Let me describe to you the last few moments. My most busy patrol area is but one jump from our temp center where we have trauma physicians on 24 hour call. My crew also has a trauma unit and superb on-ship facilities. I just came across a death can a few minutes a go. When scanned, there registered 38 individual lives on board. When transported, we found them all in severe trauma. Their time was close to up. The trauma team began their work and I raced back to the temp center, contacting the medical staff there. Oxygen deprivation, cold and radiation create a deadly combination and a great deal of suffering. 36 of the 38 survived. 2 perished. Those two? A pregnant woman who began to enter labor under the trauma of the death can. Both she and her nearly born infant daughter perished. They died just as we transported the group aboard. Her body was still warm when the med team got to her but it was too late for both her and her little one.
We do not know if the others will survive. The whole group was under extreme trauma. The next few days will tell.
This is why we have a wall of shame.

Word reached me just as I was approaching a death can shortly after 23:00 hours; word that another three of those rescued earlier today slipped away into death. Brains destroyed my oxygen deprivation and radiation sickness. Others are in critical condition. It made me wonder how I would find this group. We have been very lucky up to this point. We have performed countless rescued and lost few. I have been surprised not to see more of what happened today. These 50 were fine. The Death Can wasn't that old. They are disembarking now and Center Representatives are bringing them to join a few hundred others for the evening meal.
33 remain from the earlier rescue. Morning will tell the tale of their survival or their passing.

Here is my report for the rest of the day yesterday. The 33 from the other day remain in hospital. We are seeing some improvement. These 27 were all in good health. The slavers will soon be on their way to Korama, while the former slaves will soon be joining others in one of our large centers in Dresi. It still confounds me how a personal can be so bankrupt of soul so as to dump people into space knowing the kind of death that awaits them. The capsuleer is capable of such good achievement for the betterment of mankind and some have chosen that path. Others, like those on the wall of shame, have chosen to squander their gifts on cruelty and greed.

85 people would have died because of the choices of two pilots. These pilots are responsible for the worst kind of behavior; dumping people into space and leaving them to die. To choose to do such a thing is selfish and wicked. Thankfully, these lives are now safe and sound and each will have the opportunity to live out a productive life.
Below is the Wall of Shame. Today, I have added the words "personal culpability." It has been my policy to distinguish a degree of bad behavior by assigning shame to all pilots who dump people into space but not giving the names of those who "blue the can" making rescue safer and easier. The decision to dump people in space is always bad, but the decision to blue the can is a good one. Better would be never to dump them in the first place, turn around, find a station and drop them off safely.

Yesterday's patrols, though several in number, found no one in need of rescue. After a rest, I went back on patrol and immediately found 3 death cans. I am guessing they were from a convoy of merchants headed for Jita. 125 people were rescued in just a few minutes due to the practiced expertise of my crew. We are cruising back to the center where the staff there will receive these people and tend to their needs. We are careful to keep the slavers in separate areas on the ship for their own protection and to see that they are unharmed after our arrival. The temp center is reaching capacity so today or maybe tomorrow, it will be time to transport the residents to other locations.
Perhaps some among those we rescue will become instruments to bring a new era to our cluster; an era where there is no slavery and where we live in peace.

Another rescue performed this afternoon: 50 people found aboard a death can. They are not safe back at the Center. I am having them meet the center staff, have meal and get a change of clothes and them we will set off for the lager centers in Dresi along with all those recently rescued. I can transport only 990 at a time so two trips will need to be made for the total 1198 rescued since the last transfer. I will also be bringing Slaver detainees to Korama and Hounds in to our Pator Tech Voc Center in Abrat. After these transportation duties are clear, I will return to rescue patrol duty.

I seldom witness the actual jettison of a death can. Today was one of those rare exceptions when I saw it happen. In fact, I was preparing to leave the patrol area to move on to a different place when the pilot listed below jettisoned the can and immediately jumped out of the system. It doesn't always happen that way. Sometimes, the pilot will stay around a while. I don't pretend to fully understand all the motivations for this kind of conscience numbing act but I can speculate. Did she jump fast before she changed her mind? Did she jump quickly so she could put out of her mind the lives that would be gasping for breath at the end? Do those who hang around hope to catch someone rescuing the people in hopes of having a legal right to attack the rescuers? I don't really know. I do know that we are very glad when we can be at the rescue immediately, even before people realise full what has happened, before they start to despair and think about their own impending death. Such was the case today. Only moments passed before these were transported on board.
Also: A big thank you to Captain Eastwood. The Disciples of Ston are grateful.

This monring I took my morning tea with a group of rescued people including these 23 from yesterday. We talked about the insanity of slavery and how it leads to an overarching disregard of life. "Can I go with you? I want to help on your rescue ship." One of yesterday's rescued men spoke this to me. I told him that the short answer was yes but that it was one of many possibilities for him now that he isn't a slave. From ship crew to lawyer; these are all possibilities now.

Coming upon a number of jet cans in a patrol area is always unnerving. One anticipates that lives are at stake, but one also suspect a trap or an excuse for pilots to destroy and rescue attempts. To add to the fray, several pilots targeted our ship during the rescue operation. Many things have to be checked quickly to keep the people safe during a rescue. Are their corp mates watching and ready to attack? Have the pilots jumped out and back in during the rescue? In the end, three of the four jet cans were death cans and three separate pilots in separate corps were responsible. All 45 people were safely transported back to the center. I write this summary while the aggression timer ticks down, then its back to patrol.
One additional note that I have mentioned a time or two before. Pilots come in all shapes and sizes. Some have faces that look kind and others have faces that are the stuff of nightmares. However, that matters not at all. The group below sort of spans the spectrum of looks, but they are all equally full of the ugliness of treachery as far as I am concerned.

I apologize to the 45 recently rescued people that I was unable to find the name of the pilot in Concord records. On rare occasions this happens. "Hello, we are the Disciples of Ston and we are here to help you. You were ejected from your ship and left in a jet can, but you are now aboard our rescue ship and on the way to a place safety. We will not harm you. We will not return you to slavery. Medical care, food, shelter and clothing await you. Please try to be calm. No harm will come to you." My crews have said these words and similar words countless times in countless rescues. Yet, each time, we cannot help but notice that those we rescue seem to be waiting for the other shoe to fall. It isn't until they arrive, are greeted by the Elders and see others who have been rescued, does it dawn upon them that it is true. These 180 had that same look in their eyes. Some, fathers, mothers, husbands, wives and children clinging to each other, waiting their fate. It is hard to think positive and believe good, when your life has been that of a slave. It is hard to believe that you won't be separated from loved ones, when at the whim of a master, families are sold apart. That is why even our medical teams will not separate families, even in times of trauma. We have found that it is neither good for the patient nor the loved one.
We continue our work.

A little boy, maybe 5 maybe 6 years old tugged on my pant leg. "Mr. Ston sir, why to people want to us to be slaves?" How do I address what I believe to be one of the great evils of all time in terms that a 5 year old can understand and without inflaming a life long hatred in his heart?
I dropped down on one knee so as to speak to him face to face and eye to eye. "Son, I don't know the full answer to your question, but sometimes people who have chains on their hearts put chains on others." He nodded and went back to his mother.
48 people have been rescued thus far on this patrol.

Rescued people weep quite often and it is not an uncommon sight to see people crying after a rescue. This time, however, something caught both my eye and ear. This Brutor woman was crying 'differently.' She wept as though she had lost something very personal and dear to her. I caught up with her shortly after exiting pod and meeting up with the rescued people after the second rescue listed below.
The woman appeared to be in her early sixties but was perhaps a bit younger as slavery has a way of aging people. She was leaning against a pylon in the egress area of the hangar and many looked at her as you could hear the soft sounds of her crying. I placed my hand on her shoulder and could feel her shaking. I said, "Can I help you, ma'am?" After she collected herself she replied, "The pilot who left us to die reminds me of my son." I asked her where her son is. She told me that he was sold by her master when he was 18 and that she hasn't seen him since. For her to see a young man who looked so much like her son and then to have that man do what he did...it broke her.
What does one do with this but grieve?

Telling the stories of those we rescue is not something I like to do. To tell is a re-experience of the emotion of originally hearing. I have come to the conclusion, though, that it is good to tell these stories, because it validates the people we rescue. Let at least some of their experiences be known.
From the rescues listed below, one man stands out. He is a middle-aged Sebiestor, maybe 38 years old but looking more like 50. Slave holders have a classification for slaves that are particularly strong and resilient. They call them Elite Slaves and they are used for hard physical labor. This man was one such slave.
I sat with his group in the cafeteria commons last night and asked him about his story. "Do you know why you were on your way into Caldari space?" He answered, "My master sold me in a local market to a broker there. The broker sold 30 of us to a slaver who had dealings with interested parties in Gallente and Caldari space. We were being delivered when he dumped us at the border."
I asked him about his life as an Elite Slave and he told me much that I won't share here. When I brought up the issue of how he was treated by his master, he said some very unforgettable things.
"My master took 'good care' of us Elite Slaves much like a good farmer 'takes care' of his equipment. The overseers were always instructed to 'properly maintain' us. Our master literally spoke of us in the exact same way he spoke of his machinery. When injured we were sent to the infirmary for 'repair.' He kept 'maintenance logs' on us to track our breakdowns and the expense of repairs versus our productivity. Eventually, every Elite Slave reaches the end of his 'service life' and is sold. That's what happened to me."
This man's story reminds me that one need not be cruel or sadistic to dehumanize another.

"All my customers outside the Empire are, I mean 'were,' capsuleers. All the slaves I have smuggled out of Amarr space have been sold to capsuleers. And I mean capsuleers of all races. I have sold slaves to Gallente, Caldari, Minmatar you name it. what capsuleers demand, capsuleers get. They were willing to pay, I was willing to bring them across the border."
These words were spoken today by one of the slavers who found himself together with 10 Elite Slaves and another slaver sitting in a death can waiting for the final moments of suffocation. Then we came along and rescued him. This is a story we have heard spoken before by slavers jettisoned along with their illegal slave cargoes bound for non-slave space. Something else he said also struck me. "You know, capsuleers don't need slaves, they just want them. Heh heh, if there's anything that can be wanted it will be wanted by a capsuleer." This is quite an indictment on my kind even if it does come from a slaver. Those among us capsuleers who aspire to something more than greed and selfishness, have long row to hoe.
This particular slaver will find a new home at our center in Korama, at least for the foreseeable future. The former slaves are welcomed by those rescued before them.

Casualties of inconvenience; that is what these seven were and what thousands have been whom we have rescued. Since it is inconvenient to backtrack one system to find a safe place to leave their cargo of slaves, pilots just dump them into space. These seven human beings are just as valuable as the rest of us. So, how can they just be discarded as nothing? These are people; the son's and daughters of other human persons.
That someone should die simply because another wishes to avoid inconvenience...ponder that.

Most of the people we rescue never see the face nor hear the voice of the pilot who abandons them to death. Crews, that's who they see. They see baseliners working for the capsuleer who decides they weren't worth saving. When we perform a rescue, I speak to the people as soon as we are safely underway after the rescue. They see a holo-projection of me and hear my voice translated when needed. When we arrive at the center, I take the time to exit pod, visit with and eat meals with those we rescue. "I am here to serve you. Is there anything I can get you? Do you need a doctor? Are you warm enough, cool enough? Are you hungry.? Would you like some more?" Sometimes I'll serve in the kitchen. It may take quite some time for these former slaves to understand the words I am am saying to them. It may take a long while for them to realize that they are valued as human persons, not property. Perhaps the best part is when a parent allows me to hold a young son or daughter on my lap. Sometimes little children will put their finger in their mouths , slobber a bit, then reach out and touch you. That is not gross or repulsive. No, its gold. Some of the older children have even learned to "rub Ston's bald head for good luck." Sometimes capsuleers forget they are human because they have so separated themselves that they believe their own lie. I see more of the divine in the child on my lap than I ever see looking in the mirror.

By both my circadian and theirs, this rescue happened close to the time when rest is normally taken. Breakfast this morning was the first time I had to visit with these 9 former slaves. They were mine workers from Adahum IX. "That explains" I said "why the cold of the death can didn't seem to affect you like to does most." These were ice miners and used to brutally cold conditions. They had endured some of the most difficult slaves conditions in the Empire. As such, they were a valuable slave commodity and also desired outside the empire. Though they didn't know where exactly, they were bound for another ice mine outside of Empire territory. At the end of breakfast I asked, "Were your quarters a bit warm last night?" "A bit," they said, "but we're not complaining."

25 people walked off the egress ramp of the ship and on to the loading dock of the hangar bay shortly after 01:40 hours earlier today. As they did so, they walked into new possibilities. They have choices to make. Education? Work? Family? How will they carry the mantle of liberty? The first thing they will discover is that life outside of slavery is not life without obligations. However, they now will be a part of forming those obligations and tasting the responsibility that comes with them. Service is a beautiful thing when it comes from heart that chooses to do so.
Now I have mystery. The first rescue listed below is a first. We often rescue slavers along with slaves. This is the first time that I remember rescuing a group of slavers without slaves. Here we have 5 slavers and 4 hounds on their way into Caldari space and they are dumped at the border. Neither slavers nor slaver hounds are forbidden passengers in any of the sovereign areas. I'm guessing they were dumped to make cargo space for more valuable loot.

From the Early days of DSTON, we have made it the practice of confiscating weapons we may happen upon in our work. Early yesterday, I came upon a massive battle between Concord and a group of outlaws in one of the patrol areas. Many ships were destroyed. Soon other pilots swooped in to harvest the booty. I managed to salvage a weapon from one wreck, a prototype 1400mm siege cannon. Later on in the day, the rescue recorded below took place. As our crew settled these five into their quarters for the trip back, the ship manifest computer automatically registered them as slave cargo.
Most of you are familiar with recent computer upgrades that automatically give a market estimation to your visual interface when examining your ship's cargo. I was immediately struck and dismayed by the sad symbolism in what the computer displayed. For the cannon that is described as 'the ultimate artillery cannon. It hurls death and destruction over incredible distances,' it gave an estimated value of 1,880,000 ISK. But, to the five human lives rescued and given a chance to fulfill their full potential, it gave a mere pittance of value, 3790 ISK or 758 ISK per life. According to our culture's values, what hurls death and destruction is 2374 times more valuable than one of these five human lives. We ardently disagree and plan to continue to save human lives and confiscate what weapons we can.

Note to self: Never let yourself be happy about a blue can. Less distressed, yes, happy, no! When a pilot jettisons 89 people abandons the can, thinking someone will rescue them...something is deficient in that thinking. I am very glad that these 89 are alive and that we were able to rescue them, but I am sad that the pilot stopped the tugging on his heart that made him blue the can. Had he followed the path to the end, he would have tended to the lives himself.
The medical staff, the cooks, the janitors, the reception staff, everyone who works at the temp center needs to be commended. There has been practically no gap between the transfer of those at the tempt center to our permanent center and the arrival of new rescued people. Again, in just a short time we have gone from 0 to 192. Tireless, you good people, you are tireless. To regain our awareness of the living fabric woven throughout our universe is a hope I refuse to relinquish. These whom we rescue are part of that woven fabric and when their threads are so mindlessly cut, we are all weakened. We capsuleers must come to understand that our threads must not attempt to weave a separate tapestry but must be part of the larger fabric.
Some understand this and are trying, but far too many are still under the delusion of godhood. This delusion brings such wasteful death. Do those who think they are gods understand the poverty of such a deity? A god of rags, filth and incurable ugliness we would invent.
But, when we each reach out to strengthen another thread in the fabric, helping beautify and preserve another part of the whole, we bring ourselves closer to understanding the whole of what it is to be a part of this living universe.

She is Achura. Whenever the offending pilot on the wall of shame is one of my own people, I ponder again what our larger purpose might be as capsuleer pilots.
What if we as capsuleers set our purpose to serve humanity in such a way that we came to represent the very highest , most noble, unselfish, giving aspect of the cultures we represent. What if, instead of placing ourselves on top, we stood under humanity for the purpose of bearing it up upon our shoulders not crushing it under our feet?
Among those who in character rise to the top of their respective cultures, I have never heard approval for the kind of wholesale death that is represented by those who jettison people into space. Even among those whom I ardently oppose with regard to slavery, there is firm disapproval of such barbarity. This gives me some glimmer of hope that a movement of capsuleers from all cultures can grow to focus not on what we can achieve for ourselves, but what we can be to serve all humanity.
Let us begin by putting ourselves forward as servants not as kings and queens; not as the most arrogant and self-serving of our respective cultures, but the most humble and giving of our respective cultures. If we do this, I believe that we may find that small germ of agreement among us that will become the seed of brotherhood, that one day may grow into peace.
