client to server)).
I distinctly remember a node crashing with 300 players in it. We now have Jita that regularly supports more than 900 players, it is not fast but it still works ... that is tripling the capacity ...
I remember when the big fleets were 30-40 a side ... now it is 200+ aside and you still complain. We have done major reworks and upgrades to our systems to support the style of game that the players want.
Is it perfect? No. Are we trying? Hell yes. Will we keep trying? Of course, why else would we be here?
And as for the 'Money Sucking Vampires' ... This is one of the greatest blessings that EVE has ever received. It has allowed us to take a critical look at our core tech and take the lessons learned from EVE, make the needed changes, test it in the new development pipelines used on WOD and then integrate it into EVE if it provides a performance gain. We have also taken the 'Test First' (unit testing and automation) approach to development with the new projects and allow us to build automation and unit testing frameworks for better code control and quality. This work is now being integrated into the EVE codebase to bring you those improvements.
As for game balance issues. When we look at an issue our first question is 'What is causing this behavior?'. What I mean by this is what is causing people to use carriers as jump freighters? Oh Logistics is really hard and time consuming ... lets have a look at that. What can we do to stop this behaviour without destroying logistics. Ok, so we introduce Jump Freighters ... now how do we make sure that these are not a 'free ticket logistics system ... the list goes on. We are consistently checking and refining things ... it is very hard todo as players always come up with more ways to use something than we do ... but we learn and adapt ...

1. It's biggest intent and purpose seems to have been for the Steam announcement.
2. Funny as it is. I have the Flameburst Precision Light Missile BPO The employees are still allowed to play the game.
3. Your point is? Slot layout design has a lot to do with the different races deficienies. 4. Why blame it on me when the target should of scouted the gate and checked if it was clear or hostiles in local?
5. And what "stuff" was left out because of the NFS initiative? And changed for it at the cost of gameplay.

Ive been playing for 2+ years over which time the player base active and online has increased by a massive margin - up to 40k players simultaneously. And yet the game just gets better and better: more to do, more content, jaw dropping graphics and really if Im honest the performance hasnt got any worse.
Sure there are things Id like to see improved. Some ships need tweaking, some aspects of the game could do with a brush up (bounty hunting, smuggling) and there are the occasional bugs and lag spikes that annoy. But when I consider how far EVE has come in that two years - and kept me playing and playing - Im consistently impressed.
Call me a 'fanboi' if you like but for the neutral onlooker its important to remember that of the thousands of players that play eve only tiny tiny minority complain. Im inclined to think they'll complain about anything and everything....

Seriously, Id love to see a Heavy Industry expansion: new industrial vessels spouting gouts of flames and smoke churning through belts, heavy merchant ships touting armor and weaponry, Biolab stations, exotic minerals and weird composite materials, mining colonies and refineries hanging in orbit over planets, ships sucking swirls of plasma and gases from stars, archeological ruins and lost AIs to be hacked and plundered for forgotten tech. Corps being sold and taken over in a dynamic public shares system, corporate profit and loss graphs...
This stuff is the bed rock of what every carrier and HAC fights over and fights for. Id love for CCP to drive this kind off thing on: its long overdue.

Same here. I am not an industrialist (yet), but i would be happy about improving the industrial side of eve, as i may try it.

1. It's biggest intent and purpose seems to have been for the Steam announcement.
2. Funny as it is. I have the Flameburst Precision Light Missile BPO The employees are still allowed to play the game.
3. Your point is? Slot layout design has a lot to do with the different races deficienies. My point was that it took em months or even years to bring out the named Shield Transporters in order to start making feasible setups and arrangements. And for what i know, those slot layouts been in the game for a long time.
4. Why blame it on me when the target should of scouted the gate and checked if it was clear or hostiles in local?
5. And what "stuff" was left out because of the NFS initiative? And changed for it at the cost of gameplay.
1) - Nope ... was well underway BEFROE steam was even suggested. 2) - You complain about Dev's playing the game AND about us not balancing things .... hmmmm no comment! 3) - See above ... 4) - not relevant ... no comment. 5) - Actually most of the stuff that seems to get 'cut' as you so eloquently put it is the content that the industrialists, builders, corp managers etc have been screaming for for longer than most of the imbalance threads ... personally I think we should do a WHOLE expansion just for them ... but can you imagine the whine-a-thon that would generate ... but might be worth it ... goes to talk to the content guys.
1. Can you tell me the exact date then?
2. On TQ i do.
3. How about confirming it.
4. It is relevant. Not commenting on it just shows how reluctant you are on that subject.
5. How about telling me what stuff was cut out then? And let me and us decide.

1. I don't get it - you're asking for a specific date at which the Need For Speed initiative was started? What point could that possibly have? Clearly if you mistrust them enough to ask those questions in the first place you won't believe the answers anyway.
2. The conditions that the players create on tranquility can't really be simulated very easily on Singularity. I think that it's important that those involved in balancing ships and modules play the game as much as we do.
3. Balance changes take time do design and implement - you're leaving out that while it took X time to implement a certain balance, the devs were also considering a dozen different ways to implement said balance, developing new features, and analyzing what else needs to be balanced and how to do so. It took X time to implement a change, but what should really be said is that it took X time to implement all the changes that too place in that time.
4. I'm not really sure what you're talking about here...
5. So you expect him to list every feature that didn't make it into the game due to lag considerations? Praytell, where do they keep said list? Or should he just recite it all from memory? And why the hell should YOU get to decide what makes it in? ---------------- Tarminic - 35 Million SP in Forum Warfare Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.81 (Updated 4/8) |

Ignore the whine-a-thon - go for the corp management tool, and the industrial stuff.
just an aside: There's a whole few levels of things that are missing from the interaction with the game world. For example: Our ships are supposed to have crews. Last time I checked things, real world crews are BLOODY EXPENSIVE. But in eve our crews are free and they work for nothing. I realize that for most people that would be a detraction from the pure PvPness they are looking for but if ever CPP needed another isk sink, please consider weekly and monthly crew bills. Combat ships should be expensive to have even when they are sitting in dry dock. And the first bill should be sent when you assemble a ship.

Don't you realize that Eve and CCP are conspiracies? THEY DON'T EVEN EXIST!

When CCP stops playing the game, and starts caving in to player attitudes to this degree, EVE dies.
Theres a widespread belief in this game that ISK and Skill Points are not the tools that decide the course of battle; it is the skills and tactics of the players. Skill and tactics are derived from actually playing the game, and that is something you can't quite connect with unless you are actually there, participating in pos sieges, roaming in nano gangs, mining in lowsec and dying to pirates, gatecamping, and all the other activities that the thousands of us do every day.
In the year that followed the BoB Developer controversy, the number of new balance complaints increased considerably (many of which have since been rectified, but others are still popular points of contention). A lot of people were calling for the balance department member's heads, because of the negative impact some of their proposed solutions would have in the game. I don't think forced limitations in what CCP employees could do in game exactly helped this situation. How are the developers supposed to make EVE the best game they can if they aren't allowed to play it and experience it for all that it is?
Lingorm, I'm amazed you dignified this idiot with replies as much as you did. :)
