This the result of a Senior GM's ruleriding. There is something called being fair, but this is far for that.
My subscription cancel message: I managed somehow to do a self-destruct instead of eject, to that I lost a CovOps, 2x 5mil rigs and a Sisters Scanprobe Launcher + several other modules and scan probes, about a total cost of 90mil isk. There are no information about how to cancel a self-destruct on the entire site and I didn't see ingame notice about it either.
GM XXXXX won't give me the stuff back, so I have no other choice than to cancel my subscription for a month to clearly show you what my opinion about this matter is. I have lost something due to bad customer service and customer understanding, so this will in end be your loss too.

No, you lost something due to hitting self destruct and not knowing how to cancel it.
Aka, you lost a ship due to your own failure.

For the record you simply activate self-destruct again to cancel. It tells you this when you first activate self-sestruct.

if you had lost something of value I might have a LITTLE sympathy for you, not because you were hard done by, but because you were stupid/stoned/drunk enough to blow your self up. But hell its 90mil thats chump change, if you can fly covert op's you shouldn't be bothered by a paltry 90 mil.

To be honest, if this is your view on the game, then never resub... For the simple fact that you will be dissapointed over and over again when you lose something to your own mistake and a GM doesnt give it back.

So you didn't wonder why you got this 120 second self destruct timer instead of being ejected? And you failed to abort the self destruction? And then you go to the GMs and demand reimbursment for your failures. And after being rightfully rejected you cancel your accounts? And now you even make a useless forum thread about it and cry some more?

EVE is a cold harsh world and events like that are there to build your character. You can't be soft. You need to learn to be brutal, backstabing, patient, and full of hate for your enemies, whatever they may be (even CCP)

About a year and a half ago, I left my EVE client running and went for a smoke...
My dear Sig. Other, decided that it might be fun to undock, in my Rattlesnake, fully fitted with Gis-X modules - again this is a about a year and a half ago, maybe a bit more, so we are talking about 5 Billion or so worth of stuff - then my dear, dear, Sig. Other, figured out how to open up on a Concord Commander near the station.... you can guess the rest.
By the time I came back there was nothing left, people scavenged my stuff and my 5 Billion+ ISK ship an mods were gone...
I should have opened a petition, yes I should have, should have claimed a "Hacked" account....

If you actually read the little window that pops up when you first activate the self destruct sequence, it tells you how to de-activate it.
The hardest learned lessons are usually the most expensive. Lessons like, "If you warp scram an Alliance Mate whilst shooting war targets in HiSec instead of activating your remote repper, CONCORD will take a keen interest in your activities and cease them with fierce rapidity."
I'm sorry, but your loss was in no way CCP's fault so you should not get reimbursed for it. -------------------- "I am hard pressed on my right; my centre is giving way; situation excellent; I am attacking." - Ferdinand Foch at the Battle of the Marne |

EVE is intended to be a cold, ruthless, harsh, Darwinian-selection game. It's not nearly Darwinian enough, as ilustrated by the countless "minerals are free" types of people, inventors selling below cost, people reacting at a loss and so on and so forth. If you were CARELESS enough to accidentally activate self-destruct, UNATTENTIVE enough to not read on the popup how to cancel it, UNKNOWLEGEABLE enough to know it's your fault and only your fault, then ACT SURPRISED/OFFENDED when the reimbursement is rejected... ...EVE is not for you. I won't deny that in general, he's right. I'm still waiting for the wiki they promised us more than a year ago, for instance.
But in this particular case, he DID have ample info. He DID get a warning about self-destructing. That warning ALSO told him how to cancel it. He has no excuse.

I ignored the warning message when I went into low sec the first time and got my retriever blown up. You learn more from failure than you do from success. I have always been attentive whenever I leave high-sec, you would never make the same mistake again, had you not been a quitter.
It is a game, the money means nothing, you should never leave the station in a ship you can't afford to lose or easily replace.

Svedge, it says on the warning pop up box that to cancel it you hit the button again. It gives you this nice box that says 'You Are About to BLOW UP YOUR OWN SHIP, do you want to continue?' If it wasn't there, you tried this earlier and disabled it (and should have read it then).

There was a Dev Blog recently soliciting for help with the EVE Wiki so presumably it is on its way.
As for the warning about self destruct yeah...hard to miss.
But let's assume he managed to miss it anyway being one of those people who can't be arsed to actually read.
In his position I think what would I likely do? Push a button, two minute countdown till I explode, no manual that describes self-destruct mechanics.
Maybe it is just me but the very first thing I would try is pressing that same button again. In RL when we flip a switch to turn something on we do not look elsewhere to turn it off. We flip that very same switch again. When I start my car by turning the ignition I do not pull out the manual or look in the boot to find the off switch. I just turn the ignition the other way. Works every time.
So, push button, bad timer starts. What to do to stop it? -------------------------------------------------- "Of course," said my grandfather, pulling a gun from his belt as he stepped from the Time Machine, "there's no paradox if I shoot you!"

Darwin was SOO wrong, need evidence? The OP needs to look in a mirror.
It tells you that to cancel self destruct, to hit the self destruct again. It's a toggle control. You also have, what, 2 minutes before it goes off? Why didn't you just eject again?
Yeah, not too bright on the OP's part. This is almost as good as the lady who called in tech support one afternoon (this was years ago) to yell and scream at me for poisoning her kids. Yup, I was poisoning her children, giving them a preservative at such a young age. After all, the MSG light was lit up on her phone.

Look, if the server screwed up, then its CCP's fault. YOU clicked on the wrong thing, how could your carelessness possibly be someone else's fault?

It's true, I tried to engage a flashy Megathron on a gate in my brandnew Apotheosis, only to find out that all modules are hidden. Of course, I was killed, and, due to being insanely slow reacting, podded. I petitioned it, as it was clearly a bug that no modules were shown, but they won't reimburse my ship or implants without giving a reason except "lol".
I think I'm gonna quit too.

Seriously, if it'd something to do to CCP, then yeah, sure, that might have been 'bad customer service'. But it wasn't. You did something stupid, and then wanted them to fix if for you.
Man up, and accept that your error, lost you a ship. It's not new, it happens to most people. If CCP re-imbursed me every time I undocked drunk... well, I'd have a lot more ships ;p. -- Crane needs more grid 249km locking? |

Anyways, it is your fault for clicking self-destruct, and it's your fault for not knowing how to cancel it.

This guy says he's cancelling ONE of his accounts, for ONE month, to PUNISH CCP for not reimbursing him the covert ops ship he self-destructed, which he lost because he didn't read the message that explains how you turn off the Self-Destruct (i.e.: click self-destruct again to turn it off).
He's not even leaving the game. He's just going to deprive CCP of $15 this month, to teach them a lesson about running a MMO and customer service...

Edited by: Druadan on 07/05/2008 20:53:28 The OP has good reason to feel hard done by. This isn't about him not bothering to check the information, or sucking at the game. This is another instance of CCP's UI design being severely lacking in quality. The concept of feedback has gone entirely unnoticed to CCP's UI developers and this is the kind of result we get: people lose ships and the Internet tough guys come out in force to tell him he sucks at the game.
When I first started playing, I took a Thorax into a complex. It was a fairly easy complex to take a Thorax into, but I noobed it up and got myself swamped. I realised I was taking too much damage while I was halfway into armour, so I initiated a warp back to the entrance gate of the complex. Would have been fine were it not for the error message I received, which told me that the warp could not be initiated due to "proximity to natural phenomenon" that were blocking the warp. I knew you couldn't warp straight into a room of a complex, and that you couldn't MWD inside a complex, so I started looking around me for clouds, objects... anything that could be a phenomenon blocking warp. Eventually my ship exploded as I ran around this complex trying to find my way out of range of this phenomenon.
I later found out that the error message was simply doing a paltry job of telling me that I couldn't warp from inside a deadspace complex back to the entrance gate for that complex. I petitioned the loss on the grounds of the error message not telling me what I needed to know, and got my ship back (though it was insured, so I didn't end up much better off and removing the payout nearly sent me into negative balance).
Sometimes, deficiencies in the client lead to these kinds of losses, and it's in those times that CCP need to man up and accept that their UI caused the loss. The way the client displays information messages is a seriously awful part of the client. Had their developers paid attention in software engineering degree modules, the UI might not suck so much.

You were a n00b, and didn't click self-distruct, this is why you received a replacement ship from a forgiving GM.
I however would not have replaced your ship. If you followed the in game tutorial, you have the basic principles in which to play - outside of that - it's left for you to discover and learn as you go along. That is part of the immersion process of this game, not to have everything laid out before you with their consequences detailed, but 10% explanation and the rest is left to trial and error.

Svedge, as you've probably already noticed, there is indeed an in-game pop-up explanation of how to cancel a self-destruct given upon initiating the self-destruct. The GM's can not be held responsible for an individual ignoring the pop-up warnings, nor are they obligated to reimburse anyone unless an actual bug is responsible for the problem.
That said, I applaud your willingness to cancel your subscription to prove a point. If/when you return to Eve Online, I only hope that you take more time to read and understand the pop-up warnings to avoid further mishaps of this nature. Always play the game with the assumption that you won't get anything reimbursed unless an actual bug causes the loss. ---

There's no denying that it *is* incredibly lazy design to not have the 'self destruct' menu item change to 'cancel' when you initiate it. I don't think I've ever come across that in another game or application, and I had to laugh at the sheer stupidity of it when I first saw that message.
OTOH, OP is a total sh1tbag.

We all do stupid, noob things. It's how you handle it that matters.
Once upon a time (true story), I ejected from a top named fitted Scorp to see if the rats shooting at me would stop once I was in a pod.
They had me scrambled but couldn't break my tank. It was a stalemate so I gave it a go, figuring I could come back for the ship later with a mate.
Needless to say, the ship assploded almost immediately, leaving me 150m odd out of pocket (no insurance).
I cursed and laughed and learned.

Almost ANYTHING will cancel a self destruct. Especially the way it tells you to when you initiate it. It asks you if you want to self destruct. Of course I doubt you read that because you're so cavalier until you lose something, then it's everyone elses fault. The world needs less entitlement minded babies like you.

The eject pop up is almost the same, the only difference is just the tiny text inside (I have 1680x1050 19" screen, so its smaller here than on other screens). If the self destruct pop up have had a bright red colored background, it would have made a huge difference and shouldn't be to difficult for the DEV team to implement.

It's also not difficult to read it every time either. It only takes a couple of seconds to read the first line and see the difference between the word. "eject" and "self-destruct" even if it's on some uber resolution of doom. Also make note it has been like this for practically the entire life of the game, and I highly doubt anyone else has complained so much about it. You got lazy and screwed up, live with it. . |

From ingame msg box
If you self-destruct your ship you will lose it! Are you sure you want to initiate the 2 minute self-destruct sequence?
To cancel a self-destruct sequence you should select self-destruct again (if any of your ships is already self destructing this will cancel it).

You're a poor figure. You are the only one who lost, in a sense that you obviously aren't able to learn from your mistakes which would make sense even as the kind of customer that you unfortunately are.

You have my sympathy.
Item value is poo, but that's not the matter. The real issue is that the self-destruction option is really close to another option commonly used. I been jumping in/out of station moving things last few days and expressed my concern on this matter recently: "almost self-destructed alot of times now, really poor position". And like you, I never knew how to cancel it.
Somehere here said it's just to self-destruct again, and that that information is given when you self-destruct in the first place? Well, I blew up quite a few ships and a couple of pods, and I never seen that message. That's when I deliberately blew up my stuff. I wonder how someone that accidently selfdestructed would see that.
The GM might've been a bit harsh, expecting your things back is a bit borderline, but what CCP really needs to do is to fix the bloody useless UI in this game. It's far from logical, menu browsing keep 'resetting' or accidently kicking off too early/wrong, etc. It's very sensitive, and poor positioned. All menu choices, overload buttons, everything minimum size and positioned next to things you actually do use all the time.
In that sense CCP really need to get a grip. I can't believe I say this but.. the UI was easier to use and less messy in 2005 than it is now. Some development isn't for the better.. Best game on the market, worst UI.

Well, now that I think about it... 1 month break = $15 less for CCP Which potentially means several less cups of coffee for CCP gone, which leads to cranky devs, which means EVE will failure cascade because the devs will be too busy throwing tantrums to fix anything. Anyone ever think that the Devs intentionally designed this way? Picture two of them talking:
Dev 1 "Hey do you think we should make the self destruct screen different from the eject screen?"
Dev 2 "Why would we need to spend time on that?"
Dev 1 "Well to make sure someone doesn't blow up his ship accidentally."
Dev 2 "Are you joking that would be funny! Plus we could just chalk it up to natural selection at its finest!"
Remember: "That which does not kill you, makes you giggle. And tends to change your native language to Smackinese." |

Theres no such thing as a perfect UI, of course eves could use improvement. But thats no reason to justify whining so much over laziness, I can't remember how many times that little popup, that everyone else apparently ignores, has saved my ship :P The word layout is very different, it's like mistaking a 5 dollar for a 50, sure they're the same size, same color even, but the whole layout is changed for the most part. The only thing they could do is color the box differenly for the illiterate, but that would neglect the colour blind, maybe they should make it a different shape, like a stop sign or a hazard sign. But why stop there, lets just have eve voice talk to you, incase you're blind. But then we'd be leaving out helen keller, how about we have a mobile usb launcher shoot 1 nerf missile at the user for eject, and 2 the user for self destruct. _______________________________________________ Minmatar will always go faster than you, get over it. |

There are other places in the forums where the UI is beeing constructively criticized. I think most people do not pretend that the UI is flawless, maybe you are pretending that the OP is.
This thread is not a good place to talk in a constructive manner because the OP wasn't constructive in the first place and so flaming is what's happening here.
And by pointing with the finger at others it will not get any better, how can you expect people acknowledging problems and being constructive after reading the OP's statements?

Quote:

If you self-destruct your ship you will lose it! Are you sure you want to initiate the 2 minute self-destruct sequence?
To cancel a self-destruct sequence you should select self-destruct again (if any of your ships is already self destructing this will cancel it).
That is a pop up that comes up when you select self desctruct. You then have to hit 'YES' for the self destruct to actually take place.

My sig says it all. You canceled because either you misread the core design of EVE stating that mistakes in EVE should be costly, or you feel that customer support should reimburse accidentally destroyed items even when the game revolves around accidents being part of the risk. Enjoy a game with fewer consequences to playing carelessly.

AFAIK you also get insurance for self destructing a ship. They get the same kind of compensation as a noob for doing something stupid, the own loss part is simply higher because OP choose to do the stupid thing with a T2 ship full of goodies.
The noob doesn't get his security status restored by a GM though. So why should GM's interfere with this?

Read the OP again. He isn't quitting because the UI is an unintuitive, user unfriendly piece of crap, he's quitting because the GM won't give him his stuff back! Also, the whole idea that publically quitting will suddenly make a company take notice and roll out a fix within a week is flawed to put it extremely tactfully.
The OP is not flamed because he clicked the wrong choice and didn't know how to undo it in time, causing him to lose a lot of stuff. The OP is flamed because he expected GM's to intervene in all (where the in game economy is concerned there can be no such thing as an exception. It MUST be a general rule) cases where stuff was lost due to the user not understanding the interface, because he considers a declination of his request as poor performance by the support staff, and because he uses the hopelessly antiquated tactic of stating he quit on a public forum, instead of just filling in a feedback form and quitting without wasting bandwidth.
If you make a fool of yourself with unreasonable expectations, people will make fun of you.

MAYBE in AO you managed to hit 220/40 at hecks & AI mishes, maybe you had a full OFAB set on your melee advie a PC in FoD/PW and 8 fields. Maybe... And maybe Dakkon reimbused you for items lost due lag or something. But this is not AO. Even Tara or 220 BS looks like a kindergarden for any EVE player older than 1 year.

As a matter of fairness to the OTHER players in EVE you can not be reimbursed for losing your ship through FUNCTIONAL game mechanics.
There is a notification that pops up telling you how to deactivate the self destruct.
You have stated that for some reason you couldn't read it but not because it was blurred out or incapable of being read...you just didn't read it?
You can not petition and be reimbursed for pilot error. It has to be glitch or something wrong in the coding of the game. If you had told the self-destruct sequence to STOP and yet it still went through, THEN you could have petitioned it! =D ---

Even when I lost a kitted out brutix to an insane lag out during a fleet battle I didn't bother asking for a new one. Dust yourself off and move on.
Loss is inevitable for any number of reasons.

For a month? for a MONTH? OH holy mother of destruction what havoc will your 14.95 wreak upon the budget of CCP lets see.... 0.00333e % of their total income assuming they only have 30k customers.... for one month thats still less than 0.033% of their yearly income from the game and I'm pretty sure they have more than 30k customers so I think that gm is not going to lose any sleep over your nasty gram in fact I'm pretty sure some where in the back of his subconscious he's glad another whiner left the game. Reccomendations for preventing your own stupidity in the future:
1. Learn to read the menu before clicking on something. 2. Don't turn off the warnings. 3. READ the warnings.
Oh and give me your stuff you won't be needing it.

EVE is not a game that caters or tolerates the stupid. You should find a game that does.
Tell that to highly educated pilots IRL who manages to crash a jumbo full of people due to human errors. ;)
Those pilots usually get sued, fired, or dead, either way its natural selection they don't get to whine to some GM about giving them their plane back and all of their dead passengers and their sad dead passenger families now do they? Your example is crap stop posting quit the game burn your computer and don't ever touch our internet again.

You know...in the month you've decided to protest and severly damage CCPs earning potential by a massive $14.95!!, you could have finished your milk and gone ratting to make the money back...yes sux you miss-clicked, but I think your logic in addressing the issues is somewhat misguided. I guess you might have been able to get your stuff back if you'd made a valid arguement, but seems you've just raged about it.

have you even played AoC??
btw kinda odd you would post that you have cancelled your subs *yawn* due to blowing your ship up, it was recently a big whine about the UI and I think your just talking ****, to be rather frank.
