SPECIAL GIFT
Transportation is coming along slowly. This is one of those times when I wish I was more skilled. It would make this aspect of the work more efficient. I presented a gift to the 9000 plus former slaves today. I found it while on rescue ops and thought it uniquely appropriate as a symbol of past captivity, present freedom, and future possibility. It is an Amarr token of submission. These were often given to capsuleers who demonstrated loyalty to the empire in all things. Slaves, of course were not given such tokens. Their submission was not voluntary but coerced.
This token now becomes a part of Matriculation Center history and takes its place in a way it was never intended by its original issuer. As to the recipient, it was abandoned in space and would have vanished as a vapor if I had not picked it up. Perhaps the pilot rethought the idea of submission and decided that self-autonomy isn't so bad after all.
Self-autonomy, self-determination, liberty, etc. are all "messy" values. The are, because we are flawed and sometimes use our freedoms for ill rather than for good. But these are Arch-values of humanity and worth preserving and promoting in spite of the mess they sometimes create. That is why the Disciples of Ston oppose slavery and Sansha Nation. We cannot approach peace through either the repression of freedom or through engineering its elimination. We have to arrive at peace through the messiness of liberty.

Two rescues were conducted today about 8 hours apart. The first rescue involved a relatively large group of people, 202 and the second a smaller group of 29 people. Both groups were safely and quickly shuttled to Center #3. We have also transported roughly equal numbers to three different locations where our four centers are located. SOme may think that this would present an administrative nightmare, but those rescued are hard working people. For the first time for most of them, they are working hard as free people and for each other, not a master/owner. What a difference this makes. No one is taking care of them; they are taking care of themselves with resource assistance from us. There is no entitlement, just hard work and good hope for the future.

I will attempt to re-send this message.....communications have been hit or miss lately and I have no idea why, I will attempt to fix the links to public profiles later. The past 24 hours have seen a pair of rescues, totaling 325 former slaves and 122 other passsengers. I am appaled at the blatant disregard of the pilots who jettisoned these poor souls into space.
Pilot: Sar'Tek], 308 lives Race: Caldari Corp: Lai Dai Infinity Systems
Pilot: Cern Nuos, 139 lives Race: Caldari Corp: Minertour North Industries Inc.
Update: The majority of the former slaves have opted to attend our newest matriculation center. A small handfull of them have indicated that they wish to return to their 'master'. The mixed passengers turned out to include several slavers and their personal entourage of exotic dancers. The dancers have been given their freedom and the slavers have been detained for further questioning. |

Have you contacted the Holders of those who wish to return to arrange transport and transfer? We have done this once before with a slave named Tobias who was committed to the Goldcore Holder Family. If you need help with this let Ston or me know.
We have a detention center at our corporate HQ in Korama where we bring slavers for detention. Slaver hounds are brought to the Vocational Training Center in Korama, Homeless to the homeless shelter also in Korama.
We have also transferred former residents to the Freedom program sponsored by the Electus Matari. We can arrange covert transport out of Empire space in those circumstances.
Good work on the rescues, Ta Pang. |

On Rescue patrol today, I came across two jet cans. One of them belonged to someone I have seen before who, in my experience, has never jettisoned a living being. In fact, She always seems to eject one unit of metal scraps. So, I went on to the second can as quickly as possible. The crew was alerted to prepare the reception area and to ready quarters. Emergency medical personal prepared their equipment and were standing by. The can contained 44 people. They were transported aboard. It is interesting to note the levels of relief that former slaves experience. The first level comes when they realize they aren't going to die in that jet can. The second level of relief is when they realize that we are not going to re-enslave them.
At the Matriculation center, relief turns to a sense of marvel in the scope of what the future may hold for them. I am impressed at how quickly these liberated ones request to become involved in the work of the centers, in helping others, and even in joining rescue efforts themselves.

I have a question... Why use the term matriculation? That makes it seem that they are being registered on some sort of secret list to keep tabs on former slaves, indeed the very defintion of Matriculation is :
Quote:Matriculation, in the broadest sense, means to be registered or added to a list, from the Latin matricula GÇô little list. In Scottish heraldry, for instance, a matriculation is a registration of armorial bearings. The most common meaning, however, refers to the formal process of entering a university, or of becoming eligible to enter by acquiring the meeting prerequisites.
Which begs the question, what are the prerequisites? Forgive me if this question has already been answered, as you know, we goons have notoriously short attention spans.

Matriculate: To be admitted into a group.
You forget that most of the words we use are "idioms" and are connected to life in its various manifestations. Matriculation is perfect because it is an idiom that describes moving from one segment of society to another and the process of preparation and acceptance that is involved. The idiom is most often used in higher education and refers to new students being brought into the culture and society of the student body. You definition above makes a reference to that as "the most common meaning." "Secret list" is in no way a part of what matriculate means. Enroll, yes. To keep track of in the negative sense that you mean, no. Acceptance into free society, yes. Armorial, absolutely! The Matriculants receive a sense of new pride and bear the coat of arms, so to speak of freedom. |

While on a supply run, I encountered a container by the Niarja gate. I stopped to check it out and found another 29 slaves abandoned to the cold of space. I quickly aligned, boarded all the people and started to warp away. At that time, my ship suffered a catastrophic systems failure in the Warp Drive and it Emergency Warped in an unplanned direction. The poor rescued people thought they were about to die and I and my crew were not very happy either. When we regained control, I personally went to visit and assure the newly freed people that everything was ok, and that we were taking them to a station to be checked out and join some others awaiting transport from Amarr Space.
To Date, another 161 people have been rescued. This last 29 were abandoned by an Amarrian Captain heading to Caldari Space. Unfortunately, during the Emergency Warp, all of the information was lost. All I do remember is that She was Khanid and a pilot of several years experience. That makes Her actions all the worse. She should have more compassion than to abandon someone to their fate that way. |

How convenient. Amongst all of the technology we have at our disposal on our vessels there must be backups of collected data. Or is it that you do not wish for the identity of this pilot to really be known? Is she a friend? Family member? Lover? Or did she simply pay you a bribe to ensure that the data was erased?

I just picked up the first cargo of fresh water from our new water depot.
250 units of water equaling about 95000 liters should be about a week's supply of drinking water plus hygienic uses. The Elders will adjust the order on a week to week basis. Thank you Manwe and Edaine for taking care of this logistic issue for the Matriculation Centers.

The failure was a catastrophic systems failure that happened just as the ship was about to go into warp. All the electronics crashed and had to be cold booted to restart and regain control of the ship. The information on the pilot was on the screen at the time and had not as yet been saved.
Do you think that a pilot that abandoned 29 people to die in space would be concerned about their name getting out? It was a public act at a gate. I am sure it was witnessed by several pilots when she did it. Shame on them for not checking the container and saving the people themselves.
All these rescues must be really hitting a nerve. I did not know that I was personally hurting your income or that I may have given your favorite Exotic Dancer a place to escape to. |

There are times when the smart thing to do is to say nothing or leave a note worthy item unreported. Is the smart thing always the right thing? We don't think so. Sometimes we feel compelled to report something that will give the enemies of freedom verbal ammunition or cause to criticize our work. This is one such occasion.
While the Disciples of Ston are non-violent and while we try to avoid the glorification of violence, we realize that history is full of violence and violent symbols are a part of every people's history and even identity. This is also true of the communities of people we are rescuing. Recently, the Elders requested that a relic be smuggled into Amarr space and delivered to one of our matriculation centers to be included among other items of important historical and cultural significance. This item is the Khumaak. For a shorter explanation, one may also read this description of the Khumaak.
I will not go into the story here as the reader can accomplish that research on his or her own. However, I wanted to mention that the Khumaak is illegal to transport through Amarr space. We are used to smuggling people out of Amarr space, but not smuggling items into Amarr space. The Khumaak is illegal in Amarr because it symbolized the violent struggle of the Matari to free themseves from the hands of their slave holding oppressors. The Kumaak cuts both ways, for it was that uprising that led to the near extermination of the Starkmanir tribe. Apparently, though, Amarr fear it more. The Khumaak used to be a sepor of sorts used to symbolize the power and prestige of the most influential of Amarrian holders. Now it has come to represent the uprising against those holders, not just for the Stakmanir but for all the tribes.
We have brought a Khumaak to Center #3 in response to the request of the Elders. I want to thank Ston, who actually was the one who found the Khumaak. He informed me of it, I informed the Elders and then transported it into Amarr space aboard the Elutheria. It is now prominently displayed along side the Amarrian token of submission. Truly the rescued people are shaping their own community. |

A Brutor slave trader transporting slaves to sell and then dumping them to die at the border. These are the saddest of all the observations we make in our work. While delighted to rescue 20 lives from death, it pains us to find our theat they were betrayed to death by a sister of the same tribe.

Unfortunately this seems to the be corporation ruled by one Ran'Shad, who seems to such a vocal opponent of ours.
Unfortunately the have arrived on station equipped with Battlecruisers or Industrial vessels equipped with microwarpdrives to increase their speed. They have been able to scoop at least 4 different cans out from under me. They also do not seem to give second thought to locking weapons or using intimidation to acheive their goal. |

Why does Elongur "serve" Mr. Shad? What is the "truth" she has realized? Read it from her own bio:
Name: Ami-Lee Elongur DOB: 14/05/089 (Age 24)
Public History:
A slave of the Amarr her entire life, Ami-Lees family has served varius Amraian masters for as far back as they can recall. She is currently the property of High Lord Ran'Shad of the Imperial Manufacturing and Engineering Regiment. As a reward for her families ongoing service, and loyalty during the mass break-out a generation ago, Ami-Lee was granted immortality as a capsuleer.
High Lord Ran'Shad has made it well known that should she ever betray her master, the remainder of Ami-Lees family would be slowly tortured and executed...
The truth that if she betrays her "master" her family will be tortured and killed. What a "wonderful" spokesman you are for your religion, Mr. Shad. Are all the Amarr like you? |

Besides the Freedom Program offered by the Electus Matari, the Disciples of Ston are looking for other opportunities by anti-slavery groups for training, both academic and vocational. We are also looking for legitimate employment opportunities in null and sub-null space where transport of former slaves does not have the legal ramifications of confiscation. Some of our Matriculants are willing to enter risky and dangerous occupations while others are not. We are trying to expand our options in advance of our ability to provide covert transport on a larger scale. Please respond here as all our members check this from time to time.

That considered, the slave traders are still very relieved to be rescued. It has become known that we neither execute slavers nor hand them over to those who do. Incarceration seems to be preferred to either death can or execution.

Dear Ms. Goldcore, First, it is good to see that you are well. I am sure Ston will talk to you when he has the opportunity. We are holding 40 slavers presently, but they are not all Amarrian. In fact, some are of unknown nationality. These individuals do not seem to identify themselves by citizenship. Most have not been cooperative with giving us information. very well. You understand my concern is that Amarrian citizens (which could be of any race) may be detained for breaking no Amarrian law. Although they very may easily have done so with illegal slave raids or other violations (but obviously slaving is not illegal by any means in the Empire).
I know that often persons whom attend to slaves may be simply designated as 'slaver' as well. Some persons you have there may have been simply in charge of the care taking of their charges when the capsuleer decided to jet them out to space. In which case the only 'crime' the 'slaver' would have committed is doing his lawful (by any nation's law) job.
But thank you for cooperating and I will likely wish to investigate this mater further.
I pray you peace. Thgil Goldcore Imperator Commander of the Amarr navy
