You have my sympathy.
Item value is poo, but that's not the matter. The real issue is that the self-destruction option is really close to another option commonly used. I been jumping in/out of station moving things last few days and expressed my concern on this matter recently: "almost self-destructed alot of times now, really poor position". And like you, I never knew how to cancel it.
Somehere here said it's just to self-destruct again, and that that information is given when you self-destruct in the first place? Well, I blew up quite a few ships and a couple of pods, and I never seen that message. That's when I deliberately blew up my stuff. I wonder how someone that accidently selfdestructed would see that.
The GM might've been a bit harsh, expecting your things back is a bit borderline, but what CCP really needs to do is to fix the bloody useless UI in this game. It's far from logical, menu browsing keep 'resetting' or accidently kicking off too early/wrong, etc. It's very sensitive, and poor positioned. All menu choices, overload buttons, everything minimum size and positioned next to things you actually do use all the time.
In that sense CCP really need to get a grip. I can't believe I say this but.. the UI was easier to use and less messy in 2005 than it is now. Some development isn't for the better.. Best game on the market, worst UI.

By the time I came back there was nothing left, people scavenged my stuff and my 5 Billion+ ISK ship an mods were gone...
I should have opened a petition, yes I should have, should have claimed a "Hacked" account....

Well, now that I think about it... 1 month break = $15 less for CCP Which potentially means several less cups of coffee for CCP gone, which leads to cranky devs, which means EVE will failure cascade because the devs will be too busy throwing tantrums to fix anything. Congrats, you (potentially) killed EVE! Whine fulfilled, can we go home now?

Anyone ever think that the Devs intentionally designed this way? Picture two of them talking:
Dev 1 "Hey do you think we should make the self destruct screen different from the eject screen?"
Dev 2 "Why would we need to spend time on that?"
Dev 1 "Well to make sure someone doesn't blow up his ship accidentally."
Dev 2 "Are you joking that would be funny! Plus we could just chalk it up to natural selection at its finest!"
Remember: "That which does not kill you, makes you giggle. And tends to change your native language to Smackinese." |

I think any time anyone does anything they should be forced to type in a text displayed on screen, all hidden like rapidshare's anti-spam ones. That way it not only prevents user negligence AND accidental concordings, but it also helps stop macro miners.

look at all the morons who pretend that the EVE UI is completely usable just in order to be able to flame someone on the forums ...
To the OP: yes, EVE is full of that kind of crap, most of us are used to it by now (Item Database update anyone btw.?). The community you are seeing here is partly responsible for it not getting fixed - instead of acknowledging problems and being constructive, it takes every opportunity to troll other players.
EVE Online: a cold, cruel world where (RL-)rich people replace their losses with GTCs sold to poor students who need to farm ISK to afford their play time ...

Theres no such thing as a perfect UI, of course eves could use improvement. But thats no reason to justify whining so much over laziness, I can't remember how many times that little popup, that everyone else apparently ignores, has saved my ship :P The word layout is very different, it's like mistaking a 5 dollar for a 50, sure they're the same size, same color even, but the whole layout is changed for the most part. The only thing they could do is color the box differenly for the illiterate, but that would neglect the colour blind, maybe they should make it a different shape, like a stop sign or a hazard sign. But why stop there, lets just have eve voice talk to you, incase you're blind. But then we'd be leaving out helen keller, how about we have a mobile usb launcher shoot 1 nerf missile at the user for eject, and 2 the user for self destruct. _______________________________________________ Minmatar will always go faster than you, get over it. |

There are other places in the forums where the UI is beeing constructively criticized. I think most people do not pretend that the UI is flawless, maybe you are pretending that the OP is.
This thread is not a good place to talk in a constructive manner because the OP wasn't constructive in the first place and so flaming is what's happening here.
And by pointing with the finger at others it will not get any better, how can you expect people acknowledging problems and being constructive after reading the OP's statements?

CBA to wade through 5 pages to see if someone posted this already, but...
Quote:
Are Your Sure?
If you self-destruct your ship you will lose it! Are you sure you want to initiate the 2 minute self-destruct sequence?
To cancel a self-destruct sequence you should select self-destruct again (if any of your ships is already self destructing this will cancel it).
That is a pop up that comes up when you select self desctruct. You then have to hit 'YES' for the self destruct to actually take place.

I can't remember, but I think you have a "Do you really want to push that red button" warning when you do a self destruct. Not hard to say to yourself "Umm... this may not be a good idea". Kind of like when you delete files in your computer and it ask you, "Do you really want to delete this file?" It's like a second chance. Say No.

This the result of a Senior GM's ruleriding. There is something called being fair, but this is far for that.
My subscription cancel message: I managed somehow to do a self-destruct instead of eject, to that I lost a CovOps, 2x 5mil rigs and a Sisters Scanprobe Launcher + several other modules and scan probes, about a total cost of 90mil isk. There are no information about how to cancel a self-destruct on the entire site and I didn't see ingame notice about it either.
GM XXXXX won't give me the stuff back, so I have no other choice than to cancel my subscription for a month to clearly show you what my opinion about this matter is. I have lost something due to bad customer service and customer understanding, so this will in end be your loss too.

Yeah. Coupla years ago I put up something like 20 mega beams for 150mil each on behalf of my corp. I left them up there for a while on the off-chance but no one bit.
Ended up reimbursing the corp for the tax.
And then there was the time I sat waiting to log on to join a convoy heading back into 0.0. Half an hour spent staring at the login screen and I never noticed that I wasn't in the system I thought I was. Strike one Apoc with a cargo hold full of goodies and at a guess a 10mil clone.
That was a couple of years ago and I'm still here. Guess I don't fail as bad as the OP. -- (Sarcastic mission running veteran, 4+ years)

My sig says it all. You canceled because either you misread the core design of EVE stating that mistakes in EVE should be costly, or you feel that customer support should reimburse accidentally destroyed items even when the game revolves around accidents being part of the risk. Enjoy a game with fewer consequences to playing carelessly.

Its like the OP putting a noose round his neck, jumping off a ledge then suing the rope company for not supplying instructions on how not to hang your self.
Actually its even worse than that because the "how to get out of hanging" instructions were given to him except he didn't bother to read them because the writing wasn't good enough for him.
Classic, when you leave I bet the average IQ of the player base rises.

BWAHAHAHAHA!!!
You selfdestructed yourself. AND then didnt pay atention to the GIANT WARNING MESSAGE that tells you how to abort. AND then didnt ask anyone else. OR loggofskied. OR docked. OR changed system. THEN you go and insult the quailty of CCPs service for not giving you back your stuff.
So long, and dont let the cluster door hit you on the way out.

AFAIK you also get insurance for self destructing a ship. They get the same kind of compensation as a noob for doing something stupid, the own loss part is simply higher because OP choose to do the stupid thing with a T2 ship full of goodies.
The noob doesn't get his security status restored by a GM though. So why should GM's interfere with this?
